Everything has a name. There are some names that can be counted and
some cannot be counted.

Rules in Changing Singular Nouns to Plural Nouns

1. Add s to the noun


Ex.: desk – desks chair – chairs
dog – dogs fan – fans

2. Add es to nouns ending in s, ss, sh, ch, x, and z.


Ex.: branch – branches ash – ashes
fox – foxes watch – watches

3. Change y to i of nouns ending with a consonant and y. Then, add es.


Ex.: baby – babies rosary – rosaries
library – libraries lady – ladies

4. Add s to nouns ending in a vowel and y.


Ex.: boy – boys valley – valleys
day – days key – keys

5. Change the f or fe to v of nouns ending in f or fe and add es.


Ex.: shelf – shelves life - lives
loaf – loaves

6. Add s to nouns ending in a vowel and an o.


Ex.: radio – radios
bamboo – bamboos

7. Add es to nouns ending in a consonant and an o.


Ex.: potato – potatoes
mango – mangoes

However, there are nouns ending with an o whose plural form may be
formed by adding s or es.
Ex.: volcano – volcanos or volcanoes
mosquito – mosquitos or mosquitoes

8. Change the spelling of irregular nouns.


Ex.: woman – women tooth – teeth
mouse – mice child – children

COUNT NOUNS AND MASS NOUNS

There are nouns that can be counted and cannot be counted.

Count nouns are nouns that can be counted.


Examples:
 marbles
 pillows
 televisions
 boxes
 papers
Mass nouns are nouns that cannot be counted.

Examples:
 soy sauce
 ink
 pepper
 hair
 sand
