NOTE
1.Class C environment (poor): In the environment close to pollution sources and oceans, outdoor cabinets
with heat exchangers or air conditioners must be used to effectively isolate the device environment from the
atmosphere environment close to oceans or pollution sources. In the outdoor environment far away from
pollution sources and oceans, outdoor cabinets, especially those with heat exchangers or air
conditioners, must be used to improve security. Direct-ventilation cabinets can be used in this environment,
with ATN devices being installed far away from the air intake vents of the cabinets.)
2.Class B environment (common): In an indoor environment, network cabinets can be used to minimize
humidity risks. The measures applicable to a Class C environment can be used for a Class B
environment, but the measures applicable to a Class B environment cannot be used for a Class C
environment.

Precautions
NOTE

This document provides simple and distinctive guidelines for quick hardware installation of the ATN
905&910C&950B&950C&980B.
Based on the height of a device, the ATN 910C-A&910C-B&910C-D&910C-F&910C-G are considered 1 U
devices, and the ATN 950B&950C are considered 2 U devices, and the ATN 980B is considered 3.5 U
device. 1 U = 44.45 mm (1.75 in.)
As the installation methods are similar, the fixed ATN910C-A is used as an example for the 1 U device, the
board-inserted ATN 950B is used as an example for the 2 U device, and the board-inserted ATN 980C is
used as an example for the 3.5 U device. The installation differences are specially described in this
document.
This document does not describe pre-delivery assembly. This document only describes procedures for
onsite installation.
NOTE
ATN can be installed in a standard 21-inch or 19-inch cabinet. Huawei A63B cabinet is recommended. If
you purchase a cabinet by yourself, ensure that the cabinet meets the following requirements:
1.19- or 21-inch cabinet with a depth of greater than or equal to 300 mm.
2.The cabling space in front of the cabinet complies with the cabling space requirements of boards.
Note:If a board requires optical modules or attenuators with a puller, ensure that sufficient space is
available for routing optical fibers. It is recommended that the distance between the cabinet door and the
front panel of the board be greater than or equal to 120 mm (4.72 in.) in the case of a convex door or open
rack.
3.The device is designed with left-to-right airflow. Therefore, leave a minimum space of 75 mm on both the
left and right sides of the cabinet to ensure good ventilation.
4.The porosity of each cabinet door must be greater than 50%, meeting heat dissipation requirements of
devices.
5.The cabinet has installation accessories, such as guide rails, floating nuts, and screws.
6.The cabinet has a ground terminal to connect to the device.
7.The cabinet has a cable outlet on the top or at the bottom for overhead or underfloor cabling.
8.For cabinets with left-to-right air channels, such as open racks, installing cabinets side by side may
cause cascaded heating. Therefore, you are advised not to install cabinets with left-to-right air channels
side by side. If side-by-side installation cannot be avoided, it is recommended that the distance between
cabinets be at least 500 mm (19.67 in.).

CAUTION
Electrostatic Discharge

Wear ESD gloves or Antistatic Wrist Strap prior to contact with

the device or before handling the plug-boards, boards, and IC
chips to prevent damage to sensitive components caused by
electrostatic discharge from the human body.

CAUTION
Bundling cables

Binding intervals between cable ties or optical fiber binding straps inside the cabinet cannot
exceed 250 mm.
CAUTION
Pre-Installation Check
Verify that the equipment room, power supply, ground cables, and optical cables are ready for installation.
Start the installation according to the engineering design documents after confirming that conditions are met.
Refer to the Installation Guide for information about specific operation requirements and technical
specifications.

Checking Cable Connectivity
a Checking Connectivity of E1 Cables

NM center

Loopback
Transmission
network

1. A hardware installation engineer powers on the device, sets up optical paths, and informs a
software commissioning engineer in the network management (NM) center that the device is
powered on and optical paths are set up.

2. The software commissioning engineer searches for and creates NEs to ensure that the device
can be managed remotely. Then, the software commissioning engineer configures data for the site
to ensure that the device is functioning properly and alarm and performance data can be reported.

3. The software commissioning engineer sets outloops for E1 ports on the NMS, and instructs the
hardware installation engineer to test the bit error rate (BER) using a BER tester.
• If no bit errors occur or loss of signal (LOS) signals are displayed, the E1 cables are normal.
• If bit errors occur or LOS signals are displayed, check whether the 2 Mbit/s cables are
incorrectly connected or poor soldering occurs.

NOTE
To check the connectivity of the network cable, you can also adopt the approach of looping back the data
ports (applicable to the data ports on two sets of device that is powered on). That is, connect the two data
ports with the network cable. If the LINK indicator is on, it indicates that the network cable is normal.

18
Installation Checklist

No. Item

1 The chassis are positioned in the proper place as prescribed by the engineering design specific to the site.
When the chassis is installed in a 19-inch cabinet, make sure that the chassis does not come into contact
the front door and that the cables are not pressed against the front door when it is closed.

2 Each chassis component does not have any paint drop, damage, or stain. Otherwise, re-paint or clean the
component.

3 When a board is inserted into the chassis, the screws on the front panel of the board are tightened.

4 Vacant slots in the chassis are covered with filler panels.

5 Cables are routed according to the engineering design, facilitating future maintenance and expansion.

6 Cables are not damaged or broken, and there are not any joints on the cable.

7 Cables are tested for connectivity.

8 Cables are bundled closely with proper force. The spacing between the cable ties is even. After the cable
ties are fixed, the remaining part is trimmed with no burrs.

9 Signal cables are routed correctly.

10 Cables outside the cabinet are routed as follows:

• Cables are laid neatly without crossing.
• If a cabling ladder is used, the cables should be bound onto the ladder beam neatly. If the cabling frame
is 0.8 m (31.5 in.) or higher than the cabinet top, a cabling ladder must be available on the cabinet top to
support the cables and to ease stress.

11 The cable turns are smooth and have a big bending radius.

12 Cable labels are marked correctly and firmly attached. They are aligned and face to the same direction.
The labels need to be placed two centimeters away from the connectors.

13 The power cable and grounding cable are routed separately from the signal cables.

14 Protective caps are placed on unused cable connectors for protection.

15 The protective tube for fiber jumpers is led into the cabinet and the tube inside the cabinet is about 10 cm
(3.94 in.). If the cut end of the tube has sharp edges, wrap it using insulation tape.

16 The cut end of the protective tube for fiber jumpers is smooth and without sharp edges. If the cut end is
not smooth, wrap it using insulation tape.

17 The fiber jumpers are not tightly bound and are able to moved freely in the cable tie.

18 The connecting points of fiber jumpers are free from dust. The unused fiber connectors and optical
interfaces are protected by protective caps or plugs.

OUT port

NOTE
• To check tail fiber connection, you need to check the deviation of the optical power between an optical interface on
the board and the peer interface on the ODF. If the optical power meter reads a value less than or equal to 1 dB, it
indicates that the tail fiber connection is correct. Otherwise, check the fiber.

• If the fiber is connected through a flange, the deviation should be less than 2 dB.

• When using an optical power meter during a test, you are recommended to record the launched optical power of
each optical interface and check whether the launched optical power is normal.

• Consult the project supervisor or software engineer and determine whether it is necessary to test the received
optical power by using an optical power meter, with an intention to check whether the received optical power is
normal.

3 Checking Optical Power
The following table describes comparison between the transmit optical power of 50 Gbps optical modules and
damaged optical power threshold at the receive end:
Optical Maximum Average Minimum Average Damaged Optical Description
Module Type Transmit Optical Transmit Optical Power Threshold at
Power Power the Receive End

The damaged optical power

50GBASE-LR threshold is greater than the
4.2 -4.5 5.2
(10km) maximum average transmit optical
power, posting low self-loop risks.

The damaged optical power

threshold is 9dBm lower than the
maximum average transmit optical
50GBASE-ER power and 2.8dBm lower than the
6.6 0.4 -2.4
(40km) minimum average transmit optical
power, posing high self-loop risks.
In this case, an optical attenuator
must be configured for self-loop.

For applications of the 50 Gbps optical module supporting a distance of 40 km:

1. To ensure that the optical module runs stably for a long time, adjust the receive optical power of the optical module to
a value lower than -4 dB. According to the IEEE 802.3 standard, if the receive optical power of the optical module
exceeds -2.3 dB, the optical module may be permanently damaged.
2. Before connecting to the optical module, use an optical power meter to measure the receive optical power (P). If P is
less than -4 dB, the optical module can be directly connected. If P is greater than -4 dB, add an optical attenuator at
the receive end to ensure that the receive optical power is less than -4 dB. Alternatively, add an optical attenuator (no
less than 10 dB is recommended) before the interconnection, and then adjust the optical attenuator based on the site
requirements to prevent the optical module from being damaged.
3. If a loopback occurs on the pigtail of the optical module or the optical module is connected for a short distance, an
optical attenuator must be added. It is recommended that the optical attenuator be no less than 10 dB.

4 Checking Optical Link

Since the 50G/200G optical module link uses the PAM4 encoding technology, the link is more sensitive to multipath
reflection interference of signals. If the fiber link connector, fiber section, or fiber splicing surface is dirty, optical signals are
reflected back and forth on the fiber link, causing interference due to co-channel noise on the receive side. As a result, the
optical link is unstable or intermittently disconnected.
Before installing the 50G/200G optical module, you are advised to use an OTDR meter to check the optical link. The check
method is as follows:

fibers.

Because the transmit optical power of the OTDR meter is much higher than the damaged optical power threshold at the
receive end, the optical fiber must be removed from the optical module when the OTDR meter is used to test the optical
path quality.

3 E1 Cable Routing Requirements and Precautions

NOTE
The cable routing requirements apply to 2 U-height ATN devices.

Install a cable guiding frame for layered E1 cable routing. The cables at each layer
must flush with the board panel where the cables reside.

Do not tightly bind cables in the cable guiding frame and provide sufficient slack to
facilitate cable move.

Add the E1 cable bending radius to eliminate the vertical stress. Bind E1 cables to the
ATN device rack tightly to ensure long-term reliability.

NOTE

• To remove or install a board on the right, first remove the left E1 cables from the cable
manager to provide sufficient operating space. After the operation is complete, re-place
the left E1 cables to the cable manager.
• The cabling direction of the ATN 950D device is different. Therefore, you need to
remove the right E1 cables from the cable tray, and then remove the left board. After
the operation is complete, re-insert the right E1 cables to the cable tray.

• To remove or install an optical fiber or network cable on the board between two E1
boards, using a fiber extractor is recommended.
