1. Identify the purposes of, and the people and events honored in, commemorative holidays, including the human struggles that were the
basis for the events (e.g., Thanksgiving, Independence Day, Washington’s and Lincoln’s Birthdays, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day,
Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day).

Have students recall other leaders like MLK and ask them about what they know about other leaders and presidents.
Objective & Purpose
OBJECTIVE: Students will be learning about Washington and Lincoln. At the end of the unit lesson, you will remember facts about presidents
George Washington and Abraham Lincoln's birthdays by stating information.

Student Objective: Boy and girls today you will be learning about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

PURPOSE: The reason you need to know this is to understand leaders in our Country and the roles they played.
