11:00-12:00: Introduction and background to the JIP

Ramin Moslemian (PM) informed the project participants about the background to the project including
the pre-meeting in February 2020 and the number of partners so far. The partners who have signed the
agreement so far include:

1. DNV GL (coordinator)
2. Saudi Aramco
3. Non-metallic Innovation Center (NIC) – on behalf of Aramco
4. NOV
5. Baker Hughes
6. FuturePipe
7. Vallourec
8. Solvay
9. RCA-Tubulars

Partners still discussing:

1. ADNOC: Technically interested but joining pending some legal matters

2. PDO: Technically interested but joining pending securing funding
3. Magma: Technically interested but joining pending securing funding

It was informed that due to later than expected start of the project, the start date for the project is
pushed from June 2020 to October 2020 leading the change in the end date to March 2022.

It is suggested that the last 4 months for the project is mainly to revise the guideline based on the input
from the partners and with active participation of the partners during the project we may be able to
publish the document sooner than 18 months suggested in the project agreement.

ACTION: by DNV GL to prepare an amendment to the attachment to the project agreement with revised
project schedule.

SharePoint

A SharePoint website is created, and all information related to the project will be uploaded there. At the
moment only colleagues attending the kick-off meeting have access to the sharepoint site. If other
colleagues would require access, please contact the project manager.

12:00-13:00: Technical presentation and project plan

A Technical presentation was given by the PM on why the JIP is needed for the safe and reliable use of
composite pipes for downhole tubing and casing. Some important topics discussed in the project:

Failure Envelope based on Design Pyramid

It was emphasized that due to complex loading conditions, long-term environmental effects and stress-
rupture failure mode, determination of the failure envelope for composite pipes downhole using only full-
scale testing is impractical. Therefore, a multi-scale approach based on the design pyramid concept
relying on modelling and small-scale material testing would be needed as outlined in DNVGL-ST-C501
and DNVGL-ST-F119.

Level of Simplicity of the Guideline

It was discussed that if the guideline is open for all conditions, the approach in generality will be like
DNVGL-ST-F119. It is suggested to limit the material systems as well as the operating conditions in
order to have a more simplified guideline.

ACTION: by DNV GL to prepare a list of suggestions for material systems as well as operating conditions,
considered in the project for the next meeting in late November 2020 after consulting with partners.

Choice of composite pipe systems:

It was discussed that which pipe systems should be chased for the project. There was some discussion
about TCP and RTP pipes. It was agreed that the discussions are mainly about terminology and in the JIP
instead of TCP and RTP we will refer to bounded thermoplastic composite pipes. Additionally, thermoset
based composite pipes will be considered.

Plan for the next 3 months

It was discussed that the plan for project work for the next three months before end of 2020 include:
1. An FMECA session with participants:
a. 2 half-a-day session:
i. Day 1 Bounded thermoplastic composite pipes
ii. Day 2 Thermoset GRE pipes
b. Meeting to be held in the last week of November
c. DNV GL to prepare a short document for participants for preparation to the FMECA
meeting
2. A Technical meeting in late December to discuss the work so far and the threat assessment
report from the FMECA meeting.

13:15-14:45: First steering committee meeting

Election of the Chairman of the steering committee

Dr. Waleed Al-Nasser from Saudi Aramco was nominated and chosen as the chairman of the steering
committee. Dr. Waleed Al-Nasser is the team leader of the Composite Development Team at the R&D
Centre of Saudi Aramco with extensive expertise and experience in composite material technologies.

Revision of the project budget

The initial budget for the project was 4.2m NOK. However, the fees which are expected to be collected
so far for the project is 3.25m NOK.

• The following adjustment to the budget was suggested and accepted by the steering committee:
o Only online meetings will be held in the project saving travel cost
o No social events
o Reduction of monthly meetings to bi-monthly meetings
o It if was necessary to have additional meetings, it will be planned with coordination of
chairman of steering committee
o If more companies join, the budget will be revised, and additional activities defined.

ACTION: by DNV GL to include the revised budget and adjustments in the amendment to the attachment
to the project agreement.

Confidentiality matters

The following matters on confidentiality matters were discussed:

• Confidentiality rules per agreement:
o All parties are bound by confidentiality clauses in the agreement.
o Any information exchanged in online discussions should be treated confidential unless it is
common knowledge.
o If information is to be shared which are especially sensitive, please inform the PM in advance.
o For sensitive written information in the form of emails, reports and presentations, which are
shared with the group, please mark them explicitly as confidential.
• Some other topics:
o Sharing of the information with company affiliates: to be made more clear in the amendment.
o Reducing the duration of confidentiality to 5 years from “as longs as information remain
confidential” stated at the moment in the agreement. This duration will be valid for final DNV
GL guideline and discussions.
o It was discussed and emphasised by Saudi Aramco and others that the intention is to take
the guideline to public and turn the guideline to an official DNV GL recommended practice
(RP) or standard within a short time after publication once the formal internal and external
hearing rounds are completed. The steering committee will have the possibility to change the
duration of the confidentiality at the end of the project.

ACTION: by DNV GL to include the additional topics and adjustments related to confidentiality in the
amendment to the attachment to the project agreement.

Potential new partners

The following matters on potential new partners were discussed:

• Steering committee must approve any new partner and whether 25% additional fee for late
joining should apply.
• For end-users it is fine to approach potential companies without discussion with the PM and
chairman of steering committee.
• For companies in other parts of value chain, before approaching the companies formally, PM and
chairman of steering committee need to be informed.
