“Bethlehem Candle” as a reminder of Mary and Joseph’s journey to

Bethlehem.

Candle of Peace is a gift that we must be prepared for. God gives us the gift of

peace when we turn to Him in faith.

Advent —The prophet Isaiah called Christ “The Prince of Peace.” Through John

the Baptist and all the other prophets, God asks us to prepare our

hearts so that he may come in.

Peace from God, biblical peace, allows us to trust in God’s promises

through restful, tranquil faith, despite the dark, scary world around us.

Inner peace— begins with a relationship with God, and it continues as

we focus on His strength and allow Him to fill us. We can exchange our

weakness for His strength in any area of life.

"Let me start off by saying that I didn’t always know what peace is, and to be honest I still don’t have

a concrete idea. A younger version of myself would have said peace is a Saturday afternoon with no

chores and playing video games all day. Me 4 years ago would say peace is being on a beach

relaxing to the sound of the waves. The person answering this question today; however, is beginning

to understand that my version of what peace may look like for me will change with time. That person is

also beginning to understand what real peace is.

Peace to me now is an evolving concept that varies from person to person, depending on where they

are in life. To put a definition on it, peace is where ever

you see yourself truly content with what you’ve accomplished over a period of

time. When you hear someone say they’re ‘happy’ with something, they’re not

at peace with that thing. When someone is fully accepting of what is, the

way it is, after spending time and energy on making that thing the way they

want it, that is real peace." - Kadeem Vaughn

Set boundaries with your time!

You are not obligated to give your time limitlessly to

those around you.
Read your inner cues and know that it is okay to set
boundaries with others in order to protect your
emotional well-being.
Surround yourself with positivity and affirmations.

Set boundaries with your space!

Since you are doing online learning, it can be

Let's get to know... REV.

LIZBETH TULLOCH
When did you become a priest?
"I have ordained a Priest in 2016 (and a Deacon in 2014)."

How many years of service do you have?

"Seven years, as ordained Clergy. However, service has been a

significant part of my life, having had a mother who not only

instilled the spirit of service but was an excellent example. She

used to say, get out of yourself and go help other people.”

Why did you become a priest?

"I became a Priest because God called me, and that Call involves

a life of seeking to do God’s Will, and responding to that Will in

service to others. Through answering that Call, I became what

God has called me to be."

What are the current church(es) that you are responsible for?
"As Priest-in-Charge: St. Ann’s Parish in Belmopan and St. Agnes

Mission in Mahogany Heights. As Interim Priest: St. Andrew’s Parish

in San Ignacio, St. Barnabas Mission in Central Farm, and St.

Hilda’s Mission in Georgeville."

"What message/ advice do you have for young people?"

"Don’t settle for knowledge – seek wisdom; The true failures in life

are those we fail to learn from; You will often learn more from

when you fall short than when you succeed; If you want to be

faithful in big things, be faithful in the little ones."

What is a fun fact about yourself that you'd like people to know?
"I was also an ultramarathon runner. My longest distance was 40

miles. I am an animal lover – we have seven dogs and three cats

(I’d have more if we had the room!) I am also an artist."

Acolytes: God's Servers at the

Holy Altar
Who is an Acolyte?

An Acolyte is a youth or a person young at heart, who feels called to serve at God’s
holy altar, and who handles holy things, vessels and ornaments consecrated to
serve our one triune God. Throughout history this same God has called various
persons from all walks of life young, old rich or poor, to protect, preserve, and
prepare vessels for worship. An Acolyte joins in the ministry of the church by
assisting the Priest in making the worship experience and liturgy come alive as
they carry out their duties with holiness and dignity these include: carrying the Processional cross
leading the procession to the Lord’s table, carrying the torch which represents the light of Christ in a
dark world, being the gospel bearer by carrying and holding the book that contains the good news of
Christ love for the world, directing the Priest so he or she doesn’t make any mistake as master or
mistress of ceremony, and lastly being a thurifer by swinging the incense which represents the prayers
of the people of God (congregation) ascending to God in smoke.

Why does an Acolyte serve?

An Acolyte serves because:

they are inspired to be attendants at the Lord’s table.
it is an opportunity to learn more about the rituals of the church.
like Jesus, they see themselves among others as one who serves.
the work of Christ cannot be done by the Priest alone so it is our
responsibility to assist them.
a worship experience should flow smoothly, be done with dignity
and simplicity so that Jesus can be truly symbolized as the celebrant
of our Eucharist celebration like what he did at his last supper.

How can one become an Acolyte?

If a youth or older person feels called to serve God and their church as
Acolyte recruitment starts as early as 7 years old. This must be in
consultation with parents, or being a man or woman who is a
communicant member of a parish or mission, who live a Christian life
of uprightness and decency. This is followed by notifying the Priest so
that training can be scheduled. He or she must be baptized or plan to
get baptized in the near future.

Mr. Ismael Requena joined the staff of Anglican Cathedral College in 1992. At
the time of his employment, he was hired as a Science Teacher. Mr. Requena
was quickly recognized for his leadership capability and was appointed to serve
in various leadership capacities at the school, such as Head of Department and
Vice-Principal until he ultimately became Principal of our beloved institution
in 2004.

While in leadership, Mr. Requena made it his mission to improve the quality
of education given at ACC through various mediums.
Chief among his priorities were improving necessary infrastructure, encouraging the school’s involvement in
various competitions, promoting professional development for himself and other members of staff, providing
support to students and their parents to ensure that all students and their parents were able to adequately engage,
and implementing and enforcing policies that encouraged students to be productive members of society.

Though some found Mr Requena’s leadership style to be rigid at times, he led this institution with the best
interest of his students placed firmly at the forefront of his mind. We sincerely thank Mr Requena for his twenty-
nine years of dedication and commitment to ACC. We are sure that his impact on the lives of students, parents,
and teachers, along with other contributions will be felt for generations to come. We salute our beloved principal,
colleague and friend and wish him well on his retirement.

Oh, the joy of Christmas! The most wonderful time of the year, they say. And, in Belize, it is a festive time

of the year all around the country. Residence and businesses decorate their homes and buildings with

lights and decorations. The city streets are busy with shoppers and vendors. The sound of the Salvation

Army's bells rings through the air. All these things let us know that the season of Christmas is here.

There are different Christmas traditions; however, some traditions that we share are "universal." Take a

look at the list below and identify what applies to you and your family.

You MUST do a general Christmas Cleaning! Out with the Old and in with the new! (Or you can

just reuse. Nothing is wrong with that!)

Varnish/polish all the wooden furniture in the home.

Paint up the place! (That new paint smell and Christmas goes hand in hand in Belize!)

Shop new Christmas curtains from Mikado, Mirab or Brodies (that's if you don't get them in the

states Barrell)

Buy new linoleum/ Marley flooring.

Decorate your Christmas tree!

Buy your case of pint bottle soft drink or old fashion lemonade.

Play/sing "Good Mawnin Miss Lady" at least once during the holiday season!

Bake/buy black fruit cake and white cake!

Buy grapes, apples and pears!

Eat Christmas ham and turkey!

Drink eggnog (Rumpopo)

Traditional Cultural Practices at Christmas are as follows:

Jankunu Dance (Wanaragua)

These costumes are made to imitate the slave

masters. The dance became common during

Christmas time because it was the only time that

the families had free to come together and make

fun of their European slave masters.

Charikanari Dance (Hunter Man & Two Foot

Cow)
The dancers wear cow head attire with real horns

worn over a head wrap and a wire screen mask.

Like the Jankunu, dancers and drummers roam from

house to house entertaining the community with

antics. Boys and men dress as women while

wearing masks and dance. The "Two Foot Cow"

taunts children who tease him.

Maya Deer Dance

The Deer Dance tells the story of a maiden being kidnapped by

the jaguar who is then pursued by the hunter. While this is

happening, the two dogs will chase the deer as the joker makes

fun of everyone.

Krismus Bram (Caroling)

People make their way through the streets singing and playing

Brukdong music while dancing from house to house to spread

the good cheer.

Las Posadas
Nine-day tradition involves prayers, music, songs, dances and

food. It begins on December 16th and continues every day until

Christmas. The celebration begins when the Santos (saints –

normally statues of Mary and Joseph) are taken from the Church

through a procession of marimba music, candles and fire

displays leading to a preselected home.

"Christmas Day we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and I love to

hear the stories leading up to the birth of Jesus but, I like Christmas

because it’s a day where we spend time with our families and friends,

we put up Christmas tree and decorate it with colourful lights, we

open gifts, eat delicious turkey dinner, black and white cake and

listen to joyful Christmas songs." -Kalifah Jones

"What I like about Christmas is spending

time with my family."

-Somaya Faux

"Christmas is all about Jesus' birth and celebrating

Jesus' birthday. The things I like about Christmas is

the Christmas tree, Santa Claus and Christmas

gifts." -Trinity Ezeani

"I like Christmas because of all the gifts. And,

I like Christmas because of decorating the

Christmas tree." -Nadya Davis
