WHAT ARE COMMUNICABLE
DISEASES?
Communicable diseases are illnesses that spread from one person to
another or from an animal to a person, or from a surface or a food.
Diseases can be transmitted during air travel through: direct contact
with a sick person. respiratory droplet spread from a sick person
sneezing or coughing.

EXAMPLES OF COMMUNICABLE
DISEASES?
Dracunculiasis, also known as Guinea worm disease(GWD), is an infection caused by
the parasite Dracunculus medinensis. The death rate for GWD is low, disability is a
common outcome.

Onchocerciasis, commonly known as “river blindness”, is caused by the parasitic


worm Onchocerca volvulus. WHO recommends treating“ river blindness“ with
ivermectin at least once a yearly for 10 to 15 years.

COMMON WAYS TO PREVENT


COMMUNICABLE DISEASES:
Immunise against infectious diseases.
Wash and dry your hands regularly and well.
Stay at home if you are sick.
Cover coughs and sneezes.
Clean surfaces regularly.
Ventilate your home.
Prepare food safely.
