ASSESSMENT 3

Essay:
Answer the following questions briefly. Differences are influenced by where people live,
socioeconomic backgrounds, levels of education, religion, and individual lived experiences.
These factors influence how people view and read their world (Gee, 1996; Vygotsky, 1986).
Diversity exists within any cultural group. And it is common that people make generalizations
based on unexamined assumptions and perceptions that can sustain stereotypes. Why is
generalization dangerous and how do you avoid it?

DON’T JUDGE EASILY

All of us are born different, from our race, color, religion, stories and so much more.
God made us to be different and to be special. We are unique so we can’t be copied by
anyone else but think of it this way. Many people have always been generalizing different
humans based on what they think of the people just because they aren’t the same to them.
For example, people generalized black people as scary and ugly because of their color. Asian
people get mocked for all of them being short and Indian are generalized as dirty people.
These are opinions that people have been doing which really discriminate these types of
people. This is why generalizations should be a concern. Generalizations are dangerous and
should always be avoided.
Generalization is a general statement of things that is applied to a group of people or
things. They are based on a common characteristic. Often generalizations are not entirely
true because there are examples of individuals and situations wherein generalization does
not apply. Generalization is similar to stereotypes that is offensive to other people. One case
of this is to the Arab’s ethnic group, they are generalized as terrorists in the news and
internet for they have been talked a lot about the wars in the middle east. Having to use
brutality in order to gain victory and power. People that have seen Arabs on the news or in
the internet, they see and generalized them as criminals because Arabs only wanted violence
and to take over the world. This is literally offensive to other Arabs who are living in a
peaceful life and was not involved to the wars people had been speculating. This is one good
reason of how dangerous Generalization really is. Another example is Mexicans who are
accused of being drug addicts. Again not all Mexican are connected to drugs and
paraphernalia. There are many Mexicans who are cleansed, those who are living a normal life
and wanted to fulfill their dreams with no illegality. You see these examples are connected to
what is called Racism. Discrimination without a doubt is still visible to this world and will
never be change for it is accustomed by many people. It is truly a sad thing that people can’t
try to accept other people’s ethnic backgrounds. People need to stop generalizing everything
because not all people are the same. The people who are accused but innocent can be really
hurt and can change their perspective in life for they are not treated with respect. We need

to think of our generalizations to people right now because it can truly transform your
perspective of people, removing racism from this world and having good relationships with
people. Always think of their backgrounds first, not all of them are what you think they are.
Do not hesitate to understand their status in life, don’t make assumptions immediately,
remember to always respect them and to never question their culture with a bad view. I
hope everybody should get treated with respect and have dignity for they have the right to
live and be treated equally.
It is okay to have a generalization since they are guidelines which make us get through
the most general of cases. But never think of generalizing people, we must first know their
stories and to never judge them easily. Always remember that we are born to be different, it
is only us that can accept them.
