Educational Psychology is the study of how people learn and retain new
information with the development of techniques and strategy in teaching which will cater
to the diverse kinds of learners. It deals with the study of personality, cognitive, and
social which is very helpful in understanding on how to make the students learn based
on their interests. Psychology is the science of mental health, on the other hand, if the
science of psychology interplays with the art of teaching, it is called Educational
Psychology. Several experimentations and investigations has been conducted to
understand the perceptions, intelligence, personality, cognition, and motivation. The
efforts to understand human nature already began a long time ago with Hippocrates,
Plato, Aristotle, Lao Tzu, and Confucius.
Some of the theories about the human behavior are as follows; Marcus Fabius
Quintillanus emphasized the bad effects of corporal punishment in school; John Amos
Comenius emphasized the individual differences; John Locke imposed that learners has
natural interests; Jean Jacques Rousseau believed that child’s interests should be the
guiding principle in the learning process; Ivan Pavlov introduced that classical
conditioning refers to the idea that behaviors can be understood beyond the stimulus
and response; Edward Thorndike introduced the Theory of Connectionism; and Jean
Piaget described the cognitive development of the children. All these theories contribute
in understanding the learner’s attitudes, developmental level, interests, and motivation.
Learners are the most important figures in the system of education and the reason why
educational system exists. That is why there is a continuous study or research about
dealing with the human behavior that will enable the teacher understand their students
and to improve the performance of the learners in a classroom. Learning is a natural
process that already occurs inside the learner and is activated by the learner. It also
deals with the exploration of ideas, a consequence of experience, a cooperative and
collaborative process, and evolutionary process. It also means that learning is
sometimes accompanied by difficulty and discomfort. Each learner has an accumulation
of ideas, feelings, and attitudes, and the process is also emotional and intellectual, and
the learner’s ability to solve problem is unique. The personality of the learner has also a
great deal in the learning process. It helps educator comprehend the process on how to
get along with the students to make them learn through motivations and interest.
Therefore, educators always deal with the behavior of the students which will
enable them to conduct an activity based on the child’s interests during a learning
process. Teachers can also make use of the teaching strategies and techniques to
make the learning process meaningful and relevant. Some of the theories about the
human behavior can also be interpreted by the teacher and relate during class
discussions. And the main focus of educational psychology is to make the students
learn new concepts with the arts of teaching on which the learners can relate on.
