The implications of introducing the Kahayla
Classic and other top races
Meydan stages the Dubai Kahayla Classic on Saturday,
a race that is now a quarter of a century old, and very
much the forerunner to what is the core of the current
international PA race programme. The ‘Kahayla Classic’
was in fact the first PA race whose purse (dollars)
stretched to seven figures. It was only very gradually
that other Gulf States followed suit by introducing ma-
jor PA races in the winter-spring period with compara-
ble – and sometimes even more valuable – purses, as
is now the case in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and
Saudi Arabia. This proliferation of these very lucrative
prizes gave rise to well-structured/endowed local race
programmes, catering for all categories of horse, within
the different racing nations in this region. Owners in the
Gulf States, in addition to exhibiting the desire of keep-
ing their horses locally, are further incentivised to race
their charges on the home stage given the generous
"daily" prize money levels on offer.
This begs the question: how should the French PA, or
even the European PA Racing Calendar for that matter,
adapt to this seemingly inexorable trend?
From my perspective, France must continue to plough
its own furrow: and one centred around the selection
process and young horses. Historically, in our coun-
try, horses race as 3-year-olds. It was at this age that
Manganate, Kesberoy, Dormane and others, were able
to prove on the track that they had the required quality.
What France does supremely well, and perhaps some-
times better than others, is to facilitate the breeding of
PA horses in the best possible conditions. This is the
precursor to providing the breed with an exceptionally
selective and formative racing programme for 3/4-year-
olds. Subsequently, the outstanding performers remain
with their French trainers with a view to contesting the
world’s top PA prizes. Some of these star performers are
exported abroad, whereas others continue their racing
careers in France. Lastly, the remainder are eventually
retired to stud, or are retrained
(for other equine purposes). This trend, already in evi-
dence, is likely to accentuate. We can discern that the
PA market is recovering strongly and, as things stand in
France, new breeders, with the necessary means, have
recently set up shop. Some are French, whereas others
hail from the Arab world. Some of them are here to race,
others to sell. If we want to satisfy these two groups,
with a view to maintaining the privileged position of
the French PA sector, it’s necessary to continue the
pathway undertaken by Afac. This entails catering for

Ce que la Kahayla et les autres courses million-
naires ont changé
Samedi, Meydan accueille la Dubai Kahayla Classic,
une épreuve qui existe depuis un quart de siècle et
qui fait figure de précurseur dans ce qui constitue le
cœur du programme international actuel. La "Kahayla"
fut la première course pour pur-sang arabes avec une
allocation à sept chiffres en dollars. Et ce n’est que très
progressivement que les autres pays du Golfe ont pro-
posé des grandes épreuves hivernales ou printanières
avec des allocations comparables – et parfois même
aujourd’hui supérieures –, comme c’est désormais
le cas au Qatar, aux Émirats arabes unis et en Arabie
Saoudite. Cette multiplication des courses millionnaires
s’accompagne du développement d’un programme
local bien construit et bien doté pour toutes les caté-
gories dans les différents pays de la zone. Les proprié-
taires des pays du Golfe, outre la volonté d’avoir leurs
chevaux près d’eux, sont incités à courir à domicile par
des allocations généreuses "au quotidien".
Cela pousse à se poser la question suivante : comment
le programme français, voire européen, doit-il s’adap-
ter face à cette tendance qui semble inexorable ?
De mon point de vue, la France doit continuer à creuser
son sillon : celui de la sélection et des jeunes chevaux.
Historiquement, dans notre pays, on courait à 3ans.
C’est à cet âge que Manganate, Kesberoy, Dormane et
les autres ont pu prouver en piste qu’ils avaient de la
qualité. Ce que la France fait magnifiquement bien, et
parfois peut-être mieux que d’autres, c’est permettre
d’élever des pur-sang arabes dans les meilleures condi-
tions possible. Puis de leur fournir un programme de
courses exceptionnellement sélectif et formateur à
3ans et 4ans. Ensuite, les champions restent chez leur
entraîneur français pour courir les grandes courses de
ce monde. Une partie des bons sont exportés tandis
que certains continuent à faire carrière en France. Enfin,
les autres vont au haras ou sont reconvertis. Cette ten-
dance, déjà à l’œuvre, a de fortes chances de conti-
nuer à s’amplifier. On voit que le marché du pur-sang
arabe est en forte reprise, et en France, aujourd’hui,
de nouveaux éleveurs avec des moyens se lancent

a Racing Calendar for 3/4-year-olds that is even more
lucrative. This goes hand-in-hand with the increase in
the number of young PA horses currently in training in
France as per the initial months of 2023. More races for
PA 3/4-year-olds translates to increased opportunities
for owners and breeders to have a winner. After which
it’s up to each individual to map out either the local or
international destiny of the PA horse in question...

4ans, c’est plus d’opportunités de passer le poteau en
tête pour les propriétaires et les éleveurs. À chacun en-
suite de décider de la destinée locale ou internationale
de son pur-sang arabe…

PRIZE MONEY LEVELS AND THE NUMBER OF HORSES
ARE ON THE RISE
DES ALLOCATIONS ET DES EFFECTIFS EN CROISSANCE
At the backend of 2022, France Galop’s Board of
Directors rubber stamped the 2023 budget, in which
the package of incentive measures was increased to the
tune of €10 million. The represents an increase of 3.7
per cent, or an additional €90,000, for the PA sector.
The harmonisation process of prize money levels rel-
ative to the class of race, which had got underway in
2022, will therefore come full circle in 2023! All 3-year-
old ‘Premium’ races have had their purses increased to
€18,000 (up from €16,000). ‘Premium’ races for 4-year-
old races – and those in the 4-year-olds plus division –
will similarly be increased from €14,000 to €16,000.
Consequently, all the professionals which underpin the
dynamism of the PA sector, are delighted with these
developments. The feel good factor is therefore reflect-
ed in the increase in our prize money levels, and also
translates in the number of PA horses in training.
THE NUMBER OF PA 3-YEAR-OLDS HAS IN-
CREASED BY 58 PER CENT SINCE 2021
As of March 1 , 2023, the head count relative to the PA
st
breed reveals the presence of 379 horses, which needs to
be set against the respective 2022 and 2021 figures of 349
and 308. The most discerning hike relates to the number of
PA 3-year-olds which currently number 239. The equivalent
figures of 2022 and 2021 were respectively 203 and 151.
AFAC continues to closely monitor the evolution of these
numbers, and so regularly consults with trainers in order to

de France Galop a validé le budget 2023, actant ainsi
une hausse de 10 M€ de l’enveloppe des encourage-
ments. Cette hausse d’allocations se traduit par une
augmentation de 3,7 %, soit 90.000 € pour la filière
pur-sang arabe.
L’harmonisation des allocations selon les catégories de
courses, commencée en 2022, sera donc atteinte en
2023 ! Toutes les courses de 3ans "premium" ont donc
désormais une allocation de 18.000 € (16.000 € aupa-
ravant). Les courses de 4ans – et de 4ans et plus –"pre-
mium" passent de 14.000 € à 16.000 €.
De quoi réjouir tous les professionnels qui participent
au dynamisme de la filière pur-sang arabe. Cet en-
gouement se traduit par la revalorisation de nos al-
locations mais également par le nombre de chevaux
à l’entraînement.
DEPUIS 2021, LES EFFECTIFS DE 3ANS ONT PRO-
GRESSÉ DE 58 %
Au 1 mars 2023, nous avons le plaisir de comptabili-
ser 379 pur-sang arabes contre 349 en 2022 et 308 en
2021. La hausse la plus importante revient aux chevaux
de 3ans qui sont aujourd’hui au nombre de 239, contre

THE BREEDING ELEMENT
Given that the breeding season is now in full swing we
would like to remind all breeders:
- That the ICSI process is currently banned under
the rules of PA racing: The intracytoplasmic sperm
injection – or ICSI for short – artificially replicates the
fertilisation of the oocyte. This entails injecting a sperm
cell directly into a female gamete. It’s important to note
that the WAHO guidelines (rule no. 21) – which came
into force on January 1 , 2013 – specify that no horse,

resulting from in vitro fertilization process, is eligi-
ble for inclusion in an Arabian Horse Stud Book.
So don’t run the risk of your horse being ineligible
for the stud book by indulging the practice of ICSI!!

THE FORTHCOMING ACA ELECTIONS
Lastly, we would like to inform you that the Association
Nationale Française du Cheval Arabe pur-sang et
demi-sang (ACA), the only recognised authority by the
Ministry of Agriculture relative to the Arabian Horse
Stud Book, will hold its General Assembly on Saturday
April 1 at Saint-Étienne-de-Tulmont.

Administrative posts are up for grabs and members of
the AFAC board will be fielding candidates in this elec-
tion. In order to defend the interests of the PA racing
industry on the ACA board, it’s important to support
the candidates on the AFAC ticket.
Members who have paid their ACA 2023 membership
fees will soon receive their invitations and documenta-
tion relative to the General Assembly. So we are hope-
ful, therefore, that many of you will subscribe to ACA
membership this year.
Many novelties are in the offing for the 2023 racing sea-
son, which we plan to share with you shortly!
So do join us on the racecourse, where our very best
horses will be getting their campaigns underway, and
when you factor in, too, the coming into the world of
our youngest horses, the 2023 season promises to be
an excellent one.

Enfin, nous vous informons que l’Association nationale
française du cheval arabe pur-sang et demi-sang (ACA),
seule autorité légitime auprès du ministère de l’Agricul-
ture pour le stud-book arabe, tiendra son Assemblée
générale le samedi 1er avril à Saint-Étienne-de-Tulmont.
Des postes d’administrateurs sont à pouvoir et des
membres du Bureau de l’Afac se porteront candidats.
Afin de défendre les intérêts de la filière "course" au
sein du Conseil d’administration ACA, il est important
de soutenir les candidats Afac.
Les adhérents en règle de cotisation ACA 2023 rece-
vront prochainement leurs convocations et les docu-
ments relatifs à l’Assemblée générale. C’est pourquoi
nous espérons que beaucoup prendront leur cotisation
ACA cette année.

Comprising eight stallion shares and breeding rights,
in tandem with five PA horses of racing age, the second
Arqana Online sale of 2023 took place on Tuesday 31st
January. In the final analysis, all the lots found buyers
for a total of €511,000. Regarding those horses of rac-
ing age sold due to a court order, Neptune Al Maury
(Jaafer ASF), a full brother to the Gr1 PA winning Rajeh
(Jaafer ASF), was sold for €52,000 to Zied Romdhane.
Lartiste du Paon (Munjiz) was sold for €25,000 to
Saubouas Bloodstock. He’s a brother to Meydan du
Paon (third in the Arabian Triple Crown, Gr3 PA), Diva
du Paon (second in the French Arabian Breeders’

Du côté des pur-sang arabes en âge de courir vendus sur

Wathba Stallions, the breeding operation of H.H.
Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, is pleased to
unveil the composition of its stallion roster for the
2023 breeding season, which include several exciting
new prospects.
The multiple Group PA 1 winning sire Areem (Mahabb)
showed a lot of speed on the racetrack. After a promis-
ing first racing season in France at three, where he was
second in a high class renewal of the Coupe de France
des Chevaux Arabes (Gr.1 PA), Areem continued his ca-
reer in the UAE which yielded four PA Group 1 wins: the
National Day Cup (twice), the Al Maktoum Challenge
Round 1 and the Liwa Oasis. He stamps his stock and
has had winners from his first crop.
Mushrae (Munjiz) scored his first Gr PA 1 success
at three, having annexed the Arabian Trophy des
Poulains, and he underpinned his talent at four by land-
ing the Qatar Arabian World Cup at ParisLongchamp.
Mushrae is a son of the outstanding PA Group winning
mare Djezika (Dormane), who is also the dam of Nahee
(Mahabb) and Taymour (Bibi de Carrère). The grandam
is none other than the exceptional Cherifa (Chéri Bibi),
whose lineage has generated Tayf, Majd Al Arab,
Handassa, Cherazade, Djesabelle, Djelmane, Djourifa,

Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a annoncé la composi-
tion de son offre d’étalons 2023, avec plusieurs jeunes
sires prometteurs.
Le multiple lauréat de Gr1 Areem (Mahabb) a mon-
tré beaucoup de vitesse en piste. Après une bonne
première saison à 3ans, où il s’est classé deuxième de
la très relevée Coupe de France des Chevaux Arabes
(Gr1 PA), Areem a continué sa carrière aux Émirats.
Il a alors remporté quatre Grs1 PA : la National Day
Cup, deux fois, ainsi que l’Al Maktoum Challenge
Round 1 et le Liwa Oasis. Ce jeune étalon signe vrai-
ment sa production et il a déjà des gagnants avec sa
première génération.

A stakes winner at three in France, Naseem (Mahabb)
continued his successful career in the UAE with victo-
ries in the H.H. The President Cup and the Al Maktoum
Challenge Round 1 (Gr1s PA). Naseem hails from a very
successful female line which has generated multiple PA
Group winners in the image of Dahwa, Teema, Hayyan,
Bandar, Najah, Thabit, Elaf, Bayan, Deryan, Shahm,
Aicha de Monlau, Abhaar and so forth…
The Gr1 PA winning Raaziq (Munjiz) is a very inter-
esting stallion prospect, being endowed with a good
mind-set, and indifferent to the state of the ground. His
half-brother Thakif (Mahabb), having competed at the
highest level, was a sextuple PA Group winner. Both
hail from the same female line as the likes of Shadiyda,
Akbar, Zefiro de Nulvi, Brraq, Aoun, Haajeb, Falero
de Nautiac, Af Alghabra, etc. Raaziq and Thakif have
both sired their first winners in the UAE, with Muram
(Thakif) winning at Sharjah in November, and Raazaq
Baynounah (Raaziq) following suit at Abu Dhabi
in December…
The Gr1 PA scorer Rmmas (Mahabb) has exceptional
conformation. He showed a lot of speed during his
racing career. Furthermore, he boasts an outstanding
pedigree. His dam, Shamayl (Kesberoy), proved to
be a remarkable broodmare, having produced Joudh,
Mabrooka, Rakha, Kanaan, Haanoof, Baraaqa etc. One
can also detect the presence of multiple champions on
the dam’s side, and for this read: Câlin de Louve, Lahib,

1,000m to 1,600m in France and the UAE. He’s a hand-
some specimen with an interesting pedigree. As he’s

The grandam, the Tunisian-born El Afia, has produced
Laamma, Abhaar, Hagnes de Faust, etc.
The globetrotter Ziyadd (Bibi de Carrère) was a prov-
en stakes class performer, having graced the European
and UAE stages from the ages of 3 to 8 in Europe
and the UAE. He’s a son of the multiple Gr1 PA win-
ning mare Mizzna, and is a full-brother to the Kahayla
Classic winner and successful sire Rabbah de Carrère
(Bibi de Carrère). He’s also the half-brother to the ill-fat-
ed multiple PA Gr1 winner Hattal. Ziyadd’s grandam is
Unchainedd Melody: a legend in her own right.
All were bred by H.H. Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al

OSARUS UNDERTAKES TO ORGANISE A BREEZE UP SALE
FOR PA HORSES
OSARUS VA ORGANISER UNE BREEZE UP POUR PUR-SANG ARABES
France will break new ground, and, to the best of our
knowledge, it also constitutes a first at global level: as
Osarus is organising a breeze up sale for PA 3-year-olds.
Coming, as it does, on the heels of the La Teste Breeze Up
Sale on April 26-27. Emmanuel Viaud explained: “After
talking to the various parties in the PA sector, I felt that
there was an opportunity, at this time of the year, for PA
3-year-old colts and fillies. Those wishing to nominate
their horses for the sale can do so as of now. The PA
horses will be on display, and mounted to boot, once the
English thoroughbred 2-year-olds have cantered on April
26 . The aim is not necessarily to beat the clock, but to

showcase horses with good confirmation. If the consign-
ors are of the view that the lots on offer should canter
upsides as a pair, then we will accede to their request(s).
This particular occasion coincides with a race meeting
at La Teste when a PA Group race will form part of the
card. This is the prelude to the horses being auctioned
the following day – again after the English thoroughbreds
have gone through the ring. The South-West of France
is the hotbed of the PA horse, and so there should be a
market for these horses – mindful, too, that bids can also

THE CATALOGUE FOR ENGLISH THOROUGHBREDS
IS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING FINALISED
On the other hand, Osarus is in the process of finalising
the breeze up catalogue for English thoroughbreds.
Emmanuel Viaud added: “I’m going to Ireland next
week. We should have a number of Irish consignors this
year plus our traditional French vendors.”
Olkovskha (Zelzal) is a graduate of the 2022 Breeze
Up Sale. The sale topper, she boasts two wins in four
career outings for trainer Christophe Ferland, which has
warranted an entry in the Gr1 Prix Saint-Alary. Samedi
Rien (Bated Breath), having gone through the ring in
the same sale two years earlier, was third in last month’s
Gr2 Cape Verdi Stakes at Meydan.

CATALOGUE EN COURS DE FINALISATION POUR
LES PUR-SANG ANGLAIS
D’autre part, Osarus est en train de finaliser le catalogue
de la breeze up pour pur-sang anglais. Emmanuel Viaud
a dit : « Je pars en Irlande la semaine prochaine. Nous
devrions avoir cette année un certain nombre de présen-
tateurs irlandais, ainsi que nos vendeurs français histo-
riques. » Issue de la breeze up 2022, dont elle avait d’ail-
leurs réalisé le top price, Olkovskha (Zelzal) s’est imposée
à deux reprises en quatre sorties sous l’entraînement de
Christophe Ferland, qui l’a engagée dans le Saint-Alary
(Gr1). Samedi Rien (Bated Breath), passée par la même
vente deux ans plus tôt, s’est classée troisième le mois

JEAN-FRANÇOIS BERNARD
MUTBAHY ATHBAH, LE PLUS BEL HOMMAGE À JEAN-FRANÇOIS BERNARD
Emotions were running high following the running
of the fifth on the Monday evening card at Toulouse
on March 6th! As every year, Élisabeth Bernard has
runners in the PA race which commemorates her late
husband, who passed away in 2015. After years of
trying, the handler finally hit the target by saddling
the winner of the Prix Warda - Jean-François Bernard.
Understandably, the trainer was very emotional after
the race. She was all the more so given that Mutbahy
Athbah (Jalnar Al Khalidiah) won the race under
Jean-Bernard Eyquem, who was very close to Jean-
François Bernard. Incidentally, the latter trained both
the sire and dam of the winner, Jalnar Al Khalidiah
(Tiwaiq) and Mandragore Al Maury (Dormane)! The
Prix Warda - Jean-François Bernard is a race that tends
to unearth some smart performers, as previous win-
ners have often gone on to prove themselves at PA
Group level...

Et après des années de tentatives, elle a enfin rempor-

AJS Saaeq, the Al Jeryan Stud’s flagship performer,
recently provided his breeder, owner and trainer rolled
into one, Mohammed Hamad Khalifa Al Attiyah, with
his first Gr1 PA winner. You can certainly sense the en-
thusiasm of the horse’s mentor by the way he commu-
nicates. We also made his acquaintance during the H.H.
The Amir Sword Meeting at Doha.
AJS Saaeq is a son of the home stallion Af Albahar
(Amer), who has been producing a lot of winners this
winter in the Gulf region. Mohammed Hamad Khalifa
Al Attiyah explained:
“Af Albahar is a top stallion. He has been recognised as
such for many years. The Haras de Thouars has done a
great job in terms of marketing this stallion in France.
For he has covered a significant number of mares. This
is a good indicator when it comes to breeding. We have
deliberately kept his stud fee low. To have a chance of
producing good performers, a stallion needs to cov-
er enough mares. At the beginning of his stud career,
Af Albahar covered sizeable books of mares in Qatar.
However, during the past two years, we have striven
to be more circumspect in terms of his book of mares
so as to attract better quality ones. Numerically speak-
ing, his book of ‘local’ mares has fallen somewhat.” Af
Albahar’s progeny have proved very successful in Qatar,
where speed is an important determiner of performance

Fer de lance d’Al Jeryan Stud, AJS Saaeq a ap-
porté un premier Gr1 en tant qu’éleveur, proprié-
taire et entraîneur à Mohammed Hamad Khalifa Al
Attiyah. Son mentor a un enthousiasme communica-
tif. Et nous l’avons rencontré à Doha lors du mee-
ting de H.H. The Amir Sword.
AJS Saaeq est un fils de l’étalon maison Af Albahar
(Amer), lequel produit énormément de gagnants cet
hiver dans le Golfe. Mohammed Hamad Khalifa Al
Attiyah explique :
« Af Albahar est un top-étalon. Cela fait plusieurs an-
nées qu’il est reconnu comme un reproducteur de
premier plan. Le haras de Thouars a fait du très bon
travail pour sa promotion sur le marché français. Il a
sailli un nombre significatif de juments. C’est un bon
bilan en matière d’élevage. Nous maintenons son prix
de saillie volontairement bas. Pour avoir une chance
de sortir des bons produits, il faut saillir suffisamment
de juments. En début de carrière, Af Albahar saillissait
énormément au Qatar. Mais depuis deux ans, nous
essayons d’être plus sélectifs sur les poulinières qu’il
reçoit ici pour améliorer la qualité de la jumenterie avec
laquelle il est croisé. Mathématiquement, cela a un peu
réduit son nombre de saillies localement. » La produc-
tion d’Af Albahar réussit très bien au Qatar où la vitesse
est un élément important pour être performant. Parmi

level. His outstanding performers, of course, include AJS
Saaeq, with the latter causing quite a stir by beating the
‘imports’ in a Gr1 PA race: something of a rarity for a
locally-bred horse. The day before this feat, his mentor
said: “I want to try my luck. If you forego a good race
with a good horse, you will never win this type of event.
You sometimes have to take risks.” It was a gamble that
paid off. Af Albahar’s record as an Al Jeryan Stud pro-
ducer reveals that he is also the sire of AJS Moaddie (Af
Albahar) and AJS Gannas (Af Albahar), two Silver Sword
winners, plus AJS Berline (Af Albahar). The latter was
elected champion sprinter in Qatar.”
SEEKING AN OUTCROSS
Af Albahar never raced. Mohammed Hamad Khalifa Al
Attiyah recalls: “When we bought him, and he was bred
in the United Arab Emirates, it was with the idea of tap-
ping into a different bloodline. He represents an out-
cross with the majority of mares of either French or US
descent. This intuitive feeling has worked out well. As
he’s a stallion that tends to improve his stock. Moreover,
he imparts a lot of speed. His production line includes
many sprinters and milers, whereas some, of course,
stay 2,000m. Af Albahar came to us as an un-raced
horse. We attempted to put him back into training.
Yet we soon changed tack by packing him off to stud.
The Gr1 PA winning Sahab (Af Albahar) was bred by
my cousins. I’m glad that they are the owners of such a
good filly by Af Albahar. She’s a good advertisement for
her sire. The sire’s record across the board is a good one
with all types of mares. However, he does particularly
well when bred to sturdy mares boasting strong French
bloodlines, and with particular relevance to the mater-
nal side of the pedigree. The stallion seems to flourish
when bred to mares boasting the blood of Manganate
(Saint Laurent) and his sons in their pedigrees. This is
equally applicable to mares from the Akbar (Djelfor)
line. We are starting to see daughters of AF Albahar in
the breeding shed. I’m endeavouring to breed them to
the likes of Al Mamun Monlau (Munjiz) and Muraaqib
(Munjiz)... and I’m not afraid of in-breeding them, as
long as long as this doesn’t apply in the initial removes
of the pedigree. A daughter of AF Albahar could, for
example, be bred to Al Mourtajez (Dahess) [editor’s
note: this represents a 3x3 inbreeding to Amer]. I think
that Yazeed (Munjiz), too, has a lot going for him as he
was a very good horse. He’s a very interesting option.
His foals are magnificent. When it comes to these mat-
ing plans, it’s difficult to say which ones will deliver on
the racecourse: only the course of time and results on
the track will ultimately deliver their verdict. When it
comes to PA horses, I only endeavour to keep fillies/

ses porte-drapeau, il y a bien sûr AJS Saaeq qui a fait
sensation car il a battu les importés dans un Gr1 PA,
ce qui n’est pas courant pour un local bred. La veille
de ce fait d’armes, son mentor confiait : « Je veux ten-
ter ma chance. Si vous ne courez pas votre bon cheval
dans une bonne course, vous ne gagnez jamais ce type
d’épreuves. Il faut parfois savoir prendre des risques. »
Un pari payant. Pour Al Jeryan Stud, Af Albahar a
également donné AJS Moaddie (Af Albahar) et AJS
Gannas (Af Albahar), deux lauréats du Silver Sword, ou
encore AJS Berline (Af Albahar), qui a été élue cham-
pion sprinter au Qatar.
À LA RECHERCHE D’UN OUTCROSS
Af Albahar n’a jamais couru. Mohammed Hamad Khalifa
Al Attiyah se souvient : « Lorsque nous l’avons acheté, lui
qui a été élevé aux Émirats, c’était dans l’idée d’avoir un
courant de sang différent. Il est outcross avec la majorité
des juments de sang français ou américain. Et cette intui-
tion a bien fonctionné. C’est un étalon améliorateur. Par
ailleurs, il apporte beaucoup de vitesse. Dans sa produc-
tion, on trouve beaucoup de sprinters, de milers, mais
bien sûr certains tiennent 2.000m. Lorsqu’Af Albahar est
arrivé chez nous, il n’avait jamais couru. Mais nous avons
tout de même essayé de le remettre à l’entraînement,
avant de rapidement nous raviser et de le renvoyer au
haras. La gagnante de Gr1 Sahab (Af Albahar) a été éle-
vée par mes cousins. Je suis heureux qu’ils aient une si
bonne pouliche par Af Albahar. Elle fait une bonne publi-
cité à l’étalon. Il a bien croisé avec tous types de juments.
Mais particulièrement bien avec les poulinières bien
faites et dotées d’un pedigree français solide, notam-
ment au niveau de la famille maternelle. L’étalon semble
réussir avec les juments portant le sang de Manganate
(Saint Laurent) et de ses fils, mais aussi Akbar (Djelfor).
À présent, nous commençons à avoir des filles d’AF
Albahar au haras. J’essaye de les croiser avec Al Mamun
Monlau (Munjiz), Muraaqib (Munjiz)… Mais je ne crains
pas de faire des inbreedings, à condition qu’ils ne soient
pas trop proches. Une fille d’AF Albahar pourrait aller à
Al Mourtajez (Dahess) par exemple [d’où un inbreeding
en 3x3 sur Amer, ndlr]. Je trouve que Yazeed (Munjiz) est
lui aussi un très bon cheval. Une option très intéressante.
Les foals sont magnifiques. De tous ces croisements, dif-
ficiles de dire lesquels vont réussir en piste : le temps et
la compétition donneront leur verdict. Avec les pur-sang
arabes, je n’essaye de conserver que les femelles issues
de très bonnes familles. Si elles ont gagné, c’est mieux.
Mais je n’en fais pas un critère éliminatoire si elles ont un
grand pedigree. Enfin, j’accorde une importance toute
particulière à la conformation. Ici au Qatar, il faut des
chevaux vraiment sains… »

so much the better. Yet I don’t use this as a criterion for
selling my mares if they have great pedigrees. Lastly, I
attach particular importance to conformation. As, here
in Qatar, horses in rude health are a prerequisite...”
THE PASSION OF RACING
“We’ve been breeding horses, in the family, since the
early part of 2021. I’ve also been a long-standing own-
er. However, I only branched out as a trainer last year.
Furthermore, I really enjoy doing it. I’m happy with the
results and the way in which our horses are performing.
I enjoy training horses and wish to carry on doing so. I
didn’t learn the trade from another trainer. As I learned
on the job. There is no one size fits all approach. The
basics are the same, but everyone adapts in function
of what they have learned elsewhere. On each occa-
sion when afforded the opportunity of spending time
with other professional trainers, I paid attention to what
works. I feel like I’m improving over time, and by putting
things into practice. To have your own private training
centre, 30 minutes from Doha, is a stroke of luck. It was
my father who bought what was previously farm land. He
named the facility Al Jeryan Stud. Now the whole family
lives there. Working in a tranquil environment, coupled
to having a training track to yourself, and at the time
you want... is a big advantage to my way of thinking.
Furthermore, it’s not difficult to find staff in Qatar.”

LA PASSION DU GALOP
« Nous élevons en famille depuis le début des années
2021. Et cela fait longtemps que je suis propriétaire.
Mais j’ai vraiment commencé à entraîner moi-même
l’année dernière. Et je prends beaucoup de plaisir à
le faire. Je suis content des résultats et de la manière
dont nos chevaux se comportent. Je prends du plaisir
à entraîner et je veux continuer dans cette voie. Je n’ai
pas appris chez un autre entraîneur. Mon apprentissage
s’est fait sur le tas. Il n’y pas de méthode universelle.
Les bases sont les mêmes mais chacun adapte ce qu’il
a appris par ailleurs. Chaque fois que j’allais à l’entraî-
nement chez d’autres professionnels, je faisais atten-
tion aux détails, en essayant de voir ce qui fonctionne.
J’ai le sentiment de progresser au fil du temps, avec la
pratique. Avoir son propre centre d’entraînement privé,
à 30 mn de Doha, c’est une chance. C’est mon père qui
a acheté ce qui était alors les terres d’un agriculteur. Et
il l’a baptisé Al Jeryan Stud. Désormais, toute la famille
vit sur place. Travailler au calme, avoir la piste pour soi-
même, à l’heure qu’on veut… c’est un sacré avantage
je pense. Et au Qatar, il n’est pas difficile de trouver
du personnel.
Élever au Qatar, cela requiert certaines précautions.
L’été, il fait très chaud. Et il faut des écuries climati-
sées. C’est très important. J’aime importer des juments
pur-sang anglais pleines de bons étalons européens.
Elles poulinent ici au Qatar et cela permet d’avoir des

Breeding horses in Qatar requires taking certain pre-
cautions. As in summer it’s very hot. So you need
air-conditioned stables. This is very important. I like to
import English thoroughbred mares which are in-foal
to quality European stallions. They foal here in Qatar
and this enables us run their assimilated progeny in
races for the locally born and bred horses. If a mare
proves worthy of the opportunity, I would occasionally
send her back to Europe to be covered. Otherwise, I
use Qatari-based stallions. I own a horse acquired from
the Jim Bolger yard, Hall of Fame (Teofilo), who was
a Gr2 class performer in Ireland as a juvenile. An ac-
cident ended his career. He covers a few mares for us
every year. In total we have less than 30 mares. Three-
quarters of them are Purebred Arabians. The remaining
25 per cent are English thoroughbreds. I’m a believer
in quality rather than quantity. It’s very important to rear
them well. When it comes to training horses, we pick
up a lot of useful information relative to the breeding
of horses. You understand the importance of breeding
healthy horses. You’re aware of the faults/qualities of
your mares. Here, the grass doesn’t grow naturally as in
Europe. Therefore, the feeding process of the breeding
Hall of Fame when racing for Jim Bolger
stock must be monitored very carefully. Failing this, a
lot of problems will arise. I’m of the opinion that it’s
important to have enough paddocks of sufficient size.
I’m of the mindset that you shouldn’t keep horses in
very confined areas. As horses need to move around.
For that to happen you need space...”

“In Qatar, one denotes the presence of a group of
young people who are passionate about racing. Given,

localement. Si la jument le mérite, il m’arrive parfois
la renvoyer en Europe pour y être saillie. Sinon, j’uti-
lise des étalons stationnés au Qatar. J’ai d’ailleurs un
cheval que j’ai acheté chez Jim Bolger, Hall of Fame
(Teofilo), avec des performances au niveau Groupe à
2ans en Irlande. Un accident a mis fin à sa carrière. Il

ses juments. Ici, il n’y a pas d’herbe naturellement,
comme en Europe. Il faut donc suivre très attentive-
ment la nutrition des chevaux d’élevage. Sans cela, ils
ont beaucoup de problèmes. À mon sens, il est impor-
tant d’avoir des paddocks en nombre suffisant et de
taille suffisante. Mon expérience, c’est qu’il ne faut pas
élever sur de toutes petites surfaces. Les chevaux ont
besoin de bouger. Et pour cela, il faut de l’espace… »

« Au Qatar, il y a vraiment des jeunes passionnés par
les courses. Et puis les allocations progressent et c’est
un encouragement pour tout le monde. J’essaye d’éle-
ver le mieux possible, pour sortir des chevaux de bon
niveau. Je n’ai de cesse d’améliorer notre élevage, les
conditions d’entraînement… Le jour où j’aurai le cheval
qui convient, j’aimerais aller courir à l’étranger. Mais il
faut le bon profil. J’ai déjà des chevaux à l’entraînement
en Angleterre. Et en Irlande chez Joseph O’Brien. C’est

He speaks impeccable French and his English is
flawless. Abdulla Al Mulla has the physique of a rug-
by player and yet his passion is horse racing! The
young Qatari national is currently the driving force
behind two particularly innovative projects…
The Al Mulla family is the driving force behind the Al
Jasra Stud, which was responsible for several winners
during the meeting. We allude, in particular, to that of
the very impressive ‘maiden’ winner Bahar Al Jasra (Af
Albahar), which was gained under Maxime Guyon. The
interests of the family breeding operation extend to
France, where they board several horses at the Haras
de Thouars, and namely Mekhbatt (Burning Sand),
Kasih (Amer) and Haashed (Amer)…
“My father and my brother founded the Al Jasra Stud in
2010, with the optic of mainly breeding PA horses. My
brother Ali, Hilal Kobeissi and myself are striving to intro-
duce new owners to the sport. We are targeting young
people in particular. However, the Qatari racing scene
isn’t necessarily a familiar one beyond its strict circle of

pour jouer au rugby, mais sa passion, ce sont les
courses ! Le jeune Qatari est à la tête de deux pro-
jets particulièrement innovants…
La famille d’Abdulla Al Mulla est la tête d’Al Jasra
Stud, d’où proviennent plusieurs lauréats durant le
meeting. Et notamment Bahar Al Jasra (Af Albahar)
qui a fait une démonstration dans un maiden avec
Maxime Guyon. Cet élevage familial a plusieurs éta-
lons stationnés en France, au haras de Thouars notam-
ment, avec Mekhbatt (Burning Sand), Kasih (Amer),
Haashed (Amer)…
« Mon père et mon frère ont lancé Al Jasra Stud en
2010, principalement pour élever des pur-sang arabes.
Mon frère Ali, Hilal Kobeissi et moi-même voulons in-
troduire au propriétariat de nouvelles personnes. Des
jeunes en particulier. Or les courses au Qatar ne sont
pas nécessairement très connues en dehors du cercle
des initiés. Et pour se lancer, acheter directement un

conoscenti. Furthermore, buying a horse directly at pub-
lic auction is no easy task for a young person. So we
have set up a racing syndicate – Nibras Racing Syndicate
– around a year ago, and based on the British model
which works so well. It has 25 members. Most have not
had the opportunity of owning race horses. God willing,
the results are starting to bear fruit. As we already have
had a winner. The horse in question, Nuvolari (Time
Test), made it three wins on the bounce after impress-
ing on the opening meeting of the Amir Sword Festival.
We currently have five horses in training. Our aim is to
continue buying so as to unearth a really good pros-
pect. It’s not easy when you ascertain the strength of the
horses-in-training market. At present, our waiting list is
as long as our current membership. This is promising
and so we are aiming to increase our syndication ac-
tivities. That is by striving to have better quality horses.
Especially, since Qatari rules enable you to create a syn-
dicate without setting up a company at the same time.
Regarding English thoroughbreds, we mainly buy from
Tattersalls, with the help of the Newmarket-based trainer
Hilal Kobeissi. We also buy a few horses from the Arqana
sales. Regarding PA horses, the most obvious thing is
to breed them. This makes it possible to target the rac-
es tailored to horses which are born and bred locally.
In France, we board mares at the Élevage Panjshir, near
Agen. In future we would like to have horses in training
in Great Britain. Hence our yearling purchases.”

y a un an environ, en nous inspirant de ce qui marche
si bien en Grande-Bretagne. Il compte 25 membres.

des galopeurs. Grâce à Dieu, les résultats sont au ren-
dez-vous. Nous avons déjà un gagnant. Nuvolari (Time

Nous avons une liste d’attente aussi longue que celle
de nos membres. C’est prometteur et nous voulons
donc accroître notre activité de syndication, en essayant
d’avoir des chevaux de meilleure qualité. Surtout qu’ici
au Qatar, on peut lancer un syndicat sans créer une
société. Pour les pur-sang anglais, nous achetons prin-
cipalement chez Tattersalls, grâce à Hilal Kobeissi qui
entraîne à Newmarket. Et nous achetons un peu chez
Arqana aussi. Avec les pur-sang arabes, le plus évident,
c’est de les élever. Cela permet de viser le programme
réservé aux nés et élevés localement. En France, nous
avons des poulinières stationnées près d’Agen, à l’éle-
vage du Panjshir. À l’avenir, nous voudrions avoir des
chevaux à l’entraînement en Grande-Bretagne. D’où
nos achats de yearlings… »

SELLING HORSES ON WHATSAPP… AND IT
WORKS!
The Middle East Equine Auction WhatsApp group
numbers 2,500 members. This makes it possible to
sell around 150 PA horses and English thoroughbreds
per annum. This concept, the brainchild of Abdulla Al
Mulla in 2018, has been responsible for selling horses
for owners and breeders from different Gulf states such
as Al Shahania Stud, Shadwell, Al Shaqab Racing, Al
Asayl, Umm Qarn Farm, Sheail Bin Khalifa Al Kuwari…:
“We aren’t alone in having recourse to the online sales
market in the Gulf region. However, our position has
been strengthened because we cater for a strong sup-
ply chain while, at the same time, dedicating a lot of
time to our potential buyers. This is the reason why, next
month, we will definitely be switching from WhatsApp
to our own dedicated app. We cater for the Gulf region
of course. Yet, we have also sold some horses to certain
Polish, French, US and British buyers… Our best ad-
vertisement remains the victories gained certain horses
sold under our system. We have even sold some hors-
es twice, and, on the second occasion, they fetched a
greater price in the wake of having gained an extra win
under their belts! One of our core strengths is to have
forged a partnership, here in Qatar, with the Al Shaqab
Equine Veterinary Hospital. This clinic has a very good
reputation. And all Qatari horses that come up for sale
are examined by their veterinary team. Regarding those
horses based in the United Emirates, we work with the
local vets in that country.”

Sur WhatsApp, le groupe Middle East Equine Auction
rassemble 2.500 membres. Et il permet de vendre en-
viron 150 chevaux par an, pur-sang arabes et pur-sang
anglais. Ce concept lancé par Abdulla Al Mulla en 2018
a déjà permis de vendre des chevaux pour des proprié-
taires et éleveurs de différents pays du Golfe comme Al
Shahania Stud, Shadwell, Al Shaqab Racing, Al Asayl,
Umm Qarn Farm, Sheail bin Khalifa Al Kuwari… : « Nous
ne sommes pas seuls sur le marché des ventes en ligne
dans le Golfe. Mais notre position s’est renforcée car
nous avons une offre fournie tout en consacrant beau-
coup d’énergie aux potentiels acheteurs. C’est la raison
pour laquelle, le mois prochain, nous allons certaine-
ment passer de WhatsApp à une application dédiée.
Nous vendons dans la région du Golfe bien sûr. Mais
nous en avons aussi vendu à des Polonais, des Français,
des Américains, des Britanniques… Notre meilleure
publicité reste les victoires de certains chevaux vendus
par notre système. Certains sont passés deux fois chez
nous et ils ont été cédés plus cher lors du deuxième
passage, avec une victoire en plus dans leur palmarès !
Une de nos forces, c’est d’avoir mis en place un parte-
nariat ici, au Qatar, avec l’Al Shaqab Equine Veterinary
Hospital. Cette clinique a une très bonne réputation.
Et tous les chevaux qataris qui passent en vente sont
examinés par leur équipe. Pour ceux basés aux Émirats,
nous travaillons avec des vétérinaires là-bas aussi. »

SKA DE L’AIGLE PUTS FRENCH PA BREEDING
IN THE SPOTLIGHT
SKA DE L’AIGLE ET L’ÉLEVAGE FRANÇAIS À L’HONNEUR
French-breds were successful during the Amir
Sword meeting and not just at black type level. We
allude, in particular, to the victories of Nijinski Al
Maury (Renée-Laure Koch), Bahar Al Jasra (Abbas
Al Mulla) and Divine Princess (Élodie and Bruno
Bellaud). Although pride of place goes to Ska de
l’Aigle (Al Mourtajez) following his H.H. The Amir
Silver Sword exploit.
It’s not classed as a black heat but it’s the equivalent of
winning a PA Group race! In fact, this race was won in
2022 by Moshrif (Dahess), himself a top PA performer
in his own right. Trainer François Rohaut again repeated
the feat this year via the representative of the young
owner Abdullah Bin Fahad Al Attiyah, Ska de l’Aigle.
Clearly, the Pau handler didn’t come all the way to
Doha for nothing! He said: “Ska de l’Aigle is a good
horse. I wasn’t supposed to run him at Pau on February
1 . However, I changed my mind because I thought he

needed a run under his belt before coming here. Today
he showed a completely different level of from, having

Les "FR" ont été performants lors du mee-
ting de l’Amir Sword et pas uniquement dans les
épreuves black types. Avec, en particulier, les vic-

à un Groupe ! L’an dernier, cette course avait été rem-
portée par Moshrif (Dahess), un des meilleurs pur-sang
arabes actuels. François Rohaut a remis le couvert cette
année avec Ska de l’Aigle, un représentant du jeune
propriétaire Abdullah bin Fahad Al Attiyah. Le Palois
n’a pas fait le déplacement jusqu’à Doha pour rien ! Il
nous a confié : « Ska de l’Aigle est un bon cheval. Je ne
devais pas le courir à Pau le 1er février. Mais j’ai changé
d’avis car je me suis dit qu’il avait besoin d’effectuer
une rentrée avant de venir ici. Aujourd’hui, il a montré
un tout autre niveau après avoir bénéficié de la course

had having the perfect race. The still immature Al Riffaa
is also a smart customer. It’s very important for owners
to have the opportunity of winning this type of race.
To win a race bearing the ‘Sword’ label is great.” Ska
de l’Aigle is part of the first generation of horses bred
by Patrick Lombrail at the Haras de l’Aigle. He was ac-
quired by Paul Basquin from the stud on behalf of his
current owner. The Haras de Saubouas supremo also
bred the third, Al Riffaa, for his clients. Ska de l’Aigle
is a son of Al Mourtajez (Dahess). In fact, two sons of
the Al Shaqab Racing stallion, based at the Haras de
Thouars, made it onto the podium of the 2023 edition
of the H.H. the Amir Silver Sword. The grandam, Saka
(Tornado de Syrah), has produced the excellent Soko
(Nieshan). The latter is the dual winner of the Doha
Cup - Prix Manganate (Gr1 PA).
A FIRST FOR PATRICK LOMBRAIL
Patrick Lombrail told us: “This is my first ‘homebred’
winner of a major race. Even if I have experienced the
joys of victory via Fleur du Soleil (Munjiz) prior to this.
This filly, acquired as a 2-year-old, later went through
the ring at the sales last year. Penny (Nieshan), a quality
colt, was among the first horses which I bred, although
he later got injured. I have also bred the dual Qatari
winning Jefred (TM Fred Texas... Having been invited
to attend a conference on Arabian horses in the United
Arab Emirates around two months ago, I gave my in-
put as a breeder. I gave a short presentation on the
research undertaken on the ‘speed’ gene. According to
Emmeline Hill (University College Dublin), 30 per cent
of a horse’s ability can be attributed to genetic factors.
I’m particularly interested in the remaining 70 per cent
of the equation. That is to say: feeding, the care of the
horse/weaning processes, plus the effects of the horse’s
environment, and the animal’s own character. Ending
on a humorous note, I ventured the submission that
speed gene was in fact inextricably linked to that of the
breeder.” Despite the fact that Ska de l’Aigle’s dam, Sia
(Akbar), was later sold, Patrick Lombrail is counting on
the fact that: “Ska de l’Aigle’s sister, Syracuse (Dahess),
is due to foal imminently. I made the deliberate choice
not to race her, having instead saved her for breeding
shed. My broodmares include Maasara (Mahabb),
whose son Maador (Dormane) made a winning de-
but at the United Arab Emirates track, Al Ain (dirt), on
January 21 . She also produced Maadi (Dormane) for

me, and her offspring, and a colt due to go to the sales
in the autumn. I also own the full sister of Al Nachmiya,
Al Mouzdahira (Azadi) Lastly, I have acquired Sante
Al Maury (Munjiz) and No Drug Al Maury (Mahabb)...

UNE PREMIÈRE POUR PATRICK LOMBRAIL
Patrick Lombrail nous a confié : « C’est mon premier
gagnant "né et élevé" dans une épreuve d’importance.
Même si j’avais connu les joies de la victoire auparavant
avec Fleur du Soleil (Munjiz), une pouliche achetée à
2ans et revendue l’année dernière aux ventes. Parmi les
premiers chevaux que j’ai élevés, j’ai eu un poulain de
qualité, Penny (Nieshan), qui s’est ensuite blessé. Mais
aussi Jefred (TM Fred Texas), qui a gagné deux courses
au Qatar… (…) J’ai été invité aux Émirats arabes unis
il y a deux mois environ, pour des conférences sur les
chevaux arabes. Je suis intervenu en tant qu’éleveur.
J’avais fait un petit topo sur la recherche du gène de
la vitesse. Selon les travaux d’Emmeline Hill (University
College Dublin), la part du patrimoine génétique dans
la performance du cheval approche les 30 %. Je m’in-
téresse donc aux 70 % restants. Soit l’alimentation, les
soins, le sevrage, les effets du milieu et le caractère.
Pour conclure avec humour, j’avais soumis d’associer
le gène de la vitesse à celui de l’éleveur. » Si la mère
de Ska de l’Aigle, Sia (Akbar), a été vendue, Patrick
Lombrail a placé son espoir sur « la sœur de Ska de
l’Aigle qui s’appelle Syracuse (Dahess) et qui devrait
pouliner sous peu. C’est une pouliche que je n’avais
pas fait courir, la gardant pour l’élevage. J’ai Maasara
(Mahabb), dont le fils Maador (Dormane) a gagné pour
ses débuts aux Émirats, le 21 janvier dernier, sur le dirt
d’Al Ain. Elle m’a également donné Maadi (Dormane),
un poulain qui va aller aux ventes cet automne. J’ai aussi
Al Mouzdahira (Azadi), la propre sœur d’Al Nachmiya.

THE AL UQDA PROJECT SHOWS THAT QATAR IS
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
AVEC AL UQDA, LE QATAR BÂTIT UN AVENIR POUR SES COURSES
The equestrian complex at Al Uqda at Al Khor is 45
kms north of Doha. Initially, conceived as a training cen-
tre for endurance horses, the growing demands placed
on Qatar’s only racetrack at Al Rayyan were such that
there was a pressing need for another racecourse. The
installation of a 2,000m turf track, coupled to a 1,900m
fibre-sand inner course, enabled racing to get under-
way there over two years ago, which initially took the
form of a five-race trial card on January 31st. It proved a
success and racing now takes place there on Saturdays,
which follow on from the twice weekly fixtures, on
Wednesday and Thursday, at Al Rayyan. Al Uqda host-
ed 15 race meetings last season, a figure that has since
risen to 17, and it’s anticipated that this figure will rise
further as the site undergoes further development. The
track’s primary function is to support Al Rayyan, which
takes the form of staging racing over a three week pe-
riod in the run up to the H.H. The Amir Sword Festival,
as this enables the grass surface at Al Rayyan to be in
prime nick for this prestigious meeting. Looking to the
future, Al Uqda may be deployed in a similar role in
December, and this in the lead-up to the International
Derby Meeting at the end of the year.
Leading trainer Alban de Mieulle was unstinting in his
praise for the new track and he said: “It’s very nice. My

Le complexe d’Al Uqda est basé à Al Khor, c’est-à-
dire à 45 km au nord de Doha. Au départ, il fut conçu
comme un site d’entraînement pour l’endurance.
Mais la population croissante à l’hippodrome d’Al
Rayyan a imposé la nécessité imminente d’un nouvel
hippodrome. Avec une piste de 2.000m en gazon et
de 1.900m en sable fibrée, les courses ont débuté à
Al Uqda par une réunion de cinq épreuves le 30 janvier
2021. Cet événement fut un succès et désormais, on
y court le samedi, en complément des deux réunions
du mercredi et du jeudi à Al Rayyan. La saison passée,
Al Uqda a accueilli 15 réunions. Contre 17 pour la sai-
son en cours et encore plus à l’avenir avec le dévelop-
pement du site. L’hippodrome a pour premier objectif
de venir en soutien à celui d’Al Rayyan, en le soula-
geant des épreuves organisées lors des trois semaines
précédant le H.H. The Amir Sword Festival. Ainsi, le
gazon de la piste de Doha est au meilleur de sa forme
pour le grand rendez-vous. À l’avenir, cela pourrait être
aussi le cas pour les meetings de décembre en amont
de la réunion des Derby de fin d’année.
Entraîneur tête de liste, Alban de Mieulle ne tarit pas
d’éloges au sujet du nouvel hippodrome : « C’est
très bien. À mon sens, la surface de la piste fibrée est
meilleure que celle d’Al Rayyan. Le premier champ de

personal opinion is that the all-weather surface at Al
Uqda is better than its Al Rayyan counterpart. The Al
Rayyan facility is 20 years old and its grass track needs
upgrading. However, they don’t have time to do the
work as the season is very short. I understand this situa-
tion. So we now have two racecourses. I hope that this
will facilitate the improvements at Al Rayyan.”
The stabling area at Al Uqda is subdivided into eight
barns, with each unit comprising 15 boxes, for a total of
480 boxes. Each stabling block has its own horse-walk-
er and equine swimming pool. The indoor area also
hosts the sales which fall under the QREC. Provision
has also been made for a veterinary facility, an isolation
unit and stable staff living quarters, whereas the 120
stables which make up block D are for the sole use of
horses on race-days.
Currently around 360 horses, split between 15 trainers,
are trained at Al Quda. Some are very small scale oper-
ations, whereas others oversee the satellite operations
of the big multiples. Éric Lemartinel, whom we associ-
ate with the horses of Al Shaqab, is the most notable
presence – this concern being the only one among the
country’s top owners not to have its own private train-
ing centre. The handler also oversees the Al Shaqab
horses trained at Al Rayyan Park. His need to expand
meant that he was happy to split his increasing number
of horses between the two sites. Having availed himself
to two barns, it should be pointed out that the journey
between the sites doesn’t faze him in the least.
A NEW GRANDSTAND AND TRACK EXTENSION
WORKS ARE ON THE CARDS
Now in summer recess, the success of Al Uqda has en-
tailed further government support, and a new grand-
stand is being built at the beginning of the straight.

Les écuries d’Al Uqda sont regroupées par bloc de huit
barns, avec 15 boxes dans chaque cas. Soit un total
de 480 boxes. Chaque bloc a un marcheur et une pis-
cine. Les espaces intérieurs accueillent les ventes aux
enchères du Qrec. Il y a un espace vétérinaire, une zone
d’isolement et des logements pour les grooms. Les 120
boxes du bloc D sont entièrement réservés aux che-
vaux qui viennent le jour des courses.
À l’heure actuelle, environ 360 chevaux sont entraînés
à Al Uqda par une quinzaine d’entraîneurs. Certains ont
de petits effectifs. D’autres sont à la tête d’antennes
de grosses écuries. Le plus important est certainement
Éric Lemartinel, entraîneur pour Al Shaqab, qui est le
seul acteur majeur à ne pas disposer de son propre
centre d’entraînement. L’entraîneur est aussi à la tête
de l’effectif d’Al Shaqab basé à Al Rayyan Park. Il a
saisi l’opportunité de répartir son effectif en croissance
dans deux endroits. Il utilise actuellement deux barns
et le trajet entre les deux hippodromes ne lui pose pas
de problème.
UNE NOUVELLE TRIBUNE ET UNE EXTENSION DE
LA PISTE
Al Uqda est fermé pour l’été. Sa réussite a été sy-
nonyme d’un soutien grandissant de la part du gou-
vernement, avec une nouvelle tribune au début de
la ligne droite. Le visiteur peut trouver cet emplace-
ment étrange, étant donné que la tribune ne touche
pas cette piste à main droite. Mais il faut savoir que le

Visitors will find this siting perplexing, given its posi-
tioning which is at odds with a right-handed track, but
the explanation goes hand-in-hand with the fact that
the course will be the subject of extension works. The
QREC Handicapper Marcus Weedon explained: “In the
wake of the alterations, the straight will stretch out to
600m. The aim is for the whole track to develop into a
far bigger ‘oval’ shaped facility than that at Al Rayyan.
The uphill finish works really well, although the gradient
is more pronounced on the turf course, as its equivalent
on the all-weather course has been artificially levelled
out. The back stretch will also be the subject of exten-
sion works. This will facilitate 2,000m races from the
back straight extension to the new grandstand. There’s
talk of also installing a 1,000m straight course, which
would start at the backstretch extension and finish just
before the home turn. It sounds unconventional, but
you have similar sprint courses in place at Sandown
Park and Longchamp. It’s the only way that you can race
on a straight track without building a new racecourse.”
Regarding Al Uqda’s potential, he added: “There are
so many things you can do there, as it’s situated on a
big site, with nothing, as yet, around it, whereas, you’re
fenced-in at Al Rayyan. There’s no scope for further de-
velopment there.”
The safety limit is 14 runners per race. This is the best
form of compromise given that the width of the turf
track is a mere 18m wide. Although the rails can be
moved in order to accommodate surface wear and re-
pair and course alterations. The new grandstand will
accommodate areas for jockeys and stewards alike.
A weighing room will also be part of the new set-up.

d’une extension. Ainsi, on pourra courir 2.000m depuis
le fond de l’hippodrome jusqu’aux tribunes. Et on parle
aussi d’une extension supplémentaire pour atteindre
1.000m de ligne droite, qui partira de la fin de l’exten-
sion d’en face pour finir dans le premier tournant. Cela
peut paraître bizarre, mais on trouve des parcours de
sprint similaire à Sandown et Longchamp. C’est la seule
manière d’avoir une ligne droite ici sans bâtir un nouvel
hippodrome. » Au sujet du potentiel d’Al Uqda, Marcus
Weedon explique : « Son utilité est évidente. Car les
possibilités sont nombreuses sur ce site. Il y a beau-
coup de place tout autour, alors qu’Al Rayyan est limité
dans son agrandissement éventuel. »
La limite est de 14 partants par course. C’est le meil-
leur compromis pour une piste de 18m de large. Le rail
peut se déplacer pour l’entretien et le changement de
la piste. La nouvelle tribune va offrir des zones d’ac-
cueil pour les jockeys et les commissaires. Il en sera de
même pour la salle des balances. Pour l’instant, tout
cela est dans une structure temporaire, avec l’analyse
des photos d’arrivée.
AL UQDA SOUTIENT LA BASE DE LA PYRAMIDE
Afin d’accroître encore le nombre de meetings, qui
pourrait atteindre le nombre de 30, l’éclairage sera

AL UQDA UNDERPINS THE BASE OF THE RACING
PYRAMID
In order to increase the number of meetings even further,
possibly to 30, floodlights will have to be installed in the
coming years, and particularly relative to the timing of
Ramadan, which will fall earlier in the year, bearing in mind
Al Uqda’s peak racing period which begins in February.
The current lack of a floodlights restricts Al Uqda to sev-
en-race cards, whereas Al Rayyan is capable of staging up
to ten races per meeting. Marcus Weedon affirmed that
Al Uqda aims to cater for the grassroots, which means that
black type races will strictly be off limits. He elaborated:
“Prize money levels are slightly less prize than those at Al
Rayyan. We need to cater for trainers at the grassroots
end of the scale. We need to keep in mind the depth
of the scale of the various parties involved in the sport.
We’re proud of the sheer diversity of the ownership base,
and the racing opportunities afforded to their horses.
Horses are balloted out but this only applies to a few rac-
es. Our races are well subscribed throughout the season,
but we’re pleased that the number of horses balloted out
has been reduced because of the advent of Al Uqda.”
The way forward for Qatar to reach the next level interna-
tionally is to build an entirely new racecourse, This is cur-
rently just at the discussion stage but, given the success
of the 2022 World Cup, the rise in prize money levels,
and the general upswing of horse racing in the country as
a whole, it is hard not to envisage this becoming reality.

courir des épreuves black types : « Les allocations y
sont légèrement inférieures. Nous avons besoin de la
base des entraîneurs. Il faut avoir de la diversité dans
le profil des personnes impliquées. Nous sommes fiers
d’avoir autant de propriétaires ici. Ils ont tous des op-
portunités pour courir. Il y a des éliminations, mais seu-
lement dans quelques courses. Et grâce à l’arrivée d’Al
Uqda, il est en réduction. Le nombre de partant est bon
tout au long de la saison. »
Pour faire progresser le Qatar jusqu’au niveau supé-
rieur, il faut bâtir un nouvel hippodrome. Des discus-
sions sont en cours, suite à la réussite de la Coupe du
monde. Les investissements et les allocations sont en
hausse. Ce qui apporte une dynamique au sport hip-
pique dans tout le pays. Et les ambitions des Qataris
n’ont jamais semblé aussi proches d’être réalisées.

In a race in which nobody wanted to make the pace,
the Brazilian rider Bernardo Pinheiro had no hesitation
in ensuring that his mount, Ajrad Athbah (Af Albahar),
was racing at the front end of the race, along the rails.
The Yas Racing representative subsequently had the
lead whisked off him by Reem Baynounah (No Risk
Al Maury), with the latter subsequently dictating the
pace, having thrust himself in the thick of the action.
Although the latter weakened progressively and was
flagging on exiting the final turn. Ajrad Athbah then
upped the ante by unleashing a murderous burst
which enabled him to gain a decisive advantage.
Despite the attacks of Izadi Star (Azadi) on the inside,
followed by those of Mujeeb (Dahess) and Somoud
(Munjiz) on the outside, the Majed Al Jahouri charge
imperiously surged his way to a first PA Group win. It
must be said that the winner was something of a sur-
prise package. As, in three prior attempts at this level,
Ajrad Athbah had failed to get beyond fifth. After his
2022 victory aboard Harrab (Bibi de Carrère), jockey
Bernardo Pinheiro doubled his winning tally in this
race in one fell swoop.

Dans une course où personne ne voulait prendre
les devants, le jockey brésilien Bernardo Pinheiro n’a
pas hésité à placer Ajrad Athbah (Af Albahar) aux
avant-postes, le long de la lice. Le représentant de Yas
Racing a ensuite été relayé en pleine piste par Reem
Baynounah (No Risk Al Maury) qui a imposé son rythme.
L’animateur a progressivement cédé à la sortie du tour-
nant final. Ajrad Athbah a alors placé une accélération
brutale, prenant un avantage qui s’est révélé décisif.
Malgré les attaques d’Izadi Star (Azadi) à son intérieur,
puis celles de Mujeeb (Dahess) et de Somoud (Munjiz)
à l’extérieur, le pensionnaire de Majed Al Jahouri s’est
montré impérial pour remporter son premier Groupe.
Un peu à la surprise générale, il faut le dire. En trois sor-
ties à ce niveau, Ajrad Athbah n’avait pas réussi à faire
mieux que cinquième. Après sa victoire en 2022 avec
Harrab (Bibi de Carrère) dans cette même épreuve, le
jockey Bernardo Pinheiro double la mise.
UNE TACTIQUE DE COURSE PAYANTE
Bernardo Pinheiro réalise la meilleure saison de sa

Bernardo Pinheiro is enjoying the best season of his
career. The winning jockey and brilliantly inspired
to boot, told our Emirati colleagues: “I’m delighted
and wish to thank all those who have supported me
and had faith in me. I won this same race last year for
the same trainer, although the horse was in a differ-
ent ownership. I was very confident before the race,
because even though my horse wasn’t a leading con-
tender on paper, it was noticeable when studying the
formbook that there was no obvious front runner ca-
pable of setting a true gallop. So I took it upon myself
to get a good start on the winner which would take
me the front end of the race, and this before another
horse, and one with more tactical speed, took over at
the head of affairs. Going to the final 600m, I knew
that my horse had enough in the locker when it came
to producing a finish. In the final 200m, he changed
leads and proved a superb winner. I’m really pleased
by the way in which the race unfolded and worked in
my favour, and for the fact that everything panned out
in such a way as to produce a winning outcome.”
THE BROTHER OF MANADE ATHBAH
Ajrad Athbah is a son of the Haras de Thouars sire
Af Albahar (Amer). The dam, Manade (Dormane),
won in France following a triumph on the Pompadour
all-weather. She has also produced Manade Athbah
(Khoutoubia), the Hatta International Stakes (Gr1 PA)
third, who incidentally was trained by Sandrine
Tarrou. The grandam, Super Nana (Tidjani), has
yielded Mansper (Dormane), the Grand Prix de Son
Altesse Royale le Prince Moulay Rachid victor, plus
Nadjel (Djelfor). The latter won the Emirates Arabian
International Stakes (Gr2 PA). Ajrad Athbah is a de-
scendant of the much heralded Jaffa du Berlais (Baj),
herself the source of numerous black type performers,
and the dam of Chaikh Man (Dormane). The latter
won 11 races and was placed at Gr1 PA level.

sources pour bien finir. À 200m, il a changé de jambe et

THE “FRENCH-BRED” NADELSHIBA LORDS IT AT AL AIN!

He’s really in his element when it comes to racing on
dirt at Al Ain. As, in four outings at the Emirati track, the
French-bred Nadelshiba (Majd Al Arab) has won three
times. Furthermore, he has yet to finish out of the first
three... in the colours of Elbashir Salem Elhrari. After
beginning his career in Britain, the 6-year-old bay has
immediately found his feet in the United Arab Emirates
(UAE). Relative to the March 10 meeting, he claimed
th
his first Group PA win, having delivered from the front,
and in the manner of a tough customer.
After bouncing out of the gates, Nadelshiba found
himself in the thick of things at the front end of the
race, when a group of six horses were racing virtually
on the same line. With 600m to go, Nadelshiba edged
his way into a slight lead, and he was still in front on
hitting the straight – under the energetic promptings
of rider Antonio Fresu. Although Héros de Lagarde (Af
Albahar), on his outside, seemed to be travelling the
stronger of this duo. The pair went head to head and
dug deep, but the outcome was never in doubt as far
as Nadelshiba was concerned. As, on reaching the wire,
the Ahmed Al Shemaili charge had pulled over a length
clear. Héros de Lagarde was second. Oss (Valiant Boy)

La piste en dirt d’Al Ain est vraiment son jardin. En
quatre sorties sur l’hippodrome émirati, le français de
naissance Nadelshiba (Majd Al Arab) a gagné trois
fois. Et il n’est jamais sorti des trois premiers... sous les
couleurs d’Elbashir Salem Elhrari. Après un début de
carrière en Angleterre, ce bai désormais âgé de 6ans
a tout de suite trouvé ses marques aux Émirats. Le 10
mars, il a décroché son premier Groupe PA à l’issue
d’une course menée aux avant-postes, à la manière
d’un cheval dur.
Rapidement sorti de sa stalle, Nadelshiba s’est retrouvé
sur la ligne des premiers, au milieu, six chevaux menant
de front. À 600m du but, il a pris un léger ascendant
et s’est annoncé en tête dans la ligne droite finale,
bien sollicité par son jockey, Antonio Fresu. Héros de
Lagarde (Af Albahar), à son extérieur, semblait encore
aller librement. Les deux chevaux se sont livré un beau
combat, mais Nadelshiba n’a jamais vraiment été me-
nacé. Le pensionnaire d’Ahmed Al Shemaili passe le
poteau avec un peu plus d’une longueur d’avance.
Héros de Lagarde est deuxième. Oss (Valiant Boy) finit
bien à l’extérieur et prend la troisième place, aux dé-
pens de Fleur du Soleil (Munjiz).

THE NEPHEW OF AL HIBAAB
Born and bred in France by Shadwell, Nadelshiba
is son of the Haras du Grand Courgeon sire Majd Al
Arab (Amer). He’s the second French-registered prod-
uct of his dam, Qusoor (Djebbel). The latter won her
sole career outing on the Wolverhampton all-weather
for Shadwell, and is the mare’s first winner. The gran-
dam Ietlato de Carrère (Tidjani) won the Al Maktoum
Challenge Stakes at Frankfurt. In the breeding shed,
she has yielded Nesnaas (Jehol de Cardonne), a dual
runner-up of the Emirates Championship (Gr1 PA) at
Abu Dhabi, and Al Hibaab (Al Sakbe). The latter won
the Dubai International Stakes (Gr1 PA) at Newbury for
the late Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, having mastered
Djet Taouy (Dahess). This maternal line is that of the out-
standing Akim de Ducor (Akbar), as Nadelshiba’s great
grandam is none other than Guetlato (Grabiec). The
latter has also produced Hamana (Goumri): the foun-
dation mare of the Élevage Mels’ breeding operation.

JUGURTHA DE MONLAU CONSERVE SON TITRE !
Before being exported to the United Arab Emirates,
Jugurtha de Monlau (Al Mamun Monlau) kick-started
his career in France with David Morisson, where he
won the first ever PA race to be staged at Vichy. It
also marked the first French success for his current
and second owner, Helal Alalawi. Jugurtha de Monlau
was subsequently second to Hattal (Mahabb) in the
UAE President Cup - UK Arabian Derby (Gr1 PA) in
September 2020. Fast-forwarding to March 5th 2022,
and now aged six, he finally savoured his Red Letter
Day under the Yas Racing banner, and this after a pil-
lar-to-post win in the Al Maktoum Challenge Round
3 (Gr1 PA). And a year later – after four unsuccessful
prior attempts – Jugurtha de Monlau resumed win-
ning ways by defending his title in the Al Maktoum
Challenge Round 3...
CREATING SOME IMPRESSION!
He proved very impressive under Patrick Dobbs on this
March 4 meeting. The Yas Racing charge took the race
th
by the scruff of the neck from the get-go, having dictated
terms at a steady pace. At the entrance of the straight, he
literally sprouted wings which enabled him to dance six
lengths clear of his rivals. The Jean-Claude Pecout runner
will now attempt to emulate that feat in the Kahayla Classic
(Gr1 PA) at the end of the month. Kerless del Roc (Dahess)
and Jethjath (Azadi) were respectively second and third.

Avant d’être exporté aux Emirats arabes unis,
Jugurtha de Monlau (Al Mamun Monlau) a commencé
sa carrière en France, chez David Morisson, et il a d’ail-
leurs remporté la première course de pur-sang arabes
de l’histoire de l’hippodrome de Vichy. Ce fut aussi le
premier succès français de son deuxième propriétaire,
Helal Alalawi. Jugurtha de Monlau s’est ensuite clas-
sé deuxième d’Hattal (Mahabb) dans l’UAE President
Cup - UK Arabian Derby (Gr1 PA) en septembre 2020.
Le 5 mars 2022, à l’âge de 6ans, il a enfin atteint le
graal sous la casaque de Yas Racing, en remportant
de bout en bout l’Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3
(Gr1 PA). Un an plus tard – après quatre sorties in-
fructueuses –, Jugurtha de Monlau a renoué avec la
victoire en conservant son titre dans l’Al Maktoum
Challenge Round 3…
QUELLE IMPRESSION !
Le 4 mars 2023, il s’est montré très impressionnant sous
la selle de Patrick Dobbs. Le cheval de Yas Racing a pris
les commandes dès le départ, menant à une allure ré-
gulière. À l’entrée de la ligne droite, il a démarré et a lit-
téralement fait exploser le peloton pour l’emporter de
six longueurs. Le pensionnaire de Jean-Claude Pecout
essaiera de faire aussi bien dans le Kahayla Classic
(Gr1 PA) à la fin du mois. Kerless del Roc (Dahess) a
conclu deuxième devant Jethjath (Azadi).

BACK TO HIS VERY BEST
Thierry Delègue, the racing manager of Yas Racing, the
concern which owns Jugurtha de Monlau, said: “It’s a
great victory. He won this race last year before subse-
quently languishing in the doldrums. So see him back in
good condition, and resuming winning ways, is a great
satisfaction. Especially as he was up against strong oppo-
sition. So it’s a victory which opens the door to the way
ahead. We’ll see how the horse comes out of the race, but
the next logical step is to go for the Kahayla Classic (Gr1).”
AN EXTRAORDINARY TALE
Jean-Claude Pecout, the trainer, enjoyed a 1-2 in this
race, and in March 2022 he told us: “The horse was af-
flicted by a paralysis of the larynx problem. He was op-
erated on him three times. Three and a half months ago,
Jugurtha de Monlau was back walking and trotting. We
re-educated him regarding the breathing process by
adopting a slowly-slow-
ly approach. Today, we
can see the fruit of the
team’s labours relative
to the work done with
him in the morning. He
will have his comeback
race in January 2022
over 2,000m – and on
dirt – so as to give him a
race in public. The idea
was to ascertain how he
would react. The horse
was a creditable third.
He subsequently contested the H.H. The President
Cup (Gr1 PA) – over 2,200m on turf – in which he was
fifth. The trip was perhaps on the long side, and the
second race back after a lengthy absence is never a
straight forward matter. Regarding the Al Maktoum
Challenge Round 3 (Gr1 PA) – over 2,000m –, I thought
he would make it onto the podium. However, I never
envisaged him winning (....). So what he achieved is
pretty amazing.”
BEARING THE CLEAR “BOURDETTE” STAMP
Jugurtha de Monlau was bred in France by Robert
and Marie-Ange Bourdette; something which applies
equally to his Haras du Grand Courgeon-based sire Al
Mamun Monlau (Munjiz), where he stands on behalf
of Al Shaqab Racing, and the dam, Amina de Monlau
(Monsieur Al Maury), who twice unsuccessfully graced
the racecourse. Her first offering, Leila de Monlau,
(Nizam) made her debut in a PA Group race in which
she was a close fourth. In 2020 she foaled Africa de

Manager de Yas Racing, propriétaire de Jugurtha de
Monlau, Thierry Delègue nous a dit : « C’est une belle
victoire. Il avait déjà gagné cette course l’an dernier,
avant de traverser un passage à vide ensuite. Le voir à
nouveau en belle condition et renouer avec la victoire
est une grande satisfaction. Surtout que le lot était re-
levé. C’est donc une victoire intéressante. Nous allons
voir comment le cheval rentre mais la suite logique est
d’aller vers la Kahayla Classic (Gr1). »
UNE HISTOIRE EXTRAORDINAIRE
Jean-Claude Pecout, l’entraîneur des deux premiers,
nous a confié en mars 2022 : « Le cheval avait une para-
lysie du larynx. Nous l’avons opéré trois fois. Il y a trois
mois et demi, Jugurtha de Monlau évoluait au pas et
au petit trot. Nous lui avons appris à respirer en allant
tout doucement. Aujourd’hui, on voit le fruit du travail
de l’équipe qui travaille
le matin. Il a effectué sa

rentrée en janvier 2022
sur 2.000m – et sur le
dirt – pour lui donner un
galop public. L’idée était
de voir comment il allait
réagir. Le cheval s’est
classé bon troisième.
Ensuite, il a couru H.H.
The President Cup (Gr1
PA) – sur 2.200m en ga-
zon – et il s’est classé sur
cinquième. C’était peut-
être long et la deuxième course après une longue ab-
sence n’est jamais évidente. Concernant l’Al Maktoum
Challenge Round 3 (Gr1 PA) – sur 2.000m –, je pensais
qu’il serait sur le podium. Mais je n’imaginais pas qu’il
allait gagner (…) Ce qu’il fait, c’est assez grandiose. »
UN VRAI CROISEMENT "BOURDETTE"
Jugurtha de Monlau a été élevé en France par Robert
et Marie-Ange Bourdette, tout comme son père,
Al Mamun Monlau (Munjiz), stationné au haras du
Grand Courgeon pour Al Shaqab Racing, et sa mère,
Amina de Monlau (Monsieur Al Maury), une jument
qui a couru deux fois sans succès. Son premier produit,
Leila de Monlau (Nizam), avait débuté directement au
niveau Groupe en se classant proche quatrième. En
2020, elle a eu Africa de Monlau (Af Al Buraq), une

AF ALAJAJ, LE SOMMET D’UNE GRANDE JOURNÉE POUR TADHG O’SHEA
This Thursday card at Abu Dhabi staged a total of six
races, five of which were restricted to PA thoroughbreds,
and Tadhg O’Shea cleaned up in all of them! However, his
triumph in Liwa Oasis (Gr2 PA) was the icing on the cake of
his five-timer.
The winner of the Mazrat Al Ruwayah (Gr2 PA) over a mile in
February, Af Alajaj (Af Albahar) had made a winning return
on November 11th when taking the Bani Yas (Gr2 PA)... and
this after a 230 day absence. The Khalid Khalifa Al Nabooda
homebred and representative was subsequently unsighted
in the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 1 (Gr1 PA), when he
could manage only 15th on the Meydan dirt. Reverting to
turf at Abu Dhabi turf on this Thursday card, he showed yet
again that he had the required courage when it came to
scoring a third win at PA Group level. And this despite giv-
ing 1.5 kg (3lb) all round to his rivals. After a three wide trip,
he found himself in second approaching the home straight.
In the ensuing struggle, he managed to reel-in the Omani
raider Bahar Muscat (Af Albahar), before turning back the
thrust of ex-French Bel’Izam (Nizam). A head divided the
pair at the line. Bahar Muscat was three-quarters of a length
further away in third.

Le 2 mars, l’hippodrome d’Abu Dhabi avait six courses
au programme. Dont cinq pour les pur-sang arabes, et
Tadhg O’Shea les a toutes remportées ! Mais dans ce
coup de cinq, assurément le Liwa Oasis (Gr2 PA) était la
cerise sur le gâteau.
Lauréat du Mazrat Al Ruwayah (Gr2 PA) sur le mile au mois
de février, Af Alajaj (Af Albahar) avait effectué un retour
(gagnant) à la compétition le 11 novembre, à l’occasion
du Bani Yas (Gr2 PA)... et ce après 230 jours de pause.
L’élève et représentant de Khalid Khalifa Al Nabooda a
ensuite été "transparent" dans l’Al Maktoum Challenge
Round 1 (Gr1 PA) et il n’a pu faire mieux que 15e sur le dirt
de Meydan. De retour sur le gazon d’Abu Dhabi ce jeudi
2 mars, il a encore une fois montré qu’il avait du courage
pour remporter un troisième succès au niveau Groupe. Et
ce malgré 1,5 kg de plus que ses adversaires… En troi-
sième épaisseur tout au long du parcours, il s’est retrouvé
en deuxième position pour aborder la ligne droite. À la
lutte, il est venu à bout de l’omanais Bahar Muscat (Af
Albahar) avant de résister au bon retour de l’ex-français
Bel’Izam (Nizam). Une tête sépare les deux premiers.
Bahar Muscat est troisième à trois quarts de longueur.

NEXT STOP: THE KAHAYLA CLASSIC
Ernst Oertel, the winning trainer, said: “Tadhg O’Shea
is a real class act! Af Alajaj is a very talented horse who
is being primed for the Dubai Kahayla Classic (Gr1 PA).
He was 11th in this coveted prize last year.” Tadhg
O’Shea added: “He’s one of my favourite PA horses
in the yard. He’s tough and has a turn of foot. After
coming under pressure, he found another gear. He’s a
class act…”
THE BROTHER OF JAMAAYIL
Af Alajaj is a son of Af Albahar (Amer), a stallion based
at the Haras de Thouars, and one much talked about in
the Gulf region this winter. The dam Hathrah (Makzan)
was unraced. She has produced Jamaayil (Al Jakbar),
the French Arabian Breeders Sprint (Gr2 PA) winner, and
Awzaan (Al Saoudi). The latter annexed The Royal Cavalry
of Oman Clarendon Stakes (Gr3 PA), in addition to boast-
ing a third in the H.H. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan
Cup (Gr1 PA) at Sandown. The grandam, Ester du Paon
(Chéri Bibi), won on the British circuit. She is responsible
for producing the Dubai Stakes (Gr1 PA) winning Jiyush
(Manganate), and the Sheikh Zayed Sultan Al Nahyan Cup
(Gr1 PA) third Awzaan (Al Saoudi). The great grandam is
none other than the much heralded Berthe (Irmak).

L’entraîneur du lauréat, Ernst Oertel, a déclaré : « Tadhg
O’Shea, c’est un vrai champion ! Af Alajaj est un très
bon cheval qui devrait courir la Dubai Kahayla Classic
(Gr1 PA). » L’an dernier, il s’est classé onzième de la
grande épreuve. De son côté, Tadhg O’Shea a dit :
« C’est l’un de mes pur-sang arabes préférés à l’écurie.
Il est dur et peut changer de vitesse. Quand les autres
l’ont attaqué, il est reparti. C’est un cheval de classe… »
LE FRÈRE DE JAMAAYIL
Af Alajaj est un produit d’Af Albahar (Amer), étalon sta-
tionné au haras de Thouars qui fait beaucoup parler de
lui cet hiver dans le Golfe. Sa mère, Hathrah (Makzan),
n’a pas couru. Elle a donné Jamaayil (Al Jakbar), lau-
réate du French Arabian Breeders Sprint (Gr2 PA), et
Awzaan (Al Saoudi), vainqueur de The Royal Cavalry
of Oman Clarendon Stakes (Gr3 PA) et troisième de la

JOE STAR MAKES HIS CLASS TELL

Third in the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Poulains
(Gr1  PA) in September, Joe Star (Al Mourtajez) has
yet to disappoint. The homebred and representative
of Helal Alalawi (National Stables) won a conditions
race on the Al Ain dirt, following his return effort on
January 21 . He also impressed on his first stab at PA
st
Group level in the United Arab Emirates. The Arabian
Triple Crown Round 2 (Gr3 PA) marked his first attempt
beyond 2,000m, yet he turned on the style despite
the presence of some heavyweight rivals. RB Stryngs
Attached (Majd Al Arab), coming off a 12-lengths
win, was just under three lengths away in second.
RB Kingmaker (Baseq Al Khalediah), the Arabian Triple
Crown R1 (L PA) winner, was third...
Joe Star, having been drawn on the wide outside, was
taken in hand fairly quickly after the start. The capable
Tadhg O’Shea gave him an ideal ride, having positioned
his mount in third along the rails. The combination
drew upsides the leader, RB Kingmaker, on exiting the
final bend, with the pair, in the same ownership, sub-
sequently matching strides for a while. However, when

à conditions sur le dirt d’Al Ain pour son retour à la
compétition, le 21 janvier. Et le jeudi 2 mars, pour
son premier Groupe aux Émirats, il a fait impression.
Dans l’Arabian Triple Crown Round 2 (Gr3 PA), son
premier essai au-delà de 2.000m, il s’impose avec
classe devant de très sérieux adversaires. RB Stryngs
Attached (Majd Al Arab), qui restait sur une victoire de
12 longueurs, est deuxième à près de trois longueurs.

Arabian Triple Crown R1 (L PA), termine troisième…
Joe Star, avec son numéro tout à l’extérieur, a été
repris assez rapidement après le départ. L’habile
Tadhg O’Shea lui a donné un parcours idéal en troi-
sième position, le long du rail intérieur. Il est venu à
la hauteur de l’animateur, RB Kingmaker, en sortant
du virage et les deux compagnons de casaque ont
évolué un moment au botte à botte. Mais lorsque

asked to pick up by Tadhg O’Shea, the future winner
moved through the gears, whereas his rivals remained
rooted to the spot. The jockey opined on dismounting:
“He’s a very good horse whose profile speaks to the
2024 renewal of the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan
Jewel Crown (Gr1 PA).”
THE BROTHER OF IZADI STAR
Bred by Laure Castelnerac and Thomas Fourcy, Joe Star
is a son of Al Mourtajez (Dahess): a stallion basking
in the reputation of being the Frankel (Galileo) of the
PA world. This sire has made a remarkable start to his
stallion career. Joe Star was acquired by Paul Basquin
(Saubouas Bloodstock) on behalf of Helal Alalawi.
His dam is the Qatar Coupe de France des Chevaux
Arabes (Gr1 PA) third Guest Del Falot (Djorman). Her
first foal, Ael Star (Dahess), won on his debut before
being exported to Qatar. The grandam has produced
Mister General (General) whose introductory effort
yielded a six lengths win in a maiden (1700m) (dirt) at
Doha. The mare has subsequently generated the very
smart Izadi Star (Azadi). The latter, an impressive win-
ner on the United Arab Emirates circuit, was beaten a
whisker in the Qatar PA 4-year-old Derby (Gr1 PA)...

changé de vitesse, avec classe, laissant les autres sur
place. En descendant de cheval, le jockey a eu ses
mots : « C’est un très bon cheval, avec le profil pour
la Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Jewel Crown
(Gr1 PA) l’année prochaine. »
LE FRÈRE D’IZADI STAR
Élevé par Laure Castelnerac et Thomas Fourcy, Joe Star
est un fils d’Al Mourtajez (Dahess), le Frankel (Galileo)
des pur-sang arabes. Il réalise des débuts tout à fait
remarquables au haras. Joe Star a été acheté par Paul
Basquin (Saubouas Bloodstock) pour le compte d’He-
lal Alalawi.

At the beginning of the 2023 season, we can clear-
ly ascertain how good a racehorse Hadi de Carrère
(Nieshan) is. We are still awaiting his return to competi-
tion, but meanwhile some
of his past victims continue to collect in terms of secur-
ing prestige wins. In 2020, Hadi de Carrère proved too
good for Abbes (TM Fred Texas) in the Qatar Arabian
Trophy des Poulains (Gr1 PA). Lest we forget, the latter
recently sluiced home in H.H. The Amir Sword (Gr1 PA).
In the early part of the 2022 season, Hadi de Carrère
outbattled Tilal Al Khalediah (Laith Al Khalediah) in the
Obaiya Arabian Classic. Tilal Al Khalediah has not tast-
ed defeat since, and on February 25 , the Saad Mutlaq
th
charge trotted up in the Obaiya Arabian Classic (since
upgraded to Gr1 PA status).
CLEARLY IN A VERY DIFFERENT CLASS TO HIS RIVALS
Unbeaten in two outings this season, the future winner
raced widest of all, and rider Adel Alfouraidi had no al-
ternative but to exercise caution, given that the combi-
nation were deploying an outside trajectory. Meanwhile,
Qaswarat Al Khalediah (Laith Al Khalediah) and

En ce début d’année 2023, on mesure à quel
point le français Hadi de Carrère (Nieshan) était un
sacré cheval de course. En attendant son retour à la
compétition, les chevaux qu’il a battus par le passé
collectionnent les victoires de prestige. En 2020, Hadi
de Carrère dominait Abbes (TM Fred Texas) dans le
Qatar Arabian Trophy des Poulains (Gr1 PA). Et Abbes
s’est récemment envolé dans H.H. The Amir Sword
(Gr1 PA). Début 2022, il battait à la lutte Tilal Al
Khalediah (Laith Al Khalediah) dans l’Obaiya Arabian
Classic. Tilal Al Khalediah n’a pas été défait depuis,
et le 25 février, ce pensionnaire de Saad Mutlaq s’est
envolé dans l’Obaiya Arabian Classic (désormais labé-
lisée Gr1 PA).
TRÈS AU-DESSUS DU LOT
Invaincu en deux sorties cette saison, le futur lauréat
s’est élancé tout à l’extérieur et Adel Alfouraidi n’a pas
eu d’autre choix que de s’élancer prudemment pour
le faire évoluer en épaisseur. Devant, Qaswarat Al
Khalediah (Laith Al Khalediah) et RB Rich Like Me (Majd
Al Arab) ont fait le train, alors que Tilal Al Khalediah est

RB Rich Like Me (Majd Al Arab) set the tempo, as Tilal
Al Khalediah gradually drew upsides that pair. In the
straight, the outcome was never in doubt, as the lat-
ter waved goodbye to his rivals. RB Rich Like Me, the
2022 third, was six and a half lengths adrift in second.

THE EASE OF THE WIN TAKES SOME BY SURPRISE
The PA horses trained in Saudi Arabia have proved
to be untouchable in the Saudi Cup events this year.
Alkhalediah Stables, having been very well represent-
ed in this race, were the big winners of this meeting
in that respect. Furthermore, one can’t help thinking
who will dare to lay down the gauntlet to them on the
domestic scene next year? On dismounting, jockey
Adel Alfouraidi found it hard to come to terms with the
ease of the win. He said: “I’m delighted with the per-
formance. I knew he stayed well but it was a challenge
from an outside gate. I wanted to hold on to the horse
for as long as possible, but he was going so well that I
had to let him go. I can’t explain what happened. The
horse is such a good horse. His stablemate was in front
of me and I followed him until the 600m pole, and we
progressed slowly until the 400m pole, and then he
just went…”
THE NEPHEW OF JALAB AL KHALIDIAH
As his name suggests, Tilal Al Khalediah was bred by
Al Khalediah Stables. He’s a son of Laith Al Khalediah
(Tiwaiq) and is in-bred (2 x 3) to Tiwaiq (Hamdani),
which is relatively rare in the Stud Book. The grandam,
Édèle de Carrère (Djourman), has produced Jalab Al
Khalidiah (Amer). The latter won the Prix Manganate
(Gr1 PA) and was third in the Qatar Arabian World Cup
(Gr1 PA). Édèle de Carrère has also yielded Newmoon
(Newday), the Abu Dhabi International Championship
(Gr1 PA) third, at Newmarket. The great grandam
foaled the stallion Royal de Carrère (Mad Oua). This
is the close family of Arc de Ciel (Djendel), the Qatari
Horse of the Year in the 2000-2001 season, and sub-
sequent dam of the outstanding Gazwan (Amer). This
lineage is also closely related to Asraa Min Albarq
(Amer): the winner of the Dubai International Stakes
(Gr1 PA); and Areej (Amer): the Qatar Arabian World
Cup (Gr1 PA) winning mare in 2011... a list that is far
from exhaustive list. This is one of the strands of the
Nevada II (Djanor) line.

GAGNER AVEC AUTANT DE MARGE, UNE SURPRISE
Cette année, les pur-sang arabes entraînés en Arabie
Saoudite se sont montrés intouchables dans les
épreuves de la Saudi Cup. Alkhalediah Stables, qui avait
beaucoup de chevaux au départ, est le grand gagnant
de ce meeting de ce point de vue. On se demande
presque qui osera venir les affronter l’année prochaine
à domicile. En descendant du gagnant, le jockey Adel
Alfouraidi semblait avoir du mal à réaliser qu’il avait
gagné aussi facilement : « Je suis ravi de sa prestation.
Je savais qu’il était bien. Mais c’était un défi en partant
depuis une stalle extérieure. Je voulais attendre le plus
longtemps possible, mais il allait tellement bien que j’ai
dû le laisser partir. Je ne suis pas capable d’expliquer
ce qui s’est passé ensuite… Il est tellement bon. Son
compagnon d’écurie était devant moi et je l’ai suivi
jusqu’à 600m du but. Puis j’ai progressé lentement
jusqu’à la barre des 400m, et il est parti… »
LE NEVEU DE JALAB AL KHALIDIAH
Comme son nom l’indique, Tilal Al Khalediah a été éle-
vé par Al Khalediah Stables. C’est un fils de Laith Al
Khalediah (Tiwaiq) et il est inbred (en 2 × 3) sur Tiwaiq
(Hamdani), ce qui reste relativement rare dans le stud-
book. La deuxième mère, Édèle de Carrère (Djourman),
a produit Jalab Al Khalidiah (Amer), lauréat du Prix
Manganate et troisième de la Qatar Arabian World Cup
(Grs1 PA). Édèle de Carrère a aussi donné Newmoon
(Newday), troisième de l’Abu Dhabi International
Championship (Gr1 PA) à Newmarket. La troisième
mère a produit l’étalon Royal de Carrère (Mad Oua).
C’est la proche famille d’Arc de Ciel (Djendel), che-

ASFAN AL KHALEDIAH RESTE INVAINCU
The Saudi Arabian PA horses are hard to beat and, on
February 24th, Asfan Al Khalediah (Laith Al Khalediah)
proved the veracity of that by hacking up in the Al
Mneefah Cup (Gr2 PA). Soon racing in the slipstream of
Sultana (Af Al Buraq), who travelled well within herself,
Asfan Al Khalediah was pulled out for his challenge ex-
iting the final bend... and, from then on, it was a case
of catch me if you can. Consequently, the grey’s snappy
turn of foot carried him six and a half lengths clear of Bint
Ghaliat Al Khalediah (Hatim Al Khalediah). Sultana, the
Élisabeth Bernard mare, kept on courageously to the bit-
ter end, and this enabled her to hold third, two lengths
further back, after repelling the thrust of Salwa (Kalino)
by a head. The latter, trained by Alban de Mieulle, was
ridden by Ronan Thomas. Djafar (Dahess) and Teema
(Bibi de Carrère) were eighth and tenth respectively.
Asfan Al Khalediah, the H.R.H. Prince Khalid bin Sultan
Sons representative, is trained by Saad Mutlaq. He re-
mains unbeaten in five outings, having recently become
acquainted with the Riyadh turf course after contesting
the Al Mneefah Qualifier over 1,600m. The step-up to
2,100m presented no problems for him.

et, le 24 février, Asfan Al Khalediah (Laith Al Khalediah)
l’a encore démontré en survolant l’Al Mneefah Cup
(Gr2 PA). Vite bien placé dans le sillage de Sultana (Af
Al Buraq), qui a mené, bien dans son action, Asfan Al
Khalediah a été décalé à la sortie du tournant final… et
qui m’aime me suive ! Le gris a placé une nette accé-
lération pour s’imposer de six longueurs et demie de-
vant Bint Ghaliat Al Khalediah (Hatim Al Khalediah).
Sultana, la pensionnaire d’Élisabeth Bernard, s’est
montrée courageuse jusqu’au bout pour conserver la
troisième place à deux longueurs, résistant d’une tête
au retour de Salwa (Kalino), pensionnaire d’Alban de
Mieulle montée par Ronan Thomas. Djafar (Dahess) est
huitième et Teema (Bibi de Carrère) dixième.

Keheilan (Kesberoy) (bred by Martial Boisseuil) raced
in Qatar following her French introduction. She has
produced Baseq Al Khalediah (Tiwaiq) the winner of
the Qatar Total French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge
(Gr1 PA) on his second career outing; plus Ghadanfar
Al Khalediah (Jalood Al Khalediah), a dual Gr3 PA win-
ner, in addition to finishing second in The President of
UAE Cup - Coupe d’Europe (Gr1 PA), and third in the
AFAC - Coupe d’Europe des Chevaux Arabes (Gr1 PA);
and Aghareed Al Khalediah (Jalood Al Khalediah): the
Qatar Prix de l’Élevage (Gr3 PA) third.

ABBES SHINES IN AN EQUIVALENT OF THE PA ARC
ABBES A GAGNÉ SON ARC
Second last year in this much coveted prize, Abbes
(TM Fred Texas) has been going great guns, following
an unbeaten run, in Doha this winter. He impressed
in the H.E. Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani Trophy
(Gr3  PA), a local prep race, on January 21 . Fast for-
st
warding to February 18th at Doha, he again turned on
the style under Mickaël Barzalona, having experienced
victory, for the very first time, in one of the major events
of the international PA calendar.
Maruf (Tabarak), deployed in the role of ‘rabbit’, set the
pace, whereas Abbes sat in sixth place. At the begin-
ning of the straight, both Moshrif (Dahess) and Abbes
capitalised on their prominent positions by thrusting
themselves in the thick of the action. For 100m, we
were left in suspense as to which of the pair was about
to get on top. However, Abbes was to prove in a dif-
ferent league. As halfway up the straight, he exuded
class after asserting by two and a half lengths. On his
first test against older horses, Moshrif was a creditable
second. A dual PA Gr1 winner in France, Hoggar de
l’Ardus (Mister Ginoux) was two lengths further away
in third. A triple Gr1 PA winner on the Gulf circuit,
First Classs (Dahess) continues to be very effective
on a sound surface. He secured fourth. Lady Princess

Deuxième l’année dernière de cette grande course,
Abbes (TM Fred Texas) est resté invaincu cet hiver à
Doha. Il a notamment survolé le H.E. Sheikh Joaan Bin
Hamad Al Thani Trophy (Gr3 PA), la préparatoire, qui
se disputait le 21 janvier dernier. Le 18 février à Doha,
il a réalisé une démonstration sous la selle de Mickaël
Barzalona, remportant pour la première fois une des
épreuves majeures du circuit international.
Le lièvre Maruf (Tabarak) a fait le train, alors qu’Abbes
évoluait en sixième position. À l’entrée de la ligne
droite, Moshrif (Dahess) et Abbes ont profité du fait
d’être proches des animateurs pour venir à la pointe
du combat. Pendant 100m, on s’est demandé lequel
des deux allait prendre l’ascendant. Mais Abbes était
au-dessus du lot. Et à mi-ligne droite, il a signé un
éclair de classe pour finalement s’imposer de deux lon-
gueurs et demie. Pour son premier test face aux che-
vaux d’âge, Moshrif est bon deuxième. Double lauréat
de Gr1 en France, Hoggar de l’Ardus (Mister Ginoux)
est troisième à deux longueurs. Triple lauréat de Gr1
dans le Golfe, First Classs (Dahess) est toujours très
percutant en bon terrain. Il termine quatrième. Lady
Princess (General) n’a pas livré une performance à
la hauteur de sa valeur. Tendue avant la course, elle

(General) didn’t run up to her best form. On her toes
before the race, she wasn’t striding out with her cus-
tomary fluency. So this high class act had to settle
for fifth.
A HIGH CLASS RENEWAL
After the race, and for almost an hour, a sizeable quan-
tity of well-wishers took it upon themselves to congrat-
ulate Alban de Mieulle, and have their photos taken
alongside him. In the melee of handshakes, the trainer
told us: “It’s very hard to win such races.” The trainer
boasts a number of previous wins in the Amir Sword,
and yet this 2023 edition will linger long in the annals
[of the history of the race] according to him: “It’s not be-
cause we won it, but I think that it is one of the best PA
races that has ever been staged on account of the sheer
depth of the race in terms of quality. The quality of the
horses on display was extraordinary. Had Moshrif, the
second, had been re-routed to Saudi Arabia next week
[Feb 25th], I think that he would go on to win his partic-
ular assignment. That’s how good the race was today.
The likes of Ebraz (Amer), Tayf (Amer) and Gazwan
(Amer) previously graced the stage, but here we had
a lot of young PA horses, and ones endowed with con-
siderable talent, on view. First Classs (Dahess), Lady
Princess (General), Hoggar de l’Ardus (Mister Ginoux)
and Moshrif... they are all very smart customers.”
A BIG WIN FOR WATHNAN RACING
Alban de Mieulle will again go on to top the trainers’
list. He added: “It’s a pleasure, of course. However, the
most important thing is to win the Amir Sword again
as it’s a coveted prize which I hadn’t won for a while.
It’s a quantum leap forward for Wathnan Racing, the
new racing concern, whose horses I train. I had already
trained the dam of the winner for Sheikh Abdullah, and
am delighted that this stud continues to shine at a high
level. Abbes was a very smart PA 3-year-old when previ-
ously trained in France by Thomas Fourcy.” After land-
ing the Qatar Coupe de France des Chevaux Arabes
(since upgraded to Gr1 PA status), he was only beaten
a whisker by the excellent Hadi de Carrère (Nieshan) in
the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Poulains (Gr1 PA).
A SON OF THE HIGH CLASS RAQIYAH
Bred (in the purple) at the Haras du Grand Courgeon
on behalf of His Highness Sheikh Abdullah Bin Khalifa
Al Thani, Abbes spent his pre-training period with Éric
Ventrou. He’s a son of TM Fred Texas (Burning Sand),
although the very successful Al Shaqab Racing sire
was plagued by fertility problems prior to his export
to Qatar.

UNE GRANDE ÉDITION
Après la course, pendant près d’une heure, des di-
zaines de personnes sont venues féliciter Alban de
Mieulle et se prendre en photo avec lui. Entre deux poi-
gnées de main, l’entraîneur nous a confié : « C’est très
dur gagner de telles courses. » L’entraîneur a remporté
l’Amir Sword à de nombreuses reprises, et pourtant,
cette édition 2023 restera dans les annales selon lui :
« Ce n’est pas parce que nous l’avons gagnée, mais je
pense que c’est l’une des meilleures courses de pur-
sang arabes qui ait été courue, de par l’homogénéité
dans l’excellence des concurrents. La qualité des che-
vaux était extraordinaire. Si Moshrif, le deuxième, était
allé en Arabie Saoudite la semaine prochaine, je pense
qu’il aurait gagné. C’est vous dire le niveau de la course
du jour. Précédemment, il y a eu Ebraz (Amer), Tayf
(Amer), Gazwan (Amer)… mais là nous avions un lot
de jeunes pur-sang arabes avec de très grandes qua-
lités. First Classs (Dahess), Lady Princess (General),
Hoggar de l’Ardus (Mister Ginoux), Moshrif… Ce sont
tous de très bons chevaux. »
UNE VICTOIRE IMPORTANTE WATHNAN RACING
Alban de Mieulle va donc encore une fois terminer en
tête de liste des entraîneurs : « Cela fait plaisir, bien sûr.
Mais le plus important est de gagner à nouveau l’Amir
Sword, une grande épreuve que je n’avais pas rempor-
tée depuis un moment. C’est un grand bond en avant
pour Wathnan Racing, la nouvelle entité pour laquelle
j’entraîne. J’avais déjà la mère pour le cheikh Abdullah
et je suis ravi de voir cet élevage continuer à briller
à haut niveau. En France, lorsqu’il était entraîné par
Thomas Fourcy, Abbes était un très bon 3ans. » Après
avoir remporté la Qatar Coupe de France des Chevaux
Arabes (aujourd’hui Gr1 PA), il avait en effet été dominé
du minimum dans le Qatar Arabian Trophy des Poulains
(Gr1 PA) de l’excellent Hadi de Carrère (Nieshan).
UN FILS DE LA CHAMPIONNE RAQIYAH

Gr1 PA in France (including two editions of Coupe d’Eu-
rope), Qatar and Britain, where she provided Olivier
Peslier with a Gr1 PA victory on the prestigious King
George card. Her first foal, the filly Badda (Séraphin du
Paon), won in Qatar. Her son Salwa (Kalino) was third in
the Prix Tidjani (Gr3 PA) on his racecourse debut. She
gave birth to a foal by Baseq Al Khalediah (Tiwaiq) in
2022, having previously foaled to Al Mamun Monlau

However, racing courses through his blood. He may, too,
be a (new) Jim Bolger in the making… a Qatari version that
is. Insha’Allah as we say in Doha! The Qatari professional
is well acquainted with the Irish maestro, having acquired
the stallion Hall of Fame (Teofilo) from him. All things
told, AJS Saaeq (Af Albahar) provided him with his first
Gr1 PA winner as a trainer, owner and breeder rolled into
one, on this Saturday card! Mohammed Hamad Khalifa
Al Attiyah trains at the family stud, Al Jeryan Stud, which
is 30 kilometers north of Doha. The icing on the cake
lies in the fact that AJS Saaeq is a son of the family stal-
lion, Af Albahar (Amer)... In the aftermath, an emotional
Mohammed Hamad Khalifa Al Attiyah said: “Winning a
Gr1 PA race with a locally-bred horse is truly a landmark
achievement. Indeed, it’s invariably difficult to beat the
imported horses. The victory of AJS Saaeq fills us with joy.
I had confidence in my horse, and he has rewarded us via
this magnificent success. This opens the door to other big
mile races on the calendar... However, for the time being,
we will enjoy the moment! One thing is certain: the best
horse won the race.” After a formative process in which

Inch’allah comme on dit à Doha ! D’ailleurs, le Qatari
connaît bien le maître irlandais à qui il a acheté l’éta-
lon Hall of Fame (Teofilo). Cela étant dit, AJS Saaeq
(Af Albahar) lui offre un premier Gr1 PA en tant qu’en-
traîneur. Mais aussi en tant que propriétaire et en tant

with PA imports from France. Proven over sprint trips, in
common with many of his sire’s progeny, he proved, too,
that 1,600m is well within his compass.
DIFFERENT CLASS TO HIS RIVALS
The Szczepan Mazur-ridden AJS Saaeq initially raced in
mid-division as Hargan (Al Mamun Monlau), a familiar
name in France at Gr1 PA level, set the tempo. The rest,
as they say is history. For proved easy pickings as AJS
Saaeq quickened clear into an unassailable lead at the
beginning of the straight. Jabalah (Al Mamun Monlau)
ran on to snatch second. He was coming off a PA Group
win at this very course. Amyr du Soleil (Amer) collected
third with Sahab (Af Albahar) close up in fourth.
THE GRANDAM IS A FULL SISTER TO NO RISK
AL MAURY
Bred by Al Jeryan Stud, AJS Saaeq is a son of Af Albahar,
an unraced stallion based at the French stud, the Haras
de Thouars. The dam, Sahab Al Zaeem (Djendel), has
a purely French pedigree. She has also foaled AJS
Sabeeha (Af Albahar). The latter won a maiden over
a mile at Doha. The grandam, Noisette Al Maury
(Kesberoy), has produced the Qatari septuple winning
sire Al Noor (Akbar). The great grandam, Nectarine Al
Maury (Baroud III), is the dam of the multiple Gr1 PA
winning and leading sire No Risk Al Maury (Kesberoy).
This is one of the most coveted strands of the much
heralded French line of Nevada II (Djanor).

connu en France au niveau Gr1 PA. Et le reste n’a été
qu’une formalité. Il a creusé l’écart en début de ligne
droite et personne n’a été capable de le rattraper. Jabalah
(Al Mamun Monlau) finit bien pour prendre la deuxième
place, sans parvenir à inquiéter le gagnant. Il restait sur un
succès dans un Groupe sur ce parcours. Amyr du Soleil
(Amer) est troisième, juste devant Sahab (Af Albahar).

Élevé par Al Jeryan Stud, AJS Saaeq est un fils d’Af

AF ALMOMAYAZ CONTINUES ON THE UPGRADE
LES PROGRÈS D’AF ALMOMAYAZ
A late developer and the winner of his maiden on
the Al Ain dirt three years ago, Af Almomayaz (Victor
Adam) is now an 8-year-old. He has progressively been
battled-hardened after contesting handicaps. The win-
ner by a head at the backend of January in a sprint
when apprentice-ridden, Almomayaz was also a cred-
itable fifth, following a blanket finish, in the Al Ruwais
(Gr3 PA) on the Abu Dhabi turf course. Given a peach
of a ride by Adrie de Vries, the combination enjoyed
a dream run along the rails in the Mazrat Al Ruwayah
(Gr2  PA), which underpinned their February 17th win.
The winner races in the colours of Mohamed Mosabbah
Mohammed Al Mazrouei. This marked the owner’s first
PA Group win. The successful trainer Qaiss Aboud was
similarly savouring his first black type victory.
Very fast away from the gates and capitalising on a
good draw, Af Almomayaz was the quickest into his
stride. Although he relinquished the lead to Asif (Dhiaa
Al Reef). The latter was still at the head of affairs with
300m to go, before notably coming under pressure
from Af Almomayaz, who threaded his way along the

Cheval tardif, lauréat de son maiden sur le dirt
d’Al Ain il y a trois ans, Af Almomayaz (Victor Adam)
est désormais âgé de 8ans. Il s’est endurci progressi-
vement dans les handicaps. Vainqueur d’une tête fin
janvier, sur le sprint, sous la selle d’un apprenti, il s’est
classé bon cinquième dans une arrivée serrée de l’Al
Ruwais (Gr3 PA) sur le gazon d’Abu Dhabi. Le 17 février,
Adrie de Vries lui a donné un parcours en or à la corde
et il a remporté le Mazrat Al Ruwayah (Gr2 PA) sous
les couleurs de Mohamed Mosabbah Mohammed Al
Mazrouei. Cette victoire lui permet de décrocher son
premier Groupe. Tout comme son entraîneur, Qaiss
Aboud, dont c’est aussi la toute première victoire
black type.
Très véloce et bien placé dans les stalles de départ,
Af Almomayaz s’est élancé le plus vite. Et il a pris la
tête, avant d’être relayé par Asif (Dhiaa Al Reef). Ce
dernier avait encore l’avantage à 300m du but avant
de subir les attaques, notamment d’Af Almomayaz,
qui s’est infiltré à la corde pour prendre le meilleur.

rails. Meanwhile, Héros de Lagarde (Af Albahar), hav-
ing waited at the rear of the field, made a forward move
on the outside. This was the prelude to him ‘hunting’
down the winner after thrusting himself in the thick of
the action.
However Af Almomayaz, having harnessed his energies
following a rail-hugging trip, still had something up his
sleeve, and he held on by a neck! Courageous to the
end, Asif managed to hold third by a neck!

A FIRST GROUP WINNER FOR VICTOR ADAM
Af Almomyaz is a product of renowned Khalid Khalifa
Al Nabooda breeding academy, and this applies equal-
ly to the paternal and maternal sides of the pedigree.
He’s currently the best offering of his dam, Af Kalrajm
(Amer). She failed to make the winner’s circle on the
racecourse, but is a half-sister to Kahzo (Dormane): the
latter, bred by the Haras du Bosquet, won the 2001 edi-
tion of the Prix du Président des Emirats Unis (Gr1 PA)
at Deauville, and this at the main expense of the smart
Saklawi Jardane (Kesberoy), before being exported to
the United Arab Emirates. The sire, Victor Adam (Nez
d’Or), born in 2005 and a Khalid Al Nabooda sire, has
covered relatively few mares. Af Almomayaz is his first
real performer of note, and his first PA Group winner.
Bred by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum,
Victor Adam didn’t enjoy the greatest of racing ca-
reers, but his pedigree certainly stands out, as his dam,
Victorias Secrett (ZT Ali Baba), is a full sister to the
outstanding Unchainedd Melody (37 wins in a 38 race
career!). Bred by Bill and Dianne Waldron, Victorias
Secrett had an unblemished career in the US after
winning all her 14 career starts, including two Gr1 PA
prizes. She was also the recipient of the Darley Award
for the PA Horse of the Year in 1992 (a year before her
sister). Subsequently exported, she has alas produced
very little.

Président des Émirats Arabes Unis (Gr1 PA) à Deauville
en 2001, devant le bon Saklawi Jardane (Kesberoy)
avant d’être exportée aux Émirats. Le père, Victor

Nabooda et a peu sailli. Af Almomayaz est son premier
vrai bon cheval et son premier gagnant de Groupe.

MUJEEB HAS HIS DAY IN THE SUN
LE GRAND JOUR DE MUJEEB
A winner at Listed level, Mujeeb (Dahess) had previous-
ly been pitched in PA Group company four times prior to
breaking the ice in the H.H. The President Cup (Gr1 PA) on
February 17th. The Al Asayl Racing homebred had to over-
come a wide draw (12 of 14), so Richard Mullen decided
to let rivals stride on in order to mitigate this. So the future
winner was initially among the tail-enders and, on hitting the
bend, the jockey realised that his mount was likely to get
trapped should the combination opt to challenge along the
inside. After the jockey elected to challenge five wide on his
mount, Mujeeb subsequently found himself part of a group
of a seven which was battling on the same line, and this be-
fore the field hit the straight. After showing commendable
gameness, the Salem Al Ketbi charge fought his way into
the lead. Mujeeb subsequently settled the issue after put-
ting daylight between himself and his rivals in mid-stretch.
He won by over a length. Somoud (Munjiz) didn’t get the
smoothest of passages at the business end, but he did
enough to get within a length and a half of the winner in sec-
ond. Hameem (Valiant Boy) was a close third. The very un-
lucky Izadi Star (Azadi) was fourth. On dismounting, Richard
Mullen said: “He’s a very good natured horse, He’s often run
well without winning. Today, as luck would have it, all the
stars aligned for him. It’s a great result for the whole team.”

Lauréat de Listed, Mujeeb (Dahess) a couru quatre
fois au niveau Groupe avant de trouver son jour, le 17
février, dans H.H. The President Cup (Gr1 PA). L’élève et
représentant d’Al Asayl Racing s’est élancé à l’extérieur
(le 12 sur 14) et Richard Mullen a laissé les autres avan-
cer pour effacer son numéro à la corde. Le futur lauréat
a galopé parmi les derniers et en arrivant dans le tour-
nant, le pilote a compris qu’il allait se retrouver piégé
le long du rail intérieur. Il a alors fait évoluer Mujeeb en
cinquième épaisseur, et sept chevaux se sont ainsi re-
trouvés de front avant même d’aborder la ligne droite.
Le pensionnaire de Salem Al Ketbi a alors vraiment
mis son cœur sur la piste pour prendre l’avantage. Il
a creusé l’écart et, à mi-ligne droite, il comptait déjà
une bonne longueur d’avance sur le peloton. Somoud
(Munjiz) n’a pas eu ses aises dans la phase finale et dé-
croche finalement la deuxième place à une longueur
et demie. Hameem (Valiant Boy) est proche troisième.
Très malheureux, Izadi Star (Azadi) est quatrième. En
descendant de cheval, Richard Mullen a dit : « C’est
un cheval sympathique. Il a souvent bien couru sans
avoir trop de chance. Par bonheur, aujourd’hui toutes
les planètes se sont alignées. C’est un super résultat
pour toute l’équipe. »

A SON OF THE CLASSY NYMPHÉA DU PAON
Mujeeb was bred in France at the Haras de Thouars on
behalf of Al Asayl Racing. He’s a son of one of the sires
in residence there, Dahess (Amer), who stands on be-
half of Al Shaqab Racing. The dam Nymphéa du Paon
(Mahabb) annexed the Prix Nevada II (Gr2 PA), and
was also a dual PA Group winner in the United Arab
Emirates. At stud, she has generated Basmah (Bibi de
Carrère), who proved successful in the Arabian Triple
Crown Round 2 (Gr3 PA) and the Arabian Triple Crown
Round 3 (Gr3 PA). Nymphéa du Paon died in 2020.
The grandam, Safira du Paon (Akbar) yielded three
black type performers: Nymphéa du Paon, Newboy
du Paon (Njewman), the Arabian Triple Crown Round
3 (Gr3 PA) second, and Darius du Paon (No Risk Al
Maury). The latter covered himself in glory in the Sheikh
Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup (Gr3 PA).
Giulia du Paon (Veinard Al Maury), the great grandam,
also produced three black type class PA horses, in the
image of Nemrod du Paon (Tidjani), with the latter en-
joying some success as a stallion in Tunisia.

HAYYAN SE RETROUVE
After being sidelined for a lengthy period follow-
ing his third in the 2021 edition of the Jewel Crown
(Gr1 PA), Hayyan (Munjiz) is in the process of rediscov-
ering the full extent of his talent. The Yas Horse Racing
representative had two prep races under his belt prior
to the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2 (Gr1 PA), which
included an ambitious return – after a year’s absence –
in the 2022 renewal of the Jewel Crown. On this partic-
ular Meydan card (February 3 ), he not only returned to

the winner’s circle, but also advanced his Dubai Kahayla
Classic (Gr1 PA) claims on March 25 , in one fell swoop.

Energetically ridden from the get-go by jockey Oscar
Chavez, Hayyan first found himself in the slipstream
of the leaders, but his jockey gradually extricated his
mount away from the heels of the leaders, after nego-
tiating the first bend, in order to purse a wider course.
Down the backstretch, Hayyan saw plenty of daylight,
while at the same time making a beeline for the lead
going to the final bend. Upping the pace continually on
the turn, Hayyan was pursued by Hiab Al Zaman (Hilal
Al Zaman). The pair subsequently drew clear of the rest
of the field but, unlike his rival, Hayyan was able to

Longuement sur la touche après sa troisième place
dans la Jewel Crown 2021 (Gr1 PA), Hayyan (Munjiz) est
en passe de se retrouver pleinement. Le représentant
de Yas Horse Racing avait deux courses dans les jambes
avant l’Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2 (Gr1 PA), dont
une rentrée ambitieuse – après un an d’absence – dans
la Jewel Crown 2022. Le 3 février, il a renoué avec le suc-
cès, à Meydan, marquant des points en vue de la Dubai
Kahayla Classic (Gr1 PA) du 25 mars prochain.
Sollicité au départ par son jockey, Oscar Chavez, Hayyan
s’est d’abord retrouvé dans le sillage des leaders, mais
dans le premier tournant, son pilote l’a progressivement
décalé pour le sortir de cette position. En face, Hayyan a
évolué le nez au vent, tout en faisant un effort pour venir
prendre la tête à l’entrée du dernier tournant. Il a accélé-
ré tout le long de celui-ci, suivi par Hiab Al Zaman (Hilal
Al Zaman). Les deux rivaux se sont alors détachés mais,
contrairement à son adversaire, Hayyan a su bien pour-
suivre son effort jusqu’au bout, n’étant pas inquiété par
ses poursuivants. Il s’impose de trois longueurs et demie
devant Rajeh (Jaafer), Barakka (Af Al Buraq) pointant à
la troisième place, à une longueur.

sustain his effort until the wire, and he was never to be
threatened by his rivals. He asserted by three and a half
lengths at the main expense of Rajeh (Jaafer). Barakka
(Af Al Buraq) was a length further away in third.
A FIRST SUCCESS ON DIRT
Now trained by Majed Al Jahoori, Hayyan was racing
on dirt for the first time in the Al Maktoum Challenge
Round 2, which may have prompted his jockey to swing
around his rivals in order to minimize the kickback effect.
Of Panamanian extraction, Oscar Chavez, 43, currently
plies his trade in Singapore and Macau. Hayyan was
recording his fifth Gr1 PA won on this Friday card (after
three prior French and one British wins at this level).
A SON OF THE EXCEPTIONAL DAHWA
Hayyan hails from one of the most successful blood-
lines associated with His Highness Sheikh Mansoor Bin
Zayed Al Nahyan. The dam Dahwa (Tidjani) won the
Prix de l’Élevage (Gr2 PA). Her first foal, Thabit (Munjiz),
won the Coupe du Sud-Ouest; whereas her second
offering, Bandar (Munjiz), landed the Al Maktoum
Challenge Round 3 (Gr1 PA); Najah (Munjiz) her third
product, proved victorious in the Prix Nefta (Gr2 PA)
and the French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge - Pouliches
(Gr2 PA). She also boasts a third in the Qatar Arabian
Trophy des Pouliches, (Gr1 PA). Hayyan is the mare’s
fourth foal; Teema (Bibi de Carrère), her fifth offering,
won both the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Juments and
the Qatar Cup - Prix Dragon (Grs1 PA).
The grandam, Amidou Douzaia (Chéri Bibi), is nota-
ble for the fact that in excess of 15 black performers,
in either the first or second removes of their pedigree
page, descend from her lineage. Notable examples
include Abhaar (Al Nasr): the winner of the Emirates
Championship (Gr1 PA); Naseem (Mahabb): successful
in the Al Maktoum Challenge R1 and the President Cup
(Grs1 PA); Shahm (Mahabb): The President of the UAE
Cup - Coupe d’Europe des Chevaux Arabes (Gr1 PA) vic-
tor: plus the outstanding performer Deryan (Mahabb):
the author of the Coupe d’Europe des Chevaux Arabes
and the Dubai Kahayla Classic (Grs1 PA) double… a list

UNLEASHING A NEAT TURN OF FOOT
L’ACCÉLÉRATION DE L’EX-FRANÇAIS NAMROOD FAIT LA DIFFÉRENCE
The former Shadwell charge Namrood (General) was
previously trained by Damien de Watrigant. In France,
where the competition is particularly tough, his limitations
had been exposed at PA Group level. Now racing in the col-
ours of Ahmad Bintooq Al Marri, he made his United Arab
Emirates debut in January 2022. The Musabbeh Al Mheiri
trainee won over 1,600m (dirt) at Meydan on that occasion.
However, when it came to black type races over longer trips,
he had drawn a blank. Fast forwarding to 2nd of February
2023 when reverting to 1,200m, he sluiced home in the Al
Ruwais (Gr3 PA). As always in Abu Dhabi, the pace was a
hot one. The canny Antonio Fresu deftly had his mount rac-
ing among the backmarkers, as Maahir (Mahabb) dictated
terms. Meanwhile, the future winner, equipped with a hood,
bided his time on the rails. In the straight, he had to me-
ander somewhat between the horses in order to get a run.
However, once he saw daylight, and under the energetic
promptings of Antonio Fresu, Namrood showed a snappy
turn of foot which enabled him to reel in Maahir in the final
yards. The pair were separated by half a length. Af Majalis
(Af Albahar) was a similar distance away third. None of the
first three finishers had gained black type until now.
On dismounting, Antonio Fresu said: “He had previously
shown a certain quality. Although, on his last race, he didn’t
really act on the dirt, as the pace is faster over such surfaces,
and the horse was also racing left-handed. Reverting to turf,
a surface over which he had run well a month ago, the horse

Namrood (General) a débuté sa carrière sous les
couleurs de Shadwell et l’entraînement de Damien de

ment relevée, il avait montré ses limites au niveau Groupe.

découvert les Émirats arabes unis en janvier 2022. Le pen-

Le 2 février, raccourci sur 1.200m, il a survolé l’Al Ruwais
(Gr3 PA). Comme toujours à Abu Dhabi, les concurrents se
sont élancés à un train sélectif. L’habile Antonio Fresu l’a
maintenu parmi les derniers, alors que Maahir (Mahabb)
animait les débats. Le futur lauréat, muni d’un bonnet,
a attendu son heure à la corde. Et dans la ligne droite,
il a dû un peu slalomer entre les chevaux pour trouver
le passage. Mais une fois la voie libre, bien soutenu par
Antonio Fresu, Namrood a bien accéléré pour venir cher-
cher Maahir dans les derniers mètres. Une demi-longueur
les sépare. Af Majalis (Af Albahar) est troisième à une
demi-longueur. Aucun des trois premiers de cette course
n’avait jusqu’alors décroché du caractère gras.
En descendant de cheval, Antonio Fresu a déclaré : « Il
avait déjà montré une certaine qualité. Mais en dernier
lieu, il n’avait pas forcément été à son aise sur le dirt
car cela va encore plus vite et le parcours était corde à
gauche. De retour sur le gazon, où il avait bien fait il y a

RB KINGMAKER MAKES A BIG SPLASH ON HIS TURF DEBUT
RB KINGMAKER S’ENVOLE POUR SA DÉCOUVERTE DU GAZON
The US-bred RB Kingmaker (Baseq Al Khalediah)
had never raced in his country of birth. After contesting
two maidens over a mile (on dirt) at Al Ain, he switched
to turf for the Arabian Triple Crown (L PA). The very
least we can say is that Helal Alalawi runner, racing in
the colours of National Stables, put on a show. As, for
the whole race, he travelled with a double handful, with
Antonio Fresu keeping his mount in the slipstream of
Nadia du Loup (Af Albahar). The Sardinian was left with
little alternative but to let his mount stride on in the fi-
nal bend, with the combination pursuing a wide course.
However, RB Kingmaker was subsequently to leave his
rivals rooted to the spot. A little surprised to find him-
self alone in front, the winner started to ease up, and
Antonio Fresu had to keep his mount up to his work.
Sincerely (Mahabb), the winner of a conditions’ race in
France, was seven lengths adrift in second. Incidentally,
horses trained by Helal Alalawi filled the first two plac-
es in this Listed race. Nadia du Loup (Af Albahar), a
Gr3 PA winner at Toulouse, was third.
After the presentation ceremony, Antonio Fresu said:
“This was his first race on grass so this win is a bit of a
surprise from that point of view. The change of surface
helped him a lot. Although the hot favourite didn’t run
up to his previous form. When I called upon him for his

Crown (L PA). Et le moins que l’on puisse dire, c’est que
le pensionnaire d’Helal Alalawi, qui porte les couleurs
de National Stables, a fait le spectacle. Durant tout
le parcours, il a évolué avec d’évidentes ressources,
Antonio Fresu faisant en sorte de le garder dans le
sillage de Nadia du Loup (Af Albahar). Le Sarde n’a
eu d’autre choix que de laisser avancer son cheval à
l’extérieur dès le tournant. Et RB Kingmaker a laissé les
autres sur place. Un peu surpris une fois seul devant, il
s’est repris et Antonio Fresu a dû le rappeler à l’ordre.
Sincerely (Mahabb), gagnant de course à conditions en
France, est deuxième à sept longueurs. Helal Alalawi
place donc ses protégés aux premières places de cette
Listed. Nadia du Loup (Af Albahar), lauréate de Gr3 PA
à Toulouse, termine troisième.

« C’est sa première course sur le gazon et cette victoire
est donc un peu une surprise de ce point de vue. Le

HIS UNCLE WAS THIRD IN THE 2017 EDITION
Bred by Dianne Waldron, RB Kingmaker is a son of
Baseq Al Khalediah (Tiwaiq), who won the Qatar Total
French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge des 3ans (Gr1 PA)
in France. The dam, RB Royale Madame (Majd Al Arab),
was a debut winner over 1,200m (dirt) as a 3-year-old.
She has also produced RB Fassynator (Assy), fourth at
PA graded stakes level in the US, and RB Kings Bay
(General), a dual winner over 1,400m and 1,600m. The
grandam, Royale Fanfare (Monarch Ah), gained the
biggest of her four career wins in the Gladys Brown
Edwards Arabian Cup Distaff Stakes (Gr1 PA, 1,800m)
on dirt. She generated the 2017 Al Ruwais (Gr3 PA)
third RB So Rich (TH Richie).
