Roles in the Family and Family Culture

One of the most important agents of socialization and a person's life is their family. Our first teacher is our family.
This is where we learned our lessons, culture, traditions, and values, all of which have influenced who we are today. Their
participation is crucial since they have the most influence over our social identities and perspectives.

In my case, each generation in my family have different roles. My great-grandparents role were to provide a link with
the past and make sense of the family’s history. Their role was also to teach and show to my grandparents the culture my
great-grandparents have inherited from their previous generations. In short, they ensure the role of continuing the family’s
history as well as culture and tradition. The role of my grandparents from both sides, is also similar to my great-
grandparents. Her role back when she was still living was also to nurture us, her grandchildren. She was strict to other
people but towards us, she was very caring. Just like my paternal grandparents, their role was to let us, the younger
generations be familiar with our roots, culture and history. They provide us insights on what was not accepted in the past
buts is now accepted. All of my great-grandparents and grandparents role was to be our mirror of the past. But, my parents
have their own specific roles. My father is the one that protects and supports the family financially. On the other hand, my
mother has the duty of taking care of our daily needs, household chores, and budgeting the money given by my father in
order to have enough necessities. However, all their roles has only one goal. That is, to provide us, their children, with the
support, encouragement, and resources that will enable us to grow and develop. My parents are my backbone. They have
provided me with everything I needed so that when I face the wide world, I are equipped with the knowledge and attitude
to conquer it. They are ones who guide us in life, and they have a great influence in our behavior. Parents are their
children’s first teachers and should remain their best teachers throughout life.

All in all, each family has their own cultures and traditions which help shape their members’ values, attitudes and
behaviors. These unique culture and traditions sets us apart from other, which helps add a sense of identity in us. That is
also why it is important to know our family roots. In my family the thing they mold more was to learn to respect my
elders. Learn to say ‘po’ and always ‘manno’ to my elders. Always have a smile on the face when talking to them and be
caring. Another is that never to insert in olders conversation right or wrong I must stay quiet and listen to them. Because it
shows disrespect. My grandmother have so many things she taught me. First is to always respect my parents dispite their
behavior towards me. Never to walk over a food. Don’t hand over a food in the window. Never leave a deep sigh in front
of the table. This one, my father is so strict about it. Since he is the one working for our food. For him it is a disrespect
and shows inhumane behavior. In our family, my fathers rule are absolute and always should be seconded by my mother.
While I am left to follow. I should not disobey since I am only their child. They are always right and I don’t have the right
to correct them.

EMERGING NORMS/PATTERNS OF BEHAVIOR of Filipinos. You should analyze the nature of these emerging norms
and the rules governing such behaviors.

NEW NORMAL: Emerging Norms and Patterns of Behavior in Filipinos

There is just one constant in life: change. Change is unavoidable and an inherent component of society, whether it is
planned or unexpected, gradual or sudden. Every society has its own set of values, customs, and practices. These
standards and patterns of behavior, on the other hand, will not always be stable. Emerging norms will eventually take the
place of current norms.. The outbreak of the COVID-19 virus has caused an unparalleled transformation in our way of life
in the Philippines and around the world over the past year. As a result, things that we once believed were simple have
become difficult. As a result, the pandemic had produced a "New Normal" in order to ensure people's safety. During the
‘New Normal,' Filipinos witnessed a slew of new nodes emerge. Some of them includes:
 Staying at home and never leaving if not necessary.
 Work is done at home and schools are done in flexible learning or e-learning.
 Follow social distancing when going outside.
 Frequently wash and sanitize hands.
 Wearing face masks and face shields when going outside.
 No Face Mask, No Entry on establishments and institutions.
 Everything now is about queuing.
 Avoid physical contact with others when you greet or meet them.
 Regular schedule for disinfecting house, school, and other establishments.
 Routinely clean and disinfect yourself and surrounding areas/surfaces.
 Less dining out to avoid physical contact.
 Have a healthy life style and taking more vitamin C.
 If you have the same symptoms as the virus, you should first self-quarantine at your home and if symptoms
persist go to the nearest hospital.

The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically altered our way of life. These shifts occurred frequently and suddenly.
There were some changes that needed to be addressed, particularly in the Filipino community. That is why the so-called
"new normal" was instituted. The community must adhere to the Norms and Patterns of Behavior in this "New Normal.".
The norms emerge in light of the need to lessen the transmission of the virus, so that we can go back to the way life used
to be. Its very nature is to ensure the public’s safety and mitigate risks brought by the pandemic. Wearing face mask and
face shield is under the health protocols implemented by the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) of the Philippines. The
Department of Health (DOH) have also made Covid-19 policies regarding how public and private sectors should act.
Though not every Filipino has been infected with the virus, we have learned the consequences of breaking these
commandments indirectly. Apart from the formal norms and protocols, one rule that guided our actions was that we did
not want to be infected by the virus. We've read reports on the virus's impact on those who are infected; some people have
it worse than others, and some people die. As a result, we don't wish for these to happen to us and our loved ones,
governing us to behave according to the emerging norms. Nevertheless, we cannot dispute the fact that some Filipinos
disregard these emerging norms. They were not able to adjust to these norms. Some have continue to meet with their
friends and other relatives making physical contact and not following social distancing, which is very risky as
transmission can happen fast in these situations. Preventing COVID-19 transmission is contingent on public compliance
and private sector cooperation to lessen the transmission of the virus. Henceforth, the Filipinos cooperation is very
important. We Filipinos should maintain and behave according to these emerging norms if we don’t want to get affected
by the virus, transmit it to others, and if we want this pandemic to end. Whatever happens, we must change our behavior,
adhere to the emerging norms, and adapt in this critical time if we hope to minimize the impact of the pandemic without
introducing draconian measures.
