Discussion:
 A noun is a word used to name a person, animal, place, or thing.
 A Common Noun refers to any person, animal place or thing. A common noun does
begin with a capital letter.
 A Proper Noun refers to specific person group of people, animal, place or thing. A
proper noun begins with a capital letter.

Study the encircled words in each sentence.

1. Young worker bees clean the hive and collect pollens.

2. According to Dr. Leo Lirio, honey is not a sugar.

3. Jonathan, the son of Mr. Miguel Vios believed that honey restored his

lost strength.

4. Athletes eat honey to enhance their performance.

5. In a study conducted by Penn State University, honey was discovered

to be better at alleviating cough that over-the-counter drugs

Lesson 1: Plural Nouns – Regular and Irregular

Discussion:
 Single nouns name one person, animal, place, or thing.
 Plural nouns name more than one person, animal, place or thing
 Add –s to most nouns
Examples: Singular Plural
Typhoon – Typhoons
Planet – Planets
 If a noun ends in s, sh, ch, x, or z add –es.
Examples: gas – gases dish – dishes beach – beaches
Fox – Foxes
 If nouns ends in a consonant y, change y to I and add –es.
Examples: activity – activities story – stories
Bunny – Bunnies baby – babies
 If a noun ends in y, preceded by a vowel, add –es.
Examples: toy – toys key – keys
tray – tray donkey – donkeys
 For some nouns ending in f and fe, add –s; for others change f or fe to v and add –es.
Examples: reef – reefs leaf – leaves
Belief – beliefs loaf – loaves
chief – chiefs calf – calves
roof – roofs self – selves
cliff – cliffs knife – knives
handkerchief – handkerchief life – lives
 For most nouns ending in –o add –s
Examples: piano – pianos
photo – photos
solo – solos
 For nouns with a vowel before the final –o, just add –s.
Examples: zoo – zoos studio – studios
pea – peas embryo – embryos
radio – radios
 Examples of nouns ending in –o that are always spelled with –es in the plural
tomato – tomatoes mosquito – mosquitoes
echo –echoes hero – heroes
potato – potatoes
 Examples of common nouns ending in –o that can be spelled with –s or –es in the plural.
Cargo – cargos or cargoes tornado – tornados or tornadoes
Volcano – volcanos or volcanoes flamingo – flamingos or flamingoes
Mango – mangos or mangoes motto – mottos or mottoes
Zero – zeros or zeroes avocado – avocados or avocadoes
 Some nouns have special plural forms. They are called Irregular Plurals.
Examples: Singular Plural

ox oxen
goose geese
 Some nouns do not change when they become plural.
