In the left-hand diagram let L be a straight line in C making an angle φ


with the real axis, and let d be its distance from the origin. Let z be any
point on L.

∠OXP = φ and since OP ⊥ L then ∠Y OP = φ


If we now rotate C clockwise through φ then the line L is now parallel to
the X-axis at a distance d below it, as in the right-hand diagram.
Generally, any point z on L in the left-hand diagram will now lie on the line
L in the right-hand diagram. Using the hint given in the exercise, we
multiply z by e−iφ to rotate it clockwise through φ. Since every point z on
the transformed line is at a distance d from the X-axis it follows that:

d = Im[e−iφ z]
