INSTRUCTIONS TO COMPLETE PROPOSAL TEMPLATES:

1. Templates are provided for each of the articles that are to be negotiated for this assignment.
2. The templates are to be completed after doing your research into your chosen article,
determining what changes are best to achieve your mandate, and reaching agreement with
your team as to what your bargaining strategy will be.
3. Select the template for the article that you have chosen, either Article 11 Vacation with Pay,
Article 12 Compensation, or Article 20 Sick Leave.
4. Each team member is to complete a separate proposal submission.

PART 1 Team Strategy


5. Each proposal is to include your Team Strategy to achieve your assigned mandate.
a. Insert your team strategy on the first page of your proposal content (after the cover
page below).
b. The strategy is to be created by the team after you have researched your chosen
articles.
c. It is to be no longer than 250 words.
d. The strategy is to include answers the following questions:
i. What is your mandate?
ii. How will your team achieve a negotiated outcome that meets or exceeds the
mandate provided by your instructor?
 Include how your team will balance or leverage each of the assigned
articles to meet the mandate?
iii. What strategies will you use to persuade the other party to accept your
position?
iv. Overall, what do you anticipate the other party to want in exchange for your
demands?

PART 2 Original Article and Initial Proposal


6. Leave the original version of your article in place.
7. Beneath the original article, in the space under “Initial Position: Article XX - XXX” show
your initial proposal with all the proposed changes.
a. Use strikethroughs to show text that has been deleted.
b. Use bolding & underlining to show text that has been added.

PART 3
8. Relying on course content describe the reason you are proposing the changes to your article –
what are you trying to achieve?
9. Then describe the changes you will likely make to your initial proposal in your Target and
Resistance points.
a. Just describe the changes you will likely make as you likely progress through
bargaining.
b. Using course content, explain why you are proposing the changes you are proposing.

10. Answer the following questions:
a. How do you expect the other team to react to each of your initial, target and
resistance points?
b. What do you expect they will offer as a counter proposal?
c. For each point how will you support/sell your proposal to the other side?
11. Part 3 should be no more than 500 words.

PART 2 Original Article and Initial Proposal


Original Article: Article 11 - Compensation (Note new hourly rates are updated from text)
1.01 The following hourly rates shall be effective during the term of this Agreement:

1.02 The Company will pay for parking tickets received by drivers in the course of their duties
for unavoidable parking infractions. It is agreed that the Company shall be the judge of whether
or not the infraction was unavoidable. In the event the Supervisor declines payment of a parking
ticket he will give reasons in writing if requested to do so by the employee.
1.03 Safety Shoes
The Company agrees to contribute the sum of one hundred and thirty-five dollars ($135.00) for
one pair of safety shoes per calendar year, upon production of a receipt of purchase, to
employees who are required by the Company or by the Company’s customer to wear CSA
approved safety shoes or boots.

1.04 The Company will endeavour to pay any error in pay resulting in underpayment of one
hundred dollars ($100.00) or more within twenty-four (24) hours of determination of the error
and any error in pay of less than one hundred dollars ($100.00) on the first paycheque following
the determination of the error, if practicable, and, if not, then on the following paycheque.
The Union agrees that any error in pay resulting in overpayment will be deducted from the first
paycheque following determination of the error, if practicable, and, if not, then in the following
paycheque.

PART 3 Justification
1. Describe the reason you are proposing the changes set out in the Initial proposal for your
article – what are you trying to achieve and why?
2. How do you expect the other team to respond to your initial proposal?
3. How will you support/sell your proposal to the other side?
4. Describe the changes you will likely make to your initial proposal to achieve your Target
proposal.
5. Describe the changes you will likely make to your proposal to ensure you do not exceed your
Resistance point.
6. How do you expect the other party to respond your anticipated changes and what strategies
will you use to gain their support for your proposals?
