EL GRITO - EDWARD MUNCH

“El grito” is one of the most famous artworks in the world. It’s
internationally known.
Edward Munch was an artist from the 19th century. He was born in Norway
in 1863. Was a painter that wanted to reflect the anguish, fear, illness,
death… He was part of German Impressionism. Impressionism was a
vanguardism movement born in Germany in the 20th century. Is a
deformation of reality to express it in a more subjective way. It wants to
reflect feelings and emotions. Going back to Edward, he painted about the
perfect men and his existential suffering. He’s style was very personal and
expressive, not naturalist, and that catched the attention of the experts.
So, now that you know who was Edward Munch, I’m going to talk about his
most famous artwork.
El grito was painted over Oil and temple. It has a dimensions of 91cm x
74cm. It has 4 versions. Munch painted the first one in 1893. He didn’t feel
well with this one, so he painted another one, and this situation was
repeated 4 times. Munch was inspired by an sculpture he saw in the Expo
of Paris, called “La Momia Peruana”, and also in some artworks of Van
Ghog.
In his artpiece, he wanted to paint the despair, about a very tormented life,
about his strict father, his dead mother, his brothers, the bipolarity and the
depression.
We can perfectly see this in the expression that the figure has.
If we got into details, we can see a couple in the back, some boats and
something like a bridge, that crosses over the river.
This artwork was stealed 2 times, the last one in 2004, that was recovered
in 2006.
Now you can see it in the Oslo Art Galery.
