Hollow slabs/floor

Two types of hollow floors:

• Terracotta floor
• Castone floor

Advantages:
• It has a lighter self-weight than solid concrete slab and so suitable where load is an issue.
• The hollow of the clay pots are ready routes/ passage for services pipes and cables.
• There is ease of construction, especially when all beams are hidden beams.
• It is economical for spans more than 5metre with moderate live load such as hospitals, office and residential
buildings.
• There is also improved insulation for sound and heat. It has this advantage of temperature control and sound
damping over the solid slab.

Disadvantages:
• If not properly handled, the hollow core ribbed slab units may be damaged during transport.
• It becomes difficult to produce satisfactory connections between the precast members.
• It is necessary to arrange for special equipment for lifting and moving of the precast units.
• Not economic for small spans.
• Difficult to repair and strengthen.

Hollow slab

A hollow core slab refers to a precast slab that is prepared using prestressed concrete. It is generally used in the
construction of floors for high-rise apartments or multi- storey buildings.
One of the most important and highly beneficial developments in the construction industry is the pre-stressed or
precast hollow core slab. It is the best solution for the current market demands related to the modern housing needs.
They consume lesser raw material and possess higher concrete strength, are structurally efficient, have reduced
thickness; and also offer the possibility for reuse and recycling.
These hollow core units are commonly used in structures with larger spans or loadings that include:
Schools, Commercial outlets, Industrial units, Hospitals, Office buildings, Sports complexes, Entertainment centers,
Hotels, etc.
Terracotta floor
Terracotta units, also known as
clay blocks or terracotta hollow
blocks, are an eco-friendly and
energy-efficient construction
material. They can be used in
hollow slab construction to
create lightweight, durable, and
thermally efficient structures.

Cast stone or reconstructed stone is a highly refined building

material, a form of precast concrete used as masonry
intended to simulate natural-cut stone.
