JOB DESCRIPTIONS

JUNIOR/SENIOR SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The principal will give leadership to establishing and maintaining an educational environment

conducive to meeting educational needs and district and community standards. The principal provides

instructional leadership in curriculum and instruction and is responsible for the evaluation and

supervision of all instructionally related staff members assigned to the building. He/she administers the

school in accordance with the policies of the Board of Education. The principal is responsible for all

school activities and building operations. The principal assures the appropriate standards of behavior of

the students and staff in the building and on the grounds. He/she is responsible for the in service of all

staff within the building excluding custodians and food service personnel. The principal provides

necessary communication to the parents of the students regarding the progress of their children and the

general activities of the school. The principal is responsible for the school’s building maintenance and

security. She shall act as the chief administrative officer for their own school buildings and grounds. She

shall be responsible for and shall have authority over the actions of students, certified and support staff

employees, visitors and persons hired to perform special tasks. To plan, implement, administer, and

evaluate programs, activities, projects and students and staff associated with the Jr./Sr. High School.

The Principal shall keep the School Administrator informed of activities in their building by whatever

means the School Administrator deems appropriate.

ACADEMIC HEADS

In charge of the overall program and planning of the department. Monitors learning

plans of the day and must be highly skilled classroom practitioners and undertake leadership and
management roles commensurate with their salary range. The role the academic head is to improve the

skill, knowledge and performance of the teaching workforce in Richmindale School and to improve the

curriculum program of a school. Typically responsible for coordinating a number of staff to achieve

improvements in teaching and learning which may involve the coordination and professional support of

colleagues through modelling, collaborating and coaching and using processes that develop knowledge,

practice and professional engagement in others. They are expected to lead and manage a significant

area or function within the school with a high degree of independence to ensure the effective

development, provision and evaluation of the school’s education program. They will be expected to

make a significant contribution to policy development relating to teaching and learning in the school. A

department head has a direct impact and influence on the achievement of the school goals. They are

usually responsible for the implementation of one or more priorities contained in the school strategic

plan.

CLASSROOM TEACHERS/LEARNING SPECIALISTS

They should be highly skilled classroom practitioners who continue to spend the majority of

their time in the classroom delivering high-quality teaching and learning and have a range of

responsibilities related to their expertise, including teaching demonstration lessons, observing and

providing feedback to other teachers and facilitating school-based professional learning. Learning

Specialists are expected to have deep knowledge and expertise in high quality teaching and learning in

delivering improved achievement, engagement and wellbeing for students. The role of the Learning

Specialist will be to model excellence in teaching and learning through demonstration lessons, and

mentoring and coaching teachers in improving the skill, knowledge and effectiveness of the teaching

workforce. The Learning Specialist role is aimed at building excellence in teaching and learning within

the Teaching Service.


DEPARTMENT SECRETARY/OFFICE PERSONNEL

Secretaries and administrators help to keep an organisation running

smoothly, taking care of the administrative and organizational tasks that

make the organization function. The job title ‘administrator’ and ‘secretary’

can be used interchangeably to describe the same role, or ‘secretary’ can be

another, more old-fashioned name for a personal assistant or executive

assistant.

Typical responsibilities of the job include:

 answering calls, taking messages and handling correspondence


 maintaining diaries and arranging appointments
 typing, preparing and collating reports
 filing
 organising and servicing meetings (producing agendas and taking minutes)
 managing databases
 prioritising workloads
 implementing new procedures and administrative systems
 liaising with relevant organisations and clients
 coordinating mail-shots and similar publicity tasks
 logging or processing bills or expenses
 acting as a receptionist and/or meeting and greeting clients
 if more senior, recruiting, training and supervising junior staff
