Concepts of LAN, MAN, WAN.

 LAN-
 LAN stands for Local Area Network.
 LAN’s ownership is private.
 The transmission speed of a LAN is high.
 Network propagation delay is short in LAN.
 There is less congestion in LAN.
 LAN’s design and maintenance is easy.
 There is more fault tolerance in LAN.
 LAN is used for small ranges such as 1-5 km, in offices,
schools, small industries or cluster of buildings.
 With a LAN, you can get higher speeds of data transfer
with 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet (high speed).
 LAN can use any type of network topology which
meets the need of the network such as a ring or bus
for the interconnection of the host in LAN networks.
 MAN-
 MAN stand for Metropolitan Area Network.
 MAN’s ownership can be private or public.
 While the transmission speed of a MAN is average.
 There is a moderate propagation delay in a MAN.
 While there is more congestion in MAN.
 While MAN’s design and maintenance is difficult than
LAN.
 While there is less fault tolerance.
 MAN is used for communication between large geographical
areas such as cities, districts. Private firms
use MAN networks for inter connectivity between their
offices.
 With a MAN, you can get speeds of data transfer up to
100 Mbps.
 MAN networks work on either ring or bus topology with
a protection link, thus data can be transmitted or received
simultaneously over nodes and if one link fails the other will
keep the network live.
 WAN-
 WAN stands for wide area network.
 WAN’s ownership can be private or public.
 Whereas the transmission speed of a WAN is low.
 Whereas, there is a long propagation delay in a WAN.
 There is more congestion than MAN in WAN.
 Whereas WAN’s design and maintenance is also
difficult than LAN as well MAN.
 While there is less fault tolerance.
 WAN covers bigger areas ranging from 100 to several
1000 km, such as state to state or countries Military
operations, railway reservation, airlines use WAN
networks.
 With a WAN, you can get lower speeds of data transfer
of 10-20 Mbps.

 The WAN network also works in master-slave scenario

and main and protection link topology.
