What is the difference between diverticulosis and diverticulitis? Liver Cancer
Diverticulosis: Diverticulosis is simply the presence of these small bulges or sacs (diverticula) in your colon. They
usually don’t induce any signs or need to be treated. Yet, diverticulosis can lead to diverticulitis. Gall Bladder Cancer

Diverticulitis: Diverticulitis is inflammation and infection in one or more diverticula. You may sense pain, nausea, fever,
and other signs. This is a much more serious and potentially dangerous situation.

What causes diverticulosis and diverticulitis?
It is not very clear what causes diverticula, but the medical science theory is that not eating sufficient fiber is the most
important reason for diverticular formation. Not eating adequate fiber yields a buildup of waste (constipation) in your
colon. Constipation puts extra pressure on the walls of the colon. This raised pressure causes the small pouches of the
diverticula to develop in weak areas in your colon.
Diverticulitis happens when one or more of these diverticula become inflamed or infected. The inflammation and
infection can be caused by fecal matter or bacteria becoming trapped in the diverticula.
Physical examination: During a physical exam, Dr. Samrat Jankar may check your abdomen for tenderness or
swelling, and may also perform a rectal exam to check for any symptoms of bleeding or infection.
Medical history: Dr. Samrat Jankar will ask you about your medical history including your present signs, the types of
foods you normally eat how usually you have bowel movements and other queries about your bowel movements
foods you normally eat, how usually you have bowel movements, and other queries about your bowel movements,
and will check any medicines you are now taking.
Blood test: Your blood is checked for symptoms of infection, such as high WBC counts
Stool sample: Your stool sample is studied for the presence of abnormal bacteria or parasites to rule out the
infective reason
CT scan: A CT Scan abdomen and pelvis can show infected or inflamed diverticula and even show the severity of
diverticulitis.
Colonoscopy: In this exam, the full length of the colon can be examined A light, flexible tube with a camera, called a
colonoscope, is inserted via your rectum and into your colon. During a colonoscopy, your colon is checked for
abnormal changes, ulcers, bleeding, or other issues that could cause differences in bowel habits or abdominal pain.
It is very important in long-standing issues to rule out cancer.
Sigmoidoscopy: In this exam, a narrow, flexible tube with a light on the end is inserted into the rectum & moved into
the sigmoid colon. This tube is connected to a video camera. The camera allows visual inspection of your sigmoid
colon and rectum.
If your diverticulitis is mild, treatment may involve rest, dietary changes, and antibiotics, while more severe cases
may require hospitalization and surgery.
If your diverticulitis is severe, you have rectal bleeding or are having a repeat episode of diverticulitis, you may be
admitted to the hospital to acquire intravenous (IV) antibiotics, and IV fluids or possibly be assessed for surgery by Dr.
Samrat Jankar if associated with difficulties.
Bowel resection: This surgery concerns removing the affected part of the colon and reconnecting the healthy parts
of the colon. This method is typically performed using minimally invasive techniques such as robotic or laparoscopy
surgery.
Colostomy: In some cases, a temporary or permanent colostomy may be essential if the affected region of the colon
cannot be removed. A colostomy involves creating an opening in the abdominal wall through which feces can pass
into a pouch that is attached to the outside of the body.
Yes, the diverticular disease can be serious, specifically if it progresses to diverticulitis or other difficulties. However, with
proper diagnosis, treatment, and management, most individuals with the diverticular disease can lead normal, healthy lives.
