Age 7 in America Documentary

The story of seven-year-olds from various socioeconomic and ethnic origins in America

is told by Meryl Steep in her role as the narrator of the documentary film Age 7 in America.

There are a total of fifteen children in participating in the documentary. Each of the children's

homes is described, as well as additional facts about the family’s status, the structure of the

family, and their perspectives on subjects like crime and drugs, education, gender, their future,

and the world among others.  There are three components of child development covered in the

film: the physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional development of the kids themselves.

When it comes to children’s development, their education has a big impact. Those that attend

prominent schools like Alexis, Lucy, and Kate are more likely to have a positive and all-around

development as they get older. The children’s development is most likely to be influenced by the

family's social status. Children from good households aspire to establish a family and raise

children of their own. After the parents' divorce, a youngster who was neglected by his father

will almost certainly grow up with a bad view of family.

Discrimination, prejudice, or violence against a particular ethnic group has already had an

impact on children’s views of their own identities. for instance, because his father urged him not

to, a young white boy claims he doesn't like or interact with any black children. According to the

black girl, white people dislike black people and that's why they face racial discrimination. These

events have a lasting impact on the way these children view themselves and others. Because of

their race, children are more prone to distance themselves from individuals they dislike or

believe dislike them. In the example of Luis, whose mother is a drug addict and lives in a

homeless shelter, poor housing or homelessness can have a substantial impact on the child’s
socio-emotional development. As he grows up, this child is most likely to be affected negatively

by their current situation of homelessness.
