INTRODUCTION

It’s good to be physically fit and healthy! Let’s put away stressors in our lives.
Strive to be active daily. There are different kind of dances around the world but this
module focuses about modern and contemporary dance.
Many dance competitions throughout the nation judge dancers on their modern
dancing ability and dancers take this opportunity to use their dancing to express their
innermost emotions and get closer to their inner-selves. Watching a modern dancer
can sometimes become emotional, especially if the dancer is trying to convey a
series of sad emotions, such as death or grief.
Better to engage in physical fitness through modern and contemporary dance,
however, we must also look back at the five components of physical fitness. Often
used in our school systems, health clubs and fitness centers to gauge how good a
shape we are truly in. The five components that make up total fitness are:
cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility and
body composition.

Modern dance is often considered to have emerged as a rejection of or

rebellion against, classical ballet…. In the late 19 th century, dance artists such as
Isadora Duncan, Maud Allan and Loie Fuller were pioneering new forms and
practices in what is now called aesthetic of free dance for performance.
Now, we must be open minded to this module and believe in yourself that you
can be creative as you make your dance moves!

Now, you are learning the beauty of dance. It is truly enjoyable to perform
different types of dances but first and foremost you must be physically fit. Do you still
remember the components of fitness? These are the components of physical fitness;
cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and
body composition.
Bear it in mind the safety measures in physical activity. It’s good to review the
important things or lessons so that it will sharpen your thinking skills and helps avoid
unwanted injuries during performance. Learning the basic techniques is also key to
be a good performer or dance artist. You’ve seen on television that dancers have all
the qualities of Health-Related Fitness (HRF). Our very own, Mr. Pure Energy Gary
Valenciano he became famous because of his talent in dancing.

Modern and Contemporary dance

10
Modern dance is a broad genre of western concert or theatrical dance,
primarily arising out of Germany and the United States in the late 19th and early 20th
centuries.

Modern dance is often considered to have emerged as a rejection of or

rebellion against, classical ballet. Socioeconomic and cultural factors also
contributed to its development. In the late 19th century, dance artists such as Isadora
Duncan, Maud Allan and Loie Fuller were pioneering new forms and practices in
what is now called aesthetic or free dance for performance. These dancers
disregarded ballet’s strict movement vocabulary, the particular, limited set of
movements that were considered proper to ballet and stopped wearing corsets and
pointe shoes in the search for greater freedom movement.

Throughout the 20th century, sociopolitical concerns, major historical events

and the development of other art forms contributed to the continued development of
modernist dance in the United States and Germany. Moving into the 1960s, new
ideas about dance began to emerge, as a response to earlier dance forms and to
social changes. Eventually, postmodern dance artists would reject the formalism of
modern dance, and include elements such as performance art, contact
improvisation, release technique and improvisation.

Another characteristics of modern dance in opposition to ballet is the

deliberate use of gravity. Whereas classical ballet dancers strive to be light and airy
on their feet, modern dancers often to use their body weight to enhance movement.
Modern dance movements work with the deliberate use of gravity instead of
attempting to constantly defy it, as ballerinas do. Modern dance make use of the
floor, where dancers roll, stretch, lay down or move across the floor. A modern
dancer rejects the classical ballet stance of an upright, erect body, often opting
instead for deliberate falls to the floor.

Contemporary dance is a genre of dance performance that developed during

the mid-twentieth century and has since grown to become one of the dominant
genres for formally trained dancers throughout the world, with particularly strong
popularity in the U.S and Europe. Although originally informed by borrowing from
classical, modern and jazz styles, it has come to incorporate elements from many
styles of dance. Due to its technical similarities, it is often perceived to be closely
related to modern dance, ballet, and other classical concert dance styles.

In terms of the focus of its technique, contemporary dance tends to combine

the strong but controlled legwork of ballet with modern that stresses on torso. It also
employs contact-release, floor work, fall and recovery, and improvisation
characteristics of modern dance. Unpredictable changes in rhythm, speed, and
direction are often used, as well. Additionally, contemporary dance sometimes
incorporates elements of non-western dance cultures, such as elements from African
dance including bent knees, or movements from the Japanese contemporary dance.

11
Let’s assess ourselves, we should have a healthy lifestyle by doing physical
activities through dancing. There are benefits in dancing, shaping the body, more
friends, and live longer.

Health Related fitness

There are five areas of health related fitness. They are heart and lung
endurance or cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance,
flexibility, and body composition.
Regular exercises and physical activity promotes strong muscles and
bones. It improves respiratory, cardiovascular health, and overall health. Staying
active can also help you maintain a healthy weight, reduce your risk for type 2
diabetes, heart disease, and reduce your risk for some cancers

a. Cardiorespiratory endurance – maintaining a healthy body weight

and reducing risk of disease
b. Muscular strength – helps prevent injury increases energy level
c. Muscular endurance – improved muscle tone and increased
metabolism
d. Flexibility – better posture and stress relief
e. Body composition – improves self-confidence and improves sleep
quality
