Persuasive

Techniques
Do Now: In your notebooks….
• Write about a time you convinced
someone to do something or buy
something or believe something? What
was it? How did you convince them? Do
you think you are good at convincing
people?
What do all these pictures have in common?
PROPAGANDA:
TECHNIQUES USED TO
INFLUENCE OPINIONS,
EMOTIONS, ATTITUDES OR
BEHAVIOR
What is persuasion?
■Generally an
appeal to emotion,
not intellect.

■An attempt to
change your behavior

■ It attempts to “guide
your choice”
Who uses propaganda?

• Military
• Media
• Advertisers
• Politicians
•You and I!!!

Ba ndwa gon Technique

It is a psychological
phenomenon whereby the rate of
uptake of beliefs, ideas, fads and
trends increases with respect to
the proportion of others who
have already done so.
Ba ndwa gon Technique

The advertiser tries to make

you feel like everyone else
has the product and if you
don't have it too, you'll be left
out.
Ba ndwa gon
Technique

• Everyone is doing it!

You should too!!!
Testimonial
When some respected celebrity
(or alternatively someone
generally hated) claims that an
idea or product is good (or bad).
This technique is used to convince
us without examining the facts more
carefully.
Testimonial
• Testimonials are
quotations or
endorsements which
connect a famous or
respectable person with
a product or item.
Loaded Word
Loaded words reflect the
speaker`s/writer`s deliberate and
purposeful choice of vocabulary
with which they want to persuade
an audience or to manipulate the
audience`s action towards their
goal.
Loaded language
Loaded language should come with the warning,
“Handle with Care.” This term refers to words
and phrases that induce a strong emotional
response and carry a positive or negative
connotation beyond their literal meaning. Some
examples include bureaucrat vs. public servant,
illegal immigrant vs. asylum seeker, militant vs.
freedom fighter, vigilante vs. protestor, and
unborn child vs. fetus. The terms pro-life and
pro-choice are also examples of loaded language
that try to present each side in the abortion
debate in a positive framework.
Loaded Word
• Use
“loaded”
words like .
. .
– new
– improved
– best
Statistics
This is similar to Card-Stacking in
terms of the use of facts. Often a
good way to sell a product is to
include statistics (or specific
numbers) about the effectiveness of
the product or about the number of
people using the product.
Statistics
Telling one side
of the story as
though there is
no opposing
views

Notice that there is no mention of calories

or the fact that there are no vitamins
Statistics
“Four out of five dentists
recommend sugarless gum for
their patients who chew gum”

When the statistics are based on a falsehood.

Name Callingor Stereotyping
Name-calling is a form of argument in
which insulting or demeaning labels are
directed at an individual or group. This
phenomenon is studied by a variety of
academic disciplines such as
anthropology, child psychology, and
political science. It is also studied by
rhetoricians, and a variety of other
disciplines.
Name Callingor Stereotyping

Giving a person or an idea a bad label

by using an easy to remember
pejorative name. This is used to make
us reject and condemn a person or idea
without examining what the label really
means. Examples: "Republican",
"Tree-Hugger", "Nazi",
"Environmentalist", "Special-Interest
Group".
Name Calling or Stereotyping
➢Smears or damages an opponent
➢Often used by politicians

In a campaign speech
to a logging company,
the Congressman
referred to his
environmentally
conscious opponent
as a "tree hugger."
Snob Appeal
• aims to flatter The ultimate driving machine
Lexus sports car
•Makes insinuation
that this product is
better than others.

•“avant garde”
ahead of the times.
Snob Appeal
The opposite of the bandwagon
technique, snob appeal makes
the case that using the product
means the consumer is
better/smarter/richer than
everyone else.

Plain Folks
This is a way that a speaker convinces an
audience that an idea is good because they
are the same ideas of the vast majority of
people like yourself. Examples: "This is the
will of the People", "Most
Americans...". Another example would be
when the speaker tells a story about a family
or people that are "just like you" to reinforce
the speaker's point of view.

Plain Folks
Makes the leaders look like
Plain folks (mom and pop
style).
- a convincing method to
show they are just
common people.
- Opposite of snob appeal
Plain Folks
Transfer
This is a technique of projecting
positive or negative qualities (praise
or blame) of a person, entity, object,
or value (an individual, group,
organization, nation, patriotism, etc.)
to another in order to make the
second more acceptable or to
discredit it.
Transfer
-Feelings (good or bad)
are transferred to something else.

Transfer tries to make you

view something in the same
way as they view something
else.

In the Kerry vs. Bush campaign, an

internet email circulated showing
similar physical characteristics
between John Kerry and a
Frankenstein monster.
