（Challenge）。

馬萊特出生在美國印第安納州，父親是衛理公會的傳道人。 他大學畢業後，繼入哈佛、牛津、柏林大學深造。 曾辦報一

年，離職後參加美國陸軍，第一次世界大戰時，任砲兵隊少尉。1925-1945 年間在波士頓大學神學院教授哲學、文學、

和宗教教育，嗣後升為教務長。 1945-1957，任德州達拉斯神學院宗教哲學教授。

馬萊特是詩人，也是散文作家，參加許多學術團體，是波士頓作家協會的榮譽會長。

這首詩是 1926 年為波士頓大學的宗教教育研究所的奉獻禮而作。嗣後波士頓大學的神學院將它用作校歌。據作者自述，

這首歌在他心中醞釀已久，在他求學時（1919-1922），一位教授描繪耶穌經常受挑戰，當雅各和約翰的母親為他們

求在神的國度位居左右時，耶穌對他們說：「我所喝的杯，你們能喝麼？我所受的洗，你們能受麼？」（可 10:38），

給他留下了難忘的印象。 兩年後，他看受難劇時，那個十架上的強盜轉臉對耶穌說：「你的國降的時候，求你記念我。」

耶穌自他眼中看到信心和悔改之情后回答說： 「今日你要同我在樂園裡了。」這些話使他頓悟永生是如此實在，無事可

1924 年春，梅海利為一友人譜此曲，參加一項詩歌比賽，不幸落選。 當時馬萊特和梅海利住同一宿舍，聽到他在音

樂室譜曲，很欣賞那旋律，因此當他寫這首詩時，決定用這個曲調。 梅海利大學畢業後，赴波士頓神學院深造。 他是聖

公會會友，在紐約奧本神學院任教職員廿五年。 在各聖公會教會任司琴五十四年。
