Students will also be using several other standards not related to


Social Studies to complete these center activities. These could
be pulled from English and Math standards among others.
Lesson Objectives 1. Students will be able to identify the American Holiday,
President’s Day, and why it is celebrated.
2. Students will be able to name two facts that relate to the
president.
3. Students will understand what it means to be respectful
to the president.
Materials Teacher:
1. The book “Duck for President”
2. Center Activities Worksheets:
- Sight Word Pages
- Pattern Match Cards and Pages
- Penny Race Page and Dice
- Real v. Nonsense Pages and cards
- Roll the number and color pages and dice
- Sort the coins cups and coins
- Finish the bell or connect the dots work pages
- Dry erase markers
Students:
1. May need pencil or crayons
Planning for Learners Differentiation:
- For the Finish the bell/connect the lines page, there is
a range of ability that is covered. One of the bell
pages provides a guide for students to trace, the other
requires students to do it on their own, while the
connect the dots, requires a higher range of thinking

as students must connect the dots to create the hat.
- Other centers also have alternate activities based on
academic level.
Modifications/Accommodations:
- The groups for centers have been set up in a way that
allows students to help one another, such as group #1
that consists of Perri, Grayson, and Joey. Perri is a
strong student that can encourage and help Joey and
Grayson.
- Further Layne will have the assistance of an aid
which will help him complete the tasks if he partakes
in the tasks.

Introduction “Do any of you know what holiday is coming up on
Monday?”

“Who can tell me what we celebrate on President’s Day?”
(15 minutes) - We celebrate our presidents, both presidents of
America’s past and present!

“We will be reading a fun book that will talk a little bit
about presidents.”
- Show the cover of the book.

“This book is called Duck for President. It was written by


Doreen Cronin and illustrated by Betsy Lewin.”

“The cover of the book tells us that this book is…(fiction)!”


- Fiction means that this book is not real.

While reading:
- After reading pg. 7-8, ask students:
- How do you think duck felt about having to work so
hard on the farm? Do you think he might have upset
or mad?
- Pg. 15-16, What do you think about duck being put in
charge of the farm? How do you think that might go?
Do you think it is a smart decision for a duck to be in
charge?
- Pg. 17-18, How do you think duck will be as a
politician? Do you think this is a good role for him?
- Do you think it was hard for duck to be president?
- If it was hard for the Duck to be president, do you
think it might also be hard for the duck to be
president?

years old. This means you can be over 35, but you
cannot be under 35 to be the president.
b. The president lives in the White House. Have any of
you ever heard of the White House before? The
white house is a big white building in Washington
D.C. that was built as a home and workplace for the
president of the United States.
