Student Name Grade Level and Section Instructor’s Name

I. Rationale

This module will be devoted completely to the study of “singular and plural
nouns”. Nouns are important in the learning of English, because as you will recall a
complete thought; or sentence; is made up of a noun and a verb. Furthermore, nouns
are usually the first words that all students learn. Since there is a diversity of meaning
for nouns, the best way to approach the study of nouns is through their characteristics.

You will begin by taking a Pre-test. You must achieve a score of 72% or more to
continue with the Assessment Exercises. Before beginning the Assessment Exercises
the different rules will be explained in a simple manner. Then, you may proceed with
the exercises. Finally, you will take a Post-test. You must also achieve a score of 72%
in order to pass the Module. Last but not the least; you will be provided with
additional links you may use to continue reinforcing your skills and knowledge on
singular and plural nouns.

C. Feedback
The simplest definition of a noun is a thing and nouns are the basic building blocks of
sentences. These things can represent a person, animal, place, idea, emotion – almost
anything that you can think of. Dog, Sam, love, phone, Chicago, courage and spaceship
are all nouns. The more nouns you know in a language, the better you will be able to
communicate your ideas. Here, we’ll take a closer look at what makes a noun a noun, and
we’ll provide some examples of how nouns are used.

For clarification and clear understanding:

• What part of the discussion was not very clear to you?
• What part of the discussion confuses you?

D. Self/Peer/ Group Assessment

1. The Longest List
Have students break into groups, and have them make a four-column chart with the titles
“Person,” “Place,” “Thing,” or “Idea.” Tell them that they will have twenty seconds to fill
out each column with as many nouns as they can think of. This fast-paced noun activity
should take less than two minutes. Encourage students to share their lists with the class,
and reward the longest fully-correct list with a small prize (scores) or a bit of
congratulatory praise.

2. Guess the Sport

For this noun game, have students pick a sport that they enjoy. Then have them write a
list of nouns that relate to the sport. (For example, for basketball, they might choose
“court,” “basket,” “backboard,” and “rim.”) Have them stand up and read their lists
aloud, and encourage the rest of the class to guess which sport the list describes.
