English Research

1. Research on the uses of colons and semi-colons and give examples on

each
Uses of Colons
 A colon is used to give emphasis, present dialogue, introduce lists
or text, and clarify composition titles.
E.g.
My sisters and I are really excited: We're going to Disneyland!

 A colon can be used to connect two independent sentences.

E.g.
I have a few favourite classes at school: literature, psychology, and
art.

Uses of Semi-Colons
 A semicolon has two general uses: to clarify a series.
 Series—if one or more elements in a series contain a comma, use
semicolons to separate them.
E.g.
Members of the Western Jazz Quartet are Tom Knific, bassist;
Trent Kynaston, saxophonist; Steve Zegree, pianist; and Tim
Froncek, drummer.

 To indicate two closely related sentences.

E.g.
I ordered a soda with my lunch; my diet doesn't start until next
week.

2. Research on the uses of ellipsis and give examples on each

Uses of Ellipsis
 It can be used to show a word or words have been removed from a
quote.
E.g.
I don't know … I'm not sure

 It can create suspense by adding a pause before the end of the

sentence.
E.g.
If your grown-ups ask you if you have tidied your room, you
might reply, ‘Well I was going to…’

 Here, the ellipsis has finished the sentence and replaced “but I
haven't”

 It can also be used to show the trailing off of a thought.

E.g.
I never thought . . .
