General rule: Twelve singular nouns ending in –f or –fe

change the –f or –fe to –ves.


Singular noun + s = Plural Noun
(calf, half, knife, leaf, life, loaf, self, sheaf,
Examples: thief, wife, wolf)
table → tables Examples:
car → cars calf → calves
knife →knives
Singular nouns ending in –s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, -o + –es
= Plural nouns
Examples: Some nouns have got an irregular plural
form.
watch → watches
Examples:
brush → brushes
foot → feet
tomato → tomatoes
goose → geese
fox →foxes
tooth → teeth
 words of foreign origin ending in –o just add –s
louse → lice
Examples:
mouse → mice
piano → pianos
ox → oxen

Singular nouns ending in a consonant + -y child → children


change the –y to –I + -es = Plural noun. man → men
Example: woman → women
baby →babies
 Nouns ending in –y following a vowel just add Remember:
–s Adjectives do not take –s in the plural.
