An Informative Summary
The National Living Treasures Award or “Gawad Manlilikha ng Bayan” was institutionalized
under the public act 7355 in April year 1992. Since the inception of “National Living Treasures
Award” it has been bestowed a total of 13 traditional artists.
According to the statement of Felipe de Leon, Jr., we have a very reach tradition of people’s
art and this is really a source of identity for us, Filipinos. He also expressed that the traditional
artists sometimes are called cut people, who are the bearers of the Filipino soul.
The following are the first batch of the exemplified Filipino artists who are also a Gamaba
awardee whom unfortunately have passed away. In spite of that, we are lucky that there are some
footages left that showcases their voices, thoughts, and their masterpieces through the archival
recordings of Susan Calo-Medina.
2. Masino Intaray- was a musician and a storyteller from Brookes point, Palawan.
His most known poem was entitled Kalila and he played an
instrument called Basal as he sings accompanied by a gimbal

3. Ginaw Bilog- was poet from Hanunuo Mangyan Panaytayan, Oriental Mindoro.
He preserved crafts by using surat mingon or the baybayin.
He grew up listening to a poetry called the Ampahan which
is used in his community to express love, traditional
wisdom, sage, and advice. He was awarded the Gamaba
in1993 and dies in 2013.
4. Lang Dulay- was a textile-weaver from T’boli Lake sebu, South Cotabato. She
was the first ever T’boli to be awarded the gamaba award
she has processed abaca fibers and weaved them into tinalak
cloth. She had stablished a big school for weavers and
gained a lot of students and followers. She was awarded the
Gamaba award in 1998 and passed away in 2015.
5. Salinta Monon- was also a textile-weaver originated from Tagabawa Bagogo Bansalan, Davao
Del Sur. She specialized in the complex small-scaled Ikat technique. She
happened to be a past friend of Lang Dulay, and they met together at the
gamaba awarding ceremony. She was prefers to work and weave alone in her
house as she is a very introspective type of person. She was bestowed with
the Gamaba award in 1998 and passed away in 2009.
7. Darhata Sawabi- was a textile-weaver from Tausog Parang, Sulu. She was
perhaps the last master of the jewel of Philippine textile. She
attained financial stability via weaving of Pis syabit a woven
square 39 by 40 inches which took her 3 months to finish
and sells it for 2,000 pesos. She was awarded the Gamaba
award in 2004 and died in 2005 before the award was coffered.
