Proofpoint Email Protection and Microsoft Defender for Office 365
Rajitha Jayasekera
We mainly use it to identify software vulnerabilities. It reports all the software vulnerabilities installed in our web stations and
servers.
With Defender for Office 365, we have been able to increase the security posture across our organization. Within the first
month of using this product, we realized that benefit.
When it comes to software vulnerabilities, we can target them and update the software as soon as we see that there is a
vulnerability. And then we can make sure that they are updated and check that the update process was successful within a
different department. That has really helped us improve our productivity.
The solution saves us time because we don't have to go here and there to identify things. It's a single portal that has all the
details we need. Their support is also good. These features have, again, helped us improve our productivity a lot. It saves us
about 25 percent of our time.
It has also saved us money because we don't have to pay for other security products like Nessus. This solution has almost
everything we got from other products, so we don't have to go for an additional solution. It's saving us about 50 percent, cost-
wise.
Our time to detect threats has decreased. With products like Nessus, until their scan runs, we are not aware whether a threat
is fixed or not. But with Defender, within one to two hours that information is reflected. With Nessus, sometimes we had to wait
a day to see that information reflected in the portal. Because we are aware of issues earlier, we can act on them sooner.
13
Proofpoint Email Protection and Microsoft Defender for Office 365
The most valuable feature is the score. By looking at the score, you can identify if you are at risk or not.
It also gives the vulnerability status according to the versions you have selected. Let's say you have Google Chrome. It
mentions the versions it has, and it updates. Within two hours of an update, it is reflected in the dashboard. That's really nice
to have.
It gives me everything I need, visibility-wise. It also helps prioritize threats across our enterprise and that's very important. That
means we can identify the critical vulnerabilities first and keep an eye on other vulnerabilities. By looking at the dashboard, I
immediately get an idea of how critical an issue is and we can fix vulnerabilities before they result in an attack.
It has also helped eliminate looking at multiple dashboards, giving us one XDR dashboard, which has made our security
operations really easy. We can also create internal tickets within the portal itself. We can assign them to people and see how
long it took them to close the tickets. That makes things really easy.
In one of the reports, I can get the exact place where a vulnerable file resides. But for that, I need to explicitly go into the
device and check. If they could include that file part in the report, without my having to go to the device itself, that would help.
I have been using Microsoft Defender for Office 365 for about two years.
It is stable.
There are bugs here and there, but they have been able to rectify them.
14
Proofpoint Email Protection and Microsoft Defender for Office 365
It's scalable. It discovers almost all of the workstations and servers across our organization. We have about 3,000 endpoints.
Whenever we ask a question, they provide us with a solution. I'm happy with their technical support.
Positive
We previously used Nessus. We switched mainly because of the cost and the integration. With Nessus, we had to install an
agent, but with Defender, since we were already using it, we could just turn it on with the cloud portal and deploy it very
easily.
I wasn't involved in the initial setup, but in terms of maintenance, we push it through Windows Update so we don't have to
explicitly do any updates.
If you already have a deployment method, like CCM or something similar, it will be easy. Even if not, there are several other
deployment methods that could support any scenario.
15
Proofpoint Email Protection and Microsoft Defender for Office 365
We already had an Office subscription, so we just started a trial and we were happy with it and we went with it.
In terms of a best-of-breed strategy rather than a single vendor security suite, a single vendor security suite is good when it
comes to deployment and manageability. It's easy.

Proofpoint Email Protection and Microsoft Defender for Office 365
Mohamed-Kamal
I have some concerns about Proofpoint mail flow rules. It's not smart.
Proofpoint has a lot of false alarms. Even their mail flow rules are not the best thing. Mimecast and Microsoft Office 365 are
better than them. Many emails are marked as spam unnecessarily. I've had issues and have had to open many tickets.
The stability is good. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's reliable.
17
Proofpoint Email Protection and Microsoft Defender for Office 365
While most of my clients have under 100 users, my understanding is if it works for 100, it can work for 1,000 or 10,000 users.
Scaling shouldn't be an issue.
I've talked to support about creating rules and the issues we've had. I've had to open many tickets with them.
For example, last month our web application sent an invoice for one of the customers, and it relayed the email on behalf of the
customer domain. This email was marked as phishing. Even when the SBS was correct and the DCOM was correct. I opened a
ticket. The rule didn't work. They responded fast. Even though I have problems, I find them to be responsive.
I have used Defender, Proofpoint, and Mimecast. I use them daily for different companies and have subscriptions for all three.
In my company, we use Defender.
Mimecast and Microsoft are better than Proofpoint when it comes to mail rules. On Proofpoint, the rules don't work as
expected.
The solution is straightforward and simple to set up. It's not overly complex.
I'm a freelancer working to support some companies that are using Proofpoint.
Sometimes I create a subscription for them and configure everything from scratch; sometimes, I take it already configured and
just maintain it.

I'd rate it seven out of ten based on the mail flow issues I have witnessed.
18
Proofpoint Email Protection and Microsoft Defender for Office 365
Sathish Mani
The targeted attack protection that we use has been great, as has the email filtering and the rules that we have set for
Proofpoint. The quarantine capabilities are very useful.
The false positives are an issue. There are many false positives that come in, which you report to Proofpoint. Sometimes they
take time to update those things. They say there's an option that we can use to report false positives. However, it is not a
quick remedy. You go and report it, and still, you have to take action on it and clear those emails getting blocked. It's too
cumbersome.
We don't have the option to scan a password-protected attachment. I have to either blindly whitelist it as it will get blocked
since an email with attachments normally gets scanned. We'd like to have some mechanism in place where we can scan these
protected attachments or whitelist the domain.
19
Proofpoint Email Protection and Microsoft Defender for Office 365
We purchased some licenses, and we are using all of them. For us, scalability is not a problem. We have been able to scale it.
Technical support is good. The expertise that they offer is good. The only thing that I have a problem with is we have our
support operations in India and their availability for a call can be mismatched. That would normally take some time. You don't
get a suitable person in the time zone available around the clock.
I was not there when it was deployed. We only manage at the application level.
We do not need that many admins to maintain it. We might need three or so. Most of the time, it's only checking on the
blocked emails, which are actually good emails, and sometimes if there are investigations required and maintenance, they
would handle those tasks. At a minimum, you need three, depending on the size of your organization. They would maintain it
for the shift, for fixed operations hours, not on a rotational basis. You might have to put in more resources if you have
rotational.
Depending upon your company's revenue, you can make up your mind about whether you want to invest that money or not.
However, the offering is niche in the market today compared to other products, like Exchange Online Protections, which is an
evolving product. It's growing. In contrast, Proofpoint has been around in the listing for quite some time, so they mature in
terms of detection of suspicious emails and its email filtering system. Of course, while the pricing is rather fair, clients would
always prefer to pay less.
20
I cannot speak to the exact price.
The price is fixed. It doesn't change according to companies. It gives you multiple package options, so you can pick what suits
you.
You also get other add-on services, which if you've got a subject matter expert within Proofpoint, then you don't have to buy
additional personnel from them to coordinate. You wouldn't need a customer success manager or somebody doing a health
check for it. That might increase your cost.
Next time, if I get an opportunity to reapply for a license, I might think of removing some of the add-on services, which might
reduce the cost or the overall price that we are paying today. I don't know the actual standalone product cost, meaning what
would be the product cost alone. It's dealt with by our procurement team, or they can check with Proofpoint to see the product
pricing.
I have cross-checked this solution with Defender right now. We're doing a cost-benefit analysis and seeing if it makes sense
for us to use it at all or not.
When you are an SME, every product company is trying to promote a product and sell it to you; however, if you don't know
how it functions and its capability and effectiveness, then you probably end up buying what you need. Constantly evaluate any
product you're buying. I've seen Proofpoint used in the last three companies that I worked with, so I have a lot of experience
with this particular solution.

Bar length
The total ranking of a product, represented by the bar length, is based on a weighted aggregate score. The score is calculated as follows:
For each ranking factor of Reviews, Views, and Comparisons, the product with the highest count in each ranking factor gets a maximum 18
points. Every other product gets assigned points based on its total in proportion to the #1 product in that ranking factor. For example, if a
product has 80% of the number of reviews compared to the product with the most reviews then the product's points for reviews would be 18
* 80% = 14.4.
Both Rating and Words/Review are awarded on a fixed linear scale. For Rating, the maximum score is 28 points awarded linearly between 6-
10 (e.g. 6 or below=0 points; 7.5=10.5 points; 9.0=21 points; 10=28 points). For Words/Review, the maximum score is 18 points awarded
linearly between 0-900 words (e.g. 600 words = 12 points; 750 words = 15 points; 900 or more words = 18 points). If a product has fewer than
ten reviews, the point contribution for Rating and Words/Review is reduced: 1/3 reduction in points for products with 5-9 reviews, two-thirds
reduction for products with fewer than five reviews.
Reviews that are more than 24 months old, as well as those written by resellers, are completely excluded from the ranking algorithm.
All products with 50+ points are designated as a Leader in their category.
