The Woman in Me
by Rhoda G. Manipon
One day morning, I woke up running to Mama, the name I use to call
my mother. I sighed, “Mama, there’s blood on my underwear”!
Mama smiled and explained, “You are not a child anymore but a lady.
Now, take a bath with warm water and mild soap. Then, I’ll show you how to
put sanitary pad on your undergarment”.
From then on, I became over conscious about my outfits, gestures and
wellness. I started to dress as if I was a teenager female actor. I learned to
sit properly, eat quietly, and speak gently. Exercise became my daily routine
for my muscular and cardio-vascular endurance and body coordination
and composition. During my puberty stage, I exercised regularly to develop
the stamina of my muscles, heart and lungs, the smooth execution of my body
parts and the average percentage of fat, muscle and bone in my body.
Compared with other teens, I did not experience having pimples, mood
swings during menstruation, and armpit hair. Although I noticed my breast
started to enlarge, my hips to widen and pubic hair to grow.
As I reminisced my journey as an adolescent, I embraced Mama and
whispered, “Mama, thank you for being with me. I love you”!

If I would have the chance to bring the past back, I would rewind the
moment when my father was carrying me at his back. It feels like it was
longest time in my life that I had a father who could protect me by my side,
but events seemed to challenge the fate of my family. My father needed to
work abroad so he could sustain our daily needs. From then on, I needed to
become courageous in order to strengthen my mother and my younger brother.
I needed to show that I am responsible even in my young age so I can make
my father be proud of me. My father once told me to study hard for education
is the only treasure he can give, and that it will bring me to success. With that
promise, I decided to concentrate on my schoolwork and maintained my
scholarship until I finished my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education
with flying colors. I thought my father could go home on my graduation day;
instead, he decided to exchange his vacation into mo netary form to pay for
my board review and licensure examination. If God would grant me one wish,
I would wish to march on stage with my father rather than to get my medals
and diploma without him. Until I had graduated in my Master’s degree; yet,
my father hadn’t able to attend the ceremony due to Covid-19 pandemic that
shut all airlines operations off. For fifteen years, I longed for a father working
with my mother at home, a father bringing me to the school and fetching me
afterwards, and a father whom I can cry on and who can guard me all the
time. That is why I am not yet getting married because I will wait for my father
who will escort me along the aisle.

Grandmother’s Granddaughter
by Rhoda G. Manipon
“Apok, honor your mother and father because that’s the only
commandment with a reward,” enlightened Apong Dora, the nickname her
granddaughter used to call her.
“What will be my reward, Apong?” asked her granddaughter.
“Your days will become longer, and you will live well,” Apong Dora replied.
“What if I will not obey them, Apong?” inquired her granddaughter.
“Not heeding the advice of your parents may lead you to danger,” Apong
Dora explained. “For example, your parents warn you to climb the stairs
carefully, but you run and accidently slip down, you may get hurt and worse,
you may break your bones.”
“Ah! I need to listen to Mama and Papa, salutation for a mother and a
father. Hmmmm. Do I need to review my lesson every night, do my assignment
before I play, and read the Bible before going to bed, Apong? That’s what
Mama and Papa remind me every day.
“Of course, Apok. Why do you think you should do those tasks?” asked
Apong Dora challenging her granddaughter’s wit.
“In order for me to get high grades,” her granddaughter paused and think
for a second. “And if I have good grades, my parents will be proud of me.”
“Great, Apok!” You have a good point,” Apong Dora felt proud with her
little granddaughter. “How about this. Why do you need to eat vegetables?”
Her granddaughter looked at her Apong Dora curiously as if she could
find the right answer into her eyes. “Vegetables have a lot of vitamins and
minerals. If I eat vegetables, then, I will be healthy. Am I correct, Apong?”
Apong Dora showed a contended smile as she blessed Rhoda’s head.

little girl. I always compare myself with the children around me. Growing up

years old and I am 17 already. I saw my mom as a disciplinarian mother with
various responsibilities that adds to her stress, fatigue and pressure. As an

personal needs. I grew up seeing my mother working for the purpose of
earning money to supply our needs. I myself was taught how to spend money

A Merry Heart
by Elena V. Quejado
Proverbs 17:22 tells us, "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a
broken spirit drieth the bones”. We can think of no better embodiment of this
saying than when it comes to caregiving. We’ve all heard the expression
“laughter is the best medicine. This expression supported the proverbs to have
a merry heart. For starters, laughter is a powerful form of stress relief which
works in a number of different ways, including increasing endorphins
released by the brain; decreasing your stress response; and alleviating tension.
In addition, laughter decreases also the possibility of heart attacks according
to studies. Psychologist tell us that as we laugh, we intake oxygen-rich air
that will enrich our oxygenated blood. This blood will distribute the oxygen
around the body which is needed for metabolism. Aside from laughing, we
still need cardio exercise to maintain our normal heartbeat that contributes
to a merry heart. Consistent exercise like swimming, walking and lifting
weights are part of it. Moreover, in most counselling sessions they recommend
practicing a daily habit of praise and thanksgiving and avoid discouragement
and disappointments. When our heart is happy and at peace, it brings life
and health to our body. Wow! And it has no adverse side effects. Such a merry
heart is our sword and shield to face challenges in this time of pandemic.
