Book Discussion Report

A Wrinkle in Time
By Madeleine L’Engle
20th May, 2022
Today was our second round of discussion on the book A Wrinkle in Time by
Madeleine L’Engle.
We started with the plot of the story. The book is about a girl named Meg, her
little brother Charles Wallace and their friend, Calvin O’Keefe with three
extraordinary women – Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which. They all went
to an adventure through time and space to save Meg and Charles’s father.
Arunabh sir explained the situation at the beginning of the book where Meg’s
father has disappeared for a long time and no one knows where he is. Meg is a
bully at school and she is living in a trauma. We learned the meaning of
‘trauma’. It means very depressing and sad experience in the past. Meg’s mind
got stuck in the situation where she didn’t know about her father being alive or
dead so she couldn’t focus on anything else.
Then, we discussed about the character of Calvin O’Keefe. He is good-looking
and a sweet talker. Sir told us about one of Shakespeare’s play- Macbeth. In
this play, there are three witches, who know and predict the future. Sir
referred the witches to the three women in the book.
Further in the story discussion took place about the planets they all visited.
First, they went to Uriel, and then to Camazotz, then to Ixchel, then again to
Camazotz and back to Earth.
At first when they went to Camazotz from Uriel, they found their father but
Charles got trapped by IT. When IT was trying to capture Meg and Calvin too,
Meg’s father took them to Ixchel leaving Charles Wallace behind. Meg was
determined to not to give up on Charles Wallace. They went back where she
understood that there is something that she has but IT doesn’t and that was
love. She saved Charles Wallace and they went back to earth with everyone
safe.
We also discussed the character of Charles Wallace Murry. He is a four-year old
boy with extremely high IQ. He always tries to calm Meg when she is angry and
he always know what is going on in Meg or her mother’s mind. He is a cute
boy. He doesn’t speak much in public but he is very kind-hearted and loves his
family.
At the end of the session, Sir explained us how to write the book review.
