DNA Replication Drawing Activity

The document provides instructions for drawing out the steps of DNA replication in 5 boxes. Students are asked to draw: 1) the original DNA double helix strands, 2) helicase beginning to unwind the DNA at the replication fork, 3) DNA polymerase adding complementary bases to form the leading strand, 4) DNA polymerase adding Okazaki fragments in fragments to form the lagging strand which are joined by DNA ligase, and 5) the formation of two DNA double helices showing semiconservative replication. Students are provided a key to use different colors for the original, leading, and lagging strands and are asked to label all bold words and indicate 5' and 3' ends with direction arrows.

Activity 3.4
DNA Replication
You will draw out the steps of DNA replication. In each box, draw the event described. You will use 3 different colors: one for the original strands
of DNA, one for the leading strand, and one for the lagging strand. You must label all the bold words in each drawing and indicate the 5’ and 3’
ends of each strand with direction arrows. Use the drawing on the back to help you.

1. Draw the DNA double 2. Helicase () begins to 3. DNA polymerase adds 4. DNA polymerase adds 5. Two DNA double helices
helix, with the sequence on unwind the DNA at the complementary bases in the complementary bases are formed, showing
the 5’ to 3’ strand: replication fork. 5’ to 3’ direction to form discontinuously in the 5’ to semiconservative

S Phase: Replication Fork
On the following drawing, label the directions (5’ and 3’) on both strands. Also label: leading strand, lagging
strand, Okazaki fragments, replication fork, and DNA polymerase.
