Causes and Main Principles


What is The Sufi Movement?
The Sufi movement was a socio-religious
movement of fourteenth to sixteenth century. The
exponents of this movement were unorthodox
Muslim saints who had a deep study of vedantic
philosophy and Buddhism of India. ... The Sufi
movement therefore was the result of the Hindu
influence on Islam.
Causes for the Sufi Movement
● After the death of Prophet Muhammad, there were disputes
regarding the elections of caliphate in Musim community.
Thus, the community was divided in 2 sects - Sunnis and
Shias.There were constant conflicts between the 2 faction.
● Also, many Muslim rulers becam inclined to leading a
luxuries life.
● Hence, to maintain peace and unity amongst
themselves,some of the liberals started a reform movement-
Sufism.It advocated religious tolerance.They believed in
personal devotion to god through love and service
Sufi Teachings
● There is only 1 all-powerful god
● All human beings are children of god and hence are equal
● There are many paths to reach god , so all religion must
be respected.
● Rituals , fasts and prayers aren’t required to reach
god.We can reach god through love, devotion and service
● One must respect all human beings and live a pure life
● There is no need of converting religion.
● Meditation and music are also ways to reach god
● Faithfulness and true devotion to one’s own religion is enough
