2022: a year of renewal
It can be said that 2022 was a year of rare intensity – in
view of a succession of events which characterise this
very definition. By way of comparison, the racing wor-
ld has retained a certain stability. Given that the world
economy is under pressure, with rampant inflation, our
industry's sources of revenue have remained more or
less constant. How many spheres can boast such sta-
bility?
The microcosm of PA racing is a reflection of global
trends. As the market for horses sold at public auction
has grown impressively and unexpectedly. That is by
expanding, and this is thanks to the emergence of new
markets in countries where racing is developing. Fur-
thermore, they have also overwhelmed the market in
which horses are bought privately, and which are ce-
ding more ground to the sales rings annually, given an
unprecedented number of sales agencies and digital
platforms. This mirrors perfectly what is happening in
the English thoroughbreds’ sector: as more transac-
tions involving good horses are taking place in the
public sales arena, whereas a dwindling number are
sold privately.
There are only a few weeks left before the 2022 season
draws to a close. However, we already know the identi-
ties of the division leaders in France.
As Khalifa Al Kuwari will top the owners’ list at the main
expense of Yas and Her Excellency Sheikha Reem Bint
Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani. Although the level of
competition is at an all-time high, it is pleasing to note
that the top ten hit parade has been embracing new
names. As exemplified by the Al Attiyah family and He-
lal Alalawi. As you will have ascertained from the va-
rious editions of JDG Arabians, there are quite a few
owners who gained their first success with PA horses in
2022. May they continue to succeed in 2023 and serve
to inspire others to do the same.
Amongst the breeders, it came as no surprise that Al
Shaqab finished ahead of Yas and Al Shahania. Howe-
ver, we must underline the great achievements, given
their small numbers of horses, of Bruno and Élodie Bel-
laud, Anthony Bascle, Renée-Laure Koch, Mohammad
Al Nujaifi... Again, via the medium of the columns of
JDG Arabians, we have never ceased to highlight those
individuals who have "produced" their first winners,
and to give a voice to these breeders who are only too
often just a name on a race card.
On the trainers’ front, Thomas Fourcy is ahead in the
rankings with François Rohaut and Xavier Thomas-De-
meaulte his nearest pursuers. The young Jean de

2022, l’année du renouvellement
On peut le dire, l’année 2022 a été d’une intensité rare,
avec une succession d’événements d’une rare intensité.
Dans cette évolution, le galop conserve une certaine
stabilité. Alors que l’économie mondiale est mise à
mal, avec une inflation galopante, les sources de reve-
nu de notre filière sont restées à peu près constantes.
Combien d’univers peuvent se prévaloir d’une telle sta-
bilité ?
Le microcosme du pur-sang arabe apporte sa part à la
tendance globale. Le marché public a connu une crois-
sance aussi impressionnante qu’inattendue. En s’élar-
gissant, grâce à l’arrivée de nouveaux marchés dans
des pays où les courses se développent. Mais aussi
en phagocytant les transactions amiables qui cèdent
chaque année un peu plus de terrain face aux rings,
avec un nombre d’agences de vente et de plateformes
digitales jamais atteint jusqu’alors. C’est exactement ce
qu’il se passe avec les pur-sang anglais : plus de tran-
sactions sur les bons chevaux en vente publique, mais
moins de moins d’amiables.
Il ne reste que quelques semaines avant de clore la sai-
son sportive 2022. Mais on connaît déjà les noms des
leaders de l’année en France.
C’est Khalifa Al Kuwari qui va terminer tête de liste des
propriétaires, devant Yas et Son Excellence la cheikha
Reem bint Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani. Même si
le niveau de la compétition atteint des sommets, il est
heureux de constater que le top-dix s’ouvre à des nou-
veaux noms. Comme par exemple la famille Al Attiyah
ou encore Helal Alalawi. Comme vous l’avez certai-
nement constaté au fil des éditions de JDG Arabians,
ils sont finalement assez nombreux, les propriétaires
qui ont gagné pour la première fois avec les pur-sang
arabes en 2022. Puissent-ils continuer à réussir en 2023
et faire naître d’autres vocations autour d’eux.
Chez les éleveurs, sans surprise, Al Shaqab devance
Yas et Al Shahania. Mais il faut souligner les belles per-
formances, avec peu de chevaux, de Bruno et d’Élo-
die Bellaud, d’Anthony Bascle, de Renée-Laure Koch,
Mohammad Al Nujaifi… Toujours, dans les colonnes
de JDG Arabians, nous n’avons eu de cesse de mettre

Mieulle, who has just caused a sensation with First
Classs in the Jewel Crown, is now well established in
the top 10.
Regarding the jockeys, the young Valentin Seguy is
tops following 12 wins which underpins a superb strike
rate. He has proved himself the dominant force at the
expense of the established names Ioritz Mendizabal
and Anthony Crastus...
This edition, which you have in your possession (or
rather on your screen) is the last edition of 2022. Each
year, the readership continues to grow and that makes
us particularly proud. JDG Arabians is a collective effort
which relies on a team that is small in size but highly
motivated. We have two main aims: to inform the va-
rious parties within the PA industry of the main issues of
the day. However, we are also striving to introduce this
sector to the racing world in general, and in particular
by sending each edition to the thousands of subscri-
bers to Jour de Galop. This is a long ‘conversion’ pro-
cess that only we in the general equine media have
undertaken. All this is possible thanks to the support of
AFAC and all the parties in the PA industry. So I would
like to thank them for their support. See you in 2023!

Du côté des entraîneurs, Thomas Fourcy fait la course

sensation avec First Classs dans la Jewel Crown, est
désormais bien implanté dans le top-dix.
Chez les jockeys, la palme revient au jeune Valentin Se-

L’édition que vous avez entre les mains (ou plutôt sur
votre écran) est la dernière de 2022. Chaque année,
vous êtes plus nombreux à nous lire et cela nous rend
particulièrement fiers. JDG Arabians est un travail col-
lectif, avec une équipe petite par la taille, mais grande
par la motivation. Nous avons deux grandes missions :
informer les acteurs de la filière du pur-sang arabe, en
allant à l’essentiel. Mais aussi faire découvrir cette filière
au monde du galop en général, notamment en pro-
posant chaque édition aux milliers d’abonnés de Jour
de Galop. Un long travail de prosélytisme que nous
sommes le seul média hippique généraliste à mener.
Tout cela est possible grâce au soutien de l’Afac et de
l’ensemble des acteurs de la filière du pur-sang arabe.

Yet again, the AFAC would like to thank all our sponsors

level is also on the rise, and the Sheikh Mansoor Festival
– Critérium des Pouliches, run at La Teste, was upgraded,
having been accorded Gr1 PA status this year. Lastly, the
harmonisation process whereby prize money levels in-
crease on a yearly basis continues, and with particular
relevance to the 2023 season! The Racing Calendar/pro-
gramme for 2023 is due to be unveiled shortly.

Lastly, we are applying the final touches to our annual
publications, the Arabian Yearbook and PA Stallion
Book, and they will appear in the early part of 2023.
TOUCHING THE SUBJECT MATTER OF THE ICSI
PROCESS
On the other hand, as we approach the opening of a
new breeding season, we feel it is important to remind
you that the ICSI process has been prohibited within the
orbit of PA racing since 2013! This ruling was upheld by
the WAHO (World Arabian Horse Organisation) General
Assembly hosted by Jordan in October.
The Intracytoplasmic sperm injection – or ICSI for short
– consists in artificially reproducing the fertilisation of the
oocyte. This means injecting a sperm cell directly into a
female gamete. It is important to note that WAHO rule
no. 21 – in force since 1st January 2013 – specifies that
no horse resulting from in vitro fertilisation may be eli-
gible for inclusion in any Arabian horse Studbook.

AU SUJET DE L'ICSI
D’autre part, à l’approche de l’ouverture d’une nouvelle
saison de monte, il nous paraît important de rappeler
que l'Icsi est une technique interdite chez les pur-sang
arabes depuis 2013 ! Cette règle a été encore confir-
mée par la Waho, lors de sa dernière Assemblée géné-
rale en Jordanie, au mois d’octobre 2022.
L’intra cytoplasmic sperm injection – ou Icsi – consiste
à reproduire artificiellement la fécondation de l’ovo-
cyte. C’est-à-dire à injecter un spermatozoïde directe-
ment dans un gamète femelle. Il est alors primordial
de noter que la règle Waho n°21 – applicable depuis
le 1er janvier 2013 – spécifie qu’aucun cheval issu
d'une fécondation in vitro ne peut être inscrit à un
stud-book arabe.

MASSIMILIANO NARDUZZI MARKS HIS SUCCESSFUL
VENTURE IN THE PA SPHERE VIA ZAMER
AVEC ZAMER, MASSIMILIANO NARDUZZI RÉUSSIT SON ENTRÉE CHEZ LES PUR-SANG ARABES
Italian national Massimiliano Narduzzi celebrated
his first PA Group win as a breeder via Zamer (Ni-
zam) – now trained by Thomas Fourcy – in the Prix
Chéri Bibi (Gr3 PA) at Toulouse on October 24th.
He also trained the colt at the beginning of his
career in Italy before selling him to Al Shahania.
On the other side of the Alps, Massimiliano Narduzzi
(Scuderia Clodia) is a familiar name in the Anglo-Ara-
bian milieu. His French forays with this particular breed
have resulted in big race wins for Chimera Da Clodia
(Bombolino) and Bosilvia Da Clodia (Bombolino), with
both taking the Grand Prix des Pouliches (the equi-
valent of the Prix de Diane for the breed) at Tarbes,
in addition to snaring another coveted prize, the Prix
Omnium, following the win of Bonbon (Bombolino).
The latter, now a stallion, has, in turn, sired the Prix de
la Fédération winner Imperatore da Clodia (Bonbon).
Regarding the PA sphere, he currently trains Amour

Le 24 octobre à Toulouse, l’Italien Massimilia-
no Narduzzi a gagné son premier Groupe en tant
qu’éleveur avec Zamer (Nizam), dans le Prix Ché-
ri Bibi (Gr3 PA). Il a élevé et entraîné ce poulain en
début de carrière en Italie, avant de le vendre à Al
Shahania. Zamer est désormais pensionnaire de
Thomas Fourcy.
De l’autre côté des Alpes, Massimiliano Narduzzi (Scu-
deria Clodia) est très connu avec les anglo-arabes. Il est
d’ailleurs venu remporter en France plusieurs grandes
courses pour cette race avec Chimera da Clodia (Bom-
bolino) et Bosilvia da Clodia (Bombolino), gagnantes
du Grand Prix des Pouliches (le Diane des anglos) à
Tarbes, mais aussi l’important Prix Omnium avec Bon-
bon (Bombolino). Ce dernier, devenu étalon, est à son
tour le père d’Imperatore da Clodia (Bonbon), gagnant
du Prix de la Fédération. Chez les pur-sang arabes, il

at Chilivani, Sardinia. Massimiliano Narduzzi oversees
the running of thalassotherapy treatment centre for
horses... and is also involved in preparing horses for
palios – local horse races of medieval origin –: "The
best known palio is the Siena version but there are
many others. It’s requires a special kind of training. An-
glo-Arabian horses often run in them. I started out 20
years ago. Palios are a very important sport in Italy. A
lot of enthusiasm revolves around these events and it
has since become very professional."

préparer des chevaux aux palios : « Le plus connu des
palios est celui de Sienne. Mais il y en a beaucoup
d’autres. C’est un entraînement particulier. On y fait
souvent courir des anglo-arabes. J’ai commencé il y
a 20 ans. En Italie, les palios, c’est un sport très im-
portant. Il y a beaucoup d’enthousiasme autour de ces
événements et cela s’est d’ailleurs beaucoup profes-
sionnalisé. »

a seven year period in which
she was barren, the mare pro-
duced Madjani (Tidjani) for
me. Zamer then came along.

From the outset, Zamer showed himself to be something
out of the ordinary. He won five races on the bounce in
Italy. I subsequently received an offer from Al Shahania...
In the Gr1 PA race at Saint-Cloud, he didn’t run well.
Although it must be said that changing stables is often
unsettling for a horse. To go from a small stable to a big
yard, such as the Thomas Fourcy one, requires a period
of adaptation.
He showed his true mettle at Toulouse. To win a Group
race in France is a great satisfaction. They are high le-
vel affairs. I currently have ten PA mares in Italy, some of
which are partnership arrangements. Factoring the An-
glo-Arabians and the English thoroughbreds out of the
equation, I don’t wish to have any more. I would rather
bank on increasing the quality."

une grosse écurie comme celle de Thomas Fourcy, il
faut du temps pour s’adapter.
À Toulouse, il a montré sa vraie valeur. Et remporter
un Groupe en France, c’est une grande satisfaction. Ce
sont des courses de haut niveau. Aujourd'hui, j’ai une
dizaine de poulinières pur-sang arabes en Italie, dont
certaines en association. Sans compter les anglo-arabes
et les pur-sang anglais. Je ne veux pas en avoir plus.
Mais plutôt essayer d’augmenter la qualité. »

SAUBOUAS ARE TOPS
LE TOP POUR SAUBOUAS

On November 23rd, Auctav organised two online
sessions, one for PA 2-year-olds and horses-in-training,
which entailed 11 lots being sold for an average price
of €10,800. The other session revolved around bree-
ding stock, with the eight lots sold averaging €25,582.
In total, 19 of the 48 lots catalogued (40 per cent) found
buyers, and the overall average was €17,000. Arnaud
Angéliaume, the Auctav Managing Director, said: "The
open sale has taught us a lot. The PA market had, until
recently, only one major sale, and we will make adjust-
ments to what is on offer next year so as to meet eve-
ryone’s expectations as best as possible."
More than half of the horses in the 2-year-old and horses-
in-training session found buyers. Saubouas Bloodstock
was the most active of these, having purchased the PA
2-year-old Ainhoa Folwin (Dahess) for €16,000, and Taya
(Dahess), a PA 3-year-old of whom Xavier Thomas-De-
meaulte is expecting great things as a 4-year-old. On the
PA broodmare front, Saubouas Bloodstock paid €25,000
for Mhajiz (Munjiz), and herself a half-sister to the multi-
ple Gr1 PA placed PA Monda (No Risk Al Maury).
Paul Basquin (Saubouas Bloodstock) said: "Taya was a
very late foal, having been born in June, so she will still
develop physically. Her second place at Toulouse was
a good effort. A picture of good health, the filly will be
exported to Doha in order to continue her racing career.
As for Ainhoa Folwin, he’s an attractive PA 2-year-old by
Dahess, and the brother of Ainhoa Petrucio (Séraphin du

Le 23 novembre, Auctav organisait deux sessions en
ligne, une pour les 2ans et les chevaux à l’entraînement,
avec 11 lots vendus à une moyenne de 10.800 €. Et une
pour les sujets à l’élevage avec 8 lots vendus pour une
moyenne de 25.582 €. Au total, 19 des 48 lots au cata-
logue (40 %) ont trouvé preneurs, la moyenne globale

ter having been placed at Gr1 PA, and who will be one
of the top PA mares next season. Munjiz has all the hall-
marks of becoming a very good broodmare sire. She will
be an easy filly which to breed from, being devoid of the
blood of Amer."
Consigned by the Haras de Thouars and in-foal to Al
Mourtajez, Neige Al Maury (Dormane) was bought priva-

JADEEDA FETCHES €60,000
Jaddeeda (Njewman) was consigned in-foal to Af Alba-
har. A maternal half-sister to Handassa and Jamaheer,
the Critérium des Pouliches (Gr2 PA) winner, she has
gone on to foal the excellent Madrassa.
Meridian Bloodstock bought the mare privately for
€60,000. Ghislain Bozo explained: "She’s a very well-re-
lated mare, and one which appealed to me as a prospect
from which to breed from."
Kaval de Ghazal (Al Mourtajez) is out of a sister to the
Gr1 PA winning Kaoe de Ghazal (Kesberoy), and herself
responsible for producing the outstanding PA distaffer
Kiss de Ghazal (Dormane). Damien de Watrigant bought
this 2-year-old PA colt for €17,000 and he said: "He’s
a colt I caught sight of at William Walton’s. I liked him
as he reminded me of Al Ghadeer physically. In terms
of ownership, he will race for a group of friends, a
partnership revived by myself, and one which proved
successful for us with a PA horse in the past."
Al Cem Stud paid €20,000 for the foal Caipirinha
d’Arteo (Al Mourtajez) whose dam is a daughter of
Dormane (Manganate), and very closely related to the
PA Group winning pair, Izadi Star (Azadi) and Joe Star (Al
Mourtajez). Chloé Marchandet (Al Cem Stud) explained:
"I bought this foal for a client because as the maternal
line is starting to yield very good results, and because
her sire, Al Mourtajez, has been prolific PA stallion this
year. We hope that she will be even better than Joe Star,
who is from the same family. She will be reared in France,
at the family stud, before going into training abroad."

The downsizing process of Qatari owner Sheail Bin Kha-
lifa Al Kuwari took place on December 8th at the iwant-
thewinner.com online sale. All 12 of the broodmares in
question were sold on the digital platform. The respec-
tive total turnover and average figures were €179,500
and €14,958. The agency reported that over 200
people, from ten different countries, hooked up online
to the sale.
Karama (Majd Al Arab) proved to be the sale topper.
She was acquired for €30,000 by Saudi Arabian natio-
nal Nasser Alshabibi. He said: "I wanted to thank Mr Al
Kuwari and I Want the Winner for this opportunity and
great experience. My goal is to breed a Group winner
from Karama. I bought this mare because she’s a winner,
and is by one of the top stallions Majed Al Arab. This is
additional to the fact that she’s in-foal to the top stallion
Nieshan."
Ajs Al Manaagieh (Amer) was sold privately to Kuwai-
ti national Hamad Al Hatlani for €26,000. He said: "I’m

ont toutes été vendues sur la plateforme. Le chiffre
d’affaires atteint 179.500 € et la moyenne 14.958 €.
L’agence a enregistré plus de 200 connexions venues
d’une dizaine de pays différents sur la plateforme.
Karama (Majd Al Arab) est le top price de cette ses-
sion. Elle a été achetée 30.000 € par le Saoudien
Nasser Alshabibi, lequel a déclaré : « Je tenais à
remercier monsieur Al Kuwari et I Want the Winner
pour cette opportunité et cette belle expérience.
J’ai l’ambition de voir un gagnant de Groupe issu

The physically imposing PA 3-year-old Juan de
Faust (Dormane) opened his account with a five and a
half lengths victory in the UAE National Archives Cup
- Sheikh Mansoor Festival. He races for a partnership
comprising Ferruccio Giacobbe – savouring his first PA
win – trainer Maurizio Guarnieri, plus breeders, Gérard
and Jean-Paul Larrieu. Maurizio Guarnieri explained:
"On his debut, he got stuck on the rails. In his second
race, at Agen, he didn't have a smooth race, before
running-on well to be third, while, at the same time,
proving a little temperamental. He was unsuited by the
soft ground at Toulouse. He’s a good colt but he needs
to be equipped with blinkers. This way, he applies him-
self more on a daily basis. The fibre-sand surface at Pau
on Wednesday gave him the opportunity to express his
quality. And that changed everything. Alexandre Gavi-
lan rode him with kid gloves and he won easily.
He’s a talented colt. I would like to find him some races
for him either on good to firm ground or on the fibre-
sand. I fell in love with Juan de Faust when I saw him at
the establishment of Gérard Larrieu."

Festival de cinq longueurs et demie. Il court pour une
association entre Ferruccio Giacobbe – dont il s’agit
de la première victoire chez les pur-sang arabes – et
son entraîneur, Maurizio Guarnieri, ainsi que ses éle-
veurs, Gérard et Jean-Paul Larrieu. Maurizio Guarnieri
nous a expliqué : « Lors de ses débuts, il a été coincé
à la corde. Pour sa deuxième course, à Agen, il n’a pas
eu un bon parcours avant de bien finir pour se clas-
ser troisième, tout en montrant un peu de caractère. À
Toulouse, lors de sa troisième course, le terrain souple
ne lui a pas convenu. C’est un bon poulain, mais il a
besoin d’être muni d’œillères. Ainsi, au quotidien, il est
plus concentré. La P.S.F. de mercredi à Pau lui a donné
l’occasion d’exprimer sa qualité. Et cela a tout changé.
Alexandre Gavilan l’a monté avec douceur et il a ga-
gné facilement. C’est un poulain talentueux. J’aimerais
lui trouver des engagements en terrain bon-léger ou
sur la P.S.F. Je suis tombé amoureux de Juan de Faust

[Wednesday, December 7th] the 3-year-old Jamaika de
Bozouls (Aim South) put the owner-breeder Marcel Mezy
in the spotlight. The Éric Dell’Ova runner also provided
the PA stallion Aim South (Burning Sand) with his first
French winner. The latter, a septuple Gr1 PA winner, co-
vers from the Haras de Thouars. Jamaika de Bozouls is
among the first French PA 3-year-olds by her sire, who
has produced black type performers in the US, to hit the
racecourse. Marlène Meyer, on dismounting, said: "I had
ridden her in Toulouse. I liked her a lot, but the next time
I rode her she didn’t like the heavy ground. Of course,
the filly was helped by the weight she carried but she’s
very tough…"

void of all Amer/French blood, this makes him a straight
forward outcross for breeding purposes. In France, the
blood of Burning Sand (San Lou Romirz) has proved par-
ticularly successful via his son TM Fred Texas (Burning
Sand). Very sound, with bags of speed, he had a long
career in the US." So Big Is Better’s dam is a daughter
of Zt Ali Baba (Moniet El Nafis), who is also the sire, on
the dam’s side, of Munjiz (Kesberoy). His racing career
spanned from the ages of 3 to 12 for a total of 29 wins
– 15 of them at stakes level – having banked $417,000
in purses over distances ranging from 900m to 2,000m.
As an 11-year-old, So Big Is Better won the Sheikh
Zayed Bin Sultan al Nahyan Arabian Cup Stakes (Gr1 PA,
1,600m, dirt), when he accounted for the best PA horse

An owner’s first victory is invariably a momentous oc-
casion. Harping back to 15th November, Jenkille Hipolyte
enabled the colours of Qatari national Osama Al Dafea
to shine for the first time on French soil. It was a pleasure
that was multiplied tenfold when the horse followed up
in a stakes races, the Prix Ourour (L PA), 12 days later...
JDG Arabians. – How does it feel to have your first
winner/Listed winner in France?
Osama Al Dafea. – It’s great, especially as I plan to
have more horses in France. This year I only had two: a
3-year-old filly, Jilaya Hipolyte (Madjani), as yet unraced,
and Jenkille Hipolyte (Al Mamun Monlau), who had pre-
viously contested a Gr1 PA race at Saint-Cloud. I have a
lot of young horses which I want to send here because
the level of racing in France is the best in the world, qua-
lity racing, which draws the best in terms of pedigree,
and the best PA types. So it’s all the more rewarding
when you win a Listed race in France.
What are the plans for Jenkille Hipolyte?
He is already entered in the Qatar Derby (Gr2 PA) which
will be run here at Doha on December 29 , after which

he could return to France, or head straight to the Amir
Sword (Gr1 PA) whose purse is expected to double this
year. Yes, Jenkille Hipolyte is a good horse. I bought
him when he was still a yearling. I left him in France until
he was three, which is in line with my policy with young

Une première victoire, pour un propriétaire, est tou-
jours un moment important. Le 15 novembre dernier,
Jenkille Hipolyte a permis aux couleurs du Qatari Osama
Al Dafea de briller pour la première fois sur notre sol. Un
plaisir décuplé lorsque le cheval a doublé la mise douze
jours plus tard en enlevant le Prix Ourour (L PA)…
JDG Arabians. – Quel effet cela fait-il d’avoir son
premier gagnant et son premier vainqueur de Listed
en France ?
Osama Al Dafea. – C’est très bien, surtout que j’envi-
sage d’avoir plus de chevaux en France. Cette année,
je n’en avais que deux. Une pouliche de 3ans nommée
Jilaya Hipolyte (Madjani) qui n’a pas encore débuté et
Jenkille Hipolyte (Al Mamun Monlau), qui avait aupara-
vant couru un Gr1 PA à Saint-Cloud. J’ai beaucoup de
jeunes chevaux que je compte amener ici car le niveau
des courses en France est le meilleur au monde. Des
courses de qualité, qui rassemblent ce qui se fait de
mieux au niveau pedigree et types de chevaux arabes.
C’est donc d’autant plus valorisant de gagner une
Listed en France.
Quel est le programme pour Jenkille Hipolyte ?
Il est d’ores et déjà engagé dans le Qatar Derby (Gr2
PA) qui se disputera ici, à Doha, le 29 décembre, et il
pourrait ensuite repartir en France ou bien venir direc-
tement courir l’Amir Sword (Gr1 PA) dont l’allocation

horses. I’m lucky to have such a horse. However, as
already stated, other horses will be sent to France.
Did you immediately detect his quality?
After setting eyes on him when he was in the care of
Stéphane Chazel, I was sure that I end up buying him.
He already exuded size and strength as a yearling. His
pedigree endowed him with stamina, scope, physi-
cal presence and speed. His older brother Freddy Py
(TM Fred Texas) beat a certain Messi (Dahess), a good
horse in his own right. All these factors led me to believe
that Jenkille Hipolyte would develop into a good horse.
Do you also breed horses in France?
I currently board three mares at stud, with good pe-
digrees, in order to produce horses to run here. I ac-
quired two Dutch mares, but ones with French blood
in their pedigrees. One of them, Lady Gogo (Munjiz),
produced Aljazera (Af Albahar), a filly born last year, and
due to go into training imminently, whereas the other
goes by the name of Djalba (Asraa Min Albarq).
Where does this passion for horses emanate from?
My passion for horses derives from my father. We’ve
always had horses back home. I started riding horses
fairly early on, after which I went to the US to study. On
my return, I started buying horses for endurance/show
purposes. I love all types of horses, even though I only
have racehorses now.
You have also been a trainer at Doha for many years?
I currently train 23 horses, a mix of English thoroughbreds
and PA horses in Qatar. They are all owned by me. I don’t
train for other owners. One of my horses contested the

Vous avez tout de suite décelé de la qualité en lui ?
Quand je l’ai vu chez Stéphane Chazel, j’étais certain
de l’acheter. À l’âge d’un an, il était déjà grand et cos-
taud. Par son pedigree, il avait la tenue, la taille, le phy-
sique et la vitesse. Il a un frère plus âgé qui s’appelle
Freddy Py (TM Fred Texas) qui a battu un certain Messi
(Dahess), un bon cheval. L’ensemble de ces éléments
me laissaient à penser que Jenkille Hipolyte serait lui
aussi un bon cheval.
Faites-vous de l’élevage également en France ?
J’ai désormais trois juments à l’élevage, avec de bons
pedigrees, afin de produire des chevaux pour courir
ici. J’ai acheté deux juments hollandaises mais avec du
sang français dans leur pedigree. L’une s’appelle Lady
Gogo (Munjiz), qui m’a donné récemment Aljazera
(Af Albahar), une pouliche née l’an passé qui va bientôt
partir à l’entraînement, et l’autre s’appelle Djalba (As-
raa Min Albarq).
D’où vient cette passion pour les chevaux ?
Ma passion des chevaux vient de mon père. Il y a tou-
jours eu des chevaux chez nous. J’ai rapidement monté
à cheval, puis je suis allé faire mes études aux États-

Al Quoz Sprint (Gr1) at Dubai in March. Going by the
name of Taxiwala (Holy Roman Emperor), he was sixth
under Ronan Thomas. He has won the last two editions
of the Dukhan Sprint (Gr3 – 1,200m), one of the big-
gest Qatari races sprints, and I hope to complete the
hat-trick this season. I was really honoured, as a small
owner-breeder, to be invited to have a runner on the Du-
bai World Cup card, and God has really provided me
with a precious gift in the form of this horse.
What elements are you looking for in a horse?
What is important to me is good physical confirmation.
It makes life easier for the horse easy and enables the
animal to last longer. Sometimes you can have a horse
with a good pedigree but bad confirmation. I acquired
a horse, Évolution du Croate (Dahess), who is still ra-
cing at the age of eight at Doha, having bankrolled close
to 400,000 (Qatari) riyals. A good pedigree and good
conformation will take you to the top level.
STÉPHANE CHAZEL: "A STORY OF FRIENDSHIP"
JDG Arabians. – How long have you both known
each other?
Stéphane Chazel. – I have known him for 20 years. We
are more friends than business partners. He has had two
horses in France. I met him at the end of the 1990s. He
was the trainer of the Qatari national endurance team
at the time. I myself was a rider/trainer in the endurance
sector. At that time, he leased me around ten horses,
and I accompanied his whole team to Jordan, for three
months, to the Pan Arab Games. We won the gold me-
dal. We’ve remained in touch ever since. He bought his
first horse from me three years ago, Goingfor Al Baraka
(TM Fred Texas), a winner in France and second in the
Prix Chéri Bibi (Gr3 PA). He also acquired another of my
homebreds, the filly Jilaya Hipolyte (Madjani), born at
my stud, and currently in training
with Charles Gourdain. She is
ready to race.
So he places his trust in you?
He bought Jenkille from me as a
weanling. I reared and broke him
in, having also undertaken the
pre-training phase, before advi-
sing him to send the horse into
training with Charles Gourdain,
who oversees the care of my own
horses. I think that he has no cause
for regret.
Can you outline the thinking
behind the breeding of Jenkille Hipolyte?
I’m the breeder of Via Hipolyte (Dahess), the dam of
Jenkille, and the first PA mare to win in my colours.

propriétaires. En mars dernier, un de mes chevaux a
disputé l'Al Quoz Sprint (Gr1) à Dubaï. Ce cheval, qui
s’appelle Taxiwala (Holy Roman Emperor), a terminé
sixième avec Ronan Thomas. Il a remporté les deux
dernières éditions de la Dukhan Sprint (Gr3, 1.200 m),
l’une des plus grandes courses sur la distance au Qatar
et j’espère faire le triplé cette année. J’étais vraiment
honoré, comme petit propriétaire et éleveur, d’être in-
vité le jour de la Dubai World Cup et Dieu m’a vraiment
offert un cadeau précieux d’avoir un tel cheval.
Qu’est-ce qui est important pour un cheval, à vos
yeux ?
Ce qui est important pour moi, c’est une bonne confor-
mité physique. Cela donne des facilités au cheval et
lui permet de durer plus longtemps. Parfois, vous avez
un cheval avec un bon pedigree mais une mauvaise
conformité. J’ai acheté un cheval, Évolution du Croate
(Dahess), qui court toujours à Doha à l’âge de 8ans et
qui a gagné près de 400.000 riyals. Un bon pedigree
et une bonne conformité physique vous amènera au
top-niveau.
STÉPHANE CHAZEL : « UNE HISTOIRE D’AMITIÉ »
JDG Arabians. – Depuis quand vous connaissez-vous
tous les deux ?
Stéphane Chazel. – Je le connais depuis 20 ans. Nous
sommes d’ailleurs plus amis que partenaires de bu-
siness. C’est le deuxième cheval qu’il a en France. Je
l’ai rencontré à la fin des années
1990. Il était alors entraîneur de
l’équipe nationale du Qatar d’en-
durance. Moi-même, j’étais cava-
lier et entraîneur en endurance.
À cette époque, il m’a loué une
dizaine de chevaux et je suis parti
avec toute son équipe pour une
durée de trois mois en Jordanie,
pour les Jeux Panarabes. Nous
avons gagné la médaille d’or.
Depuis, nous sommes restés en
contact. Il m’a acheté un premier
cheval il y a trois ans, qui s’ap-
pelait Goingfor Al Baraka (TM Fred Texas), gagnant
en France et deuxième du Prix Chéri Bibi (Gr3 PA). Il
m’a également acheté une pouliche, Jilaya Hipolyte

I decided to breed her to Al Mamun Monlau (Munjiz)
so as to impart some French blood, as the mare was
by a son of Amer (Wafi). I was attracted by the fact that
Al Mamun Monlau boasts the presence of Tidjani (Flip-
per) in his maternal line, which ensures that the ensuing
progeny are in-bred. If you are looking to breed a French
PA stallion with a mare by Amer, or one of his sons...
the choice isn’t limitless. Nieshan (Akbar) has since ste-
pped up to the plate, but four years ago he was still AN
unknown quantity compared to what he has since beco-
me today.
Jenkille Hipolyte seems to have a very strong build?
Jenkille Hipolyte is very physically imposing. I think
he will be an exceptional PA 4-year old because he
has yet to fill out in muscular terms. He already stood
1.60m (over 15 ½ hands) tall as a 2-year old! These big-
ger horses tend to be more backward than the smaller,
stocky types. This is also down to the way in which I
breed my horses. The horses inhabit the great outdoors
the whole time, except for their very first winter. This
makes them more backward but also stronger, to my way
of thinking. Jenkille Hipolyte is as tough as teak. Charles
Gourdain surprised me by backing up fairly quickly in his
races. However, when I went to see him the day before
he raced at Pau, Jenkille Hipolyte was unbelievable in
terms of limb confirmation. As clean as a whistle, there
was even not the slightest hint of any bog sparvin or de-
formity. That’s really his great attribute.

mes propres chevaux. Je crois qu’il ne le regrette pas.
Quelle est un peu la genèse de Jenkille Hipolyte ?
Je suis le naisseur de Via Hipolyte (Dahess), la mère de
Jenkille, qui a été la première jument arabe de course à
gagner sous mes couleurs. J’ai choisi Al Mamun Mon-
lau (Munjiz) pour la saillir car cela amenait du sang fran-
çais, la jument étant par un fils d’Amer (Wafi). J’étais
séduit par le fait qu’Al Mamun Monlau possède Tidjani
(Flipper) dans son pedigree maternel, ce qui permet-
tait un inbreeding. Si vous cherchez un étalon français
pour aller sur une jument par Amer ou un de ses fils…
Le choix n’est pas illimité. Aujourd’hui, il y a Nieshan
(Akbar) qui a bien percé, mais quatre ans en arrière, il
n’était pas reconnu comme aujourd'hui.
Jenkille Hipolyte semble vraiment un cheval très solide…
Jenkille Hipolyte est très grand. Je pense qu’il fera
un 4ans exceptionnel car, musculairement, il n’est pas
complètement rempli. Il faisait déjà 1,60m à 2ans ! Ces
grands chevaux sont plus tardifs que ceux plus petits
et trapus. C’est aussi lié à ma façon d’élever. Les che-
vaux évoluent sur de grands espaces et dehors tout le
temps, sauf le premier hiver. Cela fait des animaux plus
tardifs mais plus solides aussi, je crois. Jenkille Hipolyte
est vraiment dur au mal. Charles Gourdain m’a étonné
en le faisant courir rapproché. Mais lorsque je suis allé
le voir la veille de la course à Pau, Jenkille Hipolyte était
incroyable au niveau des tissus de ses jambes. Il était
sec, pas une molette, pas un vessigon… C’est vraiment
sa grande qualité.

The earth shook in Abu Dhabi! As First Classs (Dahess)
won the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Jewel Crown
(Gr1 PA) after holding the defending champion Lady
Princess (General) by a length. In doing so, the Nayef Saad
Al Kaabi representative enabled the young trainer Jean de
Mieulle to savour a first Gr1 PA win. Ronan Thomas gave
the winner a perfect ride, with the combination poised
to strike behind the leaders, as the Olivier Peslier-ridden
Soko (Nieshan) led the field a merry dance. The pace was
a strong one, and before the final turn, we could already
discern that see some horses going backwards.
True to her style, Lady Princess languished at the back
of the pack. First Classs started to make a forward move
on the final bend, and, proving as tough as teak, he dug
deep to repel turn the persistent challenge of the mare. A
PA Gr2 course winner, local hope Hameem (Valiant Boy)
was three lengths further adrift in third. The other French
riders, Djafar (Dahess) and Teema (Bibi de Carrère), were
fifth and sixth respectively, whereas Monda (No Risk Al
Maury) was a non-runner.
A FORMIDABLE OPPONENT ON GOOD GROUND
IN WINTER
First Classs had exploded into life last winter when win-
ning at Riyadh followed by Dubai, where he won the

Coup de tonnerre à Abu Dhabi ! First Classs (Dahess)
a remporté la Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Jewel
Crown (Gr1 PA), devançant d’une longueur la tenante
du titre, Lady Princess (General). Le représentant de
Nayef Saad Al Kaabi offre un premier Gr1 PA à son
jeune entraîneur, Jean de Mieulle. Ronan Thomas a
donné le parcours parfait à son partenaire, en embus-
cade derrière les animateurs, le peloton étant emmené
par Soko (Nieshan) et Olivier Peslier. Le rythme à fait
sélection et avant l’ultime tournant, on voyait déjà des
concurrents en train de craquer.
Comme à son habitude, Lady Princess a galopé à l’ar-
rière-garde. First Class a commencé à faire mouvement
dans le dernier tournant et s’est montré dur pour ré-
sister jusqu’au bout au retour de la jument. Lauréat de
Gr2 sur cette piste, le local Hameem (Valiant Boy) est
troisième à trois longueurs. Les autres français, Djafar
(Dahess) et Teema (Bibi de Carrère), sont cinquième et
sixième, alors que Monda (No Risk Al Maury) a été dé-
clarée non-partante.
UN CHEVAL REDOUTABLE EN BON TERRAIN
L’HIVER
First Classs avait explosé l’hiver dernier, s’imposant à
Riyad puis à Dubaï, dans la Kahayla Classic (Gr1 PA).

Kahayla Classic (Gr1 PA). Having transferred from the
stables of Alban de Mieulle to those of his nephew Jean,
First Classs went on to finish second in the Qatar Cup –
Prix Dragon (Gr1 PA), before taking fifth in the Qatar Ara-
bian World Cup (Gr1 PA) on testing ground which clearly
didn’t suit. Jean de Mieulle said: "A combination of fac-
tors led to First Classs joining my stable: as his breeder
had recommended that the horse should be sent to me,
and Alban, too, of course, did his part. We were a bit
disappointed with his European season, as you expect
to be competitive from the get-go given that he had
already won two big races in the Gulf. The horse nee-
ded to learn how to adapt to the pace of French racing,
and he didn't disappoint at either Goodwood or Long-
champ. He won in very good style today. It has proved a
great experience." The race carried a purse of 5 million
United Arab Emirates Dirhams, which is the equivalent of
1,29 million euros.
HAILING FROM A VERY SPEEDY US LINE
First Classs was bred at Cre Run Farm, Virginia, by
Alan Kirshner and Deborah Mihaloff. He’s a son of
Dahess (Amer): the Al Shaqab Racing sire based at the
Haras de Thouars. First Classs began his career in the
US where he won three races, including the Gr1 Texas
Lone Star Juvenile Stakes at Lone Star Park (west of
Dallas). He’s a full brother to Iridesse (Dahess), a triple
winner, and runner-up in the Buzz Brauinger Arabian
Distaff Handicap (Gr1 PA local, 1,800m, dirt). The dam,
Toppofthe Class (Genuine Monarch), won her maiden
over 1,200m at three, and was third in the Arabian
Cup Championship Juvenile Fillies Stakes (Gr1 PA lo-
cal, 1,600m) at Delaware Park. The great grandam,
Top Star (Sambor), is a half-sister to the exceptional
talent Patriot Missle (Wiking), the US PA Darley Horse

Transféré des boxes d’Alban de Mieulle à ceux de son
neveu, Jean, First Classs avait pris la deuxième place
de la Qatar Cup – Prix Dragon (Gr1 PA) puis s’était clas-
sé cinquième de la Qatar Arabian World Cup (Gr1 PA),
sur un terrain pénible qui ne l’avait pas servi. Jean de
Mieulle nous a déclaré : « C’est un faisceau de facteurs
qui ont permis que First Classs arrive dans mon écurie :
son éleveur qui a conseillé de me l’envoyer, Alban aussi
bien entendu. Nous étions un peu déçus de sa saison
européenne car avec un cheval qui vient de gagner deux
grosses courses dans le Golfe, on s’attend à être com-
pétitifs d’emblée. Le cheval avait besoin d’apprendre
le rythme des courses françaises, et il n’a pas démérité,
ni à Goodwood ni à Longchamp. Il gagne très bien au-
jourd’hui. C’est une super expérience. » Cette course est
dotée de 5.000.000 de Dirham des Émirats arabes unis,
soit l’équivalent de 1,29 million d’euros.
UNE SOUCHE AMÉRICAINE AVEC BEAUCOUP DE
VITESSE

After an absence of over a year, the reappearance
of Af Alwajel (Af Al Buraq) was eagerly awaited in the
Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan National Day Cup
(Gr3 PA) on December 4 . The defending champion,
th
he boasts three Gr3 PA wins over the Abu Dhabi mile.
Despite a wide draw, the Khalid Khalifa Al Nabooda re-
presentative didn’t have to unduly force his talent to win
this. Patrick Dobbs let his mount go forward of his own
accord, and the combination travelled easily enough in
mid-division. Indeed, Af Alwajel was never far off the
pace, despite the race being run at a good clip from the
start. The future winner clearly had plenty left to give
on the turn, and his jockey positioned his mount on the
outside of the field, and the winner may even have got
his head in front going to the final stages. In the straight,
the winner became involved in a protracted duel with
Bahar Muscat (Af Albahar). However, Af Alwajel, without
his jockey having to be hard on his mount, had all the
right answers and he eventually prevailed by a little over
a length. Bahar Muscat was second. Munir du Soleil (Mu-
njiz) took a while to pick up, but he finished very strongly
into third, and only narrowly missed out on second. With
the country abuzz with excitement in the wake of the
National Day festivities, Af Alwajel’s trainer Ernst Oertel
said: "I’m really proud of my horse’s performance after

Après plus d’un an d’absence, Af Alwajel (Af Al

Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan National Day Cup (Gr3),
le 4 décembre. Tenant du titre de cette épreuve, il a
gagné trois Grs3 sur le mile d’Abu Dhabi. Malgré un
numéro à l’extérieur, le représentant de Khalid Khalifa
Al Nabooda n’a pas été contraint de fournir un grand
effort. Patrick Dobbs l’a laissé avancer à sa main et il
est facilement venu se placer au milieu des chevaux. Il
a évolué non loin des leaders, alors que la course a été
sélective dès le départ. Le futur lauréat avait visible-
ment beaucoup de gaz dans le tournant et son jockey
l’a alors fait progresser à l’extérieur du peloton pour
venir aborder la phase finale quasiment en tête. Dans la
ligne droite, il a lutté très longuement avec Bahar Mus-
cat (Af Albahar). Mais Af Alwajel, sans que son jockey
ne soit obligé d’être dur avec lui, a créé la différence et
il s’impose d’un peu plus d’une longueur. Bahar Muscat
est deuxième. Munir du Soleil (Munjiz) a mis du temps
à enclencher, mais il a fini très fort pour prendre la troi-
sième place, échouant de peu pour un meilleur classe-
ment. Alors que le pays était animé par les festivités de
la fête nationale, Ernst Oertel, l’entraîneur d’Af Alwajel,

Harping back to November 15th, Jenkille Hipolyte
(Al Mamun Monlau) won in style at Toulouse. Further
down the line, and for this read November 27th, the colt
showed his battling qualities in the Prix Ourour (L PA),
which enabled Qatari owner, Osama Aldafea, to enjoy
his first French Listed PA win. Jenkille Hipolyte proved
good enough to repel the persistent challenge of Al Jai-
sh (Azadi) to the bitter end. The Charles Gourdain run-
ner has clearly moved up a gear, despite still being a
little green.
COURAGE AND IMMATURITY
Jenkille Hipolyte was smartly away as was the case on
his last (winning) start. The future winner set the tempo,
and he was tracked by Dolon (Al Mourtajez) on his in-
side, and Al Jaish on the outside. Exiting the final bend,
Jenkille Hipolyte upped the tempo in the middle of the
track, despite veering a little off a true course. Al Jai-
sh, the only one capable of bustling up the winner, laid
down the gauntlet in the final 100m. A fierce struggle
ensued, but it was Jenkille Hipolyte, ridden by Anthony
Crastus, who prevailed after denying his rival by a head
at the wire. Haka du Soleil (Munjiz) ran on to deprive Do-
lon of third. The winning jockey, Anthony Crastus, told

Le 15 novembre, Jenkille Hipolyte (Al Mamun Mon-
lau) s’était imposé avec la manière à Toulouse. Et le 27
novembre, le poulain a doublé la mise, en costaud, à
l’occasion du Prix Ourour (L PA), offrant un premier suc-
cès de Listed en France au propriétaire qatari Osama
Aldafea. Jenkille Hipolyte a été assez fort pour repous-
ser jusqu’au bout l’attaque d’Al Jaish (Azadi) dans la
phase finale. Le pensionnaire de Charles Gourdain a
clairement franchi un cap, tout en se montrant encore
un peu vert.
DU COURAGE ET DE L’IMMATURITÉ
Jenkille Hipolyte a pris un bon départ, comme il l’avait
fait lors de sa dernière sortie (victorieuse). Le futur lau-
réat a animé, suivi par Dolon (Al Mourtajez) à son inté-
rieur et par Al Jaish à l’extérieur. À la sortie du tournant
final, Jenkille Hipolyte est passé à l’attaque en pleine
piste, tout en flottant un peu. Al Jaish, le seul à par-
venir à le suivre, lui a porté une belle attaque à 100m.
Les deux compétiteurs ont longuement lutté mais c’est
Jenkille Hipolyte, associé à Anthony Crastus, qui a su
conserver une tête d’avance au passage du poteau
sur son rival. Haka du Soleil (Munjiz) vient prendre la

Equidia: "This horse can still improve. This was a good
engagement for him. The sticky ground doesn’t bother
him. He scored a stylish win here last time. Following on
from this, he’s a horse that you have to take in hand. A
little green at the moment, he has a lot of quality. I think
that he will develop into a good horse next year."
A TOUGH CUSTOMER
Charles Gourdain chimed: "It was a good engagement,
as we returned to the same track as last time, but the
ground wasn’t quite the same, as it was riding on the
sticky side, even very soft. He’s a tough customer, very
tough even. The interesting element, and I’m repeating
myself, is that the horse is only operating at 70 per cent
of his potential. In muscular terms, he needs to develop
and is still immature. He veered sharply towards the fi-
nish. He’s a horse that you really need to take in hand,
and Anthony Crastus makes very good use of him. We
will now rough him off for the season, and it remains to
be seen what we will do with him next year. He finished
fourth on his first three starts. It has taken quite a while
for the penny to drop and to progress, but he’s now be-
ginning to understand what is required of him. However,
he’s still a work in progress. His real strength is his mind-
set. I would like to thank his owner, Osama Aldafea, for
placing his trust in us."

Anthony Crastus a déclaré au micro d’Equidia : « C’est
un cheval encore perfectible. C’était encore un bel en-
gagement aujourd’hui. Le terrain collant ne le dérange
pas. Il avait gagné ici en dernier lieu de bonne manière.
Après, c’est un cheval qu’il faut avoir en main. Il est un
petit peu vert pour le moment mais possède pas mal
de qualité. Je pense qu’il va faire un bon cheval pour
l’année prochaine. »
UN CHEVAL DUR
Charles Gourdain a également réagi : « C’était un
engagement favorable, on court sur le même hippo-
drome, sur un terrain qui n’est pas tout à fait le même
que la dernière fois, mais bien collant, voire très souple.
C’est un cheval dur, très dur. Ce qui est intéressant et je
me répète, c’est qu’il n’est qu’à 70 % de ses moyens. Il
est encore musculairement très plat et immature. Il dé-
robe d’ailleurs pour finir. Il faut vraiment l’avoir en main
et Anthony Crastus s’en sert très bien. On va le laisser
tranquille désormais et on verra ce que l’on fait avec lui
l’année prochaine. Lors de ses trois premières courses,
il a fini quatrième. Il a mis du temps à monter la marche,
à progresser, et il commence aujourd’hui à comprendre
ce qu’on lui demande. Mais il y a encore du travail. Sa
force, c’est son mental. Je remercie son propriétaire,
Osama Aldafea, pour sa confiance. »

Beaten a head by First Classs (Dahess) in last year’s
Kahayla Classic (Gr1 PA), the French-bred Kerless del
Roc (Dahess) didn’t have to force his talent to win the
Madjani Stakes (Gr2 PA). After making a beeline for
the lead, the Marie-Christine Restes-bred runner was
in control throughout. Yet Deryan (Mahabb), having his
first run for trainer Majed Al Jahoori, seemed to be can-
tering at the entrance of the straight. However, whereas
Kerless del Roc found another gear, Deryan ended up
by losing second place to the running-on Barakka (AF
Al Buraq). Kerless del Roc had the advantage of a previ-
ous run under his belt this season, having finished sixth
in the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Jewel Crown
prep. More comfortable racing on dirt, the Al Ajban
Stables’ charge should follow a pathway that will log-
ically lead to another crack at the Kahayla Classic. On
dismounting, Fernando Jara, riding for trainer Ahmed
Al Mehairbi said: "That was always the plan with him:
to try and get a good position. Horses like this make
your job easy. He’s not a horse who runs well on his
first two races, as he improves during the season. Even
today, he wasn’t 100 per cent, and this should tighten
him up for the rest of the season. I think he will progress
again ahead of the big races later in the season."

Battu d’une tête l’an dernier dans le Kahayla Classic
(Gr1 PA) par First Classs (Dahess), le "FR" Kerless del Roc
(Dahess) n’a pas eu à forcer son talent pour remporter les
Madjani Stakes (Gr2 PA). Installé en tête de course, l’élève
de Marie-Christine Restes a contrôlé la course d’un bout à
l’autre. Pourtant, Deryan (Mahabb), qui effectuait ses dé-
buts sous l’entraînement de Majed Al Jahoori, semblait
faire un canter à l’entrée de la ligne droite. Mais Kerless del
Roc est reparti et Deryan a même dû céder la deuxième
place au bon finisseur Barakka (AF Al Buraq). Kerless del
Roc avait l’avantage d’avoir déjà couru cette saison, termi-
nant sixième de la préparatoire de la Sheikh Zayed bin Sul-
tan Al Nahyan Jewel Crown. Plus à l’aise sur le dirt, le repré-
sentant d’Al Ajban Stables devrait suivre un programme qui
le mènera logiquement vers une nouvelle tentative dans le
Kahayla Classic. En descendant de cheval, Fernando Jara a
déclaré : « Le plan a toujours été de bien partir et d’essayer
d’avoir une bonne position. Les chevaux comme lui, ça
rend notre travail facile. Ce n’est pas un sujet qui brille lors
de ses deux premières sorties : il monte en puissance au fil
de la saison. Même aujourd’hui, il n’était pas à 100 %. Cette
victoire va vraiment lui faire du bien en vue du reste de la
saison… Je pense qu’il va encore progresser en vue des
bonnes courses. »

RYSK TOUT, TOUT EN CONTRÔLE
The Prix de Sa Majesté le Roi Mohammed VI (Gr3 PA),
the main stay of the Moroccan International meeting,
enabled the French mare Rysk Tout (No Risk Al Mau-
ry) to obtain her definitive slice of black type. In doing
so, the Qatari Dhafi Al Marri representative, a creditable
third in the Sheikh Mansoor Festival – Liwa International
Stakes (Gr1 PA), opened her Moroccan PA Group race
account. In order to achieve this, the mare was required
to turn back the "French-bred" Ghasham (Dahess), the
defending champion, and one of the elite Moroccan PA
performers. The front-running Rysk Tout set the tempo
with her ears pricked, before surrendering the lead af-
ter the "French-bred" Rabbih Al Cham (Azadi) went to
the front some way out. However, travelling well within
herself, the mare drew upsides that rival before Maxime
Foulon applied maximum pressure. In the straight, the
Charles Gourdain charge had to contend with the cou-
rageous effort of Ghasham, who despite never flinching
the issue, was unable to put into question the superio-
rity of the winner. Marikani Fal (TM Fred Texas), coming
off a poor effort at Listed level on October 19 behind

Ghasham, was a clear third.

Épreuve reine du meeting international du Ma-
roc, le Grand Prix de Sa Majesté le Roi Mohammed
VI (Gr3 PA) a permis à la française Rysk Tout (No Risk
Al Maury) d’obtenir son black type majuscule. Notam-
ment troisième des Sheikh Mansoor Festival – Liwa In-
ternational Stakes (Gr1 PA) à La Teste-de-Buch, cette
représentante du Qatari Dhafi Al Marri a remporté son
premier Groupe au Maroc. Pour ce faire, elle a su tenir
en respect le "FR" Ghasham (Dahess), tenant du titre
et l’un des meilleurs pur-sang arabes du pays. Anima-
trice, Rysk Tout a galopé les oreilles bien pointées. Elle
a été attaquée tôt par le "FR" Rabbih Al Cham (Aza-
di). Mais, tout en contrôle, la jument est revenue à sa
hauteur avant d’être pleinement actionnée par Maxime
Foulon. Dans la ligne droite, la pensionnaire de Charles
Gourdain a dû se montrer courageuse face à Ghasham
qui n’a rien lâché, mais qui n’a finalement pu contester
sa supériorité. Marikani Fal (TM Fred Texas), qui res-
tait sur une contre-performance au niveau Listed, le 19
octobre, derrière Ghasham, s’est assuré une nette troi-
sième place.
Charles Gourdain remporte sa première course en
trois partants à l’occasion du meeting international du
Maroc. Il nous a confié : « Lors de sa dernière sortie,

"Rysk Tout delivered a below par effort on her last ou-
ting. Furthermore, the horses she was up against that day
were hard to beat. I'm not sure that she’s up to winning
a Gr1 PA race, despite being placed at that level. Today
the mare was pitched at the right level. I’m delighted
with her performance. Her owner hails from Qatar. His
name is Dhafi Al Marri and he’s passionate about horses.
He acquired the mare at the PA Sale which precedes the
Arc weekend. Rysk Tout ran very well in Riyadh in 2021,
and I think that her owner would be happy to see her run
there again."
THE SISTER OF A RUSSIAN CLASSIC WINNER
Bred by Jean-Claude Di Francesco, Rysk Tout twice went
through the ring at the Arqana PA Sales. In 2020, when
consigned by Yann Creff, she was knocked down to Sté-
phane Chazel for €14,000. A year later, and with the
consignor being Charles Gourdain, she was acquired for
€42,000 by Paul Nataf. She is a daughter of the Shadwell
sire No Risk Al Maury (Kesberoy) and Jeanne d'Arca (Orient
Express). The latter bears the "di Francesco" label in its en-
tirety, being a daughter of Orient Express (Manganate) and
Tell Arca (Tidjani). In addition to Rysk Tout, the same mare
has produced Sidi Jmour (Munjiz), a triple winner in Russia,
including the Sprint Stakes (Gr2 PA) and the local version
of the PA 2,000 Guineas (Gr2 PA). The grandam, Tell Arca
(Tidjani), was placed once at three in France. She’s the sister
of Pépé le Mocco (Djourman) – the winner of the Derby
des Pur-Sang Arabes (since upgraded to Gr1 PA status) on
only his second career outing. At Chantilly, he beat a stellar
cast which included Noreen (Dormane), Falina des Fabries
(Dormane) and Massamarie (Tidjani).

Rysk Tout n’a pas bien couru. Et les chevaux qu’elle
venait d’affronter étaient difficiles à battre. Je ne suis
pas certain qu’elle ait le niveau pour gagner un Gr1,
bien qu’elle en soit placée. Aujourd’hui, la jument était
dans une course de son niveau. Je suis ravi de sa per-
formance. Son propriétaire vient du Qatar. Il s’appelle
Dhafi Al Marri et est passionné de chevaux. Il a acquis
la jument lors des ventes d’arabes du week-end de
l’Arc, l’an dernier. En 2021, Rysk Tout a très bien couru
à Riyad et je pense que son propriétaire serait heureux
de la voir courir de nouveau là-bas. »
LA SŒUR D’UN GAGNANT CLASSIQUE EN RUSSIE
Élevée par Jean-Claude Di Francesco, Rysk tout
est passée deux fois à la vente de pur-sang arabes
d’Arqana. En 2020, alors présentée par Yann Creff, elle
a été achetée 14.000 € par Stéphane Chazel. Puis, pré-
sentée par Charles Gourdain en 2021, elle a été ache-
tée 42.000 € par Paul Nataf. C’est une fille de l’étalon
de Shadwell No Risk Al Maury (Kesberoy) et de Jeanne
d’Arca (Orient Express). Cette dernière est issue d’un
papier 100 % "di Francesco", étant par Orient Express
(Manganate) et Tell Arca (Tidjani). Outre Rysk Tout, elle
a donné Sidi Jmour (Munjiz), lauréat de trois courses en
Russie dont les Sprint Stakes et les 2.000 Guinées (Grs2
PA). La deuxième mère, Tell Arca (Tidjani), compte
une place à 3ans en France. C’est une sœur de Pépé

LE PREMIER GROUPE DU "FR" DJARABB DES FORGES

Seventh in this same race in 2018, and third in
2020, the 'French-bred' Djarabb des Forges (Sarrab)
finally added the Prix S.A.R. le Prince Héritier Moulay
El Hassan (Gr3 PA) to his CV. The 8-year-old, owned
and trained by Semlali Zakaria, has never been better,
and this was his second black-type win of the cam-
paign after taking the Med Zerktouni (L PA), at this
same course in July. Jockey Faddoul Abderrahim kept
Djarabb des Forges to the outside of the peloton,
and the combination were clearly travelling very cosi-
ly when drawing upsides the leaders down the back-
stretch. Cutting loose on the final bend, the winner
even found another gear when the French filly trained
by Élisabeth Bernard, Sultana (Af Al Buraq), laid down
the gauntlet to the winner. The pair were well clear of
the third Estiqbal Rm (Yakhlef).
In the aftermath, Zakaria Semlali, the winning trainer,
said: "The horse is an 8-year-old and so it's great that
he’s still going strong. Prior to this he was second in
a Listed PA race. We are delighted. He’s a graduate
of the Élevage des Forges academy. We brought him
here as 2-year-old, but his racing career only got under-
way at four. It wasn't easy for him at the beginning but
he has since showed his true mettle. I have been train-
ing for seven years. I started out with PA horses with
French bloodlines. Together with my son, I have my
own breeding operation." A winner at L PA level before

Septième en 2018, puis troisième en 2020, le "FR"
Djarabb des Forges (Sarrab) a pu enfin accrocher le Prix
S.A.R. le Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan (Gr3 PA) à
son tableau de chasse. À 8ans, le représentant et pen-
sionnaire de Semlali Zakaria n’a jamais été aussi fort
puisqu’il s’agit de son deuxième succès black type de
l’année après le Med Zerktouni (L PA), disputé sur cette
même piste, en juillet. Placé à flanc de peloton par son
jockey, Faddoul Abderrahim, Djarabb des Forges est
facilement arrivé sur la ligne des chevaux de tête à la
fin de la ligne d’en face. Il a fait la différence dans le
tournant et a été capable de bien se relancer dans la
phase finale, malgré l’attaque de la jument entraînée
en France par Élisabeth Bernard Sultana (Af Al Bu-
raq), troisième du Qatar Arabian Trophy des Juments
(Gr1 PA). À distance des deux premiers, Estiqbal Rm
(Yakhlef) s’empare de la troisième place.
Après la course, Zakaria Semlali, l’entraîneur du lauréat,
nous a confié : « Le cheval a 8ans, donc c’est top de
l’avoir encore aussi bien. Avant cela, il avait terminé
deuxième de Listed. Nous sommes ravis. Il est issu de
l’élevage des Forges. Nous l’avons amené ici quand il
avait 2ans mais il n’a débuté qu’à 4ans. Cela n’a pas
été simple pour lui au début mais, ensuite, il a montré
sa vraie valeur. Cela fait sept ans que je suis entraîneur.
J’ai commencé avec des souches françaises de pur-
sang arabes. Avec mon fils, j’ai mon propre élevage. »

following up in PA Group class, Djarabb des Forges has
bankrolled the equivalent of €136,713 in purses on the
domestic stage.
A GRANDSON OF DJARI DES FORGES
Bred by Catherine de Rober-Labarthe, and Stéphane
Dubois, Djarabb des Forges is a son of Sarrab (Tidjani)
and Djosera des Forges (Darike), herself a winner at Au-
rillac over 2,300m. She was deemed worthy of having a
crack at the French Arabian Breeders’ Cup Mile (Gr1 PA)
at Longchamp. In addition to Djarabb des Forges, she
has yielded another winner, Halib des Forges (Mahabb).
The latter won over a mile at Wolverhampton. The gran-
dam Djari des Forges (Chéri Bibi) scored a notable win in
the Critérium Arabe when beating the future stallion Bibi
de Carrère (Djourman). Djari des Forges is also the dam
of the quadruple winning Djarisa des Forges (Samsun),
whose successes comprised the Prix de l'Afac (a condi-
tions race and a Class 1 event at the time) and second in
L PA grade over 1,200m (6f) in the United Arab Emirates;
and the stallion Djarni des Forges (m. Tidjani), a winner
at Three of the Prix Val d’Adour at Tarbes, and placed
six times at three/four, including a second in the Prix du
Président des Émirats Arabes Unis à Chantilly (Gr.1 PA).

DAHLIL FAL GAINS ANOTHER PRESTIGIOUS WIN

UNE NOUVELLE VICTOIRE DE PRESTIGE POUR DAHLIL FAL

Already the winner of the Poule d’Essai des Pou-
lains des pur-sang arabes in early September, Dahlil Fal
(Dahor de Brugère) yet again showed that he is among
the best of his generation by winning the Prix de S.A.R.
le Prince Moulay Rachid (L PA). The colt accounted for
the hot favourite Marjana Atlas (Shart Al Khalidiah) and
the Gérald Mossé-ridden Jalil Grine (No Risk Al Maury).
Dahlil Fal is trained by Rhattas Bouchaib, who handles
a string of 70 PA horses on behalf of the Fal Stud, the
racing division of vet Azzedine Sedrati. His colours and
breeding operation shone brightly during Morocco’s
International Meeting which yielded four wins, three of
which were gained by English thoroughbreds on the Sa-
turday card.
Following Dahlil Fa’s return to the winning circle, Rhat-
tas Bouchaib said: "The horse was spot-on. I was real-
ly hoping that he would win today! Dahlil Fal was pre-
viously placed at Listed level. Now he is a Grand Prix
winner. I have been training the Fal Stud horses for a
year. I have 70 PA horses in my care."

Déjà lauréat de la Poule d’Essai des Poulains des
pur-sang arabes, début septembre, Dahlil Fal (Dahor
de Brugère) a de nouveau montré qu’il faisait partie
des meilleurs de sa génération en remportant le Prix de
S.A.R. le Prince Moulay Rachid (L PA). Le poulain a de-
vancé pour l’occasion la grande favorite, Marjana Atlas

associé à Gérald Mossé. Dahlil Fal est entraîné par
Rhattas Bouchaib, qui s’occupe d’un effectif de 70 che-
vaux pur-sang arabes pour Fal Stud, l’entité du vétéri-
naire Azzedine Sedrati. Sa casaque et son élevage se
sont particulièrement bien défendus lors du meeting
international du Maroc, avec quatre victoires dont trois
obtenues avec des pur-sang anglais, samedi.
Au retour de Dahlil Fa, Rhattas Bouchaib nous a dit :
« Le cheval était prêt. J’espérais vraiment qu’il s’impose
aujourd’hui ! Dahlil Fal s’était placé au niveau Listed.
Désormais il est gagnant d’un Grand Prix. Cela fait un
an que j’entraîne pour Fal Stud. Mon effectif est com-
posé de 70 chevaux pur-sang arabes. »

FLEUR DU SOLEIL ILLUMINE CASABLANCA

A few weeks after going through the ring at the
Arqana PA sale, Fleur du Soleil (Munjiz) was the sole
French-trained runner in the The President of the UAE
Cup (L PA). Carrying the colours of Yas Horse Racing Ma-
nagement at Casablanca for the second time, the filly
was coming off a courageous fifth in the Qatar Arabian
Trophy des Juments (for 4-year-old PA fillies) (Gr1  PA).
Tackling the dirt course at Casablanca-Anfa for the very
first time, Fleur du Soleil again displayed the same de-
gree of courage as in her previous race, which conse-
quently ushered-in her first listed win. Having initially
settled in mid-division, the Élisabeth Bernard runner
made headway, following a wide trip, which took her
to within striking distance of the leaders at the bu-
siness end. When called upon for maximum effort by
Jean-Bernard Eyquem, Fleur du Soleil dug deep and,
after reeling-in Asraa Oum Rabie (Asraa Min Albarq), she
accounted for that rival by her just over half a length.
Ridden by Gérald Mossé, Ajdal de Grine (Af Albahar)
was a creditable third.
Élisabeth Bernard exuded happiness when Fleur du So-
leil returned to the winner's circle and she said: "I’m so
happy! She's a magnificent filly and she is so sweet na-
tured. I ride her every morning. Of course, going into
the race, her form spoke for itself but we harboured
doubts about her handling the track, in bad condition
and even more watered than the day before. She put
her heart and soul into the race. Fleur du Soleil should
become a superb broodmare prospect as she’s brave
and strong. I don't think that she will be staying long in

Quelques semaines seulement après son passage
en vente chez Arqana, Fleur du Soleil (Munjiz) était la
seule française d’entraînement au départ de ce Prix
The President of the UAE Cup (L PA). À Casablanca,
elle portait les couleurs de Yas Horse Racing Mana-
gement pour la deuxième fois, elle qui restait sur une
courageuse cinquième place obtenue dans le Qatar
Arabian Trophy des Juments (Gr1 PA). Sur la piste en
sable de Casablanca-Anfa, une surface qu’elle décou-
vrait, Fleur du Soleil a fait preuve d’autant de courage
que lors de son dernier parcours, ce qui lui a permis

vue au centre du peloton, la pensionnaire d’Élisabeth
Bernard a gagné des rangs en épaisseur, se retrouvant
proche des chevaux de tête pour rentrer dans la phase
finale. Une fois actionnée par Jean-Bernard Eyquem,
Fleur du Soleil a mis son cœur sur la piste, parvenant
à remonter Asraa Oum Rabie (Asraa Min Albarq) avant

this year’s Arqana PA Sale where she was acquired for
€300,000 by Pegasus Bloodstock. She’s a daughter of
Munjiz (Kesberoy) and Theeba (Amer), the Hatta Inter-
national Stakes (Gr1 PA) third, and also the dam of the
Qatar International Cup (Gr1 PA) winner Methgal (TM
Fred Texas). The grandam is the much heralded Mas-
samarie (Tidjani), and herself the source of four Gr1 PA
winners, including the outstanding talent Ebraz (Amer),
who gained 18 career wins.

The winner of the Mazrat Al Ruwayah (Gr2 PA) over a
mile in February, Af Alajaj (Af Albahar) made his return
to competition in the Bani Yas (Gr2 PA) on November
11 ... following a 230 day break. Given that it was run
th
over 1,400m on the dirt course at Meydan, the race was
inevitably run at a strong pace from the get-go. Tadhg
O'Shea, who knows the United Arab Emirates circuit
like the back of his hand, ensured that Khalid Khalifa Al
Nabooda representative had a good run after combi-
nation initially hugged the inside rail. In touch with the
leaders on the turn, the winner lined up the ex-Shadwell
runner Nadelshiba (Majd Al Arab), who got first run on
what was his initial attempt at PA Group level. However,
after coming under pressure and digging deep, Af Alajaj
came up with the goods after nailing the win by a len-
gth. The French-born Nadelshiba was second. "French-
breds" filled all three places on the podium, as Héros de
Lagarde (Af Albahar), who was just over three lengths
further away in third, completed the sweep. He also ca-
pitalised to pick up some black type in this race. Ernst
Oertel, the winning trainer, said: "This is a very good
horse. He will develop into a genuine Gr1 PA performer.
We also have AF Alwajel (Af Al Buraq) – second in the
2021 Dubai Kahayla Classic – in the yard. So that's two
good horses for the season. Fingers crossed that is..."
Lauréat du Mazrat Al Ruwayah (Gr2 PA) sur le mile
au mois de février, Af Alajaj (Af Albahar) effectuait son
retour en compétition le 11 novembre, à l'occasion
du Bani Yas (Gr2 PA)... avec 230 jours de pause. Sur
les 1.400m de la piste en dirt de Meydan, la course
a forcément eu beaucoup de rythme dès le départ.
Mais Tadhg O'Shea, qui connaît les Émirats comme sa
poche, a donné une bonne course près du rail intérieur
à l'élève et représentant de Khalid Khalifa Al Nabooda.
Au contact des leaders dans le tournant, il est venu
chercher l'ex-Shadwell Nadelshiba (Majd Al Arab), le-
quel avait attaqué le premier pour son premier essai au
niveau Groupe. Il a cependant fallu lutter, et sous les
sollicitations, Af Alajaj a créé la différence pour s'impo-
ser d'une longueur. Le français de naissance Nadelshi-
ba est deuxième. C'est un troisième "FR" qui complète
le podium, car Héros de Lagarde (Af Albahar) se classe
troisième à un peu plus de trois longueurs. Il en profite
pour décrocher du caractère gras. Ernst Oertel, l’entraî-
neur du gagnant, a déclaré : « C’est un très bon cheval.
Il va devenir un vrai sujet de Gr1. Nous avons aussi
AF Alwajel (Af Al Buraq) – deuxième de la Dubai
Kahayla Classic 2021 – de retour à l’écurie. Cela
fait donc deux bons chevaux pour cette saison.

THE BROTHER OF JAMAAYIL LE FRÈRE DE JAMAAYIL

Af Alajaj is a son of Af Albahar (Amer), a stallion based
at the Haras de Thouars, and two of his progeny achie-
ved podium finishes in the Gr2 PA feature. The dam
Hathrah (Makzan) was unraced. She has produced
Jamaayil (Al Jakbar), the French Arabian Breeders Sprint
(Gr2 PA) winner, and Awzaan (Al Saoudi). The latter an-
nexed The Royal Cavalry of Oman Clarendon Stakes
(Gr3 PA), in addition to filling third in the H.H. Sheikh
Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup (Gr1 PA) at Sandown.
The grandam, Ester du Paon (Chéri Bibi), won in Britain.
She is also responsible for generating Jiyush (Manga-
nate), the Dubai Stakes (Gr1 PA) winner, and Awzaan
(Al Saoudi), who was third in the Sheikh Zayed Sultan Al
Nahyan Cup (Gr1 PA). The great grandam is none other
than the much heralded Berthe (Irmak).
