The phulkari program aims to bring
about a structural change in the
community otherwise entrenched
with inequality. It aims to empower
the marginalized rural woman,
generate sustainable home based
employment, which leads to greater
participation in the society, giving
these women a sense of fulfilment and
economic independence.

Social enterprise for revival of
LANGUISHING CRAFT
& lost love for Phulkari handicraft while
empowering women artisans

We started our journey in 2017 from Home .

“Phulkari was an obvious choice as it's one
of the most traditional, pre-eminent
handicrafts and also one that needs the
most assistance. Often, assistance and
investment in real handcrafted Phulkari go
hand in hand with investing in the lives of
rural women.
If and whenever we are able to sell any
piece, good percent of the profit goes back
to the artisan.”
Another issue is the reticence, reserve,
and sometimes low levels of self-
confidence of the artisans themselves. To
empower the tradition of Phulkari, Shelz
Phulkari believes that they have to
empower the humans behind it. “Phulkari
is not their nine-to-five job; it is a tradition
handed down to them by their mothers,
grandmothers and so on. It is as much a
part of their life as much as it is a
livelihood that feeds them and sends their
children to school.”

And finally, our Life was totally changed

Bagh, "the garden"
When the embroidery work was covering the whole surface
of the khaddar the phulkari was called a BAGH
("GARDEN")
The making of a bagh was requiring so much talent and
patience that it was kept for very special occasions.
Furthermore, the quantity of pat needed to achieve such a
piece was implying big expenses and thus was a way for
families to display their wealth.

Darshan Dwar
Darshan Dwar, that can be translated as "the gate through
which God can be seen", unlike other phulkari was not
made for a person but for a temple as an offering to thank
the gods after a wish had been fulfilled.

Vari-da-bagh
("Vari": gift offered to the bride by her in-laws)
This bagh was gifted to the bride by her in-laws
when she was entering their house, her new home,
on
the wedding day.
It is an exceptional fact as all the other phulkari were
part of her dowry and, thus, were provided by her
own family.
Vari-da-bagh is always made on an orange-reddish
khaddar and, except for its border and sometimes
a small decoration, it is always embroidered on its
whole surface with a single golden or orange
coloured pat.
