NOTE:
It is recommended that the BG-20 shelf be installed in ECI
Telecom’s ETSI rack (2200 mm or 2600 mm). It can also
be installed in standard ETSI and US 23” racks with filters
or in 19” racks without filters, which have been approved
by ECI Telecom.
A bandwidth upgrade from ADM-1 to ADM-4 or the
activation of any of the six Ethernet ports in BG-20B
requires the purchase of an appropriate license.
Management Architecture
EMS-BGF
The EMS-BGF provides full-feature BG-20, BG-30, and BG-64 support. The
EMS-BGF supports two modes: Integrated and Standalone. In Integrated mode,
the EMS-BGF functions at the EML level in the TMN scheme and is fully
integrated with LightSoft, which provides complete NML functionality. It is
designed as an open system in compliance with the CORBA standard. In
Standalone mode, the EMS-BGF provides full EML functions, as well as
numerous NML functions, including network topology management,
end-to-end trail management, and so on. This mode provides a very low-cost
management solution for networks that contain only BG-20, BG-30, and
BG-64 NEs.
The EMS-BGF can control scores of BG-20, BG-30, and BG-64 NEs at a time.
It provides a wide range of management functions, including alarms,
configuration, performance, inventory, provisioning, and security management.
LCT-BGF
The LCT-BGF is a PC-based BroadGate Product Line installation,
maintenance, commissioning, and configuration tool for field technicians. The
GUI of LCT-BGF makes this product extremely easy to use. It provides rapid
direct connection to deployed NEs using an Ethernet interface.
The LCT-BGF includes all the functionality required by a technician arriving at
a site: full installation, NE commissioning (including slot assignment, IP
routing, and DCC port configuration), and troubleshooting. The system
provides the user with a clear view and control of NE internals (cards, objects,
status, configuration). Password protection ensures only authorized access from
the craft to field-installed equipment.

The following table describes the front panel LED indicators of the
DMGE_4_L2.
DMGE_8_L2
The DMGE_8_L2 is a L2 data Tslot module with eight GbE interfaces on the
LAN side and 96 x EoS interfaces on the WAN side. The module occupies a
double slot in the Tslot module space and can be installed only in slot pairs
TS1+TS2 and TS6+TS7 of the BG-64. A spacer located between each of these
slot pairs must be removed, to enable the installation of the DMGE_8_L2. The
procedure for removing this spacer is described in the BG-64 IOMM. The
module supports MPLS by appropriate licensing. The total WAN bandwidth is
32 x VC-4. The DMGE_8_L2 has two combo ports and six optical ports. The
combo ports support direct connection of electrical signals through dedicated
RJ-45 connectors, or optical signals through SFP housings. The other six ports
are SFP based and enable electrical or optical GbE by insertion of different
type of SFP – copper SFP or optical SFP.
The following table describes the front panel LED indicators of the
DMGE_8_L2.
Pluggable Interfaces
(SFPs/XFPs)
SFPs are a new variety of modular optical transceivers with a small footprint
and low power consumption. SFP transceivers operate at rates of up to 2.7
Gbps with either electrical or optical ports, including both colored and
noncolored interfaces (C/DWDM).
The SFP transceiver modules are used for the entire spectrum of interfaces,
including intraoffice, short and long ranges, and the interchangeable transceiver
components that are utilized throughout the product line. The standardized
modular design of the transceiver components facilitates network maintenance
and upgrades. Instead of replacing an entire circuit board containing a number
of soldered modules, a single module can be removed/replaced for repair or
upgrade, providing significant cost savings.
All transceivers provide power monitoring capabilities. The SFPs for STM-16
have the added capability of using low-cost colored interfaces (C/DWDM),
further reducing maintenance costs. Transceivers provide a significant
advantage for the SDH and data cards used in the BG-20 and BG-30 shelves.

Overview
This chapter provides a detailed description of the data modules available for
the BroadGate Product Line.
ECI Telecom offers the following types of data cards:
MPLS Service Cards support an advanced Ethernet-based metro-core
layer. These are MPLS Carrier Class Switch cards that enable
next-generation Ethernet applications such as triple play, VPLS business
connectivity, 3G Ethernet-based aggregation, and CoC bandwidth
applications, supporting up to 2.5 Gbps. The MPLS cards provide complete
Provider Bridge (QinQ) functionality and MPLS switching functionality,
offering scalability and smooth interoperability with IP/MPLS core routers.
The MPLS cards work with both electrical and optical interfaces.

The Weighed Random Early Discard (WRED) technique used to smooth traffic
pattern under congestion conditions supports the policing procedure as follows:
When traffic exceeds the module capabilities, it must discard packets. Any
TCP client detecting discarded packets will reduce its transmission rate to
half. After packets are no longer discarded, the rate will slowly be
increased as long as there is no packet loss.
If the module would discard packets only during congestion conditions,
traffic volume would suffer from the sawtooth syndrome: after a series of
packets are discarded, all the clients would drop their rate to half, resulting
in partial utilization of the network, and will together again increase the
rate until the network is congested again.
WRED prevents this behavior by discarding a small part of the packets before
its buffers are full. As a result, only a small number of TCP clients will
decrease their rate and traffic utilization will not drop.
BroadGate Layer 2 cards support WRED, and its characteristics are separately
configurable for each of the four priority classes of the internal Ethernet switch.
Port-based VLANs
Client frames may enter the provider's network tagged or untagged. A client
that provides tagged frames attaches his CVLAN (Client VLAN ID) and
priority bits to the Ethernet frames. The provider uses this information to
identify the client and decide how to handle the traffic within his network.
In many cases the provider is not allowed to change the client tagging because
the client needs it to continue the traffic handling at the far end. To facilitate
traffic handling, the provider attaches his SVLAN (Service Provider VLAN)
containing VLAN ID (VID) and CoS bits at the ingress port, and removes them
at the egress.
Attach/Detach VLAN
BroadGate Layer 2 cards enable the provider to add a VLAN tag to incoming
untagged frames. This VLAN is named PVID and is maintained throughout the
network. The PVID enables the operator to identify different clients arriving
from different ports, even after being multiplexed in point-to-multipoint
configurations. The PVID is detached from the frames that are outgoing from
the same port which was configured to attach and detach PVID.
Additional features
Additional supported features include:
Autonegotiation - supported by ETY ports to select common transmission
parameters with the customer's equipment connected. The port capable of
transmission at various rates (10/100 Mbps or 10/100/1000 Mbps) and
mode (full duplex) exchanges data with the connected device. The two
devices then choose the best possible mode of operation that is shared by
both, where higher speed is preferred over lower speed.
Store and Forwarding - mechanism used to check the integrity of the
frame at the ingress port. The frame's Source and Destination Address and
CRC are checked. Only error-free frames are forwarded, and frames with
errors are dropped.
Layer 2 Control Protocol Handling - Ethernet ports handle some specific
MAC addresses in a special way in order to provide predicted efficient
behavior of the network. As opposed to a standard service frame that is
transported untouched from side to side, these special frames should be
treated differently. For example, PAUSE frames have their meaning only
within the local link and therefore should be discarded immediately upon
reception. Other MAC addresses are configurable to be discarded or
forwarded transparently.
Access-Controlled Management
Intelligent management access controls are needed at the customer edge to
keep unauthorized users from accessing the provider’s network. Preventing
denial of service attacks involves deciding whether to accept, discard, or
monitor certain traffic.
Port Mirroring
Port mirroring helps the supervisor monitor the network. Port mirroring copies
traffic from a specific port to a target port, namely, copying packets entering or
exiting a port or entering a VLAN, to a local port for local monitoring. This
mechanism helps track network errors or abnormal packet transmission without
interrupting the flow of data. Moreover, the port mirroring feature enables a
basic "lawful interception" application for future development.
C-VLAN Translation
This unique feature enables the merging of two different customer VLANs
from different locations. Due to the VLAN translation at the edge of the
provider network, two different VLANs that are located in different places can
be merged into one VLAN, or an external S-VLAN of another provider can be
mapped to an internal S-VLAN.
Only one C-VLAN translation per UNI port per VSI is supported.
C-VLAN translation is bidirectional.
C-VLAN Bundling
VLAN bundling carries the traffic of multiple VLANs. Multiple customer
C-VLANs can map through a single Ethernet service on the UNI. All-to-one
bundling is a special case whereby all customer VLANs map to a single
Ethernet service at the UNI.

The SM_C37.94 module provides two teleprotection interfaces per IEEE
C37.94 for the SM_10E. The interfaces enable transparent communication
between different vendors' teleprotection equipment and multiplexer devices,
using multimode optical fibers.
In general, teleprotection equipment is employed to control and protect
different system elements in electricity distribution lines.
Traditionally, the interface between teleprotection equipment and multiplexers,
in high-voltage environments at electric utilities, was copper-based. This media
transfers the critical information to the network operation center. These
high-speed, low-energy signal interfaces are vulnerable to intra-substation
electromagnetic and radio frequency interference (EMI and RFI), signal ground
loops, and ground potential rise, which considerably reduce the reliability of
communications during electrical faults.
The optimal solution is based on optical fibers. Optical fibers do not have
ground paths and are immune to noise interference, which eliminates data
errors common to electrical connections.

corresponding shelf it is installed on, enabling a single I/O backup module to
protect the main (working) card when a failure is detected.

Overview
BGW-E platforms are Multiservice RAdio Node (MRAN) expansion shelves
that provide microwave capabilities to the BroadGate Product Line Family.
The BGW-E is available in two options:
BGW-20E - for use with the BG-20B
BGW-E - for use with the BG-30B or BG-64
BGW-E and BGW-20E platforms are 2RU high density modular radio add-ons
for multiservice base units. The BGW-E/20E expansion shelves support the
complete range of native and hybrid TDM, PDH, SDH, and Ethernet services,
over microwave, fiber, or electrical media, with up to six radio directions. This
is a versatile, scalable, cost-effective add-on for existing BroadGate MSPP
platforms. Integrating this add-on platform into the network configuration is
not traffic-affecting.
INF_WE
The INF_WE is a DC power-filter module that can be plugged into the BGW-E
or BGW-20E shelves. Two INF_WE modules are needed for power feeding
redundancy. The module performs the following functions:
Provides single DC power input and power supply for all modules in the
BGW-E/20E
Performs input filtering function for the entire BGW-E/20E shelf
Supplies adjustable output voltage for fans in the BGW-E/20E
Provides an indication of input power loss and detection of under/over
voltage
Shuts down the power supply when under/over voltage is detected
The following figure shows a general view of the INF_WE.
FCU_WE
The FCU_WE is a pluggable Fan Control module with four fans for cooling the
BGW-E shelf. The fans’ running speed can be one of the following three
modes: Low, Medium, and Turbo. The speed is controlled by the
corresponding Main Control Processor (MCP) card in the base shelf according
to the environmental temperature and fan failure status.
The following figure shows the front panel of the FCU_WE.
The panel of the FCU_WE includes the LED indications described in the
following table.
FCU_W20E

shelves. Additional extension cards and modules supported in the
BGW-E/BGW-20E are list in the following table.
The extension cards and modules support hot insertion and can be added at any
time to any installed and operational BGW-E or BGW-20E in the field.
The following table lists the components on the MW_2M panel and describes
their functionality.
MIF_E
The MIF_E is a Modem Intermediate Frequency module for the BGW-E/20E
expansion shelves. MIF_E modules are inserted into MW_2 base cards used in
BGW-E/20E expansion platforms.
MIF modules receive incoming signals from a radio antenna and convert them
to TDM or Ethernet traffic for transmission through the rest of the network.
(The radio signals are actually collected by the radio antenna, converted to an
IF by a modem, and transmitted through a coaxial cable to the MIF module.)
Supported features include:
Automatic Transmitter Power Control (ATPC)
ACM for smooth flow control with no packet loss and intelligent
congestion management through profiling based on CoS and color
MIF modules installed (in MW_2M cards) in BGW-E/20E platforms can be
configured in protection mode to protect each other. The configuration options
are:
Two MIF modules installed in the same MW_2M (horizontally) protect
each other
Two MIF modules installed in adjacent MW_2M cards (vertically) protect
each other.
The last option is possible only for MW_2M cards installed in the upper TS
slots in the BGW-E/20E.
The indication of the PROT. LED depends on the configuration of the MIF_E
as a Main or Protection module. The indications are explained in the following
table.

the following main functions:
Power distribution for up to four protected XDM 100, BG Product
Line, or SR9600 Series shelves, installed on the same rack. The nominal
DC power voltage is 48 VDC or 60 VDC. Since these Product Line shelves
can use redundant power sources, the RAP-4B supports connection to two
separate DC power circuits.
Each DC power circuit of each shelf is protected by a circuit breaker, which
also serves as a power on/off switch for the corresponding circuit. The
required circuit breakers are included in the installation parts kit supplied
with the shelves, and therefore their current rating is in accordance with the
order requirements. The CB rating installed in the RAP-4B for feeding a
single shelf is 35 A maximum. The total power that can be provided by the
RAP-4B is up to 4 x 1.1 kW (maximum total power 4.4 kW).
The following figure shows the front panel of the RAP-4B, and the table lists
the functions of the front panel components corresponding to the figure callout
numbers.
The RAP-4B alarm connectors are located on its circuit board, as shown in the
following figure. The table lists the connector functions. The index numbers in
the table correspond to those in the figure.
RAP-BG
The RAP-BG is a DC power distribution panel for BG shelves installed in
racks. It distributes power for up to four BroadGate Product Line shelves
installed on the same rack. The nominal DC power voltage is -48 VDC, -60
VDC, or 24 VDC. Since 9200 Series shelves can use redundant power sources,
the RAP-BG supports connection to two separate DC power circuits.
Each DC power circuit of each shelf is protected by a circuit breaker, which
also serves as a power on/off switch for the corresponding circuit. The required
circuit breakers are included in the installation parts kit supplied with the
BroadGate Product Line shelves, and therefore their current rating is in
accordance with the order requirements. The maximum current that can be
supplied to a shelf fed from the RAP-BG is 16A.
The circuit breakers are installed during the RAP-BG installation. To prevent
accidental changing of a circuit breaker state, the circuit breakers can be
reached only after opening the front cover of the RAP-BG. The circuit breaker
state (ON or OFF) can be seen through translucent covers.
The following figure shows the front panel of the RAP-BG, and the table lists
the functions of the front panel components as indicated by the figure callouts.
xRAP-100
The xRAP-100 is a power distribution and alarm panel for BG shelves installed
in racks. The xRAP-100 performs the following main functions:
Power distribution for up to four BG shelves: The nominal DC power
voltage is -48 VDC or -60 VDC. Since BG shelves can use redundant
power sources, the xRAP-100 supports connection to two separate DC
power circuits. The internal circuits of the xRAP-100 are powered
whenever at least one power source is connected. The presence of DC
power within the xRAP-100 is indicated by a POWER ON indicator.
Each DC power circuit of each shelf is protected by a circuit breaker, which
also serves as a power ON/OFF switch for the corresponding circuit. The
required circuit breakers are included in the installation parts kit supplied
with the BG shelves, and therefore their current rating is in accordance with
the order requirements. The 5-pin high power connector supplies power to
one shelf. The 3-pin connector supplies power to three shelves.
The xRAP-100 is designed to support one high powered shelf and three
regular shelves, or four regular shelves.
The circuit breakers are installed during the xRAP-100 installation. To
prevent accidental changing of a circuit breaker state, the circuit breakers
can be reached only after opening the front cover of the xRAP-100. The
circuit breaker state (ON or OFF) can be seen through translucent covers.
Bay alarm indications: The xRAP-100 includes four alarm indicators, one
for each alarm severity. When alarms of different severities are received
simultaneously, the different alarm indications light simultaneously.
A buzzer is activated whenever a Major or Critical alarm is present in BG
shelves installed in the rack.
Connection of alarms from up to four BG shelves, each shelf with a
maximum of four alarm inputs and two alarm outputs.
The following figure shows the front panel of the xRAP-100, and the table lists
the functions of the front panel components as indicated by the figure callouts.
The xRAP-100 connectors are located on its circuit board, as shown in the
following figure. The table lists the connector functions. The index numbers in
the table correspond to those in the figure.
ICP_MCP30
Due to limited space on the MCP30 or MCP64 panel, a single connector is
placed on the MCP30 or MCP64 front panel for the following auxiliary
interfaces: External Alarms, RS-232, orderwire, and V.11. If none of these
interfaces is used in your application, there is no need to install the
ICP_MCP30. If only an External Alarms interface is used in your application,
there is no need to install the ICP_MCP30. Instead, you can use a special alarm
cable provided by ECI Telecom to lead only the External Alarms interface.
Otherwise, the ICP_MCP30 should be configured to distribute the concentrated
Auxiliary connector into dedicated connectors for each function.
The ICP_MCP30 is connected to the MCP30 or MCP64 using a back-to-back
cable.
The following figure shows the ICP_MCP30.
The front panel of the ICP_MCP30 includes the interfaces described in the
following table.
SM_10E ICPs
To simplify installation and connection to customer termination equipment,
three types of interconnection panels (ICPs) were developed. The ICP is
connected to the SM_10E module using a special cable that spreads the
condensed cable to connector types commonly used for each service. ICP types
are described in the following table. The following figures show each ICP type.
The front panel of the ICP-VF includes the interfaces described in the
following table.
The front panel of the ICP-V24 includes the interfaces described in the
following table.
The front panel of the ICP-V24F includes the interfaces described in the
following table.
The front panel of the ICP-V35 includes the interfaces described in the
following table.
The front panel of the ICP_V11_V24 includes the interfaces described in the
following table.
AC_CONV_UNIT
The AC_CONV_UNIT is an AC power shelf that can be mounted separately
on the rack. It performs the following functions:
Converts AC power to DC power for the BroadGate Product LineB
Filters input for the entire BroadGate Product LineB shelf
Provides backup for AC power
The following figure shows the AC_CONV_UNIT.
AC_CONV_MODULE
The AC_CONV_MODULE is an AC power module that can be plugged into
the AC_CONV_ UNIT. It performs the following functions:
Converts AC power to DC power for the BroadGate Product LineB
Filters input for the entire BroadGate Product LineB shelf
The following figure shows the AC_CONV_MODULE.
All fiber connections are made on a swing-out tray that opens to the right at 90°
and houses the splicing trays, optical adapter panels, and the fiber support.
Left-side tray opening is available per order. The swing-out tray enables quick
and easy access to all internal parts for connection or maintenance activities.
The fiber connections are protected by a front cover, which latches to the
assembly and prevents unintended disconnection of fibers.
Optical terminal fibers can enter the ODF from the right or left side and be
connected to the optical adapters from one side. Pigtails connect to the adapters
from the other side. Excess length of pigtails and patch cords are threaded on a
fiber support that maintains the minimum bend radius to prevent fiber breaks.
A durable and robust tube leads the external fibers cable to the swing-out tray
and protects them from breaks. The adapters are arranged on panels in groups
of four or two (depending on the total number of ports). A large space between
the adapters enables easy access to each individual fiber and quick
reconfiguration.
A two-position moving tray provides easy access to the fibers for management
or maintenance purposes.
xDDF-21
The PME1_21 supports only balanced E1s directly from its connectors. For
unbalanced E1s, an external DDF with E1 balanced-to-unbalanced conversion
must be configured.
When unbalanced 75 Ω interfaces are required, the xDDF-21 patch panel
enables connection and conversion of these interfaces to the balanced 120 Ω
interfaces of the PME1_21.
The xDDF-21 is 1U high and can be installed in ETSI A and ETSI B racks, as
well as in 19” racks. It has a capacity of 21 E1 lines.
The following figure shows a general view of the patch panel. The channel
numbers of the various connectors are marked on the patch panel, and the
inside of the cover contains a label for cable identification (illustrated in the
following figure). The customer’s cables are connected to the connectors inside
the patch panel, while the cable leading from the PME1_21 connector is
connected to the SCSI connectors at the rear of the xDDF-21. A special split
cable is available to convert the output from the PME1_21 to SCSI connector
pairs at the back of the xDDF-21.
The xDDF-21 can be supplied with BT43, DIN1.6/5.6, or BNC connectors for
connecting to the customer’s traffic cables.
Cables
The BG product line is supplied with a number of cables, as described in the
following table.

Overview
This chapter presents the terms used to describe SDH network topologies. As
the topology of networks is determined by communication requirements, the
actual topology of any practical network is often a combination of several basic
topologies.
Because of the flexible, fine granularity of their cross-connect matrix, BG-20,
BG-30 and BG-64 shelves can support any network topology. Moreover, they
can easily adapt to changing network topologies, as the customer’s needs
evolve.
Point-to-Point Topology
A point-to-point topology is usually used to connect a terminal multiplexer
(TM) to an access node with an ADM.
The link requires two fibers. An additional set of fibers can be used for
protection, which can be implemented using SNCP or MSP 1+1.
Ring Topology
The ring topology is the basic topology for reliable SDH networks. The ring
provides two propagation directions, thus providing a redundant path for
recovery from the failure of any single segment.
Multiring Topology
The multiring topology consists of several rings that interconnect at certain
nodes. The main ring thus provides connectivity among the secondary rings.
Applications include metro and resilient backhaul networks.
When a secondary ring (for example, the top ring) joins the main ring at two
different nodes, it can provide additional protection paths.
Mesh Topology
The mesh topology consists of nodes interconnected by many point-to-point
links. This provides dense connectivity among the nodes.

Overview
The BroadGate Product Line supports various high-reliability traffic protection
mechanisms, including SDH Path/Circuit Protection Schemes and MSP 1+1 in
SDH level. Moreover, for Ethernet traffic, the BroadGate Product Line
supports LCAS-based protection. Collectively, these BroadGate Product Line
proven redundancy mechanisms ensure the complete integrity of all traffic
transfers.
SNCP
SNCP provides independent trail protection for individual subnetworks
connected to the BroadGate Product Line platforms. Combined with the
system’s drop-and-continue capability, SNCP is a powerful defense against
multifailure conditions in a mesh topology. By integrating SNCP into the
BroadGate Product Line, operators achieve superior traffic availability figures.
Therefore, SNCP is extremely important for leased lines or other traffic
requiring superior SLA availability.
The BroadGate Product Line supports both SNCP/N and SNCP/I at any VC
level (VC-4, VC-3, VC-12). The SNCP mode can be configured through the
EMS-BGF/LCT-BGF per VC. The BroadGate Product Line enables automatic
SNCP switching, without operator intervention or path redefinition. The
BroadGate Product Line can support path protection even when the MXC20,
MCP30, or MCP64 fails or is out. The result is exceptionally fast protection
switching in less than 30 msec, with typical switching taking only a few
milliseconds. Protection switching is performed via the cross-connect matrix in
the MXC20, XIO30, or XIO64 cards.
MSP 1+1
The BroadGate Product Line provides unidirectional and bidirectional Linear
Multiple Section Protection (MSP 1+1). The MSP 1+1 scheme is designed to
protect single optical links, including fibers and SFP modules. This type of
protection is most suitable for appendage TM/star links for providing four-fiber
protection in chain topologies.
The BG-20 can support the following MSP 1+1 groups of STM-1/4 interfaces:
Ant two STM-1 interfaces in the BG-20B and BG-20E shelf (MXC-20,
SMD1/SMD1H, S1_4)
Any two STM-4 interfaces in the BG-20B shelf (MXC-20,
OMS4B/OMS4H)
The BG-30 and BG-64 enable both unidirectional and bidirectional automatic
MSP 1+1 switching, without operator intervention or path redefinition. The
BG-30/BG-64 can support unidirectional MSP 1+1 protection even when the
MCP30/MCP64 fails or is out. To support bidirectional MSP 1+1 protection,
the MCP30/MCP64 is needed. MSP1+1 protection switching is performed via
the cross-connect matrix in the XIO30/XIO64 cards.
The BG-30 can support a MSP 1+1 group of two STM-1/4/16 interfaces, as
follows:
Any two STM-1 interfaces of XIO30, SMD1B, S1_4, SMQ1&4
Any two STM-4 interfaces of XIO30, SMS4, SMD4, SMQ1&4, S4_1
Any two STM-16 interfaces of XIO30, SMS16
The BG-64 can support MSP 1+1 group of any two STM-1/4/16/64 interfaces,
as follows:
Any two STM-1 interfaces of SMQ1&4;
Any two STM-4 interfaces of SMQ1&4
Any two STM-16 interfaces of SMS16
Two STM-64 interfaces of XIO64
The following figure shows a four-fiber star BroadGate Product Line with all
links protected. This ensures uninterrupted service even in the case of a double
fault. The BroadGate Product Line automatically performs MSP switching
within 50 msec.
MS-SPRing
In addition to SNCP protection that may also be implemented in mesh
topologies, BG supports MS-SPRing that provides bandwidth advantages for
selected ring-based traffic patterns.
Two-fiber MS-SPRing supports any 2.5 Gbps rings closed by BG via the
XIO30_16/XIO16_4 card or 10Gbps rings closed by BG via XIO64 card, in
compliance with applicable ITU T standards. This is fully automatic and
performed in less than 50 msec.
MS-SPRing can support LO traffic arriving at the nodes in the same way it
does HO traffic. LO traffic support on MS-SPRing is unique to BG, as it is a
genuine MSPP.
In MS-SPRing modes, the STM-n signal is divided into working and protection
capacity per MS. In case of a failure in one MS of the ring, the protection
capacity loops back the affected traffic at both ends of the faulty MS. BG
supports the full squelching protocol to prevent traffic misconnections in cases
of failure at isolated nodes. Trails to be dropped at such nodes are muted to
prevent their being delivered to the wrong destination.
MS-SPRing is particularly beneficial in ring applications with uniform or
adjacent traffic patterns, as it offers significant capacity advantages compared
to other protection schemes.
The following figure shows a BG in a two-fiber MS-SPRing. In this
configuration, two fibers are connected between each site. Each fiber delivers
50% of the active and 50% of the shared protection traffic. For example, in an
STM-16 ring, eight VC-4s are active and eight VC-4s are reserved for shared
protection.
In the event of a fiber cut between sites A and D, traffic is transported through
sites B and C on the black portion of the counterclockwise fiber. The switch in
traffic is triggered by the APS protocol that transmits control signals over the
K1 and K2 bytes in the fiber from site D to site A.
Extra traffic capability is also supported, enabling users to use the protecting
VC-4s to carry extra traffic that is dropped in case of a failure in the protected
VC-4s. Thus, the total capacity of the ring is used, provided there are no
network failures. The extra traffic itself is, of course, not protected.
Higher Link Protection - Link aggregation prevents the failure of any single
interface from leading to a disruption of the communications between the
interconnected platforms. The loss of a link within an aggregation reduces the
available capacity but the connection is maintained and the data flow is not
interrupted.
The BG PL supports up to seven logical links. Each single logical link is
composed up to four physical links (Ethernet LAN or EoS WAN ports). When
one (or more) physical link fails, the failed link capacity is removed until that
link recovers. The network continues to function correctly without the failed
link.
LAG is available for both Ethernet (LAN ports) and EoS (WAN ports). The
following figure illustrates the LAG approach. Two variations are displayed,
one for Ethernet ports and one for EoS WAN ports.
Link members are added and removed through the network management
system.
Higher Link Capacity - The performance is improved because the capacity of
an aggregated link is higher than each individual link alone. Standard LAN
technology provides data rates of 10 Mb/s, 100 Mb/s, 1000 Mb/s and 10GE.
Link Aggregation can fill the gaps of these available data rates when an
intermediate performance level is more appropriate. If a higher capacity than
1000 Mb/s is needed, the user can group several 1000 Mb/s interfaces adapters
together to form a high speed connection.
Links Load Balancing - Link Aggregation also provides load balancing where
the processing and communications activity is distributed across several links
in a trunk so that no single link is overwhelmed. The BG PL supports fixed
load-sharing algorithm of “MAC DA XOR MAC SA”, it’s automatically
configured (the user doesn’t need to configure the option of load-sharing
algorithm).
