SBI3U: The 20-20 Project!

Learning Goal:
To demonstrate a thorough understanding of a topic, selected by you, based on one of
the “Big Ideas” of the course. The final product is worth 20% of your overall mark in the
course.
You are asking a “what if?” or “what would happen if?” type of question and trying to
answer it with your research. This should be something that can’t be answered with a
“google search”.

Success Criteria:
➔ Spend approximately 20% of your class time researching your topic and
preparing your presentation.
➔ Consult with Ms. Gardiner regularly to ensure your research is progressing
appropriately.
➔ You will share your findings with the class in the last month of the semester in a
presentation lasting approximately 10 minutes. Names will be drawn randomly
unless a date is pre-selected for a valid reason.
➔ You must demonstrate connections between your research and the curriculum.

How to Get it Done!

Week One
Stage 1: Open Research
➔ this stage can be challenging, you need to find a topic that has lots of
information, is of interest to you, and can be narrowed into 3 or 4 sub-topics
➔ you should search/research information on a few different topics from the Big
Ideas until you find the one you want to use for the assignment
➔ You should consult many sources over the course of this project (10+)

Stage 2: Pitch your Topic

➔ have a conversation with Ms. Gardiner to pitch your topic
➔ this is your chance to select something you get to spend class time looking into,
and for earning marks
➔ have an overall topic ready and some sub-topics
➔ be prepared for Ms. Gardiner to ask you to change or refine something
➔ you must have your topic approved before proceeding onto the next stage
Weeks 2 - 4
Stage 3: Research and Refine
➔ this is where most of your time should be spent
➔ you need to keep track of your sources as you will submit a bibliography in APA
format
➔ you may wish to choose a graphic organizer to keep track of your research and
sort information into your sub-topics
➔ Your goal is to try and answer your research question. The best case
scenario is that there is no published answer, and you must draw your own
conclusions using your research.

Stage 4: The Finished Product

➔ this is actually something that can be done in conjunction with stage 3, especially
if you need extra time for typing your script and preparing slides
➔ the expected final product is a google slides presentation of your topic, taking
us through what you have researched and learned
➔ the slides should be mainly images and headings (almost no text)
➔ you will submit rough script in google docs that is run for plagiarism
➔ no video clips
➔ it’s like you’re teaching us, as the expert, about your topic
➔ you need to submit your bibliography in APA format

In June, you will:

SUBMIT THREE ITEMS
1) Google slides presentation (as a link with shared settings)
2) Script (will be run for plagiarism - goal is below 10%)
3) Bibliography in APA format (expectation is minimum 10 sources)

PRESENTATIONS OCCUR June IN CLASS
