EXPERIMENT NO.

1
TO OBSERVE LAMINAR, TRANSITIONAL, TURBULENT PIPE FLOW BY CALCULATING
REYNOLD’S NO. FOR EACH REGIME.
APPARATUS:

 F1 10 hydraulic bench
 Measuring cylinder
 Stopwatch
 Thermometer
 F1 20 Reynold’s demonstration apparatus
EQUIPMENT/ APPARATUS DESCRIPTION:
F1-10 Hydraulic bench: it is a self-contained water supply device. It recirculates water from a
Sump tank into different hydraulic devices to conduct various experiments.
Measuring Cylinder: to measure the flow rate of water through the pipe
F1-20 Reynold’s demonstration apparatus: a vertical head tank is present at the top in which
water is constantly entered through the glass pipe. The tank is filled with marbles (stilling
media) that tranquilize the flow of water. A control valve is present at the discharge end that
regulates the flow through the pipe. The fluid flow (transition from laminar to turbulent flow)
can be observed by the flow velocity. Therefore, Reynold’s number is calculated by the flow
velocity of the water. A dye reservoir is installed at the top of the tank. A blue dye is injected
into the water through the dye reservoir which allows observing the flow conditions.
