Jabroniville Mutants & Masterminds - Marvel- The Letter "O"

Marvel: The Letter "O":

"O" has been used for, well, "O-Sounds" since Ancient Greece (the original sound was "eyn" in
Phoenician, and was meant to represent the human eye). It is now the fourth-most-common letter
in the English alphabet, and has numerous pronounciations- it's also a good signifier of where
someone grew up- with certain accents, the long and short "o" sounds are different, and different
words will rhyme with each other. The fact that the mouth makes a round shape while making this
sound means that even non-European languages have used this letter to signify the sound.

Despite its common-ness in the English language, and a lot of interesting words starting with it
(check all the guys with "Omega" in their name), not a lot of super-characters start with this letter.
The most important by far is Odin, the Allfather of the Norse Pantheon (naturally, he pre-dates
comics by a ways). There's also Onslaught (more of a one-off, but he was pretty important for a
while), Omega Red and... well, that's basically it for important people. After that, it's just Oya (who
usually has her name dropped and is simply known by her real name), The Owl, The Overmind and
Orka. Notably, I've already statted up all of the "O" people, so these are all merely re-posts.

his way to twist others into doing his bidding.
Responsibility (Ego)- Stane cannot handle not being the best- should someone prove
themselves his superior, he will be despondent and maybe even suicidal.
Power Loss (Armor)- Power Armor requires skill and practice to use properly- Stane has
neither at first, and must rely on a computer (set in another building) to correct his fighting
abilities. If the computer is damaged, his Ranged Attack will drop to his basic Dexterity, and
he will drop in Fighting by 2.

Total: Abilities: 54 / Skills: 32--16 / Advantages: 8 / Powers: 98 / Defenses: 12 (188)

Obadiah Stane- The Most Memorable Mirror Image Villain:

-One of the funny things about the Marvel Movies is that they have this ability, much like the
DC Animated Universe writers, to condense these comic book characters into either some
kind of iconic form that avoids all of the useless extra bits, or basically reinvent old forgotten
characters and turn them into something awesome. Such is the case with Obadiah Stane, who
was Yet Another Evil Capitalist adversary of Tony Stark's, in addition to being Yet Another
Powersuit-Using Villain of Iron Man's. Basically a master manipulator from day one, Stane
(the son of a gambling addict who died playing Russian Roulette) built up his own company
and used it to take over Stark International. Stane's backstory included using psychological
manipulation for his own ends (once killing another boy's dog to distract him and cause him
to lose a chess match between the two), and he uses this during their war, setting up one of
his "Chessmen" agents as Tony's lover in order to break him down.

-Tony, beside himself with stress, fell off the wagon and became a drunk once more- his
company was ruined, taken over by Stane International. Stane then stole the Iron Man designs
and had the Iron Monger suit built. Tony becomes a homeless alcoholic, leading James
Rhodes to pilot the Iron Man Armor and refuse to give it up to Stane, becoming a solo
operative for years. Tony, sobering up after promising to care for a dying homeless woman's
newborn son, rejoins the fight, allying with Rhodes and building a new company. Stane
switches the minds of his ally Madame Masque with Bethany Cabe (Stark's on-and-off
girlfriend), kidnaps Tony's friends (including long-gone characters like Happy Hogan &
Pepper Potts) and more to try and manipulate him further, but Tony builds the Silver
Centurion Armor (ah, this makes it the '80s, then) that is SO superior to his old stuff (despite
Iron Man pretty much always existing on the exact same tier of Marvel's super-heroes in
terms of power, he has upgraded his suits in power VERY often. Figure THAT one out), and
beats up Stane in his new Armor, helped by its energy-absorbing capabilities neutralizing the
Iron Monger's thermal blasts. Stark realizes that Stane, who is inexperienced with his armor,
would have to be using a computer to help him control it, and destroys the building
containing that computer, seizing up Stane's armor.

-Having been beaten on every level by Tony, Stane, unwilling to be arrested and humiliated,
admits defeat and commits suicide by vaporizing his own skull with the Iron Monger's
thermal blast, ending that big character arc. The suit would reappear a couple more times,
with lesser villains going all "Crimson Dynamo" and over-using the concept. His company
would be bought out by Justin Hammer, who would be forced to sell to Tony, recreating
"Stark Enterprises". When the Iron Man movie came out starring Obadiah as the villain (as a
mentor of young Tony's who was actually evil) and Marvel was eager to capitalize on its
incredible success, they soon introduced Ezekiel "Zeke" Stane, Obadiah's son, who became a
regenerating Cyborg.

Movie Obadiah:
-So Stane appeared to not be a BAD villain, but was yet another Mirror Image Villain for
Tony, who always fought evil industrialists and evil Powersuit guys (not often both at ONCE,
but still). But the MOVIE hit one out of the park with the towering, charismatic portrayal of
Jeff Bridges as Tony's mentor & father-figure (after the deaths of his parents), who was
nonetheless an evil bastard out to control Stark Enterprises. And MAN was Bridges great in
that role- he often plays "Dude"-esque funny guys, so seeing him as a pretty threatening
villain was great. He was utterly calm and collected most of the time, darkly threatening in
others, and furiously loud the next ("Tony Stark BUILT THIS... IN A CAVE!! OUT OF
SCRAPS!!!"). And then he put on a power-suit ("How is he able to use that so well? I
thought Tony took hours to figure it out."- leave it to my mom to poke holes in the plot) and
fights Tony himself, dying because Marvel Movies LOVE killing off their villains for
whatever reason. Something that's come to bite them on the ass as a lot of the newbies have
been quite forgettable.

Stane's Genius & Suit:

-Comic book Stane is smart, charismatic and manipulative, and gains extra power with with
Powersuit, which is better than the old-school Red & Gold Iron Man Armor, but is noticeably
weaker than the Silver Centurion Armor (which is itself definitely weaker than many of the
current suits). His inability to use the suit properly is a major plot point, which is funny
because comics (and M&M for that matter) rarely puts "experience when using weapons" as
a major factor in anything. In fact, pretty much ANYONE should have extreme trouble using
a Powersuit the first few times, though that actually makes the fact that Powersuits get a giant
discount for something that rarely happens (ie. being left without the gear- a rare occurence in
the stories) even MORE egregious- a big part of the discount for Removable stuff is that the
enemy can use it AGAINST YOU if it's taken away, in my opinion. So... feel free to include
it as a Complication sometimes. In the meantime, Powersuit Guys will always get a huge
discount on their gear, forcing GMs to completely de-power them to "justify" the points they
get for it.

OBLIVION
Created By: J.M. DeMatteis & Alan Kupperberg
First Appearance: Iceman #1 (Dec. 1984)

-Another Abstract Being, he apparently makes up one of the four that make up all things-
Eternity, Infinity & Death are the other three (personally, I think Infinity & Oblivion are
COMPLETELY unnecessary, and just muddy the entire concept). He represents entropy and
the void- one of his "aspects" is Amatsu-Mikaboshi. His agents have included Deathurge and
Doorman (of the Great Lakes Avengers).

Complications:
Obsession (Destruction)- Offended by the existence of other life in the universe, The
Obliterator is devoted to wiping it all out. He killed his entire world when he discovered his
immortality. His obsession runs so deep that he will become despondent if his weapons are
destroyed, as if they are a part of his being.

Total: Abilities: 86 / Skills: 50--25 / Advantages: 23 / Powers: 81 / Defenses: 15 (232)

-The Obliterator is what would happen if The Champion dropped all that pesky
characterization and just became a one-note fighter... well, MORE of a one-note fighter. The
Obliterator is one of those "I killed my entire race out of boredom" guys (yes, comics has
more than one), having killed twenty BILLION people out of his desire to hunt and kill
others. He also has a ridiculously-cartoonish appearance, barely even fitting in with the other
characters in the Silver Surfer arc that introduced him- everyone else appears normal, while
he has dot eyes and a giant round jawline like a comic strip character would. He fought The
Silver Surfer, doing very well and seemingly killing Mantis! However, this proved to
ENRAGE the Surfer, who did one of those "this is how powerful I REALLY am" things,
kicking The Obliterator's ass and disintegrating his guns and sky-sled. He was trapped on the
seemingly lifeless world so that he could never harm anyone else, despondent even after
finding some sentients there.

-Several issues later, The Obliterator was found by some of his fellow Elders- he lamented
that he was useless without his weapons. Incredulous, his allies pointed out he can simply
MAKE MORE, which apparently hadn't occurred to him. He flew to Zenn-La, planning on
exterminating the entire planet to hurt the Surfer- the two fought once more, proving to be
evenly-matched. The Obliterator planned a super mega-blast, aimed at Zenn-La's core,
promising to blow up the entire world, but the Surfer beat him with a feat of logic- such an
act would kill everyone but the Surfer, making HIM an Elder of the Universe! Unable to deal
with the man he hates being a "brother" Elder, The Obliterator gave up.

-The character doesn't appear for another six years, popping up in Quasar, suggesting that he
be allowed to kill the newborn creature Origin. When this is disallowed, he and The
Possessor attack Quasar & Thunderstrike for some reason, setting off a huge fight.
Thunderstrike tricks Obliterator into blasting his partner, then Quasar uses Possessor's
runestaff to stab The Obliterator, wrecking his armor and leaving him floating unconscious in
space. This is his final appearance for over twenty years- the character ultimately barely HAS
a character, but as a completely genocidal madman with power immense enough to fight the
Silver Surfer, I'm a little shocked he's allowed to just fart around killing stuff. His ridiculous
appearance, combining a cartoony face with hideous boxy armor, pretty much ensures most
won't use him, though.

-The Obliterator is strong and tough as hell, but his gun-backpack thingie (Removable and
not Easily Removable) is still his best weapon. And he's single-minded even by Elder
standards, and no tactician at all.

Complications:
Motivation (Power)
Enemy (The Wildblood, The Fantastic Four)

Total: Abilities: 78 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 13 / Powers: 38 / Defenses: 11 (149)

-Occulus is a CLASSIC 1990s villain- just this aimless collection of "Villainous Costume
Tropes" (Cybernetic eye! Flowing cape! Evil facial hair!) that makes him look as haphazard
and thoughtless as Devos the Devastator, who... oh hey, look at that. Tom DeFalco & Paul
Ryan created this guy, too! Occulus is so obscure that the most notable thing he's ever done is
appear on a Marvel Cards Series IV card, appearing in their big Fantastic Four nine-card
"page", where me and hundreds of other comics fans looked at him and went "Occulus!?
Who the f*ck is Occulus?!".

-Occulus is an alien from the "Inniverse", who was found to have an inborn power to utilize
the weird "power gems" that float about the Inniverse's skies. He is recruited by their Gem
Guild and eventually gained tons of power from them, and while chasing after someone
called The Wildblood, he ended up on Marvel Earth where he got involved with the Fantastic
Four after bringing Sue & Franklin Richards back with him. Occulus beat the entire FF
handily a few times, and attempted to use Franklin's powers to do stuff with the gems and
gained ultimate power, but Reed was able to rig up a device that produced an opposite charge
to him.

-He was more of a one-shot DeFalco villain, but reappeared later as one of Aron the Rogue
Watcher's minions, then showed up to fight the Torch & Spider-Man as "Doc Occulus"
(having stolen Doctor Octopus's adamantium arms in a weird "deep cut"), and once got
casually captured by the FF and taken to the Negative Zone Prison. So not much of a run for
this guy, despite earning himself a "Current Character" Marvel Card in a set FULL of them
(where else can you find Hardcore, Terror Inc., Shock & Deadzone listed among Spider-Man,
Wolverine, Iron Man & Thor?).

-Occulus is powerful enough to beat the ENTIRE Fantastic Four (in the '90s, this was
basically a squad of PL 10/11s) in his first appearance, and given the nature of New Villain
Stink, this sets him up at about PL 11-12 now (PL 11 until he makes a comeback where he
can beat the entire team again ). He's still fairly cheap thanks to his Limitation (disarming
all his Gems effectively leaves him powerless), but at one point, he even received a boost
from Franklin Richards' powers, turning him into an effective Flying Brick in addition to
boosting his Blasts (likely making him PL 13-14 as well).

-I swear to God, this is a real character, created by Mark Gruenwald, the Patron Saint of
Jobbers. Oddball is a member of the "Death-Throws" a team of juggling super-villains.
Again, not making that up. They were Hawkeye's own recurring foes, which is probably why
his comic books keep getting cancelled, and why he got casually killed off that one time.
These guys suck on the level of most Morts, and I'm actually surprised they're not more
famous, since they're SO over-the-top silly- they've got "Stilt-Man Recognizability" all over
them. Oddball actually has the "best" costume out of the lot of them, and by far the coolest
power-set- he's sorta the Hawkeye/Boomerang of Juggling Balls- having one of each type,
juggling them to and fro while he fights people.

-Of course, this made him the biggest TARGET of the Death-Throws, and so he was casually
murdered by Headhunter in that Wolverine arc that killed Forearm, when everyone was in a
tournament in Madripoor, and it was mostly lameoids with Logan & Mr. X fighting. There's
currently a NEW Oddball, Orville Bock, as apparently someone thought this gimmick was so
awesome that it just HAD to be filled as soon as possible.

-Oddball's a true Mort, a PL 8 joke villain who can actually be pretty dangerous at points
(Exploding, Acid, Snare, and a half-dozen kinds of Dazzles & Concealment Attacks), like
most Gimmick-Guys and their multiple Alt-Effects of one kind of thing. I gave him a
"Juggling" skill to showcase his ability to do stuff while still 'holding' several different items
at once (this doesn't really have much of an in-game effect short of possibly being used to
impress people- it's basically an Easily Removable Device that can be handily-lost
otherwise).

-So with the original Oddball dead, I guess the next writer just REALLY wanted to use one,
and so an identical replacement was created. He showed up in, of all places, a Union Jack
book, as Jack and Sabra teamed up to take out the Death-Throws, who'd been hired by
Crossfire to blow up Tower Bridge. Because when you want a job done right, you call THE
DEATH-THROWS. To date, the character has made two appearances in more than ten years-
once in Union Jack, and once in Loki: Agent of Asgard.

-I made Oddball II identical to the first one. Hey, it's not like Marvel put any effort into him,
either.

Motivation (Protection of Asgard)
Motivation (Spying on Thor's Love Life)- Odin doesn't like it when Thor dallies with the
mortals, if you know what I mean. He'd prefer it if his son would stick with Sif in the long-
term.
Enemy (Surtur, Loki, Ymir, Karnilla, Malekith)- To the enemies of Asgard, Odin is the chief
guy to take out.
Weakness (The Odinsleep)- Odin is prone to long, LONG naps in order to restore his power.
His aging has taken it's toll on him.

Total: Abilities: 134 / Skills: 68--34 / Advantages: 45 / Powers: 219 / Defenses: 17 (449)

Odin in Mythology: was the ultra-powerful King of the Gods, and the main character of the
whole thing. Norsemen venerated him widely, viewing him as this clever old man with one
eye (he'd given up the other for eternal wisdom), and the greatest general and warrior of all
time. Nonetheless, he was fated to die in Ragnarok; swallowed by the Fenris Wolf. He had
two brothers, Vili and Ve, but they disappeared. He is called Woden, Wotan and over 170
other names, and gives his name to "Woden's Day", and his "wanderer" guise (an old
bearded man with a cloak and a pointed hat) gave rise to J.R.R. Tolkien's depiction of
Gandalf the Grey.
Odin- King of the Gods:
-Odin is kind of a weird figure in the Thor books- despite being a mostly-benevolent King to
his people, and a defender against MUCH worse threats, Odin is quite the prick. He slept
around on Frigga to produce Thor with Gaea the Earth Mother (Frigga apparently... doesn't
mind, I guess), frequently punishes Thor for "pride" and imagined slights, tries to break him
up with mortal women, and usually doesn't even bother to help his son. No wonder Loki
eventually betrayed him. He's still a bit better than Captain Crazypants Zeus, but not by
much. I mean, he hates it when Thor spends too much time on Midgard, but HE BANGED
THE GODDESS OF THE EARTH SO THOR WOULD BE EXTRA-POWERFUL.

-That said... Odin was pretty cool in Walt Simonson's Thor run. I really liked the part where
he helped some children abandon Asgard (before the coming of Surtur)- the children were
overheard plotting to be rebellious and stay behind & fight the Demon-God. Wise Odin then
came up to them, suggesting that oh SURE, he'd LOVE to have them backing him up... but
he needed them for an important mission. See, he feared for the safety of his wife, Frigga.
But as Odin needed to defend Asgard himself, he feared his wife would refuse to abandon
him. So he NEEDED the kids to leave Asgard, so that poor naiive Frigga would feel the need
to protect them, when really Odin needed THEM to protect HER. The kids were like "WOW
a great mission! And he loves his wife, and we need to protect her!" and gladly ran off,
leaving Asgard. And then Odin got the bad-ass moment of standing down Surtur with his two
sons at his side.

Odin the Dick:

-There are assorted common storylines in Thor books involving Odin- he punishes Thor like
a douchebag, calling him back or rewarding him only when he saves the day (productive but
manipulative). He dies (it's happened three times so far- fighting Mangog, fighting the
Celestials while inside the Destroyer armor, and while fighting Surtur), and at one point was
supposed to end the cycle of Ragnarok- which was at least two Ragnaroks ago. Like I said
before, comics does this A LOT). He fights some uber-menace all by himself once all else
fails. That sort of thing. However, Odin reappears in modern times, and REALLY ramps up
the dickishness during Fear Itself- plotting to destroy all of Earth in order to stop The
Serpent: The God of Fear (note: not from Norse Mythology)- he has to be convinced to allow
the heroes of Earth to make some great weapons to save the day. Later, he tries to depose the
new female Thor, but is stopped by "Odinson" and Freyja's army of super-heroines.

-Also, I find it really goofy how they keep naming all his stuff the "Odin_____". He can't just
hibernate- he's gotta go down for the "Odinsleep". He can't use Cosmic Force- it's gotta be the
"Odinforce". Like, seriously. Does he use the Odinspear? Does he brush the Odinbeard. Has
Frigga ever walked in on him while he was having the Odinfap?

Odin's Might:
-Odin is equal in power to Zeus of the Olympians, despite having more physical drawbacks-
he requires the Odinsleep, can noticeably become tired, and like all Asgardians, he ISN'T
actually Immortal- just love-lived. His "Odinpower" can manifest itself in some CRAZY
ways, including one-shot events like stopping time, teleporting the ENTIRE HUMAN RACE
somewhere else (effectively a massive Area Affects Others Teleport to an astonishing
degree), turning an entire race into one being, controlling the lifeforce of all of Asgard to
place them into The Destroyer, and more. To these ends, I gave him the highest Variable
Power of any God, Skyfather or otherwise. His power is such that he can hold his own
against Dormammu for a length of time, probably take on Mephisto, and even take on
Galactus mano-a-mano for a while. He once knocked around The Silver Surfer and Thanos
simultaneously, which is NOT easy. He's also taken out Annihilus, one-hit-killed Hela, and
more.

-Heck, PL 17 almost seems like it's not covering it, even though it makes sense given most of
Odin's accomplishments. A fight between him and Seth apparently once shook the
foundations of the Multiverse and shattered "Countless galaxies", which I chalk up to a writer
being up his own butt with Power-Geeking at it's highest levels, going
"ohhhhhHHHHHHHHHHH SO POWERFUL!!!", because really, how could Odin EVER be
in danger if he was really that powerful? I prefer to think of him using lots of Variable
(technically he doesn't need a lot of Alt-Effects with that much of it, but they cover a wider
breadth than Variable typically allows, and it's not like I was aiming to scrimp on points
here), and tons of Ritualist, along with the occasional temporary boosts in power. Zeus may
be among the most powerful beings in the world, but my money would be on the more
versatile, and nastier Odin.

-I'd never heard of this guy before doing T-Bolts builds ages ago, but he was a little-known
Roy Thomas creation for The X-Men, way back when they were the low-selling bastard child
of the Marvel Comics line (hee, funny times those must have been). A non-mutant with great
genius, he did some stuff working for Factor Three (Unus, Vanisher, Blob, Mastermind &
"Mutant Master") and then vanished, taking his goofy purple suit with him. He was brought
back for Thunderbolts as a reclusive genius weirdo who helped out around their base without
their knowledge, sort of like that Japanese guy who discovered a grown woman secretly
living in his house while he was at work. At first mortified to be noticed, and worried about
what the T-Bolts would do to him, he was instead delighted to find the team appreciative of
his talents. He decided to continue hanging out with them... but was immediately captured
and replaced by Techno, who'd left the squad. When Techno was killed by the Scourge of the
Underworld, he was freed. However, he didn't last long- when the powerful Humus Sapien
attacked, Ogre sent both of them into exile on a distant planet.

-The Ogre had a TON of equipment that I was going to use with Equipment, but I ultimately
realized that all his varied stuff over the years was better represented with Gadgets, like a true
gadgeteer/inventive genius would use. He's physically unimpressive (his stats show that he's
5'1" and 151 lbs.- basically a super-short fat-ass. Much like Trolls, Ogres have variable
imagery in mythology, which is why a more Dwarf-ish guy would get called "The Ogre", I
guess. Ogre's a genius hitting +14-15 on his good Skill checks. Not much good in a fight, but
he's versatile and a Skillmonkey, which the team was then short on.

Enemy (Wolverine, Kitty Pryde)- Both have been his targets in the past.

Total: Abilities: 92 / Skills: 58--29 / Advantages: 12 / Powers: 54 / Defenses: 13 (200)

-Ogun was created for the Kitty Pryde & Wolverine Limited Series that was meant to give
some backstory and development to the still-new-ish characters Claremont was using in his
X-Men run. A Mutant Martial Arts Master, Ogun was Wolverine's mentor in the ninja arts,
but eventually joined the Yakuza, and brainwashed Kitty Pryde into being his personal
assassin against Logan. Kitty eventually resisted (but maintained Ogun's martial arts skills in
a bit that was more intended to "level her up" without having to go through all that "long-
term training" stuff that the New Mutants had to do), and Logan slew his former sensei.

-Ogun's disembodied spirit returned years later, but shattering his mask destroyed it. Another
return saw Logan stab one possessed victim (Viper), and a panicked Ogun "jumped" from her
body into nothingness, having no one else to possess. He has returned a few MORE times,
usually to threaten Kitty's life instead- generally, he's like a low-rent Shadow King, doing
largely the same sort of stuff (Possess people, attack his enemies). Kitty once convinced him
of the error of his ways, and he faded away on the Astral Plane, but he returned to vex her
again. However, he's responsible for the death of Cyber, so there's that.

-Ogun is a high-skill Martial Artist with a ninja bent, and appears to have some superhuman
physical qualities (he easily tanks a sword shot through the torso). However, after his first
appearance, he's an Insubstantial Spirit, and so has different types of stats (generally
Concealment/No Strength/No Stamina type of stuff). He might also be immortal (one legend
claims that he once had a contest of wills against Miyamoto Musashi).

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Dinosaurs cannot speak to humans, nor use their limbs to easily
manipulate objects.
Weakness (Cold Climates)- The Age of Reptiles was a much hotter time period than our own.
Creatures from that era will be more susceptible to Cold and Ice-based attacks.
Responsibility (Genetic Coding)- Old Lace has been genetically-engineered for certain traits.
Notably, she must follow Gertrude's orders, and cannot attack anyone in Gert's immediate
family, such as her evil parents. She will also feel any pain inflicted upon her Tele-Emapthic
Bonded friend. She also follows Chase's orders, but is able to resist and argue.

Total: Abilities: 48 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 10 / Defenses: 11 (91)

-Old Lace was introduced in the second Runaways issue- a "Velociraptor" with a genetically-
engineered link to Gertrude Yorkes (who was then going by Arsenic- thus making the team
Arsenic and Old Lace, named after an old classic movie and play). The whole "Raptor
Buddy" thing is part of the whole "Appealing to Kids" bit, naturally. It would take an odd
amount of time for the know-it-all Gert to be corrected that Old Lace is in actuality a
DEINONYCHUS, given its large size. Old Lace was a classic Animal Buddy, doing Animal
Buddy things like comically-attacking any villains who got close- her tele-empathic link to
Gert is eventually transfered to Gert's boyfriend Chase Stein upon Gert's demise. Chase
begins using her in a more lethal context, but she is enabled some free will. In the end, she is
killed saving the life of Klara Prast. Old Lace reappears years later in Avengers Academy,
having been revealed to have been transported to an alternate dimension for some reason.
When Gert is restored in the new series, Old Lace returns to her old position. So like, one
writer kills Old Lace off and writers are immediately like "No wait! I was using that!".
-Old Lace is a Deinonychus, which is a highly-dangerous adversary in any sense of the term,
but she also appears to be an ENHANCED version, as certainly no common Deinonychus
could take apart Thunderball of the Wrecking Crew with such surprising ease. She's also
immune to Dagger's "Light Dagger" power for whatever reason, and has taken down
numerous members of The Runaways' parental units.

Complications:
Motivation (Gathering Worshippers & Might)
Weakness (Trapped)- Almost all of the Elder Gods are trapped within their own dimensions,
having been beaten years ago by The Demogorge. Despite their great power, they are usually
bound to their dimensional boundaries.
Relationship (The Punishier)- Olivier deliberately set up Frank Castle's family to be executed
by the mob, knowing what would happen- he now gathers the souls the Punisher sends to
Hell.

Total: Abilities: 162 / Skills: 72--36 / Advantages: 24 / Powers: 365 / Defenses: 21 (618)

-Frank Costa was a generic Mobster, but was the one responsible for the infamous slaying of
Frank Castle's innocent family when they walked in on a gangland slaying. Castle, as The
Punisher, witnessed him (though he was off-panel in the initial story). A comic from 1998
revealed that Costa was actually the human form of Olivier, a previously-unseen Hell-Lord
who was once Prince of Archangels... this is during the "Angel-Punisher" years, I see. Oh
God... it turns out he actually KNEW that Castle's family would walk in on the slaying, and
thus Everything You Knew Was Wrong, that most-infamous and utterly-stupid of Comic
Book Retcons. Why are writers so OBSESSED with that trope!?!

-So yeah, it turns out that he WANTED Castle to become The Punisher, because all of
Castle's victims were to then become Olivier's slaves once his Costa form was done away
with (he was only in that form because he was trapped by his rival Hell-Lords). He
brainwashed Frank into killing himself, but Frank was resurrected by his Guardian Angel (oh
god) who sent him on a war against Olivier's minions- the Angel Gadriel sacrificed his
existence to stop Olivier, sending him into some... Hell Tentacles (this'd be the end of the
"Angel Punisher" thing- the worst of the initial Marvel Knights run that was quickly-ignored).
Olivier of course reappeared, working with the Demon Pazuzu in Lucifer's court, but
Nightcrawler & Magik stopped them.

Lol WTF is that helmet even?

OLLERUS THE UNMERCIFUL

Created By: David Kraft & Ed Hannigan
First Appearance: Defenders #66 (Dec. 1978)
Role: Evil Warlord
Group Affiliations: None

-Ollerus was a failed, dishonorable Asgardian warrior who had intentions on usurping Hela's
role as the Lord of the Dead in Niflheim. He recruited Casiolena & Poppo the Cunning as his
top agents, and had thousands of humans killed to join his army in Valhalla, where Hela had
gained control. He told them all that Hela was responsible for their deaths, and even
convinced the Defenders to fight on his behalf! He nearly had Hela beaten when the heroes
realized they were on the wrong side- they turned on him, and ultimately the Hul smashed his
"Moving Mountain" base and he was sent falling into Niflheim. When he promised to return
with an army, Hela decided to go there herself as well to protect her power base, I guess. She
relinquished control of Valhalla, the slain humans were restored to life, and Ollerus, who
never got much backstory in the first place, never returned. A few strange three-issue story.

-Ollerus doesn't have any powers shown- he is merely a guy in a suit of blue & purple armor,
a really long loincloth on the front, and an ENORMOUS, toothy helmet.

-Olvido had mysterious powers that allowed him to challenge Magneto, who had the
Customary Super-Heroic Power Downgrade in the X-Books around this time. His powers
allow him to do the classic "Absorb & Redirect Energy" thing, which is, naturally, an
effective weapon against Magneto and his Pink Magnetic Blasts. Later, when he tried a
similar move, Anole swooped in and knocked him out using his stealth mode.

The Olympians

Post by Jabroniville » Fri Oct 20, 2017 8:23 pm

MARVEL'S GREEK GODS:

-As I've said many times before, I'm a HUGE fan of Greek Mythology- they're basically the
greatest Super-Heroes of antiquity, but more in the Marvel vein than the DC one- intensely-
flawed, demanding, possibly-psychotic super-beings constantly engaged in feuds and battles
with each other. They're such a natural element of comics that both companies have
repeatedly interjected the Olympians into their superhero tales, though often with a lot of
things changed.

The popularity of Thor led to the expansion of the Norse mythos over time, and so it was
only natural that the Greek Gods followed- Hercules was depicted as a bragging, boorish lout
that frequently challenged Thor, but was ultimately heroic himself- a pretty solid "Rival
Hero" character. The Gods were pretty slow in coming, however- Hercules and Zeus debuted
in the same 1965 Journey Into Mystery Annual, and Ares & Pluto came the next year, but
many of the others (including major names like Apollo, Hephaestus and others) waited until
1976, eleven years later. Eris does not appear until 1993. Curiously, some are depicted with
Latin names, such as Pluto (Hades) and Bacchus (Dionysus). Marvel makes it pretty clear
these are the same beings by different names.

There's a hierarchy at work- Zeus is the leader, but is usually just seen giving orders. Unlike
most typical depictions, he is red-headed (he is typically white-haired in modern depictions,
largely thanks to the marble statues that remain being white- these were painted in antiquity,
however; Zeus is likely black-haired in Greek imagination). Poseidon rules beneath the seas,
and is actively worshipped by Marvel's Atlanteans. Pluto is the God of the Underworld, and
thanks to that association, is basically a soul-grabbing, Chaotic Evil sort, much like Marvel's
Hela and other Hell-Lords, of which he is a lowish-ranking member. Hera is usually seen as
more reasonable and calm, and Athena a mere backgrounder. The other Gods are largely
superfluous, appearing only rarely, and in stories featuring ALL of the Greek Gods.

An issue with these guys is the lack of a regular title- a series of the 1950s featured "Venus",
but that has largely been ignored (for example, it features a non-continuity Marvel debut of
Thor), with a replica of that character showing up in Agents of Atlas, murking up the origin.
Other than that... they're mostly side-characters in the Thor book, with Hercules getting the
occasional rare placement on The Avengers here and there. Herc was really only on the team
for a portion of the 1980s (leading to his incapacitation at the hands of the Masters of Evil),
and a portion of the dreaded "1990s Bomber Jacket Phase" team, sporting giant shoulder
pads, stubble, and long Kevin Sorbo hair. This means that most of the Gods are at best only
ancillary characters, beneath the Asgardians in importance.

The greatest use of them by far was in The Incredible Hercules, a several-year run featuring
Herc, written by Grek Pak & Fred Van Lente. This brilliant, comedic series had Herc team up
with teen genius snark-ass Amadeus Cho in a bunch of wacky adventures that often featured
real drama, dangerous bad guys, and a lot of wit. It mixed boorish humor about Herc's man-
whoring with some clever jokes and references to the oddities found in mythology. And it did
a great job in expanding the Greek Pantheon, with Hera acting more like her true mythical
self, Ares acting like a huge blowhard, and Athena acting as a great combination of mentor-
figure and manipulator.

THE OLYMPIANS (Greeks & Romans):

Skyfather: Zeus (Thunder, Sky)
Others: Aprhrodite (Love), Apollo (Light & The Sun), Ares (War- Savage), Artemis (The
Hunt & The Moon), Athena (Wisdom & War- Tactical), Demeter (Plant Growth), Dionysus
(Wine & Partying), Eos (Dawn), Hephaestus (The Forge, Fire & Metal), Helios (Old Sun
God), Hera (Marriage & Childbirth), Hercules (Strength), Hermes (Commerce, Messengers
& Travellers), Hestia/Vesta (Hearth & Home), Poseidon/Neptune (The Sea), Pluto/Hades
(The Dead)
-The famous Greek Gods, who later became Roman and got the Planets named after them.
They show up second-most after the Norse, as Hercules is a fabled super-hero, and the
Greeks are easily-used for whatever crazy scheme is going on, as they're so fundamentally
screwed-up and thus, interesting characters to use.

Responsibility (Rookie)- Michael is inexperienced with the use of some of the powers he's
absorbed.

Total: Abilities: 30 / Skills: 8--4 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 251 / Defenses: 9 (301)

-So this guy's appeared in a bunch of Marvel comics over the past twelve years, but of course
I've not READ any of them, so I'm pretty clueless as to him. He's probably most infamous for
being the guy who "Alpha Flighted" Alpha Flight, setting down in Canada and one-shotting
the entire team, killing everyone but Sasquatch. Why'd this happen? Because the vast
majority of the Mutant population of Earth had just been de-powered by the Scarlet Witch,
you see, but this ONE GUY, whose power was to absorb the powers and personalities of
other mutants, just happened to absorb EVERYTHING from that run-off, thus gaining the
combined powers of every de-powered mutant on Earth. With the consciousness of the evil
Xorn controlling him, Michael Pointer, a postman, went on a rampage, killing over 2,000
people and Alpha Flight before the Avengers stopped him.

-In the process, he'd re-powered Magneto, but had gained back his original personality- as
penance for his actions, he was forced to join Canada's new Omega Flight (alongside some
post-Civil War guys like U.S. Agent, Julia "Spider-Woman/Arachne" Carpenter, and the still-
alive Sasquatch). During the course of the Omega Flight series, he gainst he forgiveness of
both 'Squatch and Talisman (the orphaned daughter of Shaman, whom Michael killed), and is
told to live up to the legacy of the Guardian uniform he's wearing.

-With Omega Flight done, Michael popped up as Weapon Omega in a new Marvel Comics
Presents series, capturing villains and unknowingly absorbing their energies, since his own
"Collective" powers were wearing off. Turns out this was a government plot that he was
ignorant of- he would quit Omega Flight at the end of the series, kicking his addiction to
these powers. He later joins Emma Frost's "Dark X-Men" during Dark Reign, with Norman
Osborn giving him a device that siphoned powers from other mutants. Pointer gets
ANOTHER addiction to powers, then drops his name to just "Omega", and begins adopting
personality traits of some of the mutants that empower him. And then, of course, Marvel just
WROTE HIM OUT, having him placed into a medically & psionically-induced coma by the
X-Men, lest he explode from all of his surplus power.

-I mean... Jesus. It looks like Bendis just threw ALL OF THE POWERS into a one-off threat,
perhaps forgetting that the rest of the Marvel U had to now LIVE with this guy, and so
various writers gave their half-assed try at the character, who was never particularly deep in
the first place. So what we ended up with was someone trying the "Reptentant Hero" schtick
(not normally so bad an idea), but ultimately got saddled with some Sentry-esque "Power
Addict" shite, then mixed him up with various creative teams so that they repeated the SAME
IDEA in another book.

-The Collective/Weapon Omega/Omega is YET ANOTHER guy with "All Of The Powers",
this time manifesting as having absorbed all of the excess energies from Wanda Maximoff
going "No More Mutants", but eventually gaining them from Mutant Growth Hormone-
infused humans and other sources. This manifests as a PL 10 Jumped-Up Nobody type of
character, but the Variable/Mimic EASILY pushes him to PL 12- in his debut, he was
arguably PL 14-15, but seems to have settled down a lot more.

The Omega Clan

Post by Jabroniville » Tue May 29, 2018 1:13 am

THE OMEGA CLAN:
Created By: Rick Remender & Mike McKone
First Appearance: The Uncanny X-Force #25 (July 2012)

-With Omega Red deceased, the "White Sky" organization was hired to create three clones of
Arkady, and had false memories implanted that made them despise the members of the
modern X-Force. Deadpool, Nightcrawler and Wolverine were attacked, but Wade managed
to send his own White Sky creation- Alpha Achromic- against them. The trio reappeared as
members of Daken's Brotherhood. They attempted to push Evan Sabahnur into becoming the
new Apocalypse, but he rejected them, apparently killing Omega Red II. Omega White
attacked, but Psylocke forced him to absorb the Shadow King's mind, then mind-wiped
White, leaving both of them comatose.

-Omega Red II later reappeared fighting Deadpool and acting as a mercenary for Roxxon Oil,
but formed an alliance with Wade, realizing that he needed to make his own path in life.
Omega Black eventually reappeared, stating that she'd become a vessel for the Shadow King.

Omega Black: A female named Sylvia, she had five Carbonadium tendrils in her chest, and
could infect people with real-world diseases like cancer (!!).
Omega White: He could create Energy Tendrils that drained foes of psychic energy, as well
as render himself intangible.
Omega Red II: The closest in appearance and nature to the original.

Omega Flight

Post by Jabroniville » Tue Jan 10, 2017 6:27 am

OMEGA FLIGHT:
-Omega Flight (the second version) was formed by The Master of the World as a Mook Army
to capture Alpha Flight member Talisman at the mall, but were beaten by Windshear and
Beta Flight (the trainees of the Alphans). They're pretty much a team of one-note losers who
did nothing, but reappeared as James Hudson returned as The Antiguard, after being modified
by The Master.

-The original Omega Flight were formed by Jerome Jaxon to fight Guardian and Alpha
Flight. It gathered the various people booted out of Alpha Flight's training program into one
squad- Diamond Lil, Flashback, Smart Alec and Wild Child. Along with Jaxon's robot
secretary Delphine Courtney, they faced Alpha Flight in West Edmonton Mall, where
Madison Jeffries destroyed Courtney, and Jaxon was killed by Guardian overloading the Box
robot the villain was controlling. The other members went on to their various fates (Lil &
Wild Child eventually joined the Alphans).

-The second Omega Flight was formed by The Master of the World. Their purpose was the
same, but their membership was now a band of ridiculous, one-note Jobbers, because part of
being a super-genius in Marvel Comics includes not being able to tell between powerful
villains and a band of gigantic morons (a problem also afflicting Magneto, Stryfe and
Apocalypse, clearly). When the Master fails in his goal, he takes it out on his team,
slaughtering every one of them except Brain Drain.

-A third Omega Flight was part of the fallout of Marvel's Civil War- a band of superheroes
who abandoned America after it instituted the Superhuman Registration Act instead moved to
Canada (which... already HAD such an act). It was a short-lived Limited Series. A fourth
Omega Flight was briefly seen in Hickman's Avengers run, investigating one of Ex Nihilo's
pod-thingies in Canada. The characters received no characterization whatsoever. I mean, they
were one-off characters in a book that was so overloaded that members of the actual
Avengers went months without appearing.

Total: Abilities: 76 / Skills: 64--32 / Advantages: 32 / Powers: 73 / Defenses: 15 (228)

Omega Red- Coulda-Been Villain:

-Omega Red is one of my faves from back in the day, mainly because of his awesome, unique
Jim Lee-drawn appearance. A giant albino with huge freaking tentacles, a death-effect, red
armour, and the whole badass aura of being Russian? I was there, dude. The fact that he could
absolutely kick the CRAP out of an entire team of X-Men made him a real terror. I mean,
"New Villain Stink" is a thing for a reason, and this was one of those cases where it really
made an impression on me.

-Unfortunately, they demoted him pretty quickly, having him lose to Generation-X (no,
really- Chamber WHUPPED him), and be the lackey to the one-time villain Soul Skinner.
Later revisions haven't made him the elite villain he could've been early on, effectively
turning him into an elite Hired Goon (despite an appearance in the X-Men Fighting Game...
though that could just be the Japanese game designers demanding someone with tentacles
being put in ), but I'm still waiting. He's one of the X-villains with potential, who WASN'T
driven into the ground from over-use, but nonetheless turned out to be pretty minor (he was a
Russian version of The Kingpin for a bit).

Evil Russian Baddie:

-Arkady Rossovich was an elite killer and cold-hearted murderer, killing dozens before being
recruited into the Soviet "Super-Soldier" program- the result of a Russian system to create
their own Captain America. Because OF COURSE Russia would take a murderer and decide
to TRAIN HIM TO BE A BETTER KILLER. They gave him some "Carbonadium" metal
tentacles, but these had a fatal side-effect- he had to drain the life out of people in order to
maintain his own survival. Only the "Carbonadium Synthesizer" could save his life. It was
then that "Team X"- a band made up of earlier versions of Wolverine, Sabretooth and
Maverick- arrived, and they stole away with it. This was their final mission- they blew up
over Sabretooth casually murdering the double-agent they'd come to rescue, fearing her a
"liability" (Logan calls him a "Psychotic sonova--" and implies he murdered her in cold blood
because he panicked).

-Unable to survive on his own without murder (and generally being uncontrollabe),
Rossovich was placed into cryogenic storage for decades, only being taken out of it thanks to
the willing sacrifice of a dozen Hand Ninjas, at the behest of Matsu'o Tsurayaba. He hunted
Logan, believing that he knew where the Synthesizer was- he beat Logan once (as well as
one-punching The Beast, then taking out Cyclops & Jubilee in one move each), but was
beaten in the second fight as the X-Men escaped.

Subsequent Appearances:
-Created by Jim Lee JUST before he left Marvel, Omega Red was kind of left without a
protector, and so he just became "one of those guys", showing up in various stories. In one
book, he's beaten and mind-controlled by the Soul Skinner, who himself dies in that story. He
jobs out in Generation-X in a "humiliating" manner according to Wikipedia, and later loses to
Daredevil & The Black Widow. He FINALLY got a regular gig in more modern times, acting
as a head of the Russian Mafia, and dealing with Wolverine off and on. He's captured, then
sprung by a deal between the U.S. & Russia, and beaten again by Logan, Nightcrawler &
Colossus. He allies with Wild Child and attempts to dip Logan into molten metal to finally
kill him off once and for all, but Wild Child isntead suffers that fate- Omega Red is later
killed by the Muramasa Blade, wielded by Logan himself. He briefly reappeared in Hell
(Logan went there for some stuff), but was finally resurrected by some Russian baddies,
eventually scoring a true resurrection before being arrested.

-Omega Red remains one of those odd villains who's got some credibility, but is more of a
"short arc" kind of guy with no credibility as a mastermind- he's just too much of a blank-
slate "Nineties Villain" with not much personality beyond "Hates Wolverine" and "Wants the
Carbonadium Synthesizer". Kind of a shame- he's one of those baddies who could really have
been boosted into something- he's one Good Showing or Movie Appearance away from being
a big deal.

The Power of Omega Red:

-Omega Red is a freakishly devastating build, PL 11 with his Life Drain, and PL 10.5-11 on
offense in general (and PL 11 with his Parry defense). Combined with his versatility and
constantly-active powers, it's enough to challenge a whole squad of X-Men, especially when
combined with his normal Death Spores, capable of dropping Gambit AND Rogue
simultaneously, and killing dozens of normal humans in his radius. New Villain Stink
allowed him to cut a hole through any X-Team initially (Beast was one-punched, and
Cyclops was taken out in an instant), and even after that he was quite dangerous. FEAR the
"Free Action" Extra- he can use it simultaneously with any of his other powers, only turning
it off when "allies" come within reach. It's a Linked Affliction (many victims just drop
unconscious) & Weaken Stamina (others die) effect, and is one of the most dangerous things
a super-villain has ever used as a baseline power.

Omega Sentinel

She's a nothing character, but she cuts a pretty impressive visual- I'll give her that.

Complications:
Vulnerable (Magnetic & Electrical Attacks)- As a partial cyborg, Karima is comprised of
materials that are more easily damaged by such attacks.
Responsibility (Trapped in a Mechanical Body)- Karima is quite displeased at her current
situation, to be sure. It also makes her SUPER, SUPER EASY to take over mentally.

Total: Abilities: 42 / Skills: 26--13 / Advantages: 9 / Powers: 71 / Defenses: 9 (144)

-Wouldn't have ever learned about this one if not for a Wiki-check over the roster of the X-
Men to see if I was missing anybody. Originally a throwaway character in Neal Shaara's
origin story, Karima turned up YEARS later in continuity, still as an Omega Sentinel (the
human-esque ones that transformed into mutant hunters). She joined Rogue's X-Men team for
about five seconds, then got taken over by Malice of the Marauders. Now she's doing...
something. Pretty much a throwaway character.

-Karima was a police officer in India, but was one of many people turned into an Omega
Sentinel by Bastion during Operation: Zero Tolerance. She was dispatched to take out Neal
"Thunderbird" Shaara, but she convinced him to escape before the transformation was
complete. She was later "cured" of her programming by Professor X & Magneto, and became
an X-ally. However, she was later taken back over by Malice of the Marauders, and fought
the X-Men over several months during various uninteresting, go-nowhere crossovers. She
briefly joins the Acolytes, gets injured by teammate Frenzy for defending Magneto, then
fights the X-Men AGAIN when something else takes over her mind. Pretty much that's her
entire thing- That Chick Who Gets Taken Over.

-Lots of techno-tricks, and some half-decent firepower, Karima's not that bad for a
throwaway. Her Sentinel upgrades give her an enhanced Stamina score, help her heal, and
give her a big swack of powers for a PL 9.

Steve Gerber- Beloved, Respected Weirdo:

-As a comic fan, I missed out on the entirety of the whole "Steve Gerber" thing- I never saw
the Howard the Duck explosion (which entered the MAINSTREAM it was so big!), nor this
series, which he considered his "Magnum Opus". However, like a lot of high-reaching, artsy
projects, it suffered from low sales, running ten issues before being cancelled- Jim Shooter
has commented on similar things, like how Jim Starlin's Warlock was mind-expanding, weird
stuff in the '70s, and had artisitic merit, but was of course never anything that was going to be
popular, and it too failed to sell.

-Gerber has stated that he "wanted to do a series about a real kid who was nobody's sidekick,
facing real problems in what today would be called a 'grim 'n gritty' setting." The titular
"Omega" in the title (an android created by the extinct Protarian race) was paired up with
James-Michael Starling, an unusually-analytical twelve-year-old boy that discovered Omega
when his spaceship crashed. A prophetic orphan with a strange emotional detachment (his
parents had home-schooled him, and were now trying to work on his social skills), James-
Michael learns that his parents are robots, and then they're KILLED, and he develops powers
like he imagines Omega to have in his dreams, but the main point of the series is to explore
the world as Gerber sees it- things like racism, bullying, etc., are discussed. This is pretty
close to the "Comics As Art" thing that didn't really sell great, but a more-commercialized
version of it definitely hit the 1980s, where a lot of writers (namely Chris Claremont) dealt
with the same stuff in more-standard superhero tales. THERE, you could have the best of
both worlds- Social Commentary AND Super-Fights with recognizable characters. As it
stands, Gerber's Opus probably would have been more at home in the Creator-Owned/Indie
Comics thing that's become a lot bigger now than it was in, say, 1976.

Omega’s Fate:
-That's not to say there weren't super-fights- Omega fought The Hulk, Blockbuster, Electro,
Foolkiller and others, and James-Michael himself would be revealed to have been the REAL
ultimate creation of the Protarians, and Omega had been sent to Earth instinctively to protect
him. Gerber intended to complete the series' story in his Defenders run, but was fired before
he got the chance- afterwards, Al Milgrom (Editor of The Defenders) assigned the new
writer, Steve Grant, to complete the story (as fans were now writing it asking about the
story's ending). Grant responded by KILLING OFF most of the series' characters in a two-
issue arc! Omega was shot dead by the Las Vegas police department while fighting Ruby
Thursday (the cops thought he was assaulting Ruby instead of just defending himself)-
James-Michael inherited Omega's powers and learned the truth of his origins (which he
refused to believe). He threatened to use his powers against the Defenders, but committed
suicide after seeing the error of his decision.

-You can imagine this didn't make Gerber happy. Grant, for his part, basically confesses to
not giving a crap about the characters and being TOLD to write the story (Editors, you see,
can often turn writers into "Ghost Writers", forcing them to write what THEY want to see),
and approached it like how he thought Gerber would. A revamped version was created in
2005- Gerber basically declared the writer, Jonathan Lethem, to be his eternal enemy as a
result- to call Gerber a "Creators' Rights" enthusiast would be a HUGE understatement (his
battles with Marvel over Howard the Duck would become the stuff of legend); however, to
his credit, he later met with the writer and admitted he'd "misjudged him". The series was
well-thought-of, but I've practically never even heard of it- I KNOW I had no idea it existed
when it came out. Very peculiar stuff.

-A later story has revealed that James-Michael was trapped in "Other-Realm" after Omega
died, and Chthon is battling him there before the Scarlet Witch returns him to Earth. He is
seen wearing the costume and title of "Omega", while his "mother", a floating robotic head, is
taking care of him.

Omega’s Powers:
-Omega is basically a generic Flying Blaster- he's more notable for the kinds of stories being
told than his powers.

Omegex

OMEGEX
Created By: Jeff Parker & Ben Olivier
First Appearance: The Hulk #29 (March 2011)
Role: Kill-O-Bot
Group Affiliations: None

-The Omegex was created by a race that meant for it to be a "Destroyer"-like armor to keep
them alive- it didn't work. Powered by the life forces of those it killed, the Omegex went
crazy and started killing "all potential threats" to its creators, which to the Omegex meant
everybody. Finally it attacked the Watchers, who repelled the thing. It spent centuries trying
to find them, only detecting a sliver of their energy when the Red Hulk punched Uatu, and
thus Omegex attacked Rulk in a huge fight. The first time, Rulk & Black Fog teamed up
against it, and in the second, it nearly killed Rulk until he turned back into Thunderbolt Ross
and thus Omegex lost the energy signature- it then voluntarily disintegrated, assuming its
target was dead. Kind of an ass-pull right there.

-Omegex showcased enough strength and durability to match the Red Hulk in a fight (though
took some damage from Black Fog), never tired, could track energy signatures, and used
Tractor Beams to draw things towards him.

-Adding to the Future Foundation after the introduction of the others is Onome, who hails

after all). She's pretty much just another face, but they probably needed "another human" in
this motley crew of oddities.

-Onslaught (now THERE'S a name they won't be using again any time soon... silly Imperial
Guard and their coming up with copy-able names) was a one-note Karate Kid rip-off, who
buffetted Quasar around a bunch before Wendell clued in and put up a suit of Light Armour
that hurt the poor copy's fists. He had no personality shown and you couldn't really tell what
his powers were, but he was obviously tough enough to hurt Quasar through his most basic
shielding, so I'm going with a standard PL 9 Chi-Guy build (aka "Does Extra Damage With
Punches"). He can use his MANY varied Cap-Switchers (Power, All-Out, Defensive) to
pummel at up to +11 Damage if he needs to.

-And God, is that the worst super-hero uniform ever or what? All credit to Gruenwald for
trying to invent new Guardsmen to fit the unused Legion of Super-Heroes characters, but
WOW did Greg Capullo (the artist) let everyone down on this. This guy's just some loser in a
jumpsuit with the Jim Lee Half-Helmet going on! What were they thinking? "Oh, we'll never
see this guy again, so I'm not gonna waste any of my costume-building energies on him."
Huh, now that you mention it, I kind of get why he, Hardball, Voyager & Glom are so lame.
If I were the artist on Quasar, *I* wouldn't waste good super-hero costume designs on those
losers, either! Only Dave Cockrum had enough inventiveness to freely give Shi'ar losers the
great costumes and still have some left over.

Onslaught- The Big Bad of the '90s:

-Onslaught is one of those iconic '90s characters and wannabe Mega-Villains that generally
got ignored after a period of time- having stopped collecting comics RIGHT BEFORE HIS
DEBUT, I missed out on his whole run (though I read an issue here or there featuring the
build-up, like his "New Villain Stink" moment of jobbing out The Juggernaut by punching
him cross-country), and when I returned in 2000 or so, he'd been long gone and nobody
seemed to mention him again. It turns out his origins were in the sequence in X-Men #25,
where Professor X mind-wiped Magneto (after Mags had ripped the Adamantium from
Wolverine's body)- the influx of dark rage into Xavier's soul eventually (after a series of
failures on Xavier's part, including the failed rehabilitation of Sabretooth and the death of an
innocent mutant by racists) manifesting into a low-level Cosmic Being (COMICS, am I
right?). This thus capped off the "Who Killed the X-Men?" mystery that was a huge part of
Bishop's backstory, as in his timeline the X-Men were slain by one of their own.

-Onslaught makes a few plans using minions (Post, Mimic, an empowered Blob) but is
mostly just a Big Evil Genocidal Guy who attacks the good guys, resulting in a massive
knock-down, drag-out fight in New York City involving nearly every active superhero at
Marvel from that time. Jean Grey even telepathically turns the Hulk into a feral rage-monster
to put him at maximum power, shredding Onslaught's armor! Along the way, his kidnapped
victims include Xavier himself, Nate Grey & Franklin Richards. However, what keeps
Onslaught from being Just Another Evil Cosmic Guy is the results- to do some dumb-ass de-
powering thing, the heroes have to dive into Onslaught's untouchable Energy Form so that he
can become solid, and thus killable to others. The end result of course KILLING THEM,
which leads to the greatest mass-death of major characters in Marvel history: The Fantastic
Four, The Hulk (who separated from Bruce Banner), Doctor Doom and The Avengers are all
killed, because only humans could absorb the energy (Scarlet Witch was written in because
of her Reality Warping powers... they just wanted to write their way out of THAT one,
obviously...). Naturally, Spider-Man was the only major human hero left alive.

Heroes Reborn:
-This led to the creation of the Heroes Reborn universe (a controversial idea that basically
saw Marvel stunt-hire Jim Lee & Rob Liefeld to re-work their '60s heroes- Lee's stuff was
well-received, while Liefeld's was... not. His stuff was ugly as hell and was written like
garbage (he'd copy his Cap work onto another couple lame rip-off series, thus draining his
legacy EVEN MORE), but in general, most fans thought this was dumb, and when the heroes
Returned a few years later, this was mostly dropped and ignored. However, I would argue the
whole thing had a POSITIVE effect on comics as a whole, as it was like the final death of the
"Iron Age of Comics"- the grittiness and crappiness went away, The Avengers got rebooted
under Busiek & Perez (before this, it was dying on a vine- the whole "Tony Stark was a
traitor all along" thing and Teen Tony Stark and whatever were KILLING THEM), we got
The Thunderbolts (who'd debuted to replace the dead heroes), and more. We kind of needed
this weird darkness before the dawn- it washed all the garbage away.

-2006 saw the return of the character in a Limited Series nobody seems to remember- he was
reborn when the Scarlet Witch depowered most mutants, and Xavier & Magneto's powers
combined to reform him. He was defeated in the Heroes Reborn universe, as Rikki Barnes
(the Bucky of that world) trapped him in the Negative Zone, stranding her on Earth-616. He
would show up once again to control Rikki, and she would commit suicide to prevent his
return.
Red Onslaught:
-A concept of Onslaught reappears, as "Red Onslaught", in the story where a clone of the Red
Skull possesses the telepathic might of Charles Xavier. An enraged Magneto slaughters the
Skull, but the proximity to Xavier's powers reforms an "Onslaught"-tier being with the Skull's
personality. The resulting threat is so huge that Magneto summons a band of Marvel's villains
to help, and Doctor Doom & the Scarlet Witch attempt to fend off Red Onslaught by casting
a "moral inversion" spell to put Xavier's mind in control of the creature. This backfires as a
backlash inverts most of the heroes and villains present, starting the AXIS event. Various
characters turn good or evil and everything is messed up for a bit, but Red Onslaught
becomes the good "White Skull"- a normal human attempting to make things right. Possibly
being Xavier in control, the White Skull undoes the inversion, sacrificing himself as the Red
Skull returns.

-This story was... dumb. I mean, "Everyone switches sides" was honestly a GREAT idea, but
their means for this was ridiculous. You form the Extinction Level Event in Onslaught
controlled by the RED FREAKING SKULL, but it's only as an excuse to invert everyone for
a few months? Then you just do away with the guy entirely by story's end like it never
mattered? Never mind that the event story kind of buggered a lot of active comics (it was also
used to write out the "Havok & Wasp are together FOREVERRRRRRRRRR" thing Rick
Remender was trying to do. In the end, AXIS proved unpopular, though a few characters
maintained their inversion (like Havok).

Onslaught's Might:
-Onslaught is basically a super-powered combo of Professor X's Mental Powers, Nate Grey's
Telekinesis, some Magneto stuff, plus Franklin Richards' Reality Warping power, turning
him into a Super-Powerhouse. Oddly, his Power Feats aren't entirely that apparent in combat-
aside from punching The Juggernaut across a continent, he seemed to struggle to bring down
whole super-teams, despite all of his power. However, he IS nigh-unkillable, which is why he
was so dangerous and the heroes had to sacrifice themselves to kill him- he effectively had
little to worry about from their physical attacks (when a fully-psychotic Hulk punched
through his armour, he was left an untouchable field of energy), and could basically out-
attrition anybody, even IF he didn't really manage to beat anyone up in the final battle.

-His biggest feats of power involve basically taking the attacks of all of Earth's heroes at
once, creating a Citadel that no power could break though (The Vision's intangibility was
needed), and creating a second Sun in Earth's atmosphere that threatened to tear apart the
planet (over time). Otherwise, he's your everyday unstoppable Cosmic Menace (with PL 16
defenses and the ability to do basically everything).

-Onyxx may be the coolest looking (and coolest-named) of the entire X-Students, which is
funny, because he's not only redundant (Rockslide & Bling! have almost the exact same
powers, but with MORE VERSATILITY), but a complete backgrounder, prone to "Those
Two Guys" appearances with Bling!, Glob Herman or Anole in the back of scenes as
recognizable "obvious mutants". He's a big, strong guy who's not that bright, but isn't a
jokester like Santo is- his only real characterization came when he fell in love with teammate
"Foxx" (actually Mystique) and fought Gambit when Foxx went after the Cajun instead.

-Aaaaaaaaaaand of course being "A Poor Man's Rockslide" on a roster that INCLUDED
ROCKSLIDE, the dude pretty much had a target on his head from day-one- it took a bit (he
lasted past Decimation/M-Day and The Purifiers story-arcs), but during Necrosha (aka
"Blackest Night: Marvel Edition"), he came across a now-evil Wither, who effortlessly one-
shotted him to death. He was one of only a couple people who died that arc (along with
Diamond Lil), and even NAMOR was left going "well why the F are we mourning these D-
League Losers?" Cyclops basically noted that sure; these were bottom-tier nobodies, but
EVERY death counts when the Mutant Race is being diminished.

-Onyxx is a PL 7 like Bling!, but WAY under-pointed for how tough he is. He's basically
what a Powerhouse/Brick build looks like in it's infant form, being heavy, Class 25 strong,
and having some grappling abilities, but also being very, VERY inaccurate (most of the X-
Students, you'll notice, have pretty crappily low Attack & Defense Bonuses, but Onyxx is
even worse than the usual "upgraded" student).

Oonagh Mullarkey

Post by Jabroniville » Tue Sep 13, 2022 4:51 am

DR. OONAGH MULLARKEY
Created By: Gary Frank & Graham Mark
First Appearance: Motormouth #1 (June 1992)
Role: Sexy Doctor
'90s Ratio: 6/10 (serious professional but still shows gigaton cleavage)

-Okay, this is a little funny- both Death's Head II AND Motormouth featured hot, sexy
female doctors with reddish hair as major manipulators and mad scientists as recurring major
characters. Dr. Oonagh Mullarkey (still the most bizarre name I’ve ever heard) appears in
Motormouth as a primary scientist at Gene-Sys labs, moving from animal experimentation to
human genetics. Her work leads to the creation of Killpower- whom she names Julius
Mallarkey, acting as his surrogate mother. She directed his learning, turning him into an giant
assassin only 18 months after his birth. She protested her bosses' orders to send Killpower
after Motormouth with a teleporting MOPED unit, but they insisted, and he ended up running
off with Motormouth once she taught him that murder was wrong. Though they opposed her
now, Killpower still saw her as enough of a mother-figure to save her from further harm
when Motormouth KO'd Oonagh with a rifle-butt.

-Oonagh appeared in later Marvel UK books as well, such as Genetix, where it was revealed
they were also her creations (and had once helped her re-capture a runaway Killpower). She
was kidnapped by another band of old creations- the hyper-intelligent apes Prime Evil and his
"Pride"- who were hidden away in the Savage Land, and the Genetix had to retrieve her.
However, when they learned her true motives and backstory (with MyS-TECH secretly
behind everything), they abandoned her, and she created the group "Tektos" out of alien &
human DNA to replace them. Scolded by MyS-TECH for her various failures, she attempted
to recreate a mystic ceremony of her boss to empower herself, but this split her into two
forms- a more evil version of herself and the good "Plasmer" in the Plasmer series. She later
tried to reprogram Genetix to serve her again, but they broke free.
-So all in all, Dr. Mullarkey is like... exactly Dr. Evelyn Necker, but in a different book.
Different bosses but the same fundamental "pretty evil Fanservice doctor lady" who ends up
creating the subject of the book but is then opposed by them. Marvel UK tossed her into the
origins of both Plasmer and Genetix, which is kinda weird, too.

-On a team book featuring Alan Davis' artwork on a leather-bodysuited dominatrix lookalike,
Kitty Pryde at maximum likable cuteness, and a chick that looked like Pamela Anderson with
elf ears, OPAL LUNA SATURNYNE stood out as "The Hot One". Which is all the sadder,
because the character ended up being an annoying, confusing waste thanks to excessive drug
use on the part of the creators. Saturnyne was from Earth-9, and was the "Omniversal
Majestrix", which seems like an all-powerful position, but she was really just an agent of
Roma's (who herself was subserviant to Merlyn, her father), and a pencil-pusher who moved
stuff around. A classic bureaucrat, people and planets were just numbers to her, and so she
thought nothing of sacrificing billions for the purpose of safety for the omniverse as a whole.

-Rather emotionless, Saturnyne was served by her assistant Dimples, who worshipped her.
Her agents were The Avant Guard- a bunch of suit-wearing men with umbrellas that were
actually high-powered Dimension-Traveling Devices and Blasters. Failing in her duty to
protect the universe of Mad Jim Jaspers from his "Jaspers Warp", she was arrested and
replaced by a man named Mandragon, who exterminated Earth-238 and its entire universe to
prevent the Warp from extending into the rest of the omniverse. Thankfully, Saturnyne was
able to aid Captain Britain against Earth-616's Jaspers, and she threatened Mandragon with a
clone of Jaspers unless he ceded his position back to her.
-Later, she sends The Technet after Phoenix, an act which causes the formation of Excalibur
in Chris Claremont's new Marvel project (this, naturally, was Roma's plan). She later resents
Capt. Britain for becoming the ruler of Otherworld (she finds him unworthy). Claremont
being one of the few to care about her, she shows up in the Fantastic Four arc about Abraxas,
protecting Franklin & Valeria Richards. Her last acts involved the multiple Incursions during
Hickman's Avengers run, though this was long after everything had spiraled out of control.

-Not a fighter at all, Saturnyne is instead a Bureaucrat of the highest order- an agent that's
always manipulating things from above. She basically has access to anything she needs
through her Benefit, however. Honestly, though, it's hard to find many instances where she
really MATTERS- it seems more like Alan Davis wanted to draw another impossibly-
beautiful woman, but nobody thought to give her much of a ROLE.

Other versions of Saturnyne are known to exist:

Sat'neen: Kylun's love on Earth-148. A Sorceress who was killed by Necrom.

Queen Mother- The Queen of England on Earth-1193, a world of magic and mystical
creatures.
Courtney Ross: Brian Braddock's girlfriend on the main Earth (616). Basically just a Token
Girlfriend Character, treated like an afterthought in Excalibur before she was killed by...

-One of the more useful Guardsmen due to her Telepathic powers, Oracle is nonetheless
pretty reliant on her teammates, since she has little in the way of defensive power. Her Stun is
really good, but the rest of her is horribly vulnerable to attack. I do like the pastel look of her
costume though- it's very stand-out and bizarre. Avoid the '90s versions, as they tend to have
obvious '90s hair and mohawks and crap for whatever reason. A level-headed member of the
team, Oracle is often seen leading "Away" missions from a Mothership of some sort- she was
frequently seen leading strategy meetings during the Hickman Avengers- Infinity Mega-Arc.
At least five of the seven-thousand issues that made up that storyline featured her in some
kind of role.

-And yes, she really once shared a name with Lord Grantham's youngest daughter.

-A character who only showed up in a single mini, Orator was an old-looking green man with
emotion-controlling & detecting powers, attempting to seek out Magneto, and failed in
turning Joseph (Magneto's clone) into their new messiah. So he's got nothing going for him
other than his power. Not too impressive a character, given that they didn't even show him
after the mini, which he didn't even DIE in. They just forgot he ever existed- no Sentinel
Massacre, no Necrosha, no nothing. What a loser.

-Standard Emotion Controller, but a weak physical fighter, among the worst of all the
Acolytes. And that is SAYING SOMETHING with this crew.

Complications:
Prejudice (Horribly Disfigured)- Drake Shannon badly injured his face after crashing his
motorcycle in a race with Crash Simpson. He is horrifying to look at, and must constantly
wear a mask or provoke terrible reactions in other people, most of whom will turn away in
disgust.

Total: Abilities: 58 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 6 / Powers: 24 / Defenses: 6 (106)

-The Orb is a guy I'm familiar with because he appeared in a comic book reprint I own of his
Marvel Team-Up debut- he's the old partner of Johnny Blaze's mentor (Crash Simpson), who
lost the rights to the motorcycle stunt show Blaze now owned after losing a motorcycle race.
Swerving to injure Simpson, Drake Shannon then accidentally crashed himself, but skidded
for 25 feet RIGHT ON HIS FACE. His scars were GORY, and fascinated me as a young kid-
you just didn't SEE faces like that in comic books at the time! His outfit is part-goofy/part-
iconically awesome, so I'm of course a huge fan of it- love the giant eyeball head-thing. He
threatened Ghost Rider a couple times (always having some vague link to a vague group
called They Who Wield Power- no idea why these powerful guys would want to screw with
GHOST RIDER of all people), but was killed by one of Plantman's simuloids in a Hawkeye
story (but he later appeared in the background of a Deadline story in The Bar With No Name,
and was confirmed as alive by the writer- however, this appears to have been Retconned into
having been the first appearance of the second Orb). Naturally, like 8-Ball, his iconic
appearance means he's perfect for those "shows up in group shots" scenes.
-The Orb is a simple Bike Show Stuntman with EEEEEEVIL intentions, giving him a
Hypnosis power and a basic Energy Blast. He's got that plus some Missiles coming from his
fingers, though he's not terribly effective (Johnny Blaze wasn't that tough in the 1970s). But
he's kind of unique- though I think there was some Indie Comics character who looked JUST
LIKE HIM who came before.

Equipment:

Repulsor Ray +7 (+7 Ranged Damage, DC 22)

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +8 (DC 18), Toughness +3, Fortitude +4, Will +2

Complications:
Prejudice (Eye for a Face)- The second Orb literally has a giant eyeball for a head.
Quirk (Chatty)- The second Orb talks CONSTANTLY, much to the consternation of his
allies.

Total: Abilities: 38 / Skills: 8--4 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 2 / Defenses: 11 (62)

-The second Orb is more of an annoying one-note Joke than a real character, with no given
origin beyond "Mercenary Super-Villain". He was apparently BORN with his head looking
like that, and was nearly killed (a nail through the eye/head), but turned up alive later on to
annoy his teammates and Ghost Rider. He wasn't very good with his gun (he talked about
being good with it, but never actually hit anybody), and didn't show much of anything- I'm
even guessing about his improved eyesight (it seems to make sense, given his concept).
Another Orb was seen later with a group of henchmen, talking about rolling around in eyes,
and he was somehow able to "see" the identities/quirks of the Red Hulk & She-Hulk
(probably some sort of Mind-Reading/Penetrates Concealment thing).

-And in fact, he reappears during Original Sin- it started strong and with some fun stuff (hell,
it features THE ORB as a recurring character), but later turned into an awful piece of crap. It
spent way too much time on the stupid "Nick Fury secretly saves the world from Alien
Invaders... by hiding out on asteroids and shooting individual people with a Sniper Rifle".
He's treated like a completely-wimpy, whiny joke the entire time, but thanks to his Eye-
Themed powers, actually ends up with the eye of Uatu the Watcher imbedded in his freakin'
chest, giving him unknown extra powers.

Defenses:
Dodge +10 (DC 20), Parry +10 (DC 20), Toughness +8 (+11 Armour), Fortitude +9, Will +5

Complications:
Responsibility (The Breakworld)- Ord is a loyalist to Powerlord Krunn. He will treat threats
to his world quite seriously.
Responsibility (Temper)- The Breakworld is a society of warriors who know nothing but
loyalty and violence. Ord tends to react with his fists.

Total: Abilities: 72 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 21 / Powers: 44 / Defenses: 12 (163)

-Ord ("From Breakworld") was a big-name villain in Joss Whedon's first Astonishing X-Men
arc, and he even got to house the ENTIRE X-Men roster in a single round of combat,
reflecting Cyke's Optic Blasts, slashing Wolverine and KOing the others. Of course,
immediately after that, he got the "post-debut" de-push which involved him losing to the
team again, then getting beat a few more times over the next issues (good ol' New Villain
Stink), and finally, a semi-heroic death saving The Breakworld at the end of Whedon's run.
Kind of a serious loss of "Bad-ass" appeal, as Joss got more and more into having him
grumble about how bad stuff kept happening (making a bad-ass appearance at the X-
Mansion... when the team isn't home and it's just the students; getting magnetically stuck to
the ceiling and then the floor in a S.W.O.R.D. ship; "Is that Dragon thing behind me again?"
followed immediately by Colossus beating the ever-loving piss out of him) and his
unfortunate lot in life. The Breakworld has since appeared once more, with the refugees of
the now-more-peaceful society dealing with what happens when your dictator is dethroned
("I do not wish for more of Krunn's cruelty, but at least there was ORDER."). But hey- he
was a fun character while he lasted.

-I hemmed and hawed over making Ord a full-on PL 11, considering he only Pwnd the team
once, but hey, it was a hell of a job, and he was still a threat afterwards. With his armor, Ord
can shrug off Cyclops' Optic Blasts, and his cutting blades can hurt Colossus noticeably. He
loses badly once the entire team gets going, but hey- half of them are PL 11 professional
superheroes themselves (the only non-PL 11s on the Astonishing squad are Kitty & Beast).
So Ord is tough as hell, can deflect & reflect energy blasts very quickly, can fight multiple
people at once, and is generally a beast in combat. He's a little light on the brain power
(Agent Brand called him "the dumbest alien I've ever met"), but he doesn't need it.

K&O

Post by Jabroniville » Tue Dec 07, 2021 6:37 am

K & O (Kaos & Order)
Created By: Fabian Nicieza & Mark Bagley
First Appearance: Heroes Reborn: Young Allies (Jan. 2000)
Role: Cosmic Being

-K & O are a pair of cosmic beings who claim to be embodiments of Chaos & Order in the
Heroes Reborn universe. "Kaos" is an ebon, frenetically-tentacled male and "Order" is a
glowing green female. They were tasked with determining whether or not the HR-verse was
salvageable or needed to be destroyed, but joined the Young Allies even though they hadn't
rendered their judgement yet- through their inexperience, they accidentally destroyed Paris,
France when they manifested on this Counter-Earth. They later said they were trying to
prevent an anomaly from devouring Counter-Earth, and the destruction of Paris was
deliberate- a "temporary cork" keeping an anomaly at bay. The people of Paris had been
reanimated as ghosts- Mach-3 of the Thunderbolts chose to end their suffering and help their
spirits move on, but this unwittingly released said anomaly, which empowered a young man.
As "Anomaly", he defeated K & O, but was later beaten by the Thunderbolts and re-leased
into a breach.
-Later, in Exiles, K & O were convinced by Proteus (in Morph's body) to render a negative
judgement against Counter-Earth, but the Exiles & Young Allies teamed up to save it.

The Order

Post by Jabroniville » Sun Sep 03, 2017 5:24 am

THE ORDER:
-The Order is the Initiative team of California- it was initially going to be called The
Champions, but Heroic Publishing owns the rights to the name, so it got switched. The
Order's less generic anyways, so I approve. I've pretty much NEVER heard of it or any of the
members, but it sprung out of Civil War and was mostly a series of flashback-driven stories
of the characters. Matt Fraction ended it around issue #10 rather than let it turn into
something else (I think that's Writer Code for "Marvel was going to force me to make
changes to increase sales, and I killed it instead"), and Fraction did the usual comic book
writer trick of including the characters in various other stories he'd written (mostly in Iron
Man).

The core concept is that some charity-focused celebrities are given superpowers based off of
Greek Gods that will last for one year, as part of a P.R. movement for The Initiative program.
After getting caught drinking after a fight, the team is fired and replaced with newbies. They
do some stuff, fight some guys (zombie hobos!), and then their powers are made permanent.

The initial "fired" group are mostly one-shots with no real statistical leanings:

MAUL (Jamal Peoples): Energy Mallet, Flight, Ability to Reduce Problems to Their
Component Parts (???).
HEAVY (Dennis Michael Murray): Flying Brick. A crippled soldier given powers by Stark
and who trained much of the later team, he died when Ezekiel Stane removed his powers.

PIERCE (Pamela Pierce): Olympic-level Archer with enhanced Agility.

CORONA (Carlos Araujo Carvalho): Living conduit of the Sun- controls it via an exo-suit.
He gets fired, then murdered.

BrownGreen
BANNERMAN BROWN & BANNERMAN GREEN: Two Stark Enterprises Androids
that get destroyed.

APHRODITE: A former supermodel.

HERCULES: Super strength and the ability to fly
AVONA (Avery Allen): A Swordswoman with a sword that had A.I. She was fired, then
murdered.

Origin

Post by Jabroniville » Fri May 10, 2019 8:51 pm

ORIGIN
Created By: Mark Gruenwald & Greg Capullo
First Appearance: Quasar #18 (1991)

-Origin is kind of impossible to stat, being more of a Conceptual Being. It lived on Earth for
years, fighting a being called "The Unbeing". Origin was alleged to be the reason why there
were so many super-powered beings on Earth- she was even happy to create more Mutants,
as this was "easy to explain" and didn't require a complex origin story! This is, naturally, very
metaphysical and "how comics works" from Mark Gruenwald, who loved this kind of stuff.
Origin eventually died and was reborn, and Quasar had to be a midwife of sorts, helping birth
it with the three-breasted Elder of the Universe known as The Caregiver.

Fortitude +11 (+14 When Soaked), Will +3

Complications:
Enemy (Namor)- Orka is a recurring threat to Namor, and the two have fought dozens of
times.
Weakness (Out of Water)- Like Namor, Orka grows weaker the longer he is without water.
Prejudice (Inhuman Monster)- Arliss tends to look differently at times, but rarely looks
totally human. He's pretty much stuck doing what he does.

Total: Abilities: 32 / Skills: 26--13 / Advantages: 13 / Powers: 67 / Defenses: 16 (141)

-Orka is a Namor villain. That pretty much tells you all you need to know about him- he's an
underwater-themed guy who isn't that great, and tends to get jobbed out a lot, because
undersea-based characters never have long-running books enough to make villains with
actual name value. Like Tiger Shark, Orka is pretty much Namor's own personal jobber, and
again, like Tiger Shark, he undergoes massive transformations between books, as the latest
writer forgets what the last writer did with him. So he's been a big guy, a REALLY huge guy,
a guy even dumber than normal, and gone back and forth more than a few times over the
years, because he's simply not important enough to do research on, and most writers default
to there "familiar" version of him. And to make matters worse, he recently died, being killed
by a DOOMBOT of all things, while emoting his love for Misty Knight in Heroes For Hire.
He didn't even get a big "Hood's Crew" push going for himself! I had to read Wikipedia &
talk to Kreuz (the last time I built him, anyways) to even find out he'd died! Poor jobber
villain.

-So Orka was a generic Atlantean soldier working for Warlord Krang, and helps him in an
attempt to usurp the throne from Namor. Orka thus goes into exile with his boss, and then
gets genetically engineered by Dr. Dorcas (who also created Tiger Shark's mutations),
becomes a massively powerful being with the power of a killer whale (which... is nowhere
near as strong as Namor, but okay). However, he immediately gets into a skirmish with Tiger
Shark, and both are buried by an avalanche for months (what do they EAT?).
-Orka later escapes, jobbing to Namor twice, then gets mutated further by the Brand
Corporation- he becomes twenty feet tall, and loses the belt that once gave him his powers.
He fights the Avengers, but Thor knocks him out. Orka later joins Attuma's army when the
villain takes over Atlantis, and at this point, he's officially just a "Super-Powered Mook"- he's
beaten by She-Hulk and the Black Panther during an invasion of New York. He joins the
Deep Six in The Defenders, but is beaten again. He's quiet for most of the '90s (he's barely in
my Avengers- The Crossing Line story arc), but appears semi-frequently as a "Recognizable
Background Face" in various group scenes in 2000s titles. He joins Misty Knight's Heroes
For Hire and falls in love with the heroine, but is killed by a Doombot reprogrammed by the
Headmen. He appears in the afterlife twice in The Incredible Hercules, gambling for
resurrection and on a jury of Pluto's. However, he turns up alive (with NO REASON GIVEN-
the writer probably just forgot) in another book, and later shows up on Namor's Defenders of
the Deep... again as a recognizable background face who says nothing.

-"Recognizable Background Face Who Says Nothing" has actually become Orka's entire
character these days- he's not a challenge for Namor, he's probably not as strong as he used to
be, and he basically never even SPEAKS. He's just some guy who's strong and has that funny
suit with the "teeth around the face".

-Orka's PL 9.5 offensively outside of water, PL 11 while within it- he brawls with PL 12-13
Namor enough, but most of his appearances are him jobbing badly. An Avengers issue I have
features Vostok (of the People's Protectorate) & Vision easily defeating him, so he's got
weaknesses. If he gets into the water, he's roughly equivalent to a more under-Advantaged
version of The Thing, but outside of it he's just a bit of a pain, enough to challenge a team of
heroes for a bit, but he's not really better one-on-one that anybody who's that good. He's
tough, but not moreso than any other Brick, and he's REALLY dumb and easily-led-
attacking his Will Save is an almost surefire victory for the good guys. He can also control
Whales (usually Killer Whales, obviously) at a distance, which I don't think shows up that
often. He's one of those guys who's had a zillion upgrades and versions, so this is the more
common 18-foot-tall version. Others have been bigger, more bestial, etc.

First Appearance: Strange Tales #126 (Nov. 1964)
Role: Clea's Baby Daddy
Group Affiliations: The Dark Dimension

-Orini is a barely-seen, little-occurring character who is Clea's father- he was created by Stan
& Steve, but given real form by Steve Englehart. He was a Prince of the Dark Dimension,
and handsome enough that Umar decided to lose her virginity to him- she found this
"Disgusting" but gave birth to Clea, which prevented her from taking Faltinean form, creating
conflict with her brother Dormammu. Orini himself became one of Dormammu's chief
disciples, making Clea a "Princess" of sorts. He only shows up a couple of times in the mid-
1960s (as a generic backgrounder, more or less), and it's eleven years later that Englehart uses
him a bit more. He rebukes Clea when she finally turns on Umar once and for all, and
vanishes for years- it's not until 1985 that we get the full story on what went down between
him & Umar- before, he was just some loyal henchman.

-Finally, Clea switches appearances with her father and tricks Umar into imprisoning him-
neither she nor Dormammu bother to fix this. Finally, in 1995, writer David Quinn (?) writes
via flashback that Orini was finally revived, but when he begged to join up with Dormammu
again, the Dread One was like "LOL, no" and kills him. So, uh, very odd side-character. Like,
I guess he was just a high-end henchman and they didn't want to make Dormammu Clea's dad
or something (even though that would have probably made for a more dramatic story), but
then he just gets ignored for a decade on two separate occasions, and is then casually-
murdered.

-Orini is said to be a weak, ineffectual mage, and has only been seen casting bolts of magical
energy.

-Oriole is the newest member of Air Force, joining after Killer Shrike quit. He debuts in
Night Thrasher, being easily sneak-attacked by an unarmored Night Thrasher, who disables
him by smacking the power unit on the back of his armor ("It's the same place it is on mine",
Thrash notes, pointing out the vulnerability). His gear is combined with Tanager's to create
an override on the armor for all of the Air Force. In the subsequent issue, Oriole and Tanager
are killed by the paramilitary Soldiers of Misfortune. In this New Warriors issue, Oriole is
notably miscolored to look like Killer Shrike instead.

-Oriole is slightly more professional than his teammates (Cardinal spends most of the time
talking about the rush of killing people or whatever), but is still a total jobber.

-Orphan-Maker is Nanny's minion, and is actually PL 11, owing to a highly-durable

Armoured Suit that renders him invulnerable to many attacks. Intellectually, he is still a child,
but he's shrugged off Cyclops' Optic Beam like it was nothing in the past, and has some nasty
powers that can mess with heroes' powers and defenses, so watch out.

Defenses:
Dodge +14 (DC 24), Parry +16 (DC 26), Toughness +4, Fortitude +7, Will +8

Complications:
Power Loss (The Iron Fist)- While Orson is not Fatigued or Exhausted if he uses the Iron Fist
Technique, he still cannot simply spam the attack out willy-nilly. His Chi is a terrible
weapon, and could consume him with over-use. He can use it multiple times in succession,
but it's not a "use every time" kind of attack- he will eventually get Fatigued or Exhausted,
suffer incredible internal damage, or lose the attack entirely.
Responsibility (Shell-Shock)- Orson fought for the Americans in World War I, and was
utterly destroyed by the experience. Witnessing hundreds of men slaughtered, he resolved to
never engage in such horrors again.
Addiction (Opiates)- Orson has been "Chasing the Dragon" for decades to dull his senses
from his memories, and to dull his chi against those who would sense it and hunt him down.
Relationship (The Confederates of the Curious)- Orson was devoted to his friends in the
Confederates, and engaged in many amazing adventures for years with them. One has written
his entire autobiography, a selection of reading that holds great interest to Danny Rand.
Relationship (Phineas Randall)- Orson's father invented The Randall Machine, a device
capable of sending the user to K'un-Lun and back. Orson & his old man were not close, but
came to terms with each other over the elder's deathbed.
Relationship (Wendell Rand)- Orson kept the young kid on as one of his Confederates, but
always tried to dissuade him from following in his footsteps as The Immortal Iron Fist. He
believed Wendell would die trying, and he didn't want that kind of a violent path for a boy he
thought of as his son.
Responsibility (K'un-Lun)- Orson was meant to be the weapon & defender of K'un-Lun, but
rejected its hedonistic leadership.
Enemy (The Lightning Lords of Nepal)- Orson's assassination was ordered by The Bride of
Nine Spiders, who charged the Lightning Lords with killing him. Failing and dying, their
heirs continually hunt Orson and anyone else bearing the mantle of "The Immortal Iron Fist".
Enemy (The Immortal Weapons)- Orson ran from his "duty" in the Tournament years ago,
and was hunted by the Immortal Weapons of the Seven Capital Cities of Heaven, in order to
protect the corrupt leadership of each city. After murdering The Crane Champion, he is
especially hated by Crane Mother, who has resurrected the Steel Phoenix to replace her fallen
daughter.

Total: Abilities: 72 / Skills: 94--47 / Advantages: 48 / Powers: 25 / Defenses: 21 (213)

-Orson Randall came into the series like a hurricane, and proved that ANY retcon can be a
good one if the writing is good enough (Ed Brubaker would prove this YET AGAIN by
resurrecting Bucky Barnes)- he is the Iron Fist prior to Danny Rand, and survived the ages
thanks to his Chi, and dulled it using opium after having a lifetime of adventures with a pulp
hero-esque squad of Confederates. Returning to aid the new Iron Fist (Danny), he uncovered
all of the lies and secret history of K'un-Lun, and how there are other Immortal Weapons, and
than Nu-An, the current ruler, is a corrupt and vile man. He taught Danny a lot, but alas, they
only had a few issues together, as Orson went the way of many Obi-Wans before him, and
died fighting Davos, the resurrected villain now known as The Steel Phoenix, here to settle an
old score Orson had with Crane Mother.

-It says something that a guy with a run THIS SHORT (only a handful of issues) left such a
mark (especially considering how fan-ficcy the whole "I am your predecessor, and I know all
of your techniques PLUS MORE because I'm so awesome" is), as Orson soon got dozens of
backstory pieces in the Iron Fist book- many adventures with The Confederates of the
Curious, taking on a very pulp-y tone of mystical/street-level adventure, appear in his
Journals. And then he bequeathed to Danny The Book of the Iron Fist gave Danny a huge
bunch of stuff to learn. Here, Danny would real the tales of the other Immortal Iron Fists, the
adventures of Orson Randall and his team, and many of the mystical secrets of K'un-Lun and
other realms. Alas, with the series' cancellation, we appear to have seen the last of him, but he
was a hell of a character- taking part in a usually-untold portion of Marvel History (the World
War I/Pre-WW II era) and using the almighty power of GUN-FU, transferring his Chi into his
personal firearms.

-As a fighter, Orson is extremely elite, being a bit slower than Danny (he comes across as less
lithe and agile, and more of a hardcore brawler and Blaster), and also possesses a few more
mystical Chi Techniques. The most awesome of these is surely his ability to use the power of
Shou-Lao the Undying to channel chi into his paired pistols, using them as SUPER-Blasters,
mowing down HYDRA mooks all over the place. He can also use low-level Hypnosis
(Perception Range, but he has to be pretty close to someone to use it), and is completely
Immune to Aging (a power he can bestow upon others close to him- the Confederates begin
dying soon after Orson himself moves on to the next life). He is also notably a LOT more
Skilled than Danny- having the abilities of a longtime adventurer, detective and soldier.

The Outcasts

Post by Jabroniville » Sat Jan 30, 2021 1:22 am

THE OUTCASTS:
Created By: Mark Gruenwald & Herb Trimpe
First Appearance: The Fantastic Four Annual #13 (1978)

-The Outcasts are a foursome of ugly, deformed people who live in Subterranea, under the
Mole Man's rule. Outcast from human society and being sensitive to light, they appear on the
surface as hooded agents of their ruler. He gave some of them powers somehow, and they all
appeared in Rom, tyring to help the people of a small town fight the Dire Wraiths. Rom,
Torpedo & Starshine all helped out (after the mandatory fight against the Outcasts until
everyone made good), but in the final battle, Starshine was killed saving Rom from one of the
few surviving Wraiths. They appeared in a couple more stories as minions of the Mole Man
before quietly disappearing- their last appearance was in 1991 (where they attempted to force
Kala to return to Subterranea, as they were under orders to not let her leave, even though she
was trying to find and rescue the Mole Man), and they've never been mentioned since.

since devoted his life to helping others.

Total: Abilities: 70 / Skills: 38--19 / Advantages: 14 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 9 (112)

-This goofy character I've never heard of is apparently England's answer to The Punisher,
created by British writers Abnett & Lanning, WAY back before they became iconic Marvel
writers (my friends mostly knew them from their Warhammer stuff). When The Kingpin
stretched his fingers over to England, this guy stood in the way, was Frank Castle &
Microchip's contact over there. He seems to have only had two appearances until the modern
era, where he's used in the new Contest of Champions series. Realizing that he was sick of
killing people, he used a wish in the finale of the book to resurrect all the people he'd slain,
then devoted his life to helping people instead of killing them.

-Outlaw is basically Punisher Lite, and is oddly tiny, given the bios online- 5'1" 108 lbs.?
He's barely larger than Kristin Chenoweth!

writing- she flirts with Deadpool and dated Agent X for a time.

Total: Abilities: 74 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 11 / Powers: 1 / Defenses: 9 (110)

Outlaw- Deadpool Side Character & Gail Simone "Pet Project":

-The second Outlaw (the first is an ancillary Punisher character) is a very "Gail Simone" kind
of character- a low-powered human female with an old-timey gimmick and a smart-assed
attitude. A side character in Gail's Deadpool run, she is a mutant with low-level super-
strength and healing. She was bullied as a child, called "Crazy Inez", but was taught not to
use her strength against them by her father- both are descended from the Wild West hero,
Lance "The Outlaw Kid" Temple.

-Inez grew up to be a mercenary, and engaged in a flirtatious relationship with rival merc
Deadpool. Then of course Gail started work on Agent X and OF COURSE she moved her
new character over there, trying to give her a spot. She was hired to teach Agent X to shoot
and they formed a relationship, but both were handily defeated and humiliated by the
Punisher when they were hired to steal his guns. Agent X planned on having her join him for
his "Agency X", but she broke his heart by moving back to Texas to care for her ailing father.
When her father died, she returned, but was enraged to find Agent X had since slept with his
secretary, and she nearly killed the villain Black Swan (who was attacking Agent X at the
time) for calling her the old "Crazy Inez" name. Ultimately, she & Agent X get back together,
and the secretary hooks up with the Taskmaster as Agent X ends... and she disappears,
because of course Gail moves to DC full-time.

Post-Agent X Outlaw:
-Outlaw actually retains her mutant powers after M-Day, and is one of the random
backgrounders of the "198", bunking with Magma & Skids, where they are minor characters
shown as part of the "Random Un-Used Mutants" making up much of the remaining powered
ones. Outlaw at least takes a bit of a leadership role when Johnny Dee attacks using mind
control. Later, Outlaw returns to Deadpool, where she and the secretary are kidnapped by T-
Ray, a madman who thinks he's the real Wade Wilson. So yes, the new writers remembered
her. Outlaw works for Agent X again (he's now been made obese via HYDRA's experiments
I guess?) and becomes a recurring Wade ally. She even sleeps with Wade after breaking up
with Agent X, realizing that he actually cared for her. Buuuuuuuuuuuut then new Deadpool
writers took over and she was forgotten about- she was one of many random backgrounders
on Utopia. But then WOULDN'T YA KNOW IT, Outlaw randomly appears in the short-lived
2018 Domino series by... are you sitting down for this?... GAIL SIMONE. Excuse me while I
pick my jaw up off the floor, lol. In any case, she joins the "Girl Posse" (along with
Diamondback) because of course with Simone writing a bunch of disparate female
characters, they would become lifelong friends seconds after meeting.

-Ultimately, Outlaw is just "One of THOSE Characters"- the vast assortment of short-lived or
little-used gimmick characters who have popped up like termites since the 1990s, as countless
superhero books hit the market with a variety of writers, most of whom invent a character or
two like this who show up, then either follow their "Daddy/Mommy" to new books, or get
forgotten/randomly used thereafter. Outlaw seems to have gone through a couple "Eras"- her
debut as a Deadpool rival/flirt, showing up in Gail's Agent X, then as a "Token Mutant
Backgrounder" who is free and doesn't have an overwhelming backstory. Then there's
another random bit where she's a Wade Girlfriend for however long. There must be a hundred
characters like this, all waiting for that "One Big Story" that never came.

Outlaw's Abilities:
-Outlaw is very typical of the mutant characters of the 1990s, despite being a 2002 creation-
"Vague Super-Physicality" is about all she gets. Like... she's super-strong but who knows
HOW much, as it's not really said. She can punch through brick walls and that's about it-
much of the Deadpool cast (even Wade himself) had this kind of "Yeah, maybe however
much is needed but not more than Spider-Man" kind of strength. She has been shot without
dying, but usually takes some bruising. Overall, she's a PL 7.5 sort of character- her bio
indicates no big wins at all, and a lot of jobbing to guys like the Punisher.

Defenses:

Complications:
Motivation (Greed)
Responsibility (Superhero Fanboy)- Overdrive is so excited to meet Spider-Man that he asked
for an autograph while Spidey was TRYING TO CAPTURE HIM. He even geeks out over
Luke Cage & Iron Fist beating him up.
Power Loss (Powers, Post-Boning)- After, um, "exerting himself", Overdrive cannot use his
powers for a certain period of time.

Total: Abilities: 32 / Skills: 26--13 / Advantages: 2 / Powers: 70 / Defenses: 9 (126)

-Overdrive is a new character with the strange ability to transform common vehicles into
souped-up versions of themselves (he once turned a limousine into the Spider-Mobile, for
example). He's a low-rent fighter and can't beat any REAL super-humans, and is a bit of a
fanboy, but he can make some pretty good getaways with that high a Vehicles skill (it's
unclear whether or not his weird power comes from his body or his costume as of yet). He is
easily-beaten by Spider-Man several times, effectively being proven a joke, but appears as a
recurring character in The Superior Foes of Spider-Man, where he is the most-minor and
least-focused-on character; more of a "Follower" type in a team of distinct personalities.

-Overdrive's even admitted that his only reason for being a super-villain was to pull a
"Hawkeye" and switch sides, becoming a super-hero and hopefully being recruited by the
Avengers. He sticks with Boomerang's squad of fools towards this purpose, and because he
has a huge crush on Janice "Beetle" Lincoln. Ultimately, he washes out and is the least-
important character in the thing, and hasn't been seen since Superior Foes ended.
-Overdrive has the ability to transform Vehicles into "Souped-Up" versions of themselves.
He usually turns cars into more bad-ass, tricked-out cars that are faster, but he can ALSO
transform crazy things into weapons- in SFOSM, he touches a REMOTE-CONTROLLED
HELICOPTER and transforms it into a very real, Missile-Firing Death-Copter! This is
basically a high-end Transform/Variable that goes off at the same time, and can make him PL
10 with the right gear. Usually, though, he's an easily-beaten wuss.

Total: Abilities: 92 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 8 / Powers: 65 / Defenses: 8 (182)

-"The Stark" were an enemy found in the early issues of Jim Valentino's Guardians of the
Galaxy series in the early '90s- the idea being that they are the end result of an alien race
finding a huge cache of Tony Stark's weapons technology. The Stark adopted Tony as their
personal "Cargo Cult"-style God (so... they're Marvel's Advertising Department?), and began
worshipping the weapons he sent over, turning themselves into a cybernetic race. Depleting
their homeworld of resources, they became a conquering army. And of course named one of
their agents TASERFACE.

-Taserface was one of their advance agents (the others appear without stats basically
everywhere I can find them), and the exception to the rule of the matriarchal species. Upon
losing to the Guardians, he dropped one of the worst names in comic book history, adopting
the cool, but generic, "Overkill" as his nom-de-guerre- his Queen allowed him to improve his
form by cybernetic means. In this format, he fights and nearly takes out FIRELORD of all
people, but in a later battle, he commits suicide with a Self-Destruct device once he finds
himself losing to Hollywood (an aged, more-powerful Simon "Wonder Man" Williams)-
Williams survives.

-The guy's pretty hopelessly '90s, featuring hideous colours, metallic bits, spikes and assorted
weaponry. Jim Valentino's Guardians series is well-liked, but WOW. And, of course, now he
is MUCH more famous, having appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, featuring a ton
of cracks about his stupid, ridiculous name. The Guardians give him a mountain of shit over
it, and even the stoic, humorless golden-skinned Space Queen chick (Her/Ayesha in a
different form) cracked up and snickered when he was all "I am TASERFACE!". His final
moments, before the ship is destroyed in a self-destruct and he dies in flames, is listening to a
humorless women laugh at his stupid name.

-At his "Taserface" level, the guy was probably about PL 9-10- able to fend off the Guardians
of the Galaxy (mostly PL 9s) for a bit, but ultimately be driven back. As Overkill, he
manages to defeat FIRELORD in open combat! This could put him anywhere from PL 12 to
PL 15, but with some "New Villain Stink" and the fact that Firelord isn't QUITE as powerful
as The Silver Surfer, I went a bit lower. I mean, look at this guy- my personal bias against his
goofy-ass '90s appearance ALONE would prevent him from hitting PL 13 . And his history
kind of matches up with this, as he later fights Hollywood and is eventually beaten handily
enough that he blows himself up. A powerful Energy Blast and the ability to Nullify the
Energy Powers of anyone he fights can make him pretty dangerous, even to a Herald of
Galactus.

Total: Abilities: 32 / Skills: 10--5 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 13 (60)

-The ape-jawed, hulking, goofy-ass Overkiller is a Punisher knock-off from Slapstick's first
issue. Enraged over the X-Men's deaths in Dallas pre-empting the end of an episode of Wheel
of Fortune, he engaged in a one-man-war on Mutantkind, tracking one to a mall using a
mutant detector. Finding Slapstick there terrorizing some children, he mistakenly assumed
that the pliable hero was the mutant, and the two engaged in a destructive battle across the
entire mall. Despite Slapstick's insistence that he was not the mutant, when he kissed
Overkiller on the nose (in a real "Bugs Bunny" moment), the villain was so worried over
"Mutant Cooties" that he became distracted trying to wipe them off, and was easily knocked
out. He has never reappeared.

abilities also weaken considerably if he gets very stressed.

Total: Abilities: 70 / Skills: 42--21 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 152 / Defenses: 16 (269)

-The Overmind is a classic uninventive Marvel Villain design, as it's drawn by the usually-
awesome John Buscema ("The da Vinci of Marvel Comics"), yet looks pretty much like a
Jack Kirby bargain-basement retread. This is a direct result of Jack leaving the Fantastic Four
book only a short while beforehand, and proving just how important he was to that book, as
all the energy and life was drawn out of it. Overmind... controls minds. That's about it. He
takes over people and tries to create more interstellar wars, since all his own race died out and
implanted themselves into his brain. He disappeared for a while before showing up in The
Defenders, where the team broke his control over the Squadron Supreme's Earth (the
aftermath of which led to Gruenwald's series). A group of seven Earth telepaths took him
over and he was a Defender for a short while, but came back. An older Overmind joined the
death toll in Death of a Universe, but his current self is still around, being a boring, D-League
villain who no overall purpose. Yeah, Overmind kinda sucks.

-Standard Eternal stuff, plus an Omega-Level Mind Controller. He can easily take over the
entire FF at once, and his control is CONTINUOUS, meaning it's virtually impossible to
break. Yeah, he once controlled THOUSANDS of people at once, simply taking over a new
person every time he met them on the Squadron Earth, and they STAYED controlled until
physically broken out of it.

Complications:
Responsibility (The Ovoids)

Total: Abilities: 32 / Skills: 16--8 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 12 / Defenses: 13 (70)

-The Ovoids are a goof-looking race of "Big Head Guys" going all the way back to FF #10,
where they rescued newbie villain Doctor Doom while he was floating around in space. The
peaceful scientists were then convinced to teach him their great secret- transfering their
minds into new bodies! Great going, guys. They were rarely-seen after that (seemingly just an
excuse to explain why Doom returned to Earth from certain death), but were part of the
backstory of the Heralds of Galactus- when Air-Walker set down on their homeworld, they
successfully KILLED him! An Ovoid was later seen as part of a group imprisoned on another
planet- he trained She-Hulk in their mind transfer power, but she screwed up and she & her
friend Weezie switched PHYSIQUES instead of minds! He later helped Reed Richards figure
out how to reverse the situation- Weezie had to WANT to give up her new physique.

-Another Ovoid namied Insidio was a member of Skeletron's Starblasters, but he betrayed
them for more power. Another was seen during Maximum Security, as part of the
Intergalactic Council that made Earth a prison for monsters across the galaxy. A few have
since been shown on these types of "advisory committees", but the race as a whole has never
factored into any major story. It seems that they're strong enough to defend themselves (being
one of the only things in the universe to kill a HERALD OF GALACTUS, mind you- that's
cred even the Shi'ar don't have), but don't have a colonial mindset, which is good for the rest
of space.

The Owl

Complications:
Motivation (Greed)

Reputation (Unhinged Lunatic)- The Owl is pretty normal most of the time, but willingly
turned himself into a big owl-monster, and is known to eat live mice with 600-year old wine.
Rivalry (Other Crimebosses)- The Owl is either the ally or enemy of people like Wilson Fisk,
Hammerhead and Silvermane.

Total: Abilities: 84 / Skills: 66--33 / Advantages: 8 / Powers: 11 / Defenses: 11 (147)

The Owl- Silver Age Goof to Crime-Boss:

-The Owl is an interesting situation where a complete garbage 1960s throwaway villain can
be utterly revamped into an entirely new thing, thus rescuing an old concept... but I still kinda
think he sucks. I mean, he's just Kingpin Lite in the same universe as The Kingpin! Just use
the Kingpin!

-So The Owl debuts as the THIRD villain Daredevil fights, and is pretty goofy- just a sign
that Stan was not putting his best into this book (to be fair, he was writing ALL OF THEM,
pretty much). He was a successful financier, "The Owl of Wall Street", but was exposed as a
tax evader and crooked business man- he then took up shop as a crimelord. And he got rich to
the point where he literally invested in a serum that could give him flight powers (holy shit!
Why not SELL THAT?!?). He captured Daredevil and planned to execute him in front of the
other crime bosses to prove himself, but DD escaped and the Owl fled, where he was
ignominiously captured by police. He quickly returned, trying to punish those who'd
imprisoned him last time, but he & DD fought to a draw. He disappeared until the '70s, where
Mister Kline broke him out of prison and hired him to kill DD- he nearly succeeded, but the
Black Widow entered the series and helped the hero win. Next, he fought The Cat (the future
Tigra) during a scheme to drain human brains of knowledge, then he was back to DD. He
temporarily lost the use of his legs, then needed a pacemaker for his heart. He opposed
Doctor Octopus as an upstart crimelord and lost in the pages of Spider-Man. In a weird Alpha
Flight story, he and other animal-themed villains (Asp, Scorpion and... Nekra? Well kinda
maybe a bat? I dunno) were summoned to Winnipeg by a sorcerer and were beaten by Alpha
& Gamma Flights.

-Fun story: When X-Factor debuted in the early 1980s, the initial plan of the villain behind
everything was going to be THE OWL, revamped and taken seriously, since he wasn't being
used in Daredevil anymore. But Bob Layton was told "No" and he had to create another guy
instead- a total newbie you might have heard of named "Apocalypse". Yeah, THIS guy as
Apocalypse... think about how different the X-Books might've been.

The Owl Gets Revamped:

-So in short, The Owl was now a glorified Journeyman Villain, and a wannabe crimeboss.
However, he slowly grew more mutated with time, and more sinister- he would often go to
jail, but his attempts to take Wilson Fisk's place became more prominent as time went on.
Eventually, it was just kind of "Accepted" in the superhero community that he was the #2.
However, it was more like we were just TOLD that he was the big name, because in the
actual comics, he's getting badly beaten by Daredevil for taunting the hero over Foggy
Nelson's death (it was faked but DD didn't know that), shot by the Hood for not asking
"permission" to do something, etc. He's just "part of the crimelords" now, sometimes seen
with Fisk and the others, sometimes having mooks join the Goblin Nation or captured by
Taskmaster & Black Ant alongside all the animal-themed villains or whatever. At least he
was treated seriously in The Superior Foes of Spider-Man, as a fearsome guy working with
Boomerang to retrieve a painting of Doctor Doom with a single tear running down his face.

-In any case, he's pretty much just "the guy who isn't the Kingpin but does Kingpin-like
things"- a pretty strong example of "Mongul Syndrome" since he's obviously a worse
character in every way. Like, first of all, the Kingpin isn't a great character because he's
POWERFUL or a big crime boss, he's a great character because he's a GREAT
CHARACTER. Wilson Fisk has NUANCE. He believes there's an order to things- he's
greedy and will kill to get what he wants, but he's not just some low-rent madman. He doesn't
hide out in secret bases- he lives in a giant skyscraper in central Manhattan. He has
conversations between major superheroes as equals. He has a wife he adores (and
periodically would give up crime for) and a son he doted on but now wants him dead. He
came up from nothing and gets his hands dirty. He's even a study in contrasts- a big fat-
looking guy who is a giant bad-ass who can physically beat down even master martial artists
and hand-to-hand guys like Daredevil and Captain America. The Owl is just some deformed
dickhead who we're simply "told" is some smart, devious master criminal when even the
writers barely bother to pretend that's true.

The Owl's Abilities:

-Basically a really expensive, smart, streetwise PL 9, The Owl is essentially Kingpin-Lite in
almost every way, being just a notch below him in everything but raw power, and he's not
quite as good a fighter, preferring to do things behind-the-scenes. Nonetheless, he's not to be
trifled with, and is strong enough to put a major dent in Daredevil's activities, even though
he's a PL lower. And apparently he's not a mutant, despite some reports that he was. Not sure
why it matters.

Enemy (Spider-Man, Daredevil)

Total: Abilities: 22 / Skills: 22--11 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 2 / Defenses: 13 (55)

-Ox is your everyday big, dumb moron, and is one of those guys where it's tough to tell if he's
authentically super-strong, or just a really big dude. In the early days of Spidey, he was an
actual physical threat. He eventually fell ill and traded bodies with an evil scientist, who then
died in Ox's body, falling from a great height while fighting Daredevil. "Ox" attempted to
start a new life, but his new body mutated into an unstable duplicate of Ox's original one
while being experimented upon with radioactive isotopes, and succumbs to the effects-
exploding in a fight with DD.

-"Back To Basics Syndrome" reared its ugly head, as it turns out that Ox had a TWIN
BROTHER, Ronald Bloch, who of course is the same physically and joins The Enforcers in
Raymond's stead. It seems that many later writers just assumed that Ox was always the same
guy too, further complicating matters.

-As it stands, he's not a half-bad fighter, but he'd only challenge the early PL 7 Spidey in
hand-to-hand. Even with his partners, he'd fall against just about anybody, despite being very
tough (having Power Attack enough to hit +10 damage, though his opponent had better be
Stunned or Immobile for him to hit at +2 accuracy).

China Force

Post by Jabroniville » Sun Jan 08, 2017 12:43 am

CHINA FORCE:
-China Force debuted in an Alpha Flight comic as animal-powered metahumans, fighting
against some members of their team (they're based off of the twelve signs on the Chinese
Zodiac, which is the second time a comic book team has built a bunch of lame jobbers from
astrological signs) who had defected and sought sanctuary in Canada. They showed up again
in an X-Force Annual, fighting with the Mutant Liberation Front and 3-Peace (though it
turned out Reignfire leveraged the first battle- in which he killed Rabbit- against the Chinese
so that they would make his team a BETTER offer). They did pretty much nothing, almost
dying several times, and are pretty minor. But they're still Chinese "Heroes" (well, to the
Communist Party, sure).

-The members of the team we saw the most of (ie. two issues) are Rabbit, Snake, Rat & Ox,
three being Scrappers and the latter a Powerhouse. Monkey, Horse & Dog were depicted as
traitors, but apparently didn't do anything worth getting a write-up on ComicVine (Wikipedia
doesn't have ANYTHING on China Force whatsoever). There's no word on where Dragon,
Ram, Rooster, Tiger or Pig ended up, but it's implied most either defected or died. The sad
thing is, Zodiacs are a really cool "Mass Concept" type of team idea, similar to Playing Cards
(The Royal Flush Gang) or Chess Boards (The Hellfire Club, The Chessmen, Checkmate)- it
gives you a large group of readily-recognizable names, a unified concept (that in this case
even gives you ANIMALS upon which to base easy power-sets), and even maybe some
personality types to base stuff off of. I mean personally, I think Zodiacs & Horoscopes are
junk and are broad enough to justify about ANY personality trait, but still, it's an idea.
Unfortunately, for all the half-decent names you can create off of this (Dragon, Ox, Tiger),
you have ones that couldn't possibly be used by serious characters (Rooster- or worse- Cock,
and Pig). Just kind of a half-assed filler team created as a one-off thing.

-Snake is a low-level Elongation-type, with some natural weapons, Elongation (only 30 feet)
and some Senses (no evidence of them, but why not?). He's PL 7 overall, which is REALLY
low for a metahuman, but it fits- the team were enough to challenge the Mutant Liberation
Front members, but not really pose a severe threat. They've appeared so rarely that there's
simply not much to them, and they have no major wins to their name.

-Rat is more of a Claw-wielding Scrapper type, but has nasty Power-Inhibitors in her gloves
(that didn't see use against Feral, because the writer likely forgot them) that make her PL 8 in
just that one attack. Scarily, they ALSO create a nasty plague as well. The rest of her's still

Responsibility (The People's Republic of China)

Total: Abilities: 52 / Skills: 12--6 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 2 / Defenses: 8 (72)

-Ox is far more limited than his comrades, but is much stronger, making him a PL 8 overall.
He's cheaper thanks to his Strongman nature, but is still the hardest member of his team to
bring down by a considerable ways.

-Rabbit is small, but packs a mean wallop- her "Power Kick" attack has dropped
SASQUATCH of all people (though notably he came right back and beat both her and her
partner, Snake), so she's a PL 8 like Ox is. This didn't save her, though, as Reignfire flew in
and Blasted her to death with a single shot. She's decently high-defense (barring that one
notable instance, but he DID freeze her with a good Intimidation Check), but can't take a
punch.

Initiative +3

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +6 (DC 16), Toughness +2 (+3 Uniform), Fortitude +4, Will +4

Complications:
Guilt (Mutant)- Idie believes that her mutant powers are blasphemous, and considers herself a
monster. As such, she freely killed some Hellfire Club goons- if she's going to Hell anyways,
why not?

Total: Abilities: 26 / Skills: 14--7 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 37 / Defenses: 13 (90)

-Idie (pronounced "Ih-dyay") was the most "normal" of The Lights (Hope's team of newbie
mutants), and had the somewhat-rare ability of Temperature Control- allowing her both "Fire
Guy" and "Ice Guy" powers. This could have made her quite forgettable (like everyone on
her team who wasn't Hope Summers), but all of a sudden Jason Aaron made her one of the
key students in his Wolverine and the X-Men book, where she became the most important
student after Quentin Quire. She used to look like an adult woman more than a young teen,
but the later artists (Chris Bachalo & others) seem to draw her appropriately 14-ish. She's
from Delta State, Nigeria (reminds me of that weird show that used to be on "The Detour" on
Teletoon, with all the weirdly-animated noses), and is SUPER-religious, feeling incredibly
guilty about her "blasphemous" Mutant Powers. This effectively makes her a new-generation
Rahne Sinclair.

-She's also notable for the fact that, despite her appearing in every single issue of Wolverine
& The X-Men, all of which I've read, I didn't know what her super-power or codename were
until I looked them up. Aaron is good at many things (funny dialogue, pointing out how
weird super-worlds are, etc.), but exposition isn't really one of them- she pretty much never
fights, and is all about the talking and the plotting. So she's a more well-rounded
CHARACTER than most new X-Kids, but her stateline's a little harder to figure out
statistically. She's since appeared with the Original X-Men (who are STILL AROUND,
bizarrely enough) in their ongoing, but in a VERY minor role (ie. she never says or does
anything until the sixth or seventh issue). I'm not as down on modern comics as some (or
most, in fact), but they can be REALLY WEIRD for stuff like this.

-Idie has a neat power-set, but really just adds a Heat Blast to "Iceman Lite" at PL 7.5 levels-
most of the Lights ended up as PL 8s, but in W&TXM, she's almost never shown fighting- her
best showing is probably killing a bunch of Hellfire Club Mooks, which isn't a huge feat. She
has potential, but is still WAY too cheap on points for a real active super-hero.

One-Off Hulk Foes

Role: One-Off Threats
Group Affiliations: None
PL 8 (66)

Skills:

Offense:
Unarmed +4 (+12 Damage, DC 27)

Total: Abilities: 8 / Skills: 4--2 / Advantages: 0 / Powers: 50 / Defenses: 6 (66)

-The Hulk fights a LOT of guys like this- villains who come in, briefly gain Hulk-ish Strength, fight the
Green Goliath for a round or two, then lose. Really, it's the default "Lazy-Ass Hulk Story" most
writers fall back to. Rather than create multiple builds from Brothersale's list there, or just blow
them all off as "unimportant", it's time for my favorite way of getting multiple uninteresting
doofuses out of the way- TEMPLATE TIME!!!

AGENT PRATT- PL 8 (75): Regeneration 8 (Feats: Regrows Limbs) [9]

-Agent Pratt was a Special Agent who gained Hulk-like powers and an obese physique after taking
some of Banner's blood.

26 & 27- PL 8 (59): INT -3, PRE -3, Survival 4 (+4), Fearless, Improved Critical (Unarmed), Last Stand
(Ignores Damage for 1 Rd w/ HP Spent) [-7]
-A pair of gamma-irradiated wild boars.

DOCTOR HANS FELDSTADT- PL 8 (83): INT 5, Science 6 (+11), Technology 6 (+11), Inventor [17]
-A one-shot Scientist who was a specialist in the field of radiation. He was asked for help by Bruce
Banner, but acted like a douche about it. Ultimately, a machine he was working on exploded and
gave him temoprary super-powers, allowing him to fight the Hulk for a bit before he got beaten. He
was thought killed, but apparently survived. He's never reappeared.
IGOR DRENKOV- PL 8 (95): INT 2, AWA 2, PRE 3, Deception 4 (+7), Expertise (Spy) 6 (+9), Extra Limbs
10 [29]
-The very first enemy the Hulk ever faced, Igor Drenkov was a Soviet spy sent to mess with the initial
Gamma Bomb test that created the Hulk in the first place. He was thrown in jail in his first
appearance, and literally did not make an appearance for thirty years until the Pantheon brought
Hulk back into contact with him. Igor had by that point been driven insane by nightmares brought on
by what he'd done. He was later turned into a multi-tentacled gamma creature that killed a Crimson
Dynamo before being brought down by the Winter Guard, Russia's superhero team.

PATCHWORK (Kyle Barker)- PL 9 (41): ST & STA +1, All Powers Have Source: Gamma Radiation [-25]
-Patchwork appeared in the Doc Samson Limited Series- a messed-up kid who was traumatised when
his abusive grandmother caught him with some dirty magazines, his gamma-empowerment (from a
science experiment gone wrong) turned him into a killer of women, involving skinning them (Man,
what is it with serial killers and SKIN?). He was finally beaten when they drained him of radiation.
RANDALL JESSUP- PL 9 (80): INT 3, Expertise (Science) 4 (+7), ST & STA +2 (Source- Anger From
Others), Leaping +2 [14]
-During Marvel's big "Inhumans" push, it seemed like every book had to have a "Mandatory Inhuman
Appearance" to promote the new series. Jessup was on Bruce Banner's science team, and a member
of S.H.I.E.L.D.- he was transformed into a chaotic Hulk-like creature and went on the rampage. The
Hulk beat him by "overloading" him with rage, and was working on a cure for his condition.

SPINACH- PL 8 (80): INT 5, Science 6 (+11), Inventor [14]

-An entrepeneur/mad scientist who developed an inhaler to give him temporary super-strength. He
was beaten by the Hulk after attempting to advertise his product by fighting him.
TEEN ABOMINATION (Jamie Carlson)- PL 8 (66):
-A kid who was next to a gamma explosion when he was little, and grew into an Abomination-type
character in the Iron Man book during the "Extremis Armor" years. His initial transformation
rendered his mother comatose (he thought she was dead). He apparently had quite a bit less
strength, and was nowhere near as large, as Tony easily defeated him with a Uni-Beam and smacking
him with the Iron Man helmet.
Vista (Patricia Wolman)
-A scientist that developed V.I.S.T.A., a technology capable of giving plants artificial intelligence, after
losing her funding she chose to work for S.H.I.E.L.D. in Dr. Bruce Banner's lab crew after finding out
she had developed Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease. With her time running out she used her V.I.S.T.A.
technology to transfer her consciousness to plants grown from Derenik Zadian’s mutated plants, that
had been further mutated by exposure to the Hulk. The resulting gamma infused plant consumed
the city of Vancouver. She was defeated the Hulk who released a pesticide and seemingly killed her
while it liberated everyone under Vista's influence. However, a part of Vista managed to get to an
island in the South Pacific Ocean, which she took over.

Derenik Zadian
- Dr. Derenik Zadian was a scientist and a genius. He gave a lecture about scientific progress to a
young Tony Stark and Bruce Banner. Zadian was given an island in the Pacific Ocean by the US navy
as his personal laboratory. He used the US funding to make the island a functioning network and a
self-defensible environment. As he grew old coupled with contracting a degenerative disease, Zadian
interfaced with the island in order to survive having become one with his island. Decades later,
S.H.I.E.L.D. investigated mysterious shipwrecks leading to a conflict between him, Iron Man and the
Hulk, that ultimately destroyed his island and him.
