Challenges of
New Normal
WHAT IS
NEW NORMAL?

A new normal is a state to which an economy, society,

etc. settles following a crisis, when this differs from the
situation that prevailed prior to the start of the crisis.

The term has been employed in relation to World War

I, the September 11 attacks, the financial crisis of
2007–2008, the aftermath of the 2008–2012 global
recession, the COVID-19 pandemic and other events.
WHAT IS
NEW NORMAL?

Currently, the term ‘new normal’ that refers to online-

remote learning is quickly becoming a buzz word. But
what does ‘new normal’ mean? While the term has no
definitive meaning, it has been assumed by many to
be a more technology-driven teaching and learning in
a post-COVID context. It has been anticipated that
education in the ‘new normal’ will never be the same
as pre-pandemic times.
Distance learning is any kind of remote learning in

DISTANCE
which the student is not physically present in the
classroom. The student may be anywhere while
learning takes place. Distance learning is educating

LEARNING students online. Over the years, DL has become an

alternative mode of teaching and learning (Alsoliman,
2015). It has become another venue for education and
instruction.
In the Philippines, DL is being offered in two forms:
DISTANCE online distance learning (ODL) and modular
distance learning (MDL). But most parents and
LEARNING students would prefer ODL, considering and
hoping that the interaction between students and
the teacher can ensure learning.
ONLINE
TEACHING
Online teaching is the process of educating
others via the internet. Various methods can
be used, such as one-on-one video calls,
group video calls, and webinars. You can
start teaching from any location (home,
coffee shop, co-working space) and enroll
students from various backgrounds and
geographical areas.
TWO TYPES OF ONLINE
TEACHING
01

Asynchronous Teaching Online

Real-time Teaching (Synchronous Teaching)
02
REAL-TIME TEACHING
(SYNCHRONOUS TEACHING)
Using web conferencing services
such as Zoom, MS Teams, and
Skype, you can teach classes online
quite easily. The lessons take place
in real-time just like in a classroom,
but online and using equipment
such as your computer/laptop, a
webcam, and a microphone.
REAL-TIME TEACHING
(SYNCHRONOUS TEACHING)
The advantage though is that you
get that real-time interactivity with
your students, i.e. that instant
communication where they can, for
example, ask or be asked questions
and you can instantly answer and
help them.
CHALLENGES

1. Work organization and time

management

2. Technology shortage

3. Connectivity

4. Computer literacy

5. Hard of hearing students

6. Data privacy and insecurity

ASYNCHRONOUS
TEACHING ONLINE
The other type of teaching online is asynchronous
teaching. This means that you put courses online on a
platform such as Teachable and then the student can
do that course anytime they want 24/7.

So with asynchronous teaching online, there is no real

limit to who you can teach as they can study at any
time of the day and from anywhere and without the
worry or hassle of setting up a webcam to learn online.
They can just log in and start doing your course.
CHALLENGES

Lack of personal touch

Lack of attention

Requires learner’s self-discipline

OFFLINE
TEACHING

Offline education is the traditional counterpart

of online education and the original mode of
learning that allows students to engage with
their peers and teachers in a face-to-face
setting on a regular basis. Even if online
education is anticipated to be the future of
education, it will never be able to replace the
whole nature of traditional education.
OFFLINE
TEACHING

Offline mode of education is a face-to-face

teaching and learning method that helps a
teacher impart education to his/her pupil in
easiest possible way by understanding if
every student is getting the subject properly
as there is face-to-face interaction between
a teacher and a student.
OFFLINE
EDUCATION
Offline education is the traditional
counterpart of online education and the
original mode of learning that allows
students to engage with their peers and
teachers in a face-to-face setting on a
regular basis. Even if online education is
anticipated to be the future of education, it
will never be able to replace the whole
nature of traditional education.
ADVANTAGES
Offline classes encourage students to collaborate on
projects with other students and help them learn
new skills. Students become more introverted as a
result of online education since they only
communicate with other students through online
chatting rather than face-to-face interaction.

Additionally, offline education allows teachers to

observe their students' responses and behaviour
and respond as needed. As a result, no matter how
advanced online education becomes, offline
education will continue to play an important role in
students' growth.
When it comes to online classes, teachers can
easily educate their students via virtual
classrooms. Students can easily access learning
materials from anywhere as long as they have
proper access to an internet connection.
Online classes provide teachers with a number
of online learning tools including videos, audio,
animations, virtual whiteboards, virtual
conference rooms and live chats with the
students.
CONCLUSION
On the other hand, offline classes provide
students with a practical learning environment
within the walls of a physical classroom. It
allows students to closely interact with their
teachers as well as participate actively in live
discussions and debates. Students can also
participate in recreational activities like art and
physical education which contributes to the
overall mental and physical development of the
student.
