LINUX John Michael A.

ADMINISTRATION Instructor I
WHAT IS LINUX

• Linux itself is the core of the operating system: the kernel or, more
colloquially, the heart.
• The kernel is the program acting as chief of operations. It is responsible
for starting and stopping other programs (such as text editors, web
browsers, services, and so on), handling requests for memory,
accessing disks, and managing network connections.
WHAT DOES SYSTEM
ADMINISTRATOR DO?
• System Administrators are in charge of servers" as well as of computers,
desktop machines, laptops and, increasingly, mobile devices.
• With the evolution of computing coming full circle, we nd that the
migration from the mainframe computer to the personal and
independent computing device to the networked server back to the
central Infrastructure as a Service model inherent in today’s Cloud
Computing concepts places the System Administrator in the middle of
it all.
• System Administrators typically work for corporations across industries to
ensure that employees have secure and efficient computer systems to
fulfill their daily job responsibilities. They work closely with IT personnel
and company employees to update systems, address security
breaches and help troubleshoot issues. Their job is to plan for
problematic situations and create procedures to restore computer
systems and their functionality. They may also be responsible for coding
systems or updating programs by altering code strings if necessary.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES?

Identify any problems in the system, anticipate potential issues and repair systems and software
when necessary.

Setting up new users and giving them access to the intranet

Managing and maintaining the file servers

Operating the firewall for the organization

SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
REQUIREMENTS
• Education requirements for a System Administrator vary
because it’s a role that can be filled by people who
have knowledge either through education or actual
work experience with operating and monitoring local
area networks. An ideal candidate could have an
associate or bachelor’s degree in computer science, but
someone with multiple certifications can be just as
capable of fulfilling the job duties. Certifications include
Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE), CompTIA
Server+, Red Hat Certified System Administrator, Red Hat
Certified Engineer and VMware Certified Professional.

SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR VS.
CLOUD ADMINISTRATOR
• System administrators focus on traditional computer
systems, virtual systems and servers including
implementing, configuring and managing them. Cloud
administrators focus on an organization's cloud
computing and implement, configure, manage and
monitor the cloud management service.

PREREQUISITE OF A CLOUD
ADMINISTRATOR
• Like system administrator, there is no set-in-stone path to
becoming a cloud administrator. However, there is a major
notable difference — you must have a high-level
understanding of cloud computing and specialized cloud
knowledge. Some common traits cloud administrators have
include:
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related discipline
• At least three years of experience working with cloud
computing and related work experience — related roles
include cloud analyst
• Certifications: ComptTIA Cloud+, Professional Cloud
Administrator (hosted by the Cloud Credential Council) and
proprietary certifications, including Azure and AWS
