Guided self study – Week 6

1. Use de Moivre’s Theorem to prove that

sin 2𝜃𝜃 = 2 sin 𝜃𝜃 cos 𝜃𝜃, and
cos 2𝜃𝜃 = cos 2 𝜃𝜃 − sin2 𝜃𝜃

2. Determine all 𝜃𝜃 ∈ ℝ for which the following equality holds:

𝑒𝑒 𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖 = 1.

3. Prove that for 𝑧𝑧 = 𝑎𝑎 + 𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏 ∈ ℂ, the following relation holds:

𝑑𝑑 𝑧𝑧𝑧𝑧
(𝑒𝑒 ) = 𝑧𝑧𝑒𝑒 𝑧𝑧𝑧𝑧 .
𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑
Note 1: what you are doing here is proving that the power rule for differentiation holds for
imaginary powers as well as real powers. Be careful that you do not use the very rule you are
trying to prove in your proof.
Note 2: you can assume that the rule for differentiating a sum of terms still holds, that is:
If 𝑓𝑓(𝑡𝑡) = 𝑔𝑔(𝑡𝑡) + 𝑖𝑖ℎ(𝑡𝑡) where 𝑔𝑔(𝑡𝑡) and ℎ(𝑡𝑡) are real-valued functions, then
𝑓𝑓′(𝑡𝑡) = 𝑔𝑔′(𝑡𝑡) + 𝑖𝑖ℎ′(𝑡𝑡)

4. Let 𝑃𝑃(0,3,2) and 𝑄𝑄(1,2,4) be two points in ℝ3 .

a) Determine the line ℓ going through P and Q.
b) Determine a plane through the origin and perpendicular to ℓ.

5. Determine the truth value of the following statements:

a) ∀𝐮𝐮 ∈ ℝ3 (𝐮𝐮 × 𝐮𝐮 = 0)
b) (∀𝐱𝐱 ∈ ℝ2 )(∃𝐩𝐩 ∈ ℝ2 , 𝐩𝐩 ≠ 𝟎𝟎)(𝐱𝐱 ⋅ 𝐩𝐩 = 0)
c) (∃𝐩𝐩 ∈ ℝ2 , 𝐩𝐩 ≠ 𝟎𝟎)(∀𝐱𝐱 ∈ ℝ2 )(𝐱𝐱 ⋅ 𝐩𝐩 = 0)

6. Under what geometric condition will three distinct points in ℝ3 not determine a unique
plane passing through them? How can this condition be expressed algebraically in terms of
the position vectors 𝒓𝒓1 , 𝐫𝐫2 and 𝐫𝐫3 of the three points?
