Residential HVAC Project

Team Project: Residential HVAC Design

We’ve covered many aspects of HVAC design. This project will wrap all of those together into
a single-zone HVAC system.
Construction drawings for a single family home are provided for students to use in this project.
Dimensions, window locations, wall construction, and other construction details are provided in
the set of prints. Teams of two students (one group of one or three allowed with odd numbers)
will perform the following tasks to complete the HVAC design for the building.
1. Determine a location for your building. This is for winter and summer design
considerations. For this portion, a metro area is sufficient (i.e. Phoenix, AZ, Portland,
OR, Fairbanks, AK, etc.).
2. Choose an orientation for your building. Which way is north?
3. Calculate the winter heat loss for each room in the building. Determine the total heat loss
for the building.
4. Choose diffusers and locations for each room. Size supply ductwork for each diffuser.
5. Locate the duct work for the supply trunk and the return trunk.
6. Prepare a Revit model with the ductwork included. You do not need to model the wall
framing, etc. for this portion.
7. Select a furnace for the residence which meets the heat loss and pressure/flow
requirements.
8. Calculate the instantaneous heat gain for each room throughout the day.
9. Determine the total cooling load over the day.
10. Select a cooling system for the residence which meets the cooling load.
11. Verify the air distribution for cooling operation.
12. Estimate the energy use for the building for a year.
13. Prepare a written report that communicates the project process and results.
Due Dates and Grade Breakdown
The following deliverables are included in the scope of this project. The dates and or point
values may adjust slightly, but it should be close to this schedule. Any changes will be
announced in class and on Canvas. Detailed rubrics will be provided on Canvas as dates
approach.
