pursuit of a superb experience for teams and fans.
A record 600,000 fans from more than 100
nations will be travelling to France during the
tournament anticipating what could be the most
competitive edition to date. Never has the top of the
World Rugby Men’s Rankings powered by Capgemini
been so competitive, while we are also welcoming
Chile as debutants, ensuring three South American
teams for the first time.
Never before has a host nation been so excited
or ready to host. More than 90 per cent of the
population favour France’s hosting while more
than 75 per cent of the population intend to engage
with the tournament as match or Rugby Village
attendees or through broadcast and digital. This is
unprecedented.
Rugby World Cup also plays a much wider role
in the development of the sport. The strength
of the Rugby World Cup brand and commercial
programme is enabling World Rugby to invest
£575 million at all levels of the game across its
132 member unions between 2020 and 2023.
Significantly, this investment includes a £42 million
investment in the preparation of emerging nations
teams for RWC 2023.

DEAR MEMBERS
OF THE MEDIA
After months of preparation, the time has
finally come for Rugby World Cup 2023 to
kick-off. While we do not know which of the
20 competing teams will lift the Webb Ellis
Cup on 28 October, we are certain they will
all give their best on the pitch and provide us
with incredible thrills. From an unexpected
win by an underdog to a surprising loss by a
favourite, a Rugby World Cup always come
down to raw emotion.
Your presence in France for the coming weeks
will mean hundreds of millions of fans around
the world will have the opportunity to follow
and, in a way, participate in this event. You
will tell the stories and share the images that
will make this Rugby World Cup unique and
exceptional.
Our ambition is to make this Rugby World
Cup a shared celebration, one which will give
rugby fans the kind of emotions that only
rugby’s greatest stage can create. Equally as
important to us is our ambition to organise a
responsible and sustainable tournament, which
we hope will inspire future local organising
committees.
We are thrilled to have you onboard with
us for the coming weeks, together let’s make
Rugby World Cup 2023 an unforgettable Jacques Rivoal
moment!
