Exercise 5, p. 24 a) Analyse the words with negative prefixes and comment on their origin.
1. Eisenstein's appetite for experience was insatiable (I. Montagu). Ейнштейнова жага досвіду була невгамовною.
Insatiable - prefix in- "not, opposite of", incapable of being satisfied or appeased; inordinately greedy," early 15c.,
insaciable, from Old French or directly from Latin
2. There was so much he couldn't understand! So much he'd miscalculated, misread. He'd been outmaneuvered at every
important juncture (R. Ludlum). Багато чого він не зміг зрозуміти! Наскільки сильно він прорахувався, неправильно

Miscalculated – prefix mis- (1) "badly, wrongly,- make a wrong estimate of, 1560, from Latin
Misread – prefix 1714, "read wrongly, mistake the sense or significance of," from mis- (1) "badly, wrongly" + read (v.).
Middle English misreden (c. 1200) meant "give bad or false advice.
3. He was not going to make me independent while I insisted on going in for misguided fooleries (C.P. Snow). Він не

Unimaginable - not imaginable or comprehensible; un - prefix of negation, meaning “not”, from Old English - from Proto-

Disapproval - the feeling of having a negative opinion of someone or something; prefix dis- is a Latin ( also later Old

figuratively, "hard-hearted"), from assimilated form of in- "not, opposite of"

Abnormally - prefix "not conformed or conforming to rule, deviating from a type or standard, contrary to system or law,

Exercise 6 (1-10 sent.), p.25 a) Pick out the words with the suffixes 1) -er (-or) and 2) -ish. Comment on their
meaning.
1. He had been a dish-washer, car-cleaner, plumber's helper and several other things before finally, in Buffalo, he had
been inducted into the hotel business (Th. Dreiser).
