6.1 INTRODUCTION
All construction works will include electrical installations, both in the permanent works, and in the
plant, and temporary works required to construct them. It is important to understand the effects of elec-
tric current on the materials through that it flows. These effects can include heating that involves power
loss, or corrosion that is discussed in Chapter 31. Electrical systems are also used for most methods for
testing materials, and this is discussed in Section 6.10.

called electrons. If 6.25 × 1018 electrons flow into an object (and do not flow out again), it has a nega-
tive charge of 1 Coulomb (C).
If a charged object comes near another charged object, a force acts between them. Opposite charg-
es attract. Thus, when, for example, a positively charged particle flows out of an object and leaves
it with a net negative charge, it will be subject to an attractive force to draw it back in. This is what
happens when steel is corroding, and a positive metal ion flows out of it. This is discussed in detail in
Chapter 31.
Like charges repel, so the electrostatic force will tend to make charges dissipate. Thus, if the elec-
trons in an object are not uniformly distributed, the electrostatic force will tend to make them move
until there is no net charge at any point.
As with static charge, objects with current flow in them will have forces between them. These are
magnetic forces. If the currents are in the same direction, the force is one of attraction between the
wires. Because the force is at right angles to the flow of current, it will have no effect on the current
in either wire. In order to increase the current in the wires, they must be moved. This is the basis of
an electrical generator. If one of the wires is being turned around a shaft, it will move backward and
forward relative to the other, and the current in it will be driven first in one direction, and then the other.
This is the easiest way to generate electricity, and the current is called alternating current (AC), as op-
posed to direct current (DC) that is a continuous flow in one direction. The current in the main supply
reverses direction 50 or 60 times per second, that is, the frequency is 50 or 60 cycles per second, or 50
or 60 Hz. (50 Hz is used for main supply in the United States and United Kingdom, and 60 Hz in much
of the rest of Europe.)
SAFETY
If you are working with high voltage direct current systems, you should be aware that they are far more dangerous than
alternating current. 50 V DC can kill, but 110 V AC (as normally used for main supply in the USA) is less dangerous.
However, the UK and European mains voltage of 220 V is very dangerous.
The theory of magnetism is complex, and is not covered in detail here. Some of its consequences are:
• If a wire carrying direct current is flowing close to a conductor, opposite charges will build up on
each side of the conductor. This may, for example, cause corrosion.

• If a wire carrying alternating current is flowing close to a conductor, it will induce a current in it.
Fortunately, at mains frequency, this effect is not normally great, but it increases with frequency.
High frequency cables must therefore be “screened” with a conductor.
6.4 VOLTAGE
Because of the electrostatic force, the current in a wire will tend to flow toward or away from a nearby
charged object (depending on whether the charge is positive or negative). The voltage on the wire is a
measure of this effect. It may be defined as follows, in terms of the energy required to move the charge:
if the energy required to work against the electrostatic force, and move 1 C of charge along a wire, from
one point to another, is 1 J, then the voltage between the points is 1 V. Thus:

The voltage is also known as the potential difference. Thus the potential at one point relative to
another is the voltage between them.

6.6 RESISTANCE
6.6.1 PROPERTIES OF CONDUCTORS
If a voltage is applied to a perfect conductor, a very large current will flow until the voltage is the same
at each end. A real wire is, however, not a perfect conductor, and when current flows down it, some
energy will be lost, and the voltage at each end will never be quite the same. Normally, the energy is
lost in the form of heat but, for example, in an incandescent light bulb, some of it is light.
The resistance is defined as the ratio between the voltage drop along the wire and the current in it. Thus:

6.6.2 RESISTIVITY
Now, consider the situation if two wires are connected together at each end, and a voltage is applied
across them (see Fig. 6.1). The current through each wire will be V/R, so the total current will be 2V/R.
This means that the two wires are equivalent to a single wire with resistance R/2. Thus, by doubling
the size of the wire, we halve the resistance. In a similar way, it may be seen that doubling the length
would double the resistance.
This effect is shown in an equation as:

where R is the resistance of the wire, L is its length, A is its cross-sectional area, and ρ is the resistivity
(in Ωm) of the material from which the wire is made. The resistivity is a material property, and does
not depend on the dimensions of the wire. Values of resistivity are given in Table 6.1. By definition,
materials with high resistivity are insulators, and those with low resistivity are good conductors. The
resistivity of materials almost always increases as their temperature increases.

6.7 CAPACITANCE
For the study of corrosion rates and circuits (see Chapter 31), it is necessary to define capacitance. Like
resistance, this is a property of a component with a voltage across it but, unlike a resistor, no direct cur-
rent flows through a perfect capacitor. When a voltage is applied across a capacitor, charge is stored in
it. The capacitance is defined as:

and is measured in coulomb/volt or Farad. A 1 F capacitor would be very large. Real capacitors are
rated in microfarad.
A capacitor is shown schematically in Fig. 6.2.
If a (direct) current flows in from the left, it will cause a positive charge to build up on the plate on
the left. This will attract a negative charge to the right hand plate that will flow along the wire to the
right, giving a net positive current away from it. However, this will soon stop. The only type of current
that can flow through, it is an alternating current.
6.8 POWER
Power is the rate of doing work, and is measured in joules/second or watts (see equation (4.1)). Current
is the rate of flow of charge in coulombs/second or amperes. Thus, from equations (6.1) and (6.2):

If the voltage in equations (6.9) and (6.10) is the voltage between the positive and negative wires,
the power will be the power delivered through the wires. If the voltage is the voltage drop in the wire
itself, then the power will be the power loss (through heating) of the wire itself.
Extension leads for use with mains electricity often have labels on them that give two different cur-
rent ratings, for example, 4 A coiled, and 13 A uncoiled. This is important because the heat generated
in the cable increases with the square of the current, and as the temperature goes up, the resistance (and
thus the heat generated) increases. In a cable, the current must flow along the neutral wire, as well as
the live wire, and heat will be generated in both.
transducers may be seen in Figs 3.9 and 6.5. The ones shown in these figures are linear variable dif-
ferential transformers (LVDTs) that work on the more complex principle of variable inductance, and
require an alternating current supply. They are more expensive than potentiometers, but more respon-
sive because they do not require the sliding connector shown in Fig. 6.6.
6.11 CONCLUSIONS
• Electric charge is a measure of the surplus (or deficit) of charged particles in an object.
• Electric current is a measure of the movement of charge.
• Voltage is a measure of work done against the electrostatic force.
• Electric field is a measure of voltage gradient.
• Resistance is a measure of the voltage required to create a current.
