III. READING
Management is the process of using resources in order to reach organizational goals. It is
a task carried out by individuals in organizations called managers. They mobilize resources such
as monetary, raw materials, capital and human resources to achieve goals that usually relate to
(but may not be limited by) profit, customer service and corporate social responsibility.

Managers, however, also ensure the efficient and effective use of other resources (raw
materials, capital and monetary resources) to reach organizational goals. Efficiency is the ability
to use resources so as to maximize output for every unit of resource input used. Effectiveness is
the ability to use resources as to get things done as they ought to be done. Efficiency is doing
things right while effectiveness is doing the right things. Good managers are both efficient and
effective.

Functions of Management

As a process, management consists of related activities of planning, organizing,

influencing and controlling. They can be distinguished conceptually but are integrally related in
practice.

● Planning – consists of setting goals and specifying ways to attain

them.
● Organizing – consists of ensuring that work is accomplished by
assigning tasks, coordinating them and allocating necessary resources.
● Influencing – consists of guiding and directing the behaviour of
subordinates for the attainment of organizational goals.
● Controlling – consists of monitoring and checking alignment of
performance to predetermined standards.

Management Levels

A typical organization is organized by section, department or division. Depending on the

scope or sphere of influence a manager has, management levels usually vary. The first level or
supervisory level of management supervises a small work group (such as a section) composed of
non-managerial workers.

Middle management is responsible for departments or divisions. They take care of

several work groups. Top management, on the other hand, is in charge of the whole
organization or at least one of its larger parts.

Management Skills

A skill is the ability to do something consistent with a desired level of performance.

There are also three (3) basic skills all managers should have. These are technical skills, human
skills and conceptual skills.

Technical skills are skills of being able to carry out tasks with proficiency. Human skills
are related to working with people and bringing out the best in them. Conceptual skills have to
do with being able to see the organization as a whole. These also consist of diagnosing the
cause and effect relationships among the many variables at work in the organization. These
enable managers to approach and solve problems analytically and systematically.

The performance of a manager depends on how well he does the management

functions using skills appropriate to his level. Managing, as a task, is dynamic.

Management Roles

Henry Mintzberg, a management scholar, did research on activities of managers and

summarized ten roles manager play into three main categories, namely: decisional,
informational and interpersonal.
