Spotting and Identifying Business Opportunities

Background Information:
Spotting business opportunities is one of the most essential aspects of entrepreneurship. An
entrepreneur must have a keen eye for identifying opportunities that can potentially turn into a good
product or business venture. At the same time, an entrepreneur should also know which opportunities to
drop and which one to develop.
The first step in identifying a good business opportunity is called idea generation phase
(SERDEF, 2007) through different sources or means. Most importantly, idea generation is attained
through the process of environmental scanning in which the entrepreneur makes careful observations to
identify the problems and needs that currently exist as well as the changes in the environment that lead to
new problems and new needs.

Directions:
Provide answers or information about the given sources of business opportunities that
you could consider in business planning:
I. Environmental scanning
a. From what you have observed in your own community, list down five (5)
existing businesses that you consider efficient, smart and profitable. Focus on
the types of businesses that are most interesting or appealing to you.
