JOB SPECIFICATION
Post Depute Head Teacher

Responsible to Head Teacher
Job Purpose The role of the Depute Head Teacher is to assist and, where necessary, to
deputise for the Head Teacher in the conduct of the school affairs. The outline
duties for the Head Teacher are set out in Annex B of the agreement “A Teaching
Profession for the 21st Century” The Depute Head Teacher has a responsibility to
support and sustain a collegiate Senior Management team – contributing to the
formulation and implementation of the school’s vision and aims together with
evaluation of its practice. The Depute Head Teacher has a significant duty of
care to staff and pupils.
Key Responsibilities The Depute Head Teacher shall be directly accountable to the Head Teacher for
the discharge of duties and for overall performance.
Generic duties of the • Share a collective responsibility for the leadership, good management
post and strategic direction of the school.
• Manage and develop the school curriculum.
• Collate and manage data with HT
• Contribute to school policy and practice in all areas of management.
• Model good teaching and promote best practice across the school.
• Discharge Health and safety responsibilities commensurate with the post.
• Evaluate the service that the school is giving to its pupils and ensure that
a culture of self evaluation exists at all levels in the school.
• Curriculum innovation and piloting Curriculum for Excellence Initiatives
and progressions.
• Undertake development and review and monitoring of staff linked to the
monitoring of learning and achievement and self- evaluation process with
agreed staff. (allocated annually)

Allocation of Duties • The DHT will work under the direction of the Head Teacher in accordance
with the policies of the school, the Care and Learning Service and
Highland Council. The Head Teacher will determine specific areas of
responsibility and management duties which may vary from time to time
without making significant changes to the level of responsibility entailed.
Such variations area a common occurrence and would not normally justify
re-job sizing. As a result of such variations, it may be necessary to
update this job specification from time to time. If, following consultation
and discussion with the Head Teacher, the post holder is dissatisfied with
any such variations, the post holder has the right to pursue the matter via
the Council’s Grievance Procedures. All duties must be capable of being
undertaken within contractual time, having regard to workload.
