Proposed Title #1
Can Mayana Plant (Coleus) Leaves Extract Effectively Treat Powdery Mildew
Growth (Erysiphe cichoracearum) in Ornamental Plants and Vegetables?
This study aims to determine if the Coleus plant (Mayana), readily grown
in Benguet and Baguio, can be a potent, effective, cheap, safe and
sustainable alternative to chemical fungicides against powdery mildew. The
Highland Province of Benguet is known for its significant production of upland
vegetables and the ornamental plants like flowers, thereby providing economic
growth and lucrative income for the locals. Powdery Mildew affects both
ornamental plants and vegetables causing decreased productivity and
earnings due to the havoc it brings. Farmers resort to chemical fungicides that
are harmful to both people and the environment. Coleus has been known in
Asia for its antifungal and antimicrobial activity and has been used in skin
infections in humans.
Proposed Title #2
Which among the different Coleus species or varieties that are available
and grown in Benguet/Baguio would be the most potent plant in terms of
controlling Powdery Mildew Growth (Erysiphe cichoracearum) in Ornamental
Plants and Vegetables?
This study aims to determine what Coleus species or variety, readily grown
in Benguet and Baguio is the most potent (strongest antifungal
properties)effective, cheap, safe and sustainable alternative to chemical
fungicides against powdery mildew. The Highland Province of Benguet is known
for its significant production of upland vegetables and the ornamental plants
like flowers, thereby providing economic growth and lucrative income for the
locals. Powdery Mildew affects both ornamental plants and vegetables
causing decreased productivity and earnings due to the havoc it brings.
Farmers resort to chemical fungicides that are harmful to both people and the
environment. Use of Coleus varieties abundant in the area will make it more
sustainable and economically viable.
Proposed Title #3
Which part of the Coleus plant would yield the most potent antifungal
extract (leaves or roots) in terms of controlling Powdery Mildew Growth
(Erysiphe cichoracearum) in Ornamental Plants and Vegetables?
The leaves and the roots of the Coleus shall each be subjected to
Ethanolic Extraction Method and tested on plants with Powdery Mildew to
determine which has a stronger antifungal action. Knowing what to use (leaves
or the roots) will help farmers and gardeners achieve better control of the
disease and at the same time be cost effective thereby saving money and
maximizing production.
