Whathappenswhenyoufalloff
theearth’sedge?
IsthereapromiseinawakeningtowhatItrulyam?Isthere
somethingIcangetoutofthisthatwillimprovemylife?
Willitmakemeabetterandmoresuccessfulperson?In
short:Whatwillitbeliketoliveanawakenedlife?These
seemperfectlyreasonablequestions,andtheyfrequently
comeupduringthesearch.
Formany,thehopeforabetterlifeisthecoremotiva-
tiontoinvestsoheavilyinthisquest.Thereis,however,a
problemwiththesequestionsthatpreventsadirectanswer,
andthatisthattheyoriginatefromthelimitedperspective
theseekerwantstotranscend.Thequestionsmaysound
reasonable,buttheyareintrinsicallyflawed.
Letmegiveyouaconcreteexample.Beforeweknew
thattheearthwasround,thequestionofwhereonewould
endupafterfallingoffitsedgewasperfectlyreasonable.
Fromourcurrentperspective,however,thequestionmakes
nosense.Ifyouweretogobackintime,youcouldnot
provideasimpleanswer,butwouldhavetoexplainthat
theearthis,infact,roundandfallingoffitisnotpossible.
This, of course, would go against the common sense of
thequestioner,whowouldpointtothehorizonandinsist
thathecouldclearlyseewheretheearthended.Asking
thequestionertoimaginetheperspectiveofanastronaut

would probably be seen as a conceptual abstraction to
avoid the real issue, namely: ‘What happens when you
fallofftheearth’sedge?’Thatbeingsaid,I’mgoingtotell
youwhatyouwillgetoutofenlightenment.Iftheanswer
isinitiallydisappointing,don’tgiveup.Readonandsee
ifyoucometotheplacewheredisappointmentchanges
intoclarity.
Soherewego:Theansweristhatyouwillgetnothing
outofitbecauseenlightenmentistherealizationthatthere
isnoyoutogetenlightened;thatyoursenseofseparation
andindividualityisanillusion.Thisreplywillmostlikely
goagainstyourdirectexperience.Youmighthavelearned
thatyouarepartofanongoingprocessinwhichthefittest
willsurviveandthatyouhavetopassonyourgenestothe
nextgenerationordietrying.Youmayalsobelievethat
theartoflivingisinimprovingyourselfandyourlife’s
circumstances.Ifyou’repoorandhungry,aroofoveryour
headandamealadaymaydoitforyou.Ifyou’relucky
enough to live in a situation where your basic survival
needsarecovered,youwillmostlikelypursuehappiness
andfulfillmentviarelationships,theacquisitionofmaterial
goods,andsocialstatus.
When this is not enough you might become what is
knownasaseeker.Aseekerissomeonewhofeelsthatthe
so-calledmaterialworldcannotdelivertrueandlasting
contentment and that an inner dimension needs to be
exploredtofindpeace,enlightenment,orSelf-realization.
Asaseekeryou’llperhapstrypsychotherapy,rebirthing,
gettingintouchwithyourinnerchild,pastliferegression
therapy, yoga, transcendental meditation, or one of the
other techniques believed to lead to lasting fulfillment
andhappiness.Suchmethodsmayindeeddeliverresults

thatyoucanexperienceasimprovingorenrichingyour
life. However, you’ll probably discover that after some
timetheoriginaleuphoriawearsoff.Youcometorealize
thatexperiencesandstatesofmindarealwaystemporary.
Afterthisrecognition,manyseekersconsidertheso-called
non-dualapproachtoSelf-realizationorenlightenment.
Non-duality is a general term that covers several
–mostlyeastern–schoolsofthought,whichpointtothe
singlesourcebeforeandbeyondalltemporalexperiences
and apparent diversity. While reading texts from non-
dualsystemssuchasZen,Advaita,Taoism,orDzogchen,
youwillfindtheaffirmationthatSelf-realizationhasno
promiseotherthantoreleaseyoufromyourbeliefina
separateselforego.That’sit.Thedroppingawayofanillu-
sionsimplyrevealingthisasitis,oftensummedupinthe
phrase‘Beforeenlightenmentchopwoodandcarrywater.
Afterenlightenment,chopwoodandcarrywater.’
Theego,whichcertainlydoesnotwanttohearthatit
isanillusion,mayclaimtoacceptthisasaconcept,but
invariablyresistsitsrealization,persistinginthebeliefthat
thecarryingandchoppingthatcome‘after’aresomehow
different.Now,ifthere’snothinginitforme,whywould
Ievenbother?‘Givemesomemotivation,’saystheego;
‘Give me something that makes it worth my while to
pursuethis.’
This way of thinking seems right to us, who are
conditionedtolookforafuturepurposeinwhateveritis
we’redoing.Logicdictatesthatweshouldgainsomething
hereinsteadofmerelyhearingthatwedon’texist.From
this perspective, it gets even worse. Enlightenment not
only shows that your separate identity is an illusion, it
revealsthatsheerpurposelessnessisattheheartofthis

wholecreation.Thissoundsabsurdtothegoal-and-future-
orientedmind;yetIwilltellyouunequivocallythatthe
whole point of this manifestation is nothing other than
thismanifestation.
Realizing this is far from the bleak reality the mind
imaginesittobe.True,thisisofnousetotheego,since
itisaboutfreedomfromtheego,notfreedomfortheego.
Thefinalunderstandingisnottheresultofseeking,but
brings freedom from seeking. It is not about fulfilling
expectations,butaboutbeingfreeofthem.Thereareno
futurerewardsinstore.Thisveryclarityturnsouttobe
itsownreward.LikeZenMasterHakuinexclaimed:
Thisverylandisthepurelotusland,
ThisverybodyisthebodyofBuddha!
Nothingchanges,buteverythingisreleasedfromitscon-
ceptualmold,aswellasfromthepersonwhotriedtofitlife
intothemold.Life’sfreshnessisrecognized;itspresenceis
acknowledged;itsonenessisseen–butbynoone.There
simplyisrecognition,acknowledgment,andseeing.
Allthistextwilldoisremindyouofyourtrueidentity.
Itisnotaboutself-improvementormethods.Itcontains
noseven-step-systemstohelpyoubecomemorerelaxed,
moreloving,ormorefulfilled.Ifthatiswhatyou’relooking
for,thereareplentyofotherbooksandpeoplethatwill
catertoyourneeds.
If you want the truth, you have to look beyond the
concepts of ego and self-improvement, and beyond the
statesofmindyouwouldliketoacquire.Thisbookwill
explore–andattempttopuncture–thebeliefthatyouare
aseparateentity.Itwantstopointatthesourcelesssource

fromwhichallarises,anditasksyoutorememberthat
youarethissource.Oncethisisrecognizedanditisclear
whatyoutrulyare,you’llseethateverythingisexactly
asitshouldbe.Itwillnotallfallmagicallyintoplace.It
alreadyisandalwayshasbeeninplace.
Thisisnotaboutagradualprogressiontoafuturegoal,
butaboutaradicalawakeningtowhatis.Noconditions
havetobefulfilledforthistobecomeclear.Self-realization
canhappenatanytimeforanyone.Therecanbequirky,
irreverent, irritable characters who are certain about
whattheytrulyareandtherecanberelaxed,friendly,
happy people who never even thought about so-called
enlightenment.Calmness,friendliness,andhappinessmay
ormaynotbeorbecomepartofyourdailyexperienceas
aconsequenceofawakening,butatthesametimeitwill
becomeevidentthatthisclarityisnotaboutbeingina
goodmoodallthetime.Youdon’tneedtodoanythingto
‘becomeready’forit.Itwillhappenbyitselfandreveal
thatAwakenessis–andalwayshasbeen–fullypresent.
Itwillshinewhenitshines,anditwillshifttheattention
fromthecontentofAwarenesstoPureAwarenessitself.
This Pure Awareness is what you truly are. When you
thinkyou’renotit,thisthoughtispartofthetemporal
contentofAwarenessandhasnobearingonAwareness
itself. Just let yourself be. Give yourself permission to
beup, down, pissed or delirious. Observe the process
anddon’tgetcaughtinthecontent.Knowyourselfasthe
limitlessfieldofPureAwarenessinwhichthedramaof
lifemerelyarises.
For me this understanding has marked the end of
mysearchandreleasedmefromtheburdenoftryingto
controlmylifeandconstantlyimprovemyself.Itdidnot

setmefree,butshowedthatIamfreedomitself.Itdidnot
givemeanything,buttook‘theme’away.WhatItruly
amiswhatIalwayswas:PureAwareness.Thisistruefor
you,thecat,thebook,andeverythingelse.Tothemind,
thereseemtobeseparateobjects;butinreality,everything
emanatesfromthesameessence.Seeingornotseeingthis
doesnotchangeanything.Everythingsimplyisasitis,
whichisalotlessandinfinitelymorethanIanticipated
ittobe.

scholarandphilosopherwhopublishedhisworkunder
thepseudonymofWeiWuWei(1895–1986),although
he certainly would never have claimed that it was ‘he’
whowroteit.
Tom,Dick,andHarrythinktheyhavewrittenthebooks
thattheysign(orpaintedthepictures,composedthemusic,
built the churches). But they exaggerate. It was a pen
thatdidit,orsomeotherimplement.Theyheldthepen?
Yes,butthehandthatheldthepenwasanimplement
too,andthebrainthatcontrolledthehand.Theywere
intermediaries, instruments, just apparatus. Even the
bestapparatusdoesnotneedapersonalnamelikeTom,
Dick,orHarry.
IfthenamelessbuildersoftheTajMahal,ofChartres,
ofRheims,ofahundredcathedralsymphonies,knewthat
–andavoidedthesolecismofattributingtotheirownegos
theworksthatwerecreatedthroughtheirinstrumentality
– may not even a jotter-down of passing metaphysical
notionsknowitalso?*
Asforme,IwasborninOctoberof1948toapoorcouple
inAmsterdam.Fromanearlyage,Iwasfamiliarizedwith
theideathatlifehasaspiritualdimension,althoughcur-
rentlyInolongermakethedistinctionbetweenspiritual
andnon-spiritual.Psychichealersandclairvoyantswere
partofthecrowdmyparentshungoutwith.Therewere
hand-layingsessions,divinations,andséancestryingto
contact‘theotherworld.’
Someofmyearliestmemoriesof‘spiritual’experiences

gobacktoatimewhenIwasyoungenoughtobeputtobed
whenitwasstilllightoutside.Thecurtainswouldclose,
and a pattern of silver roses printed on a brick-colored
backgroundwouldallowafilteredlightintothebedroom,
creatingtheillusionofdancingcreaturesonthewall.At
certaintimesIwouldlieawakeandthinkabouthowthere
wasnothingbetweentheceilingandme.Ithentriedto
imaginewhatitwouldbelikeiftherewerenoceilingso
thatIcouldlookintouninterruptednothingness.Isoon
noticedthatthislittlegamewouldputmeinaspecialstate.
Asensation,atoncestrangeandpleasant,wouldcomeover
measmymindsurrenderedmoredeeplyintotheimpos-
sibilityofimagining‘nothing.’Whenwewouldgotothe
parkonaclearday,Iwouldtrytogetatthis‘nothing’by
lyingonmybackandstaringintothesky.Always,though,
something–abird,acloud,orsomegrass–wouldenter
myfieldofvision.Closingmyeyesdidn’tworkeither,as
swirlingpatternsseemedtodanceonmyretinaand,at
somepoint,I’dhavetogiveuponthegame.
WhenIwaseightyearsoldmyparentsdivorced,and
mytwoyoungerbrothersandIstayedwithmymother.
InthosedaysinHollanditstillwasnotconsideredproper
forawomantobewithoutahusband.Somepeopletried
tohelp,butmanyothers–neighbors,schoolteachers,and
civilservantsfromtheSocialSecurityOffice–madeus
feeljudged.Bringingupthreeyoungboyswashardon
mymother.Shedidthebestshecould,whilemyfather
wasreluctanttochipin.
Atonepoint,weconvertedtoCatholicism.Thiswasas
muchforthecomfortofreligionasforgettinghelpfromthe
church.Itwasmyfirstbrushwithorganizedreligion,and
Itookaverycriticallookatit.Ihatedgoingtochurch,but

wasintriguedbythereligiousteachingswereceivedatmy
newCatholicschool.Thereseemedtobeanendlesssupply
offascinatingstoriesfromtheBible,butIsoonnoticed
thatmyprobingquestionswerenotalwaysappreciated.
WhomdidthechildrenofAdamandEvemarry?IfGod
isgood,whyistheresomuchinjustice?HowcouldaGod
oflovedestroywholecitiesjustbecausemostofthepeople
inthemdidnotlivebyhiscommandments;andwhydid
hesendpeopletoHelltoburnforeternity?Sometimes
they told me that certain Bible stories where symbolic;
thenatothertimes,they’dinsistthattheBiblehadtobe
takenliterally.
Another mystery was that eating fish on Friday was
consideredtobefasting,whileitwasobviouslyfeasting.
The Friday lunch – served with white wine – was the
highlightoftheweekforthepriestsofourparish.
Welearnedthatallpeoplewereequalinthesightof
God,butthericherpeoplewouldhavereservedplaceswith
softerkneelingcushionsinthefrontrowsofthechurch.It
allseemedconfusing,anditwasclearthatthereweremore
questionsthananswers.Isupposethatbeingintroducedto
thefaithatalateragethantheotherkidsatschoolmade
itmoredifficultformetojustacceptwhatIwastold.This
mademeaseeker,distrustfulofspiritualauthority.
Eventhen,Ibelievedthattheremustbemoretolife
thanmeetstheeye.IbelievedinGod,butcouldnotaccept
whatIwastaughtabouthim.Bytheageoftwelve,Icame
upon an advertisement for a correspondence course in
RajaYoga.Ipersuadedmymothertosignupforit,andwe
startedtoreceiveregularlessonsinthemail.Theteacher
wasaprofessoroforientalstudies.Althoughmuchinhis
textswasbeyondmycomprehension,somethingkeptme

going.TherewerenewwordsandideasaboutGod,the
Self,andlifeasawholethatsoundedmorerealthanthat
whichIwashearingaboutatschool.
AsIgotalittleolder,itbecametimetochoosebetween
continuingschoolandtakingajob.Neitheroptionseemed
appealing.Iwantedtodraworpaintorhaveanadventur-
ouslifeoftravelandexploration.Itwasthesixties,and
Ilearnedtosmokehashish.Iwasstillaminor,andthe
authoritiesthatkeptaneyeonthechildrenofdivorced
parentsdecidedthatIwouldbebetteroffinastatehome
fordifficultchildren.I’msuretheymeantwell,butatthe
timeIdidnotseeitthatway.
InthisplaceImixedwithkidswhowerethereformore
seriousmatters,suchascartheft,burglary,andrape.Iwas
toldthatIwasthereasapreventivemeasure,whilemost
oftheotherswherethereasapunishment.Ifailedtosee
thefairnessinthisandescapedwithoneofthe‘punished
kids’who,evenatthisearlyage,wasaskilledsurvivor.
Heknewhowtoopenasafe,andIwasanaptpupil.
Iwasnowlivingonthestreets.Ihitchhikedthroughout
Europeandlearnedaboutharddrugsandneedles.Finally
psychedelics–especiallyLSD–tookmeawayfromaddic-
tionandbroughtmebacktoamorebalancedstate.
Ibecameamacrobiotichippy,gotmarried,andhadmy
firstdaughter,Leela.Iwasbackreadingandmeditating
andindulgingmyinterestinallthingsmystical.Likemany
othersofmygeneration,ImadeanoverlandtriptoIndia.
Alongtheroadwerenewcultures,timetoread,toparty,
andtopracticeyoga;though,Imustsay,spiritualpractices
didnotreallydoitforme.Therewasnospecificteacher.
AlanWatts’booksweremyguidinglightandmaininspira-
tion;butlifewastherealteacherand,somehow,whatever

wasappropriatetomysearch’sunfoldingpresenteditself,
althoughIoftendidnotrecognizeitatthetime.
LookingbackIcanseehowinmagicmomentsIocca-
sionallyglimpsedthislivingpresenceappearingopenly
as,andatthesametimehiddenin,everything.Itisfor
thisreasonthatseveralpeople,includingWeiWuWeiand
TonyParsons,havereferredtothisas‘theopensecret.’
Duringthisjourneytherewereso-calledmysticalor
peak experiences; but in the end, all I can say is that
therehasbeenpainandpleasure,lossandgain,timesof
povertyandtimesofriches,partiesandprisons,hospitals
andhealth.Therehavebeenmomentsofdespaironwhite
sandybeachesandmomentsofgreatfreedomincolddank
cellswithironbars.
Inandthroughallthis,theseekingcontinued,butin
retrospect,nothinginthesearchcanbeassignedafunc-
tionormeaningthat,initself,ledtoawakening–unless
weconsidergivingupthesearchasaconsequenceofthat
search. The search consisted of acquiring information
andexperiences,whileawakeningwasandcontinuously
isrevealedinthedroppingofconceptsandexpectations.
Thisdroppinghashappenedbyitselfandnotasanactof
mypersonalwill.Intheprocess,thissupposedindividual’s
storywasdroppedaswell,andevenasItellit,thereis
noonelefttoclaimeithertheprizeofenlightenmentor
theauthorshipofthistext.Perhapsitiscleartoyouwhat
thisdisclaimermeans.Ifnot,perhapsitwillbecomeclear
duringthereadingofthisbook.

thatpointatthatwhichshinesfrombeyondtherealmof
conceptualthinking.
Allthisbookhastosayinvariouswaysis‘Thisisit;
youareit,’andthat’sallthereistoit.Ifreadingitjustonce
isenoughforyou,great;butifyou’reaseekerorsimplyin
lovewiththissubject,youcanusethetexttoexplorethis
messagethroughsuchideasandconceptsasenlightenment,
theego,theintellect,thebody,death,spiritualpractices,
thepositionofteachers,andyouridentityasaseeker.It
talksaboutthesurpriseofre-cognizingthemysteryofour
collectiveandtrueidentityandaboutre-memberingthe
treasuretrovewithin.Itisnotintendedtomakeconverts
ortoreplaceoldbeliefsandconceptswithnewones.It
isnotaboutsomethingIhaveorknow,butyoudon’t.It
talksaboutPureAwarenesswhich,inthefinalanalysis,
isallthereis.Thatbeingtrue,thenipsofacto,whether
acknowledged or unacknowledged, whether there is an
apparentseekingforenlightenmentornot,youareIT.
Thistextcanserveasasmallnudge,whichifdelivered
at the right moment, can trigger an awakening in the
samewaythatasnowballcantriggeranavalanche.The
following story of the master printing-press technician
illustratesthispointnicely:
Apublishingcompanyownedahugeprintingpress,which
wasessentialtoitsbusiness.Onemorning,afteryearsof
faithfulservice,themachinedidnotwanttostart.The
company’stechnicalpeopletriedinvaintoreviveit.They
finallygaveupandcontactedanexpertwholivedonthe
othersideofthecountry.Thenexteveninghearrived.It
wastoolatetostartworksohecheckedintoahotelfor
thenight.

Firstthinginthemorning,hetookhistoolkitover
tothepublisherandwasshownthesilentmachine.He
walked around it, did some tests, and found nothing
wrong, except for the fact that vibrating over years of
servicehadcausedthepresstobelessthanlevel,which
preventeditfromstartingup.Hedidsomemeasuring,
tookawedgefromhistoolkit,anddecidedontheexact
spotbetweenthefloorandthemachinetoinsertit.He
thengaveitafewdelicatetapswithahammer,flipped
theswitch,andthemachinecameinstantlytolife.The
companywasdelightedwiththequickresult,butthought
thebillof$2,700excessive.Whenthemastertechnician
wasaskedtoexplain,hebrokedownhisbillasfollows:
$450fortheplanefare;
$150forfoodandhotel;
$90forhistime;
$10dollarsforthewedgetolevelthemachine;
andfinally,$2,000forknowingwhereandhowto
applyit.
This book can be such a wedge. Nothing needs to be
repaired.Youarewholeasyouare.The(re)activationof
thisunderstandingsimplydependsonwhetherornotit
istheappropriatemomentforyouto‘level’withyourself.
Intheeast,itissaidthatatsuchamomentofripening
theGuruwillappear.Thisdoesnotnecessarilymeanthat
onefinemorningthedoorbellwillringandasagewill
bestandingtheresaying,‘Goodmorning,dearseekerof
thetruth.Ithasbeenbroughttomyattentionthatyou
havereachedthepointwhereyou’rereadytoreceiveTHE
ANSWER,andIamheretodeliverit.’

Whatitdoesmeanisthattheinvitationtoseewhoyou
reallyareisalwaysrighthere.Whatineasterntraditions
iscalledtheguruisthatwhichextendstheinvitation.The
guru(G-U-R-U)canappearasaperson,butisnotaperson.
Rather,theguruisamanifestationoftheanimatingenergy
thatappearsinandaseverything.Itislifeitself.
Itistheinnerconsciousnessbywhichheisunceasingly
revealinghisexistence.Thisdivineupadesa(instruction)
isalwaysgoingonnaturallyineveryone.*
SriRamanaMaharshi
As long as we look through the distorted glass of our
personalneedsandopinions,weoverlookthisever-present
invitation.Thedataweselectfromthetotalityofourexpe-
rienceisfilteredprimarilyforitsrelevancetooursurvival
andimmediateneedsanddesires.Welook,amongstother
things,fornourishment,sexualpartners,socialstatus,and
security. This divides our sensory input into two basic
categories:usableandunusabledata.Theusabledataare
admittedtoheadquarters,whilethevastmajorityofsignals
getignored.Thiswayofmanaginginformationmaybean
extremelyeffectivesurvivalstrategy,butitcomesatthe

whileifyouareprejudicedagainstacertainracialgroup,
youwilltendtooverlookordiscountthepositiveactions
andcharacteristicsofmembersofthatgroupinfavorof
that which supports your opinion. Of course the VW
Beetleswerealwaysthere;yourbelovedisjustasperfect
orflawedasanyoneelse;andallracescontainsomepeople
whoarekind,somewhoarecruel,somewhoarewise,
andsomewhoarefoolish.Whatyouseeisdeterminedto
agreatextentbyyour‘innerselectioncommittee,’much
likeitisforthetravelersinthefollowingSufistory:

happens there will be no more questions. You see that
everythingistheanswer–thattheguruisandhasalways
beencompletelypresent.Hemanifestsastheperson,inner
voice, or happening that triggers this surrender. Any
waytheinvitationisextended,itfunctionsastheguru.
Itmaybesilencefromasageorwordsfromashopkeeper.
Thesurrendermaycomethroughagonyorecstasy.Itcan
happenthroughanapplefallingonyourhead;itcancome
fromthesmileofachild;oritcanarisefromdeepinsideas
youwalkalongabeachatsunsetorwhenyouburnyour
fingeronthestove.Atanytime,yoursenseofseparation
maydissolvetorevealtheOnebeyondallduality.Asa
